These guys are awesome! Top notch customer service from Eric. I haven't fished for over 5 years so I needed to get all new gear. I usually go on 1.5 day trips. I bought 3 reels and 4 rods here and had to go somewhere else for the other reel since they didn't have it in stock. Coincidentally, the reel I bought at another store had issues after only 2 months. Went back to the other store and was literally told I should've done a better job servicing the reels myself. I went into Longfin to figure out what my options were and Eric took care of me beyond my expectations. He's a straight up guy, no BS. Great crew/family! read more

This is a joint review of charkbait and the longfin, as the story of each helps explain the situation. I went to charkbait with a friend a few months ago. Being new to the area and needing a new reel, I bought a $200 Okuma Cedros reel from charkbait. I took the reel out for the first time a week ago. While I was fishing, the drag loosened to the point I had the captain of the boat take a look at it, and he agreed that the reel wasn't operating properly. I brought the reel back to charkbait yesterday. The employees tested it using a scale and also agreed that the drag was rapidly loosening as the reel was used. However, they told me that it wasn't their problem and I would have to return it to Cedros for repair. I explained that I am going on a trip next week and would need the reel and asked if they could swap it out for a new one, or at least open it up and see if it was an easy fix. I thought this was fair since I bought a defective reel from their store less than two months prior. They kept saying the same thing, that it wasn't their problem and there was nothing they would do. Needing to get my reel fixed, I drove over to the longfin to have it looked at. Even though I didn't buy the reel from these guys, they looked at it for me. They talked to their Okuma rep who picked up the reel and promised to have it back to the longfin early next week so I can have it for my trip. I wonder why charkbait refused to do something so simple as spending 5 minutes talking to a rep. They didn't have a single customer in the store while I was there. Another gripe with charkbait: I had spectra and mono spoiled onto the Cedros reel by those guys. While fighting the second fish of the trip, the mono broke off of the spectra and I could tell that the break was at the knot between the two. I don't know if they didn't take the time to cinch the knot down because of laziness or they just aren't good at knot tying. The reel that I bought from and had spoiled at the longfin has given me no problems. Also, I mentioned earlier that I am new to the area. I recently moved from the east coast where we do not have the live bait supply of the west coast and, thus, typically troll for most of our fish. After explaining this to the charkbait during my first visit and asking a lot of questions about knot tying, they acted in a demeaning manner to me. I wrote it off as them being grumpy or in a bad mood, but now I know that they just have terrible customer service. The longfin folks, however have been extremely helpful, friendly and more than willing to teach me whatever I wanted to learn for as long as I wanted to hang around. When I went to the longfin to have the reel looked at, it was busy and they still took time to help me with a reel I bought elsewhere. I will not give charkbait another dollar, even if I'm in desperate need of hooks. The longfin, on the other hand, has made me a customer for life. While I was at the longfin, the employee helping me took time to help me find other stuff I needed (fighting belt, another rod, etc.) and took time to explain the pros and cons of all of the options. During a previous trip to the longfin, I had the exact same experience with another employee who was just as helpful and helped me select another Rod and reel. read more

The Longfin is a fishing tackle, bait, and equipment store. If you're planning a fishing trip, this is the place to be. Nearly everything you'd need (short of an actual boat) can be found all under one roof, the Longfin's. After agreeing to join some fellow anglers on a twilight fishing trip, I stopped by the Longfin for fishing licenses (yes, they sell those here, too). This place is huge. It looks like the building used to two story bank of some sort (remnants of a drive up window out back). Both stories are packed with all sorts of equipment, bait, clothing, and other fishing paraphernalia (for both fresh and saltwater). If you can't find it here, I'm sure the staff can special order it for you. I also noticed that this place organizes fishing trips for the serious sports fishermen (and women). I doubt I'll be partaking in one any time soon, but it's nice to know that they offer them. This place is just off the Chapman exit and the 55 freeway. This is a tackle shop I will always stop at when I'm in the City of Orange. They carry tackle for those fishing for Marlin and huge Tunas to freshwater fishermen after Largemouth bass to Trout and Crappie. If you're on your way up to fish Irvine like, stop by to pick any last minute items. They carry an array of rods and reels. An assortment of hooks, terminal tackle, plastic and hard baits. The guys are helpful and not pushy to sell you something. Aisle are clear and uncluttered. Spent almost an hour walking up and down and around the aisles looking for that one item that may get me that extra fishing on the boat. Picked up some large baits and hooks to hopefully get me that large and/or extra fish on my next trip. read more

The neighborhood tackle shop that's the equivalent of Cheers.. Where everybody knows your name.. Seriously, The people here are friendly and more often than not, the same people you run into when you're out fishing. This shop is more geared to saltwater anglers, but it does have a good selection for the freshwater guys too.. upstairs is where you'll find apparel and other misc. items to take with you on your fishing adventure.. Horrible experience at the Longfin today. Bought a Shimano rod yesterday and an eyelet breaks off on my first cast. Went back to the Longfin today and they wouldn't allow me to exchange or return the rod...their exact words were, "I don't know what to tell you, we just sell them here....go to Shimano in Irvine and they'll repair it for you." Really?! Hey potential customers, we just sell the stuff to you at the Longfin, we won't help you after. Definitely not coming back here....and I would advise anyone reading this to do the same. read more

I feel like i'm a kid in a Toy's R Us store except its for grown ups and for Fishing. The first time I went here, I spent hours, plural, walking around looking at everything they carried from rods, to reels, to lines, lurers, weights, hooks, lead heads, plastics, reel covers, rod straps, clothings, tackle bags...You name it, they have it! I've had some bad luck with the regular power pro spectra lines being too waxy and sticking causing my spool to back up and reverse stop my line from continuing to go out when I was casting. I saw that there was a new power pro slick 8 line out and was on the verge of buying it when Mr. Wakai asked me why I was getting the Power Pro. He didn't know about my situation but his experience made him speak up and recommend me another line which i'm glad I got. The Longfin's collection of Shimano Gear is quite extensive and the prices are hard to beat(even online). I ended up buying a Tallus 8' Jigging Rod and can't wait till I get to try it out this weekend. What also made me know I could trust this store is that I recognized some people that work on the open party boats out of Davey's Locker and Newport Landing buying stuff these guys. This shop offers a great selection of rods and reels as well as tackle for most any type of fishing - freshwater and saltwater (with the exception of fly fishing). They carry a broad selection of gear, from entry level to high end and everything in between. Prices are good and even competitive with online outfitters. MY GO TO TACKLE SHOP! To try and cover everything they cary would be crazy, so lets just say they have it all. Great selection, the best brands, and pretty decent pricing. Let's be honest, nothing is cheaper than buying online but you can get just plain ripped off at many tackle stores. Not here, the prices are fair. Plus they have a good selection of used gear to. I love The Longfin. I remember there was a time when I wanted to rent a house, simply because it was within walking distance to this shop. Old Man Jim is awesome and sold me some of my first pieces of real fishing gear back in the day. Eric is super-customer service oriented, and will bend over backwards to help you out. While I don't buy rods or reels here anymore, I do love coming in when my boots are worn out, for terminal tackle, awesome irons & swimbaits (they have an amazing selection), as well as getting my reels set up by the guy who does their servicing - he is amazing. Their clothing and deck shorts and foul weather gear department up on the 2nd floor is nothing short of amazing, at least for us anglers. This is a quality 2-story shop in the heart of the City of Orange, and the guys here will outfit you for any length trip, as well as for exotics. They also run the Tony Reyes Charters - so definitely look into those if you're passport ready and want to hit Mexico for some quality fishing (aka a dream come true). Fan. read more

This is not your average tackle shop. They have the most comprehensive Shimano in the area. Not even Bass Pro Shop's super store can compare to their selection. This is the only place to go whether you are looking for freshwater or saltwater gear. Not only that, but the staff is super knowledgeable and are genuinely good guys. I snapped my Shimano rod on accident. Instead of racking me for more money, they told me that Shimano has lifetime warranty and ordered me a new rod! Man, what can I say about this place. First, I was referred here from some fishing friends.this place is hands down the best I have been to so far. I purchased 2500.00 of rods and reels. Eric was super chill and took his time to make sure i was setup for the local waters. Penn torque40, fathom 30, slammer 3 6500, 2 calstar rods to match. Thanks eric for taking 2.5 hours out of your day to help me get prepared. I Went out on the red rooster we caught tons fish. I pulled out the fathom 30 paired with calstar 700xh hooked up and snap. 1" of the tip of the rod snapped not sure what happened no it wasn't slammed in a door or trunk my gear rides in the front seat with me.(have trucks)We think someone may have hit it in the rod holder and damaged some. I was devastated took the rod back to the LONGFIN and Eric no questions asked said get you a new rod kind sir. Well thank you I shall just do that. LOL I stopped by today and they were running a decent sale of mostly Shimano stuff. Shimano guy is nice enough to walk into the store to help me out (they're packed; good for them) and as he's showing me another rod, guy with elbow tattoo and thinks he's cool since he works there but doesn't wear a work shirt sticks his mug and tells us how he knows exactly which rod is the best for me. Then he says it isn't personal preference and that he knows his stuff because "he fishes tournaments". Says I'm only catching fish because it's spring. Doesn't realize I'm older than him just cuz I look young and probably fished much longer than he has. So I said "now I remember why I don't go to this store" (read original post). But what do I know? He works in a fishing store and probably succeeds in life better than anyone I know. read more

UPDATE: 06/05/15. Success! Thanks to Matt. So I went in today to pick up the two reels. I was helped by a gentleman named Matt. He was awesome. He was just what I was hoping for. He took the time to explain what I needed. He also told me about two setups. A Carolina and a dropper loop. I would have had no clue. It was really helpful. More importantly I just really appreciate him taking the time to help me, and I also really appreciate the fact that now I have a little bit of knowledge to make our first fishing experience hopefully a good one. Now its just up to the fish. Hopefully my son has a great time and if he does we'll definitely be back to the Longfin. Fail. Fail. Fail. 2 stars. I will begin on a positive note and say that this store has a very good selection and I'm sure that that's very useful for fishermen. As a long time resident of the city of Orange I can remember when this used to be located on the corner of Chapman and Yorba. Until today I have never set foot in the store and I can honestly say that I'm very disappointed. I went into the store today to get line put on two reels that I purchased so I could take my son fishing. I've never been fishing before. I know nothing about fishing. But I am very excited to take him out and I know that he is extremely thrilled. Unfortunately the man behind the counter did not share any of the enthusiasm that I do. Perhaps they have been working with expert fisherman for too long however they need to recall that there was a time when it was their first time fishing. This would have been a prime opportunity for someone to take a few extra minutes to talk to me. I'm sure the gentlemen's experience spans many many years and I'm sure he could have shared something with me that would have made my experience more enjoyable when I take my son out for the first time. I'll figure it out. I'm sure we'll have a great time. However this was a great chance for that store to possibly gain a new customer not only in myself but also my son. For life. I had purchased a reel that was not in stock at the store and was told I would be notified when the the reel was in stock, shimano however was out of the reel and it would not be available for some time. I asked for a refund and they made absolutely no problem about it, they happily helped me and the money was transferred back into my account immediately. Again, excellent customer service without a doubt. I will continue buying from them because of the way they treat their customers. read more

Check your gear if the longfin worked on either your rod or reel before you leave the store, because if they break something of yours they may not tell you and just pretend nothing is wrong passing it off as if nothing happened. That's what they did with me! I brought in to the longfin on 10/4/17 at 3pm. my 50 year old reel that was given to me as a birthday present when I was 6 years old. I had just spent half-a-day completely going through it cleaning, inspecting, and re-greasing all parts. And it "was" a great working peice of 50 year old technology with sentimental value that was still working well. I simply asked for new 8lb. line to be put on the spool so I could shore fish while in Hawaii on vacation, how could anyone mess that up? I leave for Hawaii in two days. I got home 30 minutes later and noticed that the plastic top drag adjuster was not attached to the spool, the top drag adjuster was just sitting loose in the bag. My thought was, "since it was not attached I'll pulled off the spool and see if they put a sticker or label on the bottom as to identify the lb. test for future reference". As I looked I notice all this black stuff (looked like dirt) all over the bottom of the spool, in the spool shaft chamber area, and also in the housing where the spool sits. I questioned it in my head, "how could the longfin have gotten my super clean vintage reel so dirty by just putting on new line?" (I had removed the old line myself). So with my breath I blew off what I thought was dirt and continued to put the spool back on. I next tried to screw on the top drag adjuster, but it would not screw on. Hmmm, upon close inspection, clueless longfin employee crossthreaded the plastic drag adjuster onto the mental threaded shaft and THEN kept tightening it down until he realized his mistake stripping my drag adjuster. Then he backed it out and left it off the spool and pretending like nothing happened giving it back to me without mentioning a word. Ooh, the black stuff that I thought was dirt...THAT WAS ACTUALLY NOT DIRT, IT WAS ALL OF THE PLASTIC THREADS THAT WERE STRIPPED AWAY from my drag adjuster MAKING MY REEL NOW BROKEN FOR LIFE!! Look, I get that people make mistakes. We are all human. But to know that you make an error and F*** up someone's gear accidently BUT KNOW IT, AND then say nothing about it giving the customer back his now broken product, and THEN charging him full price for putting on new line shown a huge lack of integrity. I am soooo glad I inspected the reel. I would have gotten to Hawaii with equipment that is now broken by the longfin but not mentioned to me. After being a customer of the longfin for decades, something like 30 years or so and spending thousands of dollars there,I will now choose to take my business somewhere else. Thank you longfin for fucking up my 50 year old reel. It now has a broken drag system and does not work...but it does have new line. It's not about the event people! It's about not being accountable for breaking someone else's equipment and pretending like nothing happened. Attention all customers, they broke my reel, they knew it, but said nothing. Hmmm. Absolutely the best store for anglers from beginners to experts! Been a regular there for quite some time and they always greet me with a smile and they always take the time to answer any questions I might have. Eric and his wife and the rest of the staff are all amazing people and I highly recommend The Longfin. I have read some comments where people are complaining that the staff doesn't come and ask you if you need help while you are browsing the store. What you have to understand it they are always busy spooling peoples reels and helping everyone that walks in there out and if you have a question all you have to do is ask and they go above and beyond to make sure you are helped. I go there at least 2 times a week because I fish almost everyday and love supporting local businesses especially this one. read more

I don't live close and I had the time today to make trip. Wow, this place is fricken loaded. Not to overloaded so you can't see what you're looking for. Evenly spaced so you also browse around. They pretty much are supplied with high end gear. Tackle reps sometimes have issues with certain companies so they limited to what they can supply their stores with. They obviously have a evenly tempered rep. Great job read more

By far the best fishing shop in OC staff is super helpful they will always go out there way to help you and give you knowledge about the lures you choose and how to fish them, I went in asking about rods and they showed me manny options and told me size reels to use, this is my favorite tackle shop highly recommended!!!!!!!!!!!! read more
