My favorite bar in the city. Like many, I've came here for many years and have celebrated my birthday party almost every year here. Love the beer selection. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because when it gets busy there's always a line for the bathroom and it's hard not to be in the way. The bathrooms also become gross towards the end, like most bars. My friends and I kept getting harassed multiple times in one night while we were in the bathrooms...meaning we were trying to hurry, but people (specifically 2 strange men) kept banging on the doors, yelling, and pushing on the doors from the outside so much that I could see the door frame cracking as they were drunkenly trying to push the door open. Realizing now why they put a dead bolt on the frame. The bartenders didn't seem to care or understand the situation. Guess we weren't fast enough. read more

A dive bar without the grunge? Sign me up! This place is tucked between a Popeye's and a bank. I overlooked it plenty of times before before it was recommended to me. This place is undergoing renovations as of the date of this review, so no food is served yet. The renovations are intended to create a food truck type kitchen to have rotating chefs. I'll definitely be back to try it when the kitchen opens! The bar is incredibly long, and dimly lit, in a romantic/not sketchy way. The bartender was incredibly friendly and my conversation with her was one of the only parts of the evening that could have beat out the beer list. I don't think I'll wait for the kitchen to open before coming back. read more

So went to the long room to celebrate my return to the city. Let me preface this review with that my stomach was incredibly angry with me. It would not cooperate at all and I wish that it had behaved itself a little bit better Moving on, so went to the long room and when we got there at 8 PM it was completely dead. The bartender was well informed on beer and their beer selection. I requested a stout or porter and he said since it's warming up I really only have one porter on draft. I always like to challenge the bartenders who work at a beer centric bar, just cuz I like to. So, he presents me with this delicious porter and my mouth was screaming with joy, but my stomach was like no thank you! Betch. So I moved to another CBC draft which was lighter on the hops and much better. I believe it was Bare Tree. So, we sit there for a bit just enjoying each other's company, when I ask the bartender if they have kitchen and he says no but there is a Popeye's next door. HOLY SH*T. I feel horrible but I totally left my friend to go get some Popeye's catfish. No worries she had her I phone on her. Also the bar had no issue with me sitting there and eating it. The bartender was very nice and even took my trash away. My stomach is still not feeling it, so I slowly move to drinking water and get through the night by just sipping little bits of beer. Then some of my friends show up, it was awesome and the bartender let me keep sitting at the bar even though I was only drinking water. Bad bar etiquette I know but they were nice enough about it. Then 10 hit and it was like everyone and their Mom wanted to drink here. It got crowded and we were still chilling out when I found out they had original sin. DELICIOUS and this is the only other bar in the US that I know that serves it. Now lets discuss the Tamale Man. 6 tamales for $5? Totally swett. Ya got some of the pork and some of the chicken and his tomatillo salsa was outrageous! LOVED IT. (update: Stomach: -36, Me:10). Unfortunately shortly after that my stomach proceeded to let me know what was up and we had to leave like at 11:30. With such a wide selection of delicious beers, ale and lagers on tap the Long Room is already ahead of the game. Add its comprehensive beer menu, reasonable prices, and friendly, personable staff and you have a legendary drinking spot that must be visited to be believed. The Long Room is long, dark, unassuming, but welcoming. It has some larger spaces at the back for groups, but the primary drinking space is a long dark wood bartop lined with comfortable chairs. It is also good to remember that the Long Room is a beer bar. They have a selection of hard alcohols, but they focus primarily on beer. GOOD beer. Going here for a Cosmo would be like visiting a steakhouse for the soup. It is becoming well-known and popular, so I'd suggest getting their early on Friday/Saturday if you want the personalized attention and guidance of the staff. If you're a beer newbie, they will guide you through the menu and make educated suggestions. If you're a beer connoisseur, you'll appreciate the selection and company of people who thoroughly enjoy what they serve. The photo booth is also an additively fun diversion after a few rounds. Be warned though, the Long Room does not suffer fools. Mean/destructive/abusive drunks will be be tossed out on their asses. read more

I've lived so close to Long Room and have only just made it here - I love this place! They have a nice little outdoor patio - key word is "little." You might not find space on the patio if you get there later on a beautiful day. They have tables and booths set up right near the patio door, so you get a good taste of outside but can stay out of the sun if you wish! My friends both ordered some sort of open-faced sloppy joe sandwich a couple weeks ago and it was great. They have a very extensive beer collection, but my favorite drink is their Cablegram cocktail. I'm so glad I finally went here - I'll be going back often! read more

Spent a few hours here last Friday for a friends birthday. If you're a beer person, you can definitely have a field day here. I had a few beers I'd never drank before and was pleasantly surprised with some of my choices. It wasn't too packed for a Friday night (meaning it didn't take forever to get a drink). I really like the area in the back where you can get a booth with your friends. The Irving Park Brown Line stop is not too far away if you want to take the CTA. Kind of sketchy looking on the outside, a bit less sketchy (but still dive-y) looking in the front room, getting better as you move back (and woah there's a photo booth!), and an amazing patio all the way back. Dog friendly. Quick service. No food when I was there, but a bunch of people brought in carry out from elsewhere. Okay, but not great bathroom. Parking on the side streets nearby. I have been here twice, once with friends from work and once with my girlfriend. This place doesn't look terribly inviting from the outside however it's a friendly, low key, dive-y sorta place which fits my needs for a bar quite well. Service is always great, the beer menu is lengthy, and I haven't had any complaints while being there. On the two occasions I have been there the bartenders have even offered a sample of the beer I was debating ordering. Like I said...great service! There is no food served here HOWEVER you can bring in whatever you want! That's a plus! I have only been here over the winter months but I hear the place is dog friendly and the patio is great. The Long Room is quickly becoming a favorite spot of ours. My boyfriend used to live only a few blocks from it and we never went. Before the smoking ordinance you could get lung cancer just from walking inside the place. It was seriously one of the smokiest bars in the city. Too much for a couple of nonsmokers. After the smoking ban The Long Room closed for a while and cleaned itself up. Now they've not only got a great beer selection, but there's no trace of smoke. It's nice inside now and I think they even added a beer garden, which we'll have to check out if it ever gets warmer here. read more

A soulful band in the background played as my roommate and I drank some sweet Tramens beer. I don't remember too much but I know I had a good time. This is one of my most favorite places to go to on a Friday after a rough work week! If you have an issue with crowds this spot is usually packed on the weekends. However, on a Friday night after work you can expect a fairly quiet evening. We've become regulars at this location for multiple reasons. The Parking lot is most definitely a help! Especially since I hate searching for parking on the street. There is also this neighborhood bar feel when you go there enough Friday's in a row. The bartender knows your favorites and more importantly knows how to make a stiff drink when need be. The extensive beer list helps too! My personal favorite that I cannot seem to get anywhere else is Original Sin. Another fave is the music. We never feel the need to hit up the juke box when we are there. Many wasted dollars have gone into the juke box at other locations because the music simply sucks. Not at the Long Room--there is always a good eclectic sound going on in the background. I have yet to visit the beer garden or the photo booth. I'm one who'd much rather enjoy sitting at her favorite table where it's cool than outside. There is always an intent to hit up the photo booth but we never do. Oh well! Maybe someday. Give the Long Room a shot and you won't be disappointed! read more

Probably one of my favorite bars in Chicago and thats saying a lot. Great chill vibe at this place and seating options. Bartenders are great and helpful. There are no TVs here which is great if you don't want that distraction. Great beer selections and bourbon options as well. Most beers are six bucks a pint which is pretty standard anywhere else. Music isn't played too loud, but just the right level and the music is pretty awesome here. I love it and will continue to go back here. read more

I can't say enough about this place. It's really an amazing bar and provides a great beer selection, both bottles and tap, from around the world. Great prices too! And who can say bad things about a small bar with Hendrick's gin available? The staff is extremely friendly and helpful when you are finding it difficult to decide on a brew. The outdoor patio is definitely my favorite area. It's comfortable and multi-leveled so you don't feel like you are invading anyone else's space. They don't serve food so I recommend grabbing something to go nearby (Mixteco Grill on Ashland/Montrose is a great choice or there is always Popeye's Fried Chicken right next door) and enjoying it with a cold beer on the patio. I've been to the Long Room twice now. I love beer and the beer selection here is very good. The prices are reasonable and the bartenders have always been really nice--happy to help me find the right beer to suit my tastes that night. (They were also glad to help me look for my keys when I'd thought I'd lost them.) The crowd here seems to be mostly twenty-something, young professionals. Not business types, but also not the hipsters of Wicker Park or Logan Square. Overall, the place is pretty laid back and not too loud to just hang out and talk. If you're in the mood for that kind of night, Long Room is a good choice. read more

I was in around dinner time, and ordered the chili Mac. I don't really recommend it; it wasn't fantastic. It was a sizeable portion, and I felt was too much in the end. The bread crumb topping was nice but overall unnecessary. The cheese did help temper the spiciness of the chili, and the sweetness of chili plus spiciness gave the cheesy macaroni a great kick. I wouldn't order this again. My friend had the grilled cheese with fries. She felt it was okay. Just typical bar (American) food. The bartenders were great. While I was here it was around the time the shifts were changing. But they both were great, personable, and helpful. I didn't feel pressured to drink anything alcoholic, which was a good thing since I was driving. I would definitely come back to try the beer on tap. They do offer tastings if you are unsure about your beer choice. Obviously don't abuse it. I loved the atmosphere; it was elegant but down to earth. The patio was great. I was originally looking at The Long Room as a possible place to host a private party and went to check it out before booking anything. Unfortunately, it's a bit small for my event, but a friend and I stayed at the bar for a few drinks anyways after checking it out since we were there (plus there was a woman with a dog, and there is no way I can resist a bar that allows dogs in it). Anyways, the bar is, well, long. My friend and I sat outside on the patio, which is completely adorable. I can imagine it gets pretty crowded as the night goes on, but at 7 PM on a Friday evening, there were people there, but we had no problem finding a table to sit and chat. They had some sort of delicious cider on tap, light and crisp for summer, that I fell in love with. My friend had the Allagash White, which is a good staple to have on tap at any bar. I love this place. Great vibe. Came here on a freezing Tuesday night (last Tuesday actually). I had a Dark & Stormy cocktail which was delightful while my boyfriend had a really great beer the bartender recommended. We were there awhile just enjoying ourselves. Service was great. My boyfriend lives nearby so we returned the next morning for breakfast. He had a really, really good chicken biscuit sandwich thing while I had the egg and cheddar cheese one. Delicious! My eggs were perfect with fresh herbs and there was so much ooey gooey cheese. The biscuits are soft, light and fluffy. I had a latte to drink and it was smooth and made just right. The Long Room is a great place to have a few drinks with close friends. The atmosphere is friendly and laid back, a far cry from some of the overly-loud and tacky bars littered throughout the city. The bar has a great beer selection, one of the best I've seen in Chicago, including all sorts of microbrews, imported, etc. They regularly switch out the taps with some great seasonal beers. Every time I go they don't have the same stuff and that's a really good aspect of this place. The bartenders are also friendly and will allow you to taste test the various concoctions on tap. read more

I came to the Long Room on a Thursday night and was immediately able to sit at the bar with my friend, which was great - it never got too crowded the entire time I was there, but it was far from dead. The killer selection of beers (including Goose Island Green Line, which made me not hate Goose Island anymore) in and of itself made me love this place, but the bartender was the one who made the night for me. He was super friendly and did a (free) shot with me since I'd finished my thesis that day. AWESOME. Also, the tamale guy came. I love that guy. read more

I really wanted to like this place. I checked this place out for there dogfish head night of the dogs event. I was excited to try all the rare beers and better yet at a bar in my neighborhood. The place was packed with people who love beer they could have used a couple more bartenders but i didn't mind waiting for a drink. The problem was when they started filming a PBR beer commercial inside the bar and had a fake bartender for the commercial. REALLY guys you decide to film a PBR commercial at your bar when your having a Dogfish head beer night? It's a slap in the face to the promotion that everyone was there for. My friends, you made all the difference for this place. If not for you, it would have been pretty awful... On the bright side of it, I was able to get that semi-private room in the back for the 10-15 people that we had. And music not too loud... On the other hand, no food. I get it, but I feel like it is a good place to be when you are 18, not 26 and up like in our case (18 - I am European :) The choice of beer impressive O.K. but 6$ per glass... I am way too spoiled with lake view specials... Music - too much rap for my liking, but tastes differ. Overall, O.K. I am not sure why people are so purple-pink about it. I live right next to two great bars in The Long Room and Ten Cats. I have nothing but great things to say about The Long Room. It is a bar that is amazing in the simplest way. Their beer selection is always top notch and the bartenders are super informative and extremely friendly. Just went back yesterday ordered a Markers Mark Manhattan followed by my go to beer Old Rasputin. Enjoyed great conversation with my girlfriend, the bartender, and other people in the bar. Such a welcoming atmosphere, definitely recommend it if you are looking for a great place to have a drink and unwind. Yes, it's a long bar in one small room, and that may seem like it's nothing special, but it truly is. It has a lot of heart, a lot of good beer, friendly bartenders, and again a lot of good beer. I love the attitude of this bar, as well as the people who work at it and visit it. The bartenders always greet you with a smile, say "hi", and notice when you are standing, waiting to get served----unlike 90% of the other Chicago bars. They have a ridiculous list of beers, and for a great price. If you have a well behaved dog, you're welcome to bring it with you. If you're hungry? Rest assured, the tamale guy will show up at some point during the night, or you can ask for their box of take out menus and order your food. The One Dollar PBR's aside, the Long Room is a Chicago Treasure. Walking into the Long Room is like walking back in time, to the day's where every Chicago street corner had a Neighborhood Bar with $1 PBR's. The bar is Dark and beat to shit. It's a dive bar. In other words, my kind of place, and did I mention $1 PBR's. There is also a wonderful outdoor patio in back where you can chill out with your $1 PBR's. There is one thing that draws me to a bar more than just about anything. And I'm not talking about the $1 PBR's, I'm talking about the music. The play list at the long room was fantastic. I heard the Smith's, Cure, Stones and even a long lost song by Siouxsie and the Banshees. I wonder what Siouxsie and the band are doing now? In a perfect world, they are preparing their new album which is a Ode to $1 Pabst Blue Ribbon. The Bottom Line on the Long Room is this. The small outside patio is a comfy cozy space to inhale toxins into your lungs,.. just be careful not to sit by the window as that is the no exhaling area and people have been known to pass out from not exhaling their breath or smoke. Photobooth room is still a rockstar here so get those cheeks warm and rosy and record some precious friend time moments. No food, but if you're nice, somebody always seems to be celebrating something here with cupcakes and maybe they may be open to sharing some. read more

Really enjoy this place! Its right up the street from me and I wish there were more places like this on Irving Park. Late night bar with great cocktails, a stellar beer collection, and wine of course. Cool, sleek, atmosphere without being pretentious, and if that's not enough, it doubles as a breakfast place in the morning! How awesome is that.
