The lobby of the hotel is nice and they have a really good section for the breakfast each morning. The food selection for breakfast is what any typical hotel would have which works for most people. Let's get into the room. Is it the most modern, fanciest room I have ever seen? No. But, is it clean, quiet, and overall a good room? Yes! The room still has that older feel to it which is okay because there was plenty of room for the two of us staying there. The bed was comfortable, although the pillows were a little too squishy for my liking. Pillows are always hit or miss when you travel though. There was a mini fridge for our food, and even a microwave. The bathroom was pretty standard. The only downfall from the bathroom was that the shower water pressure was a little iffy. It seemed to hit right next to the handle bar in the shower which made it a little tight in there trying to not hit the bar. But otherwise, the bathroom itself was pretty good. This hotel compared to some of the other ones in the area stood out above the rest in quality and if we ever go back to Brattleboro, we will definitely stay here again. (They might even be adding EV car charging so that would be a huge plus!)

The one this time is highly unpleasant initial contact that precludes staying there. The promise of a few relaxing days reduced the sting of resigning myself to paying $300/night for the "privilege" of a private bath; although all accommodations go for more than $200/night, only two of the six options have private baths. (The slightly less expensive option than mine was booked for my desired dates). Two are small one-room spaces that they advertise as cottages but seem more to be sheds. Neither have any plumbing and require using common facilities for guests in the main house. Reaching an innkeeper was rough to begin with. He then kept misstating my desired dates and told me that they could later adjust it. I let that go and hoped for the best. The breaking point was discussing my arrival time. I understood and respected that check in time was 3:00 pm. I truly did not think that ask to arrivie at 10 am on a Saturday morning in mid-September and happily either leaving my luggage in the car or leaving it behind the desk at the B n B until my room was ready and quietly enjoying the property was unreasonable. I was not counting on my room even being empty then but figured that it likely would be. The innkeeper got upset and told me that they still would have been serving breakfast (to no more then 12 guests, some of whom likeky already would have started their day) and could not even think about "assimilating" a guest at that time, He fully knew that I was not expecting any attention beyond a "hey" and maybe a handshake at that time. I told him to forget it and hung up; despite having my telephone number and e-mail, he made no effort at damage control even to the point of a quick apology that they did not want me there that early. My subsequent call to at least leave things on a friendlier note went unanswered. Subsequent conversations with a couple of travel agents, two friends who regularly travel, and a friend who is an award-winning travel agent confirmed my sense that my request was very reasonable, This is aside from the owners arguably charging at least 2x what they should. As an aside, I NEVER have had a hotel or inn keeper deny a request to show up early and amuse myself until my room was ready.

When I heard about Frog Meadow, what appealed to me was the fact that it is a rustic, mountain / wooded retreat. And that's what I wanted .... rustic relaxation. They offer some rooms w/ private baths - and some rooms that have a shared bath ( perfect if you are traveling with friends). I chose what they call The Brook Cottage. Set away from the main house, next to a babbling brook, this magical little cabin features a queen bed, electricity with ceiling fan and air conditioning ( I didn't need it at the end of June - the property sits on top of a mountain and the entire cottage has screened windows that provide an amazing cross breeze). Relaxing in this cottage surrounded by nature, is just transforming. I have not slept this good in months. Imagine the most comfy bed .... with great linen and blankets .... in an enchanted forest. I'm not kidding - it felt like that. True, it does not have a bathroom. But I knew this and realized that I would be "Glamping" and that's what this is!! The bathroom is located in the main house (which they show you during the tour when you arrive). It is spotlessly clean, and they offer big robes and lots of towels. This is a MENS retreat, so they jokingly suggest that in the night when you have to - just water the trees lol - otherwise the bathroom is there to use at all times. It worked out fine. They have a wood fired hot tub ... a swimming pond ..... patio to relax on and enjoy the evening. Also available is a beautiful great room / living room with cable tv if you want. Then there is breakfast. Served in a large chefs kitchen / dining room combo and butlers pantry. Fresh fruits and granola and yogurts, fresh juice tea and coffee to start. They prepare a different hot breakfast every day featuring local ingredients. The food was awesome. The hosts are a couple that built this property from scratch, and they love what they do. Attentive ( but not bothersome). This is their home and they enjoy sharing it, and are so accommodating. ** I mentioned that I had spotty internet in the cottage ... and they moved the routers right away to improve the signal etc ( it worked great after that). They could have easily shrugged and said it's the woods - sorry.... but they cared. Frog Meadow is amazing and I can't recommend it enough if you are looking for a quality, gay b&b. If you are looking for a fussy froo froo boring hotel then go there. If you want rustic and comfortable glamping in a true VT paradise - then go to Frog Meadow!!

Not being big breakfast eaters, we figured we'd grab a muffin. There was a small table that had a pot of coffee and 2 wrapped muffins on a plate. There was no other option for drinks such as tea, water or juice. There was a hostess there who seated people in the restaurant and after asking she brought us 2 bottles of water. When we took our muffins, she added 2 more to the plate. We had dinner in Champney's the night we arrived and it was very good. It was busy for a Tuesday night and the bartender never got my drink made until we were finished with dinner but they did take it off the bill. While they do clearly state that they add $15/day for tips that they split between housekeeping, the front desk staff and the breakfast staff - which I found strange as who is normally tipping the person who checks you in or the one who refills a coffee pot, I was more perturbed by the fact that on top of this they still had an envelope in the room for tips for housekeeping. I've never seen this done before where they are basically asking you to tip twice. The inn is in a lovely location and as far as historic Deerfield they are the only restaurant though Greenfield and other small towns are close by.

The balls are located in the trailer/snack shack near the range, but each time we go, we head inside to the office. I don't believe they staff the trailer. Next to the lodge is a small driving range. The tee areas are a bit old, so you'll have to drive from the grass. Not really a big deal. They provide an ample amount of wooden tees. They have clubs you can use, but most are rather old. We always bring our own clubs. The range is marked off by yards and the grass is cut regularly. There's a very nice view of the hills surrounding the course. It's most likely an even better view come fall. Behind the range, they have a small putt-putt course that looks to be entertaining for little kids. This is fairly no frills driving range. But where else in Southern VT can you get a rather large bucket of balls for $5? Or anywhere else for that matter?

Over the years I've traveled to 38 states in the US, and a dozen countries on both sides of the planet. I've slept in everything from retreat centers to five star hotels. The Lake Inn isn't a five star hotel, but it gets five stars from me for clean, comfortable accomodations with views that can't be topped and friendly proprietors.

The exterior of the place is a dump and the huge paved parking area is in need of maintenance. Yes, we read the reviews but most were very old and we thought it was worth a try for the price. The price is too high for what you get with, as some of the other reviews indicated some "resident" appearing folks. Yes, they need housing but not at a "Choice" branded place. We checked the room out before committing, and though "old" seemed to be fine: looked clean, tub and grouting okay, toilet and sink clean with okay flooring. But after only 10 minutes inside, my granddaughter's eyes began to water, got puffy and swollen, and then my wife started feeling like something was wrong. Probably dust, or pollen, or mildew in the bedding, or whatever, but that was it. We left. It could have been fine, but we're just not accustomed to that level of poor presentation at that price.
