I can't believe my friends bailed on me. I did the High Tea experience, which required a reservation, prepaid, and non-refundable. It was a solo adventure. I went on Friday at 11:00 AM. I also recommend booking at least a week in advance. A friend said they couldn't go on said date on a Wednesday. I looked for that upcoming weekend and the weekend was sold out. FOOD: The food was delicious. Despite the tray looks small, I was full halfway in. I have no concerns or complaints of their food. Every pastries, sandwiches, and dessert were delicious. My favorite was the apple chai scone. I love their lemon curd. I love everything on their savory course. I haven't tried the dessert yet. I had to take it home because I had leftovers. The tea was delicious too! It is unlimited. They bring a pot to you. I tried the Mad Hatter Holiday (cinnamon, clove, cranberry & orange) and French Creme Brulee. Out of the two, my favorite was the Mad Hatter Holiday. The Creme Brulee was too weird for me as a tea. They offered sugar cubes, creme, and honey too. PARKING: They had a decent size parking lot on their property, as well as across the street. DRESS CODE: On their website, they mention tasteful, on the side of overdressed. I saw children in sundresses. Women wore jeans with a nice shirt. One guest had a gothic/rocker vibe with her black shirt, pleather skirt, tights, and boots. This was such a fun experience to do with my son for my birthday. He really enjoyed pouring his own hot cocoa and sampling the yummy treats. The tea menu is huge and the waiter was incredibly helpful with selecting a tea to my liking. We couldn't finish our treats so we were thankful we were allowed to bring the rest home. I loved the ambiance but was a little disappointed if wasn't Queen of Hearts & Cheshire Cat themed like it's titled for the kids tea service. My son was really hoping to see more of that and maybe even staff dressed as the characters. I was however impressed with the service, tea and treat offerings, gift shop, walk in coffee shop, cleanliness and the fact that tip was already included. I highly recommend a visit. It was my 2nd time at this cute place. This time it was for the Christmas tea with my niece and sister. The tea started off with a chicken wild rice hotdish, the scones course included a cream scone and Christmas scone served with spiced Christmas Jam and Apple Butter & Sweet Cream. Both scones were soft and delicious. The savory course had Cranberry pecan chicken salad tea sandwich, cucumber mint tea sandwich, and few other offerings. The Cranberry Chicken Sandwich was by far my favorite out of everything . For dessert we were given a Christmas gift box of sweets. They had a separate menu for the kids. Wr had a reservation for 6pm, but due to weather and traffic we ended up being super late. We called to let them know and they were super kind and understand. If you're hoping to check this place out for the tea experience and dress up then I would say 4/5 and still recommend you to try it once if Bridgerton is your vibe. But overall the price, bland food and wow factor wasn't there for me that I feel like a 3/5 stars is the fair from my experience. The decor was nice but i did expect more. The tea selection was nice and it is nice to have endless tea during your meal. I did go during the Christmas tea time so it was a limited already selected menu. It is nice to get a little bit of something sweet and something savory- just wish there was a little bit more savory options. I was here for a friend's bday and they did charge us $6 to bring in a cake from outside and serve it in. Our server was a young woman who was very friendly and even took group photos for us and let us stay longer than 2 hours. Obviously a reference to Alice in Wonderland, and I didn't have a chance to order the famous Queen of Hearts tea that people were talking about, which was okay because I got some pretty good brunch. I thought my entire experience was not something I was used to and lovely. Overall the food was pretty good in the most conventional manners. The hollandaise sauce enhanced the flavors of the crab cakes and tweedle puff, and the side potatoes and fries are pretty well-made. I got the combo skillet which contained kielbasa, ham, bacon, etc. along with eggs that I ordered as made sunny side up. Nothing exceptional to highlight, but nothing exceedingly constructive that I would offer, either! Just pretty good standard brunch food is how I would put what my friends and I ordered from the Mad Hatter. Oh, I must say the cinnamon roll looked amazing! We ordered the "crazy Alice" version if I remembered the name correctly, and the presentation was something else! It definitely allowed me to take a good photo prior to indulging in its sweetness. It was slightly hard despite the menu saying it's freshly baked, but putting some cream cheese frosting on top of a piece of cinnamon roll would make the experience more pleasant. I do not normally visit the area so I am not sure when the next time will be that I return to this establishment, but I do recommend it to those who want to experience some "old school fairy tale" vibes with themes that reflected somewhat older times! The Mad Hatter, I'm torn. I wanted so badly to love this restaurant and the experience, but unfortunately didn't live up to the expectation and hype that I thought. I took my mom here for a special mother/daughter day, to cheer her up as she's going through chemotherapy for her cancer. My mom is British, born and raised in Wales and came here following marriage at age 23. With that said, we love our high tea and have had many lovely experiences enjoying that together (mostly in the UK). However, I found out about The Mad Hatter from a friend and thought it would be fun for us to do an afternoon high tea session. Here's my thoughts on the entire experience: * Distance: It was about an 1.25 hour long drive for us. If you don't live remotely close, I wouldn't encourage the drive as the experience wasn't worth it. Took longer to drive there than it did to entertain the entire experience. * Service: Upon arrival we were seated and staff was friendly. Our waitress asked what brought us in, which I thought was interesting since I had to schedule/ book this afternoon high tea several weeks in advance. Once I explained the visit she offered drink options (variety of teas or coffee). The selection of teas was nice, they were out of 3 choices (which so happened to be the most popular choices) but no price deduction was offered for them being out of those despite reservations made for this specific experience. When you select a flavor tea, that is the flavor tea for the table and you cannot order a different tea flavor (or multiple tea flavors) until that has been completed. So choose wisely, and remember flavor has to be a mutual agreement amongst all at the table. * Food/Presentation: I did request gluten free for my mother, which only one of the sandwiches was gluten free bread. They did apologize that they weren't able to fully accommodate. I found the amount of food even for two people to be quiet small/shallow compared to what you get at afternoon high tea in the UK. I appreciated the presentation, it looked very nice, but what I didn't appreciate (and would never happen in the UK) is having all that white empty space on the tiers. The food was extremely limited and the menu seemed to make it out like there would be a lot of selection and variety. Not so. Although afternoon high tea is not a full on lunch, this wasn't even a snack. Rather upsetting to find out that once you've exhausted the items on the tiers that is it - there's no refill, etc. *** After I compared our tiers to the menu I found we were missing several items - a sandwich and dessert. I commented to the waitress when she came back around and confirmed that the kitchen forgot to plate those items for us. We had already finished all tiers and at this point were quiet upset with the experience so far. They provided an apology but didn't offer to plate those missing items - no deduction in price occurred either for this mistake. Price: Keeping this short and sweet - too overpriced for the quality and quantity of food provided. Waitresses weren't accommodating, they were hard to track down and didn't check in on how things were from our experience. Environment: the environment is quaint and lovely. I like the look and feel of what they did to restore this home into a restaurant. We appreciated the history throughout the building and the fun bathrooms. The downside is that it is a historic home and with age comes things like cold and drafty rooms. Where we were seated it was very cold and draft. I had to keep my jacket on as did my mother. Our teas didn't stay warm for long either. They tried to add some warmth to the environment with a plug in flame fireplace, just for looks as it didn't omit any heat. I would encourage sealing of the windows and adding a space heater or temperature controlled electric fireplace to warm up the space. All in all, I would give The Mad Hatter a 6/10. My hope is this was just a bad day for the restaurant and it's not normally like this. With all of the unfortunate events that happened throughout our experience I wouldn't ever visit again, nor would my British mother. Too overpriced per person, especially for the quality and quantity of food, and the lack of present staff and distance traveled was icing on the cake. read more

We each chose to do the Queen of Hearts tea which includes sweets and savory options with your tea. Our server helped us pick a couple of teas to start with and explained how to use the timer on the table to brew the right strength for each tea. They have a lot of tea options and it was so fun to get to enjoy them in these adorable teacups. The food came out in a three tier tower with little sandwiches, scones and desserts to par with the tea. Everything tasted good, but nothing really stood out to me. We recently returned to The Mad Hatter Tea House for Christmas tea and I had to come write another review about it because I highly recommend it! The place was decorated in vintage and classic christmas decor that immediately mad us feel festive, cozy and ready for some tea! We're had a perfect spot where we could set our 8 month old daughter up and could see outside and the whole room we were in, and we loved being able to watch everything come out and have a quiet area to relax and enjoy without it getting too busy and crowded. Our server was lovely, very down to earth and knowledgeable about the christmas tree menu and the classic brunch menu! My husband got the pumpkin french toast off the regular menu and I did the specialty christmas tea service. We started with an Earl Gray Lavender tea that was delicious!! My husband and even our daughter enjoyed it! Just floral enough and not super strong. The tea service also included an assortment of pastries, quiche, finger sandwiches and a chicken and wild rice casserole. Everything tasted great, the casserole in particular was a stand out, soo warm, cooked perfectly and amazing flavor! There were a couple scones with different topping that also stood out. The classic scone was my favorite, especially paired with the orange marmalade!!! My husband was a big fan of the christmas scone, said its exactly what he would want Christmas morning! In addition, he loved the french toast, and I agree it was very tasty! It's definitely very sweet, but the pumpkin and cream cheese combination you can't go wrong. We even got a couple mini desserts with the Christmas Tea service which we enjoyed with a christmas spice tea. I made reservations as a treat for my mother and her friends. The entire experience has me stuck between a three and a four star review. About a week before our reservations, which I booked online for the high tea, I was contacted four times within an hour by the restaurant to ask whether we would like brunch or tea. Frustrating before we even walked through the door. Upon arrival we were greeted and seated immediately. We all chose to add the additional first course which brought the tab to $50 per person. The food arrived and each guest was rationed 1/2 sandwich and a few thumb sized tarts. The desserts were also of miniature proportions. The scones were dry and left uneaten by most of our table. We did take them home. The ambiance is nice and kitschy, although not warm. Service was adequate, but $50 tip for a table of 5 did not feel warranted. We also heard the staff admonish a table waiting for their other guests about the time limit. That would have been okay but there were no other tables in our room. We come here every year for Christmas tea as party of our holiday tradition. $48 gets you a tower of tea treats sweet and savory, plus a pot of tea. Kids get either pink lemonade or hot chocolate in their own tiny teapot. (there are also booze options, though we never end up taking them). It's not at all cheap, but you get a LOT of food, including a to-go box of miniature cookies. I would say that the brunch options, at least the sweets, are not as good as the tea service. We have tried them, and didn't want to take our leftovers home, especially of the cinnamon roll (too doughy). Haven't tried the egg dishes yet because everyone always just wants to do tea! Her response was "The reason you're having trouble is because we're fully booked for that day. Does that make sense to you?" I was stunned. I didn't even know what to say to that razor sharp, abrupt and sarcastic reply. My late husband and I used to visit here frequently, making the drive from Minneapolis on Sunday mornings for lovely brunches on the patio. So many other Yelp reviewers before me have already said the obvious: The manager is downright rude, unwelcoming and driving people away from what used to be a delightful place for tea. Thank you, but no thank you, I will never go back because of this manager -- and all this interaction took place solely on the telephone. Had high tea here with my sister a few months ago, and it was delectable. It was her first high tea and my third, but first at the Mad Hatter, and I liked that although the pot was shared, limitless new varieties could be ordered without having to finish the current pot. It was a great way to sample the tea menu. Service was unrushed, the china was beautiful, and the finger foods were filling. She said we could trade our tea out as often as we pleased, but really it was really about as often as we could get her attention. She looked like she would rather be anywhere else than our table. She deserved 5% for her cute lavender hair and for addressing us at all. The restaurant is located along the river and by itself. It has a lot for parking and you have to walk up the restaurant via steps. Another options would be to drive up the driveway for access to a sidewalk that rounds to the restaurant entrance. The driveway makes a circle to allow you to get back to the lot. This would be a good option for persons with accessibility difficulties. It was our first time visiting and we didn't realize this so our grandma had to put in some extra cardio that day to walk up the driveway (stairs are difficult for her). The ambience of the place was warm and unique, but the interior design would benefit from more unification. It seems like they were going for an Alice in Wonderland theme but decided to give up half way and just throw random old-looking furniture together. Whether they were going for an Alice in Wonderland themed look or antique look, the current design misses both. It was not great for photos as it just looked like somebody's grandma's house. I'm glad I decided to not dress up because I would have felt very overdressed in my pastel dress and outfit. However, the idea itself is super unique for MN metro area. Other tea houses in MN are a further drive. They did not miss on the beautiful cups and saucers! Now onto the food! The brunch menu had a lot of unique food options and you could definitely have a solid meal here. There were a variety of tea options (as expected), and the desserts sounded good (we were too full to try any). Here is everything we ordered: - Fancy Tea (Jasmine Green Tea): The tea was not only tasty but ceremonious as it came in a beautiful teapot and burner to keep it warm. It was also customizable because you get to put the tea bag in and decide when to take it out. They provide you a timer and you can chose which one to use depending on how strong you like your tea. The tea itself was very good. Through both smell and taste, you could tell they used quality tea leaves to brew. - Fancy Milk & Cookies: Got this for the novelty and appearance, but it was good! The cookie was a little hard and slightly bland, but it still had a faint shortcake taste to it. It was very pretty though and I thought it was a nice touch to make them varying sizes stacked on each other (creating a more realistic flower look). The milk was very creamy and it hit the spot. I usually drink skim milk, so this milk was a nice treat (probably 2% milk?). Goes without saying that it went really well with the cookies. - Crab Cake Tweedle Puff: I didn't try it, but my grandma seemed to like it! She finished it all, which is a pretty good compliment to the taste of the food bc she usually has leftovers. She really enjoyed the creamy chicken wild rice soup (she finished that first!). The puff looked very fluffy and flaky, and my grandma didn't have too hard of a time chewing it. - Pulled Pork French Toast: A very unique and a solid mix of flavors. I typically rely on the syrup to maximize my enjoyment of french toast. However, the stuffing was so juicy and flavorful-- the syrup no longer was the main attraction of the dish. The stuffing was a blend of cheese and caramelized apples + onions. The savory sauce from the pulled pork (was almost like a broth) mixed with the syrup to create the perfect sauce for the dish (didn't really notice the taste of syrup). The sauce was the nice, finishing touch. It was very filling and fulfilled my craving for sweet and savory brunch food. I'd definitely get this again, but as something to be shared (comes in 4 pieces). - Steak Burger: This was delicious!! At first, I was skeptical on ordering it because it was more expensive than I expected and i thought that I'd rather spend that money at a restaurant that specializes in burgers. My brother ordered it as medium rare, so it came with a beautiful coloring (nice light pink in the middle). It was juicy, salted perfectly, and you can really taste the angus beef (smokey and beefy taste). The bun was a bit basic, but toppings were fresh. The breakfast potatoes were also basic (not bad, but not memorable), but their ketchup was very unique (it was darker and tasted darker like there were hints of horseradish and BBQ sauce mixed in). I came here for the novelty of a decorated tea house, and because of that, was kind disappointed when the theme was not that strong. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the food! There are quite a few restaurants that use their novelty as an excuse to serve mediocre food, this place did not slack on the food.
