The first show on Halloween night in 1982 drew a crowd of 450 people to the little town of Pleasant Hill, MO. The physical shape and condition of the theatre is similar to what most of us old people might remember from when we went to the movies when we were kids. I doubt the theatre has been refurbished (except for possibly changing the cushions on the seats) and it hasn't changed much over the past several decades. The silver movie screen still hangs behind the back curtain. The charming history of the building has been preserved, but it's also clean and comfortable and conducive to a fun and entertaining evening. The owner of the theatre is hands-on involved in every production - booking the talent, playing the Sax, acting as emcee, and occasionally signing. The show consists of a band with a few consistent performers and a few rotating performers, plus a few guest singers. For instance, the keyboard player Phil Hilton has been on stage since the first production 38 years ago - and by the way, he's outrageously talented. Other band performers, such as the lead guitar player rotate but they always have top notch talent at each instrument for every performance. The show always features a few guest singers for each performance, with regular appearances by Duke Mason who is both gifted and funny and always makes his appearances memorable. The performances are held every Saturday evening year round beginning at 7:30 pm (they usually start 5-10 minutes late) until approximately 10 pm, and they range from classic old-time country to top 40 hits from the 50's-70's. No matter which genre they perform, the result is always very well done. You'll also discover that a number of patriotic and gospel songs are frequently sprinkled in, and these songs are often our favorites from each show. Seats for each show are reserved and you can call ahead or purchase your tickets the day of the show at the box office that opens at 6:00 pm on Saturday nights. Tickets are only $12, but be careful if Duke Mason is scheduled to perform, there will likely be very few tickets available for walk-ins. The location in Pleasant Hill might be a bit of a drive for some people in the KC area, but it's a fun and inexpensive way to spend a Saturday evening and I highly recommend it.

Recently, I went to the Knuckleheads Garage to see the Texas Headhunters, which is a newer band featuring my favorite guitar player and singer Ian Moore. The experience was pretty great from start to finish. I was able to buy a ticket online and save it to my Apple wallet. It was super easy to get in. Parking was on-site and plentiful. They had a great opening act that was a local band from Kansas City. I liked that the drinks were affordable and super cold. I got a tall Quirk for $8. Beers were similarly priced. Later in the evening, I got hungry and scored a hotdog for six dollars. The whole place is cash only. Be advised you will not tap to pay. They have an ATM on site if you need cash. The concert was fantastic! The band was amazing and I was very pleased with the experience. There's a large seating area with tables and chairs in the middle of the venue and on the north side there are rows of old airline or bus seats with cupholders that are amazing. You are even welcome to go down into the pit without an extra special kind of ticket The sound was great and not too loud, it was very clear and clean, the lights were well done and they even had robotic video cameras with someone mixing the video on screen and out in the bar area so you didn't have to miss what was happening. The restrooms were clean and nice. The whole thing was a great experience. I will most certainly be returning to Knuckleheads for live music!!

To start with, what other venue in KC has ample FREE parking? I feel like 10 years ago this was common, but nowadays not only is parking often pricey, but it can be harder and harder to find. With Starlight located in Swope Park, they are able to share parking with the Zoo and if needed do overflow parking into the park itself. Worst case you're walking a bit. I love that I never have to worry about finding a spot. Now, as we've moved into the modern era Starlight has enacted some clear bag policies so you'll want to read up on that. I just brought my ID , a credit card, and my phone to simplify entry. Once inside you'll be treated to the nicest outdoor venue KC has to offer. The restrooms were renovated within the past few years and are really super nice. I remember back in the day they were worse for wear, but now they are all clean, well lit, and despite it being an outdoor venue, little to no bugs. The food options appear to be decent - we ate before arriving on our latest visit, but they had solid beers available for purchase, and several bar areas which made lines move quickly. I'll finally add that you will have a vastly different experience on if you get a ticket way at the top or one down in orchestra. Of course the orchestra tickets are incredible and IMO worth the cost since Starlight keeps prices pretty fair, but I love that since it's so big and they have such far away seats, if you just want to enjoy music under the stars you can still do that here for sometimes as cheap as $30 a seat. Overall, I love this venue - especially on a nice KC night it really can't be beat if you have good seats.
