The Locus has some extraordinary, unique food selections, and their taste is fantastic. The ambiance is good, with a very cottagey feel and a wooden interior. However, one minor annoyance is the uneven lighting. Some seating areas do not have enough light, depending on the weather and other factors. Great happy hour from 3 to 6 PM. Drinks were seven dollars so super affordable and a great pour. It's quite spacious and wasn't too crowded so we were able to stay for a few hours and have a great conversation. Service was attentive and checked in to see if we needed anything. We ended up getting the Dine Out menu and really enjoyed the appetizer salad that had blue cheese, arugula, and pear. I got the arctic char, shrimp Main course that had roasted potatoes, roasted bell, peppers, asparagus, and a little bread pudding thing that was quite unique. I thought it was a pretty solid meal and I was very stuffed at the end of the main. The variation of this course kept things exciting with each bite. The crème brûlée option caught my eye from the dine out menu (the other option was a cheesecake). It was definitely an incredibly unique crème brûlée with blueberry and lavender and something very unique and special. Having previously lived on Main St I was familiar with Locus but I'm always looking for weekend brunch spots (sorry Anthony Bourdain). I looked up what their weekend brunch special was and it said "Philly cheesesteak eggs Benny" and I honestly thought that might be the sort of thing I might order if I was on death row. So I got my ass down there and, let me tell you, it was amazing. Not only was it an amazing flavour amalgamation, the potatoes that came with it were perfection. The menu has varied over the years, but seasonal specials have included bison, halibut, spot prawns and venison dishes. Staff are friendly, lighting is dim and seating is casual. What I thought coming to this place was that I've never noticed it before ! The signage outside is not very eye catching , a little worn and torn. The space inside was a bit on the dark side but cozy seating. They have daily specials for brunch. I went for 'brunch' at 1pm on a Sunday and it was not too busy and we were seated right away. We had called in advance to make reservations but they had said it was not needed. The menu is not too extensive but I tried the skillet with wild boar since that seemed unique. The dish was the definition of comfort. Cheesy, a good amount of meat , nicely roasted veg , perfectly cooked hash. My only complaint was it was on the smaller side - but maybe when I think of 'skillet' I think of the regular sized skillets I have at home haha. They had an a couple hot sauces - the Mexican style , green or red types. Someone who I assumed was either the manager that day or owner walked around and asked all the tables how everything was. Came here for a recent happy hour with a friend and had a good time. Happy hour is available daily 3-6 and 10pm to close and includes both food and drink options. We came Wednesday afternoon around 3 and they were just transitioning from brunch to dinner. The whole place was pretty empty, so we opted to sit near the windows as it's a bit dimmer further in the restaurant/pub. I tried both cocktails on the hh menu: the Lemoncello Cosmopolitan ($7) and the New York Sour ($7). Of the two, the sour was my personal favorite. It tasted exactly like lemonade; I couldn't taste the whiskey at all! The cosmopolitan was also good but a little too sweet for me personally. My friend had two different beers from the HH menu and enjoyed both. We also shared the karaage chicken wings and my friend also had the nachos, both for $11 during happy hour. The chicken wings were good and we both liked the soy sauce-based glaze, but it was a bit deceiving to call it karaage as it's a completely different taste than karaage. My friend unfortunately didn't like the nachos that much. We were one of the youngest patrons there; I definitely noticed the average age here skews older. read more

We came to Locus for brunch on a Sunday afternoon and there was plenty of seating available. I ordered the Locus skillet (steak) with a side of pulled wild boar. The food took quite a while to arrive despite there not being that many patrons. When it came, I felt like the food wasn't that fresh and the "best" part of the dish was the potatoes. The steak I felt was over cooked and a bit on the chewy side and there was not that much meat or veggies. The focaccia felt quite stale and was not toasty. I also felt that the dish was on the small side and not worth the price I paid. I felt like the dish would be something I could make better at home myself. 2 stars for the (vegan) food + 1 star for the top-notch service that tried to make things right. I saw that they had "vegan options" advertised on their menu, so we decided to try them out for Saturday brunch. The first thing to note is that, coffee-wise, they don't have drip coffee, so they don't offer the usual bottomless coffee that most breakfast/brunch restaurants offer. Instead, you can order a $3.95 Americano and pay $1.75 for a refill - not ideal. As for the vegan options, they have a Huevos Rancheros and Garden Harvest Bowl ($18) that can both be made vegan. We got the latter, which is made vegan by substituting the egg for tofu scramble. The bowl usually comes with grilled focaccia, but apparently there is dairy in that, so they just omitted the bread. Our bowls came within 10-15 minutes or so - they were rather small portions, coming with a variety of veggies, potatoes, nice veggie sausage, and tofu scramble. The dish was barely seasoned, so it was a pretty bland dish; thankfully, there were a couple of decent hot sauces on the table to amp things up. The manager (?) noticed the smallness of our meals and offered to bring us additional food to make up for focaccia; he came back with some more potatoes and a small fruit bowl (mostly grape and blueberry), which we appreciated very much. That's some top-notch customer service. All in all, my constructive feedback is: -Offer a bottomless drip coffee to be competitive with other breakfast/brunch restaurants. -Revamp the bowl so that the vegan option is more interesting flavour-wise and has a suitable replacement for the focaccia. If the above two things are done, we'd gladly come back, as the place itself is very comfortable and the service is excellent. read more

We each decided to get a cocktail. Grayson went with the pineapple ginger mojito and I went with the french kiss. Both drinks were super super strong. Now I don't mind getting more alcohol in my drinks for what they're worth but they were so strong that it felt like we were drinking straight shots instead of light refreshing fruity cocktails. Since my drink had elderflower liqueur, pineapple juice and cranberry it was a bit lighter and sweeter than Grayson's who's had dark rum and grand marnier that took over the drink entirely. We ended up making our own concoction by mixing our drinks together. To be fair, I overheard that their bartender recently quit so this probably led to the heavy drink situation...so I recommend sticking to wines and beers until they are able to find a new one. At this point we received a basket of potato bread with spicy butter. The potato bread was fluffy and soft. Neither of us were too sure about the spicy butter but it added a nice touch of spice to the bread to add flavor. It was a nice change to your typical whipped or garlic butter. We went with the jumbo black tiger prawns as a starter. It came with 4 glistening tiger prawns, spinach, chardonnay-fish nage, and grilled crostini. The jumbo black tiger prawns were cooked to perfection and you could taste how fresh they were. They were transluscent and had a bite to them. Needless to say, they were amazing. We soaked the crostini in the broth on the bottom to pack them full of flavor before enjoying each bite of crunchy goodness. Yum. read more

The service was pretty good - the food came out fast, our server was nice and attentive, just that the food was nothing to write home about. I found my miso poutine lacking in the gravy department, and what little gravy there was, it was incredibly salty. We weren't fans of the scallop and bacon - it was weird that it was so sweet. This is my favourite brunch spot. I've only been there twice but both times it was -* chef's kiss*- delicious and worth the price. Some brunch spots you pay for ambiance. Other spots, you pay for quantity. At locus, the price is worth the excellent quality. We started with the bread basket that comes with two spiced butters. One sweet, one savoury. Both good. The sweet one was like cinnamon sugar and the other one tastes like something that one would use to season meat. I wish I knew what it was so that I could replicate it at home. :). The first time I ordered this, the bread was soft but cold. When we went this time, I asked for it toasted and it was much more enjoyable. For the mains, we had a wild mushroom benny (subbed the cashew cheese for brie), a seafood benny, and a duck confit benny. Each bite and morsel was delectable. My favourite was the mushroom benny with brie as it was just "mmmmmmmmmmm" and savoury. My sister loved the duck confit as the meat was tender and flavourful. Before we left, we also ordered a bread pudding à la mode and it is hands down, the best bread pudding we've ever had. Perfect amount of sweetness, crisp outsides, and cocoa nibs or some chocolate on the inside. Each bite had such delicious, chocolatey goodness. I highly recommend. Despite all that we ate and all the sweet and savoury flavours, the best part is that when we left, we were full but did not feel gross. The portion sizes were decent, and as I said...what you pay for is quality. I don't know how busy it gets because I've only ever been in on quiet Wednesday mornings but the staff is quite attentive and very accommodating. They have lots of gluten-free and vegan options as well. And the cocoa they use is fair trade. Try it out! I've walked by The Locus more times than I can count but never thought to drop by for food. They're located close to Hawkers Delight and Nam Nam Noodles. We dropped in on a Sunday (with 7:15pm reservations) but there were less than a handful of tables occupied. Service is great, especially the bartender who is incredibly friendly and upbeat. The menu consists of appetizers, salads, burgers, pastas and mains. They offer a few weekly specials; fish and chips (Tuesday), butcher's choice (Thursday) and a three course pre-fixe Sunday dinner ($25.00). - Double tequila cinnamon sour ($10.00) - this was their special of the evening. Nothing too memorable. - Scallops & prawns ($18.00) - Hokkaido scallops, jumbo black tiger prawns and bacon with a maple brown butter sauce. You get two scallops and two prawns. Tasty but a very, very small portion. - Sunday three course family dinner ($25.00) - beet salad, Central Park Farms pork chop and cheesecake. Beet salad was pleasant with goat cheese, beets, roasted hazelnuts and orange. Pork chop was excellent; moist and tender. Everything else on the plate was executed well, especially the fluffy mashed potatoes. The cheesecake was heartier, more robust than we anticipated (reminded me of some GF desserts I've had) but was quite enjoyable. - Halda gwali BC halibut ($32.00) - halibut was a touch overcooked. The carrots were interesting; hard to bite, almost raw. Not sure if that was deliberate. I really wanted some classic pancakes and asked if they had any (the menu only had banana pancakes) and unfortunately they said that they couldn't do original ones as the batter was pre-made. Instead, I got the french toast for my sweet tooth! The service seemed to be very hit or miss. I found that our waitress was cold and standoffish, but there was another waiter (who may have been the restaurant owner or manager?) who came by to talk to us and was super friendly! He asked if we had gotten our bread (we hadn't, so he brought over a basket right away) and even came to check up on us once we had a couple of bites of our food to see if there was anything we needed - he was a delight! The food itself was a-okay! The bread at the beginning was delicious, but the french toast was very average. It was different than any french toast I had before, as it was not very sponge-y, but instead almost seemed to be deep fried? But the pieces were small so it wasn't a huge portion that would make me regret eating so much. The ambiance wasn't my favourite. Being on Main, it was hard to find parking and I found myself circling around a couple of times before I snagged a spot. The restaurant itself had a bit of a strange layout - our tables were on a platform to the left of the entrance, and there were a lot of chairs everywhere which made it a bit difficult to navigate around. Solid brunch spot in a hip area. We had no issues getting seated on Saturday before noon, and the place was completely packed. The staff were friendly and courteous, and their service was fast! Not too expensive, and the quality is pretty decent. Their brunch specialty seems to be a braised wild boar on top of their breakfast foods. I got the wild boar eggs benny, and my girlfriend got the portobello mushroom and chèvre eggs benny. The wild boar was solid. It has a nice richness with the gravy that isn't too overpowering. They don't add too much hollandaise sauce, which is great because a lot of breakfast places make the mistake of drowning it in hollandaise. The English muffin is nicely toasted; crispy and fluffy. Not mindblowingly good, but a very solid eggs benny overall. The portobello mushroom and chèvre was nice surprise! The goat cheese had a hint of pesto and the slight tartness helped offset the richness of the dish. Bold move on replacing the English muffin with the mushroom, but I think it works really well! It doesn't make you feel guilty for finishing the dish. I'd recommend it regardless of whether you're vegetarian or not. I was able to make a reservation the night before for Sunday brunch. Most tables were covered but not jam packed . We got a nice seat by the fireplace. The ambiance is a bit darker than I would prefer for a brunch place. The interior has "tree branches" weaving in and out of the walls and ceiling making the place feel like a dark forest. The menu has a lot of typical brunch options and a good variety as well. I went with the classic country ham & tomato eggs benny and my dining partner had the same but substituted mushrooms for ham. The bread basket is a nice touch with two kinds of spreads. The latte we order was nice and hot. Service was prompt and friendly. When the foods came, I was happy to see some mixed fruits served with the potatoes. The potatoes were cut up like thick French fries and it was soft which I loved. The country ham was more like ham steak and I am happy to report that their knives are strong enough to cut through the layers without me asking for a steak knife! Inside, are what looks to be artificial tree trunks cascading from the ceiling throughout the restaurant. In the middle is a nice stone fireplace that adds a nice home-like feeling. Food - As a "last meal in Vancouver" I got the seafood Florentine Eggs Benedict and may I say... YUMMM!! The seafood tasted fresh, there was a good amount of hollandaise sauce and my side of fruit was refreshing! I also tried their coffee and it was really good, creamy and loaded with lots of caffeine. Perfect for a long drive back to Seattle. Service - Our server was amazing! She made good recommendations and answered all of our questions about the menu. She would also refill our water and coffee without us asking which, in my opinion, is a huge plus! I decided to try it in rainy day and believed the reviews were overrated, it definitely ruined my day! We were so disappointed for the service and food. When we walked in almost 12.10pm, there was no host/signs for waiting to be seated. The people kept coming in with wet jacket or umbrella, we all waited at short/small hallway (waiting area). Gee... Not even a waiter/anybody come out to take down the name!! After few mins waited, a guy who come out and ask who come first. All the people were there were telling him who came first, then some people telling him for how many people. Well, we keep waiting for another 20 mins then got seated in 2 people table for 3 persons. I purposely time how long we gonna waste on this stupid restaurant. We waited for our server to give us water, menu for another 5-10 mins. We ordered at 12.42pm, the waitress told me some items were out of order (Huevos Rancheros etc...). We waited for 10 mins our coffee came but no food served after 30 mins. NOT kidding!! The waitress came over and apologized for long wait (we made fresh coffee and kitchen slow, blah, blah, blah) but still..... Our food came eventually.... Traditional benny - Smoked ham was dry and chewy, hollandaise was bland. Steak & Eggs - Grilled beef tenderloin with two eggs with roasted potatoes. It's good. Southwest Omelette - Chorizo, sweet peppers, onion and jalapeno jack with buffalo chipotle sauce. Taste ok. We asked them to refill the coffee before the food came, however, we didn't get another cup of coffee until we finished the dish. I got the bill and know we're in a wrong place, they charged $3.25 for a cup coffee and $1.25 for refill. Great!! Such a neighbor area, we paid so much to get crappy service and food. My friend and I were in town visiting and needed a quick bite prior to checking out the Bloedel Conservatory and Van Dussen Botanical Gardens. We stopped in at Locus due to the great reviews and close proximity to both attractions. We were not disappointed at all! The meal started with a basket of bread and butter. There were 3 varieties of bread; cinnamon, wheat, and apricot/raisin. It also came with two different types of butter; cinnamon sugar and roasted red pepper. All of which were delicious! For breakfast I ordered the wild boar benedict which was beyond tasty! Eggs were cooked perfectly, hollandaise wasn't too rich, and the boar was nice and moist, not dried out at all. I also loved that the benedict came with both fruit and potatoes on the side, usually it's only one or the other. Speaking of potatoes, I was so pleased it was more of a root vegetable hash rather than just straight potatoes. The herbs on them were perfect, they didn't need ketchup or anything. Service was the icing on top of the cake. Very attentive the entire time! Our waitress was a young blonde lady but there was also a gentleman who came over to check on us quite a few times as well. Perhaps he's the owner or manager? Either way we really appreciated it, our water glasses were never even close to empty. I love The Locus so much that I came here twice in a span of 3 days. During my first visit, I only stayed for drinks. But after looking at their food menu I knew I needed to come back soon. I just so happened to be in the area over the weekend and saw that they were serving brunch, which led to my second visit. Both visits were so lovely. During my drinks visit, there were so many that caught my eye: the gin and ginger fizz, the pisco sour, and the flirtini all looked delicious and ultimately I decided on the gin and ginger fizz. This was the perfect cocktail to end my night. On my second trip, I got the seafood florentine benny. I was a huge fan! I'm on a salmon kick right now and am trying to eat as much salmon as I can, so this benny hit the spot perfectly. I also loved that the dish came with both hashbrowns and a fruit bowl. I usually order this as my side at other brunch spots, so it was great that this was already included. The service was also fantastic. Our server had great drink recommendations and the manager came around to chat with us and crack some jokes. 5-stars all around! I will definitely be adding The Locus to my weekend brunch rotation. Atmosphere/ambiance: I reserved a table for six people on Sunday. Surprisingly the restaurant was not too busy, so it wasn't too noisy or packed with people. It was quite comfortable sitting with friends, chatting, and eating together. Service: Our waitress was good that she would ask what we would like to drink right after we sat down, but it took a long time to bring the drinks to our table. One of the waiters (or manager) there was quite friendly, smiling a lot and chatting with us. However, he informed us that one of the chefs called in sick and there was only one chef cooking that night, so he asked if we were fine with the slow service. That meant we would have to wait longer for the food. We had already settled down at this restaurant, so of course we would have to say yes that we would be fine waiting. It really took long enough for the food. Appetizers came out first and we got some bread before dinner, but it was really a long wait. Food: The presentation of each dish looked great. I would have thought and expected that the quality should be good although the portion was small. However, the quality was barely okay. I am sure many western restaurants out there can cook better than what I got here. I was kind of disappointed paying a high price but not getting a good quality of food. Note: their menu doesn't have a lot of varieties although you can see pasta, seafood, duck, pork, chicken, beef and etc. The menu seems to be normal, but the restaurant needs to adjust their menu or be more creative on their dishes if it wants to stay competitive in the market in Greater Vancouver. Their wine list is not great. I would recommend to have brunch at this restaurant. Their brunch tasted better than dinner. read more

Thank you Locus for being in this community for so long serving up great, innovative inspiring dishes where not only the decor can wow, but so can the food. I love the eclectic approach into your presentations. The staffing is always so lovely and the better surprise when having a nice meal on an early summers eve. We went mostly Vegetarian here. I had ordered up their smashingly delicious Crispy Brussels Sprouts $12 - Toasted sunflower seeds, balsamic reduction, & 2 year aged Parmesan. Rustic, flavourful and delicious. Scallop & Spinach Salad $18.- Sea scallops, spinach, wild mushrooms, charred balsamic onions, French radish, roasted hazelnut crunch, & burnt honey tarragon dressing and the Daily Special which was pan fried Spaetzle with mushrooms, including Morels, one of my favourite wild mushrooms and makes for an amazing omelette (I used to have that for weekend breakfasts when I lived in Toronto). Great service as usual. I recommend coming here for dinner since this place is more known for it's breakfast. Don't forget dinner time. So if you're tired of dining at an Earls and White Spot and big box restaurants. Go off the beaten path so to speak and try something different. There are lots of good quality places to eat. You just need to open your eyes, your mind and palette to find your way to hidden gems that are right before you. I love community food. I love supporting places like this and this style of food. Especially when the service was like that night, those little touches make the difference. Right down to the spot of tea. Remember folks (see? It's genderless) Typo's can be damaging to your health. Fantastic food and great service! After an initial mix-up with our reservation, we were quickly seated in a large booth at the back. Mother's Day brunch was in full swing and it was packed. This didn't affect the fast, friendly service one bit. Our trio of hangry guests tried the sirloin steak skillet, a Chuck burger, and a ham & tomatoes Benny. All were served hot and well presented. The Benny came with a nice selection of fresh fruit on the side as a bonus. My skillet was fantastic...loved the tasty seasonings. I could have used a few more slices of sirloin, but that's just my inner carnivore talking. It was very filling and hearty. I enjoyed the Sunday Double CAESAR special, maybe more than 1? :) ...but it was a bit on the spicy side. Great for me, but you might want to adjust your "spicepectations" with your server. Will definitely return soon for a dinner and drinks sesh! read more

How did it take me so long to try the Locus!? Now I have tried it, this might be one of my favoueite brunch spots on Main Street. Everything we ate here was delicious. I was so full that although we came for brunch, I didn't need to eat anything else until late in the evening! We ordered: - Sea food Florentine (is was basically eggs benny with crab, prawns and salmon) It was also served with fruit and loads of perfect hash. - The beef skillet - This was crammed full of tasty veggies, meat and was served with a salad. one of my favorites just for the warm candlelit backdrop in itself. The ling cod with hokkaido scallops I ordered arrived nicely presented and tasted devine. However, there were only 2 tiny scallops on the plate which made it look more like an appetizer size. I found that rather disappointing. The lamb done two ways was fall off the bone but lacked in flavor and depth. Overall, I would still return for a nice glass of wine. read more

Went for happy hour at this restaurant on a lazy Thursday afternoon and loved it! This is my second visit to this restaurant. The first time I went for dinner. This time I went for happy hour and all the appetizers for 25% off. They also offer house wine red and white at $6 per glass. I was impressed with all of the appetizers we chose!!! My gf picked this place for a weekday brunch. It wasn't busy, but it looked like they're busier in the evening as the vibe inside is more for dinner/drinks than morning brunch. The brunch options were great -- eggs benny, skillet, French toast, etc. But it wasn't memorable. I've definitely had better tasting brunch food. They had many dairy-free milk alternatives, so it's good for lactose intolerants or those allergic to dairy. read more

Went here on a Saturday morning right when they opened in recommendation by a friend. I've passed by this place so many times it's been here for years. They must be doing something right. The staff was welcoming and the owner (maybe the manager dude w the cap) came by our table was friendly and humorous. The thing you notice inside the place is the interior. We were seated at a booth table and above over hanging was what might be the Locus you have to come in to see what I'm talkin bout. It's cool and it's different. The place smelled delicious. What interested me was the Wild Boar eggs benny. Never tried boar so I tried it. The texture of it is like pulled pork. It's delicious. The others had Huevos Rancheros and the Main St Eggs. Those were good too. I'd go here again definitely I like the atmosphere inside. read more
