Horrible. My coworker/friend asked me to go with her for lunch and I agreed. Before we left, I checked the health score (I do this for every restaurant before I go) and this place had an 87 in April of 2017. I normally don't eat anywhere that scored less than a 95, but she said she'd been here before and the Yelp reviews were favorable, so I went against my better judgement. We get there and decide to sit in the sports bar area. The available tables were dirty, so we sat at the bar. Our drink orders were taken pretty quickly and then we ordered about 5 minutes later. Aside from when our food finally came out and when we were handed the checks (without having asked for them), no one said a word to us. I ordered a house salad with garlic shrimp and at some point way before my food even came out, a waitress flung a cup of salad dressing in my direction. I'm not exaggerating. She flung it across the bar, no words spoken. She didn't even look to see where the cup landed. My friend and I just looked at each other, wide eyed. It took a long time for the food to come out. People who arrived after we did had gotten their food before us. While we waited, I looked around to spot any potential health code violations because the place is a dive as another Yelper has said. I noticed various sliced fruit in uncovered containers in the cooler with bottled drinks. The limes looked like they'd been in there for a while. There were flies swarming around the cooler. There was a bottle of cleaner up on the counter with the beer tap and the drinking glasses. I saw a pitcher of what appeared to be the same strawberry basil lemonade I was drinking up on that same counter and it was only covered by some random Tupperware lid. I was ready to walk out at that point. Finally, our food came out and everything looked good. We quickly found out that looks are deceiving. I asked for a plastic fork because the silverware looked sketchy and I kept thinking about that 87 inspection score. The garlic shrimp in my salad didn't have a trace of garlic on them, but they were indeed cooked to a crisp. They were tough and dry. There was a single tomato slice in the entire salad and it was covered with what looked like debris from the grill. My friend didn't state specifically what was wrong with her food, only that it was the worst $16 she's ever spent. Again, no one checked on us to see if we needed anything, or if the food was ok. The same chick that flung the dressing at me kept passing in front of us, presumably to gauge when she should bring our checks without having to ask if we were ready for them. She took an uneducated guess and brought the checks, we paid, and left disappointed. We will not be back. read more

3/21 I stopped in for the wings I love so much ... today I decided to sit at the bar and take him to via. I had a great bartender who help me select a beer. And I place my to go order for just wings. Just wings. And hour later still no wings ??? My sweet bartender went back to check to see what was going on with orders. She was gone for about 10 minutes and arrives with my order.... I asked if the full moon was messing with me again or if the kitchen was backed up. What I appreciate it she was honest and explained that there was just an issue in the back and that she apologize for the inconvenience. I will come back but I will be more yes sir Dash about how long it takes to make 12 wings. Three stars for my bartender! read more

Just terrible service. I'm a local and often go here because of location and convenience. It's the same story every time, their food isn't that bad (not great either) but if you ask the staff they must think it's the best in Atlanta the way they treat you. There's always a 30-60 minute wait, with at least 10 tables cleared and obviously available. They always say the kitchen is backed up...lol. You don't get acknowledged when you walk in. They act like you should know how to navigate their weird and just complex waiting list. Walk in in a Sunday evening and you'll see exactly what I mean. Hard to explain... Too bad service and customer treatment is so poor, it'd be nice to have a local place you could run to without having to work so hard as the customer. The inspiration for todays visit: There has been some debate lately about who has the best Cheesesteaks around the Metro Atlanta area, so I've made it my quest to find out for myself. I intended to try Roy's or Woody's Cheesesteaks today, but I just wasn't very comfortable with the mixture of bad reviews. So, since this place was recommended several times by other Yelpers (and closer to my home), I thought why not! I recently discovered an awesome Yelper who had a very unique style of reviewing, so I will likely be incorporating her very informative review style in with my own flavor. The Scene: A buddy called me while in route to the Mad Italian and wanted to join for lunch. We arrived around 11:30am. I arrived slightly earlier and decided to take a few pics since I didn't see any interior photo's on Yelp. Kitchen Crew became suspicious of my photography, but then invited me back to take a pic with the Chef who's been cooking steaks there for 20 years. How cool was that? I'm mad in love with Mad Italian pasta. Their sauce is amazing. I came here on a Thursday afternoon craving for some spaghetti. The place has an outdoor patio and bar. It was just a simple casual dine-in, nothing too fancy, just the way i like it. Comfortable enough to come here in my pajamas. The waiter greeted me with a big smile as I walked through the door. . Their menu looks simple and easy to read. The waiter went over the menu, it was either plain spaghetti sauce or non-meat sauce. I ordered the special spaghetti which included sausage, mushrooms, meat sauce, meatballs, and a side of garlic bread. The meat balls were pretty good. I have to start with saying this was an atypical experience. 16 of us is not what most people will experience AND we had a new waitress - I'm glad she told us. Considering we were 2 tables of 8 people, even though right next to each other, the service was a little stilted. Getting drinks refilled was the most difficult, but only because we were right by the serving station, so trying to be heard over the bustle was the hardest. Once we got our servers attention, we were AOK. I knew I was getting the Philly cheesesteak before ever walking in the door - foregone conclusion. First, this was my UYsammiE, and second, it is what they are known for. I decided to go ALL out and get the Big Daddy with mushrooms added. Oh boy! I'm not sure how you are supposed to eat a regular sized (medium) normal Philly, much less the Big Daddy. The bread just cannot support all the crazy goodness on the inside, but damn it was mighty tasty. Packed with a ton of cheese and meat (the extra meat is part of the Big Daddy's draw), and my add of mushrooms, this became a knife and fork sammie - there was no way I could pick this up unless I was the Incredible Hulk with monster hands - and even then, I'm not sure. It was definitely drippy and messy too - so I needed a shower afterwards almost. But I did not mind. The meat was well-seasoned and the mushrooms were well-cooked and not mushy. I ended up taking half the sandwich home with me and eating it for dinner - no lie. It did not reheat as well because the bread had soaked in too much of the au jus, but the insides were just as tasty and delicious. Next time I will just get a normal sized cheesesteak and enjoy every morsel on site. But I will be back, no question. read more

Mad Italian is an Italian restaurant known for it's Cheesesteaks. Yeah...Cheesesteaks. It comes in several different sizes: 10", 8", and 6". There's also a monster size, but that seems scary. I had the 10" and it was a struggle to finish it all, which I wasn't able to. The cheesesteak is pretty simple: thin sliced steak, onions, and white american cheese that melts throughout the meat. It's a pretty good cheesesteak. Everything is cooked perfectly and I love the way the cheese just blends with the meat. If you're not a fan of cheese don't order it thinking, "maybe I can scrape the cheese off." Not happening. The bread is very good. Soft, flaky, and not too chewy. I've also had the meatball hoagie which wasn't bad. The marinara sauce is well seasoned, and they add just the write amount of cheese to not overwhelm the sandwich but still get the flavor. But the meatballs were a little too...soft/mushy (?) for me. They weren't bad...I just wish they were a little firmer(?). All hoagies are served with chips and a pickle. You can upgrade chips to fries or onion rings if you want or a mixture. The onion rings are really good and I recommend trying them. The Mad Mozza Bread "munchie" is ridiculous. It's basically cheesebread w/marinara sauce. It's huge. Probably about 10" long. The cheese is thick. The marinara sauce is so, so good. Definitely get a nice bang for your buck with this. I can come here and just order this and be happy. Other things I've tasted include the Spaghetti & Meatballs (may not be on menu but just ask) and the Special Spaghetti w/Sausage. Both weren't too bad. The lunch portion is more than enough for one person (even at Dinner time). Would definitely come here for the Cheesesteaks and that Mozza Bread. read more

This is one of Chef Justin White's most favorite places in all of Atlanta. I had been here with him once before and was shocked that I hadn't left a review! Woops! The Mad Italian is known for their cheesesteaks and that's exactly what we got. Twice. Fellow Yelper Kate and Chef Justin White and I were all talking about how they always go to Mad Italian and want to try the calzone because they hear it's amazing, but the cheesesteak always wins or well that's the case for Chef Justin White and the opposite is true for Kate where she has never tried the cheesesteak since she loves the calzone. I wanted to try something new, but the memory of how amazing their chicken cheesesteak with mayo made it difficult to try anything new. We also tried the Mad Italian Bread (forgot the real title but it tastes like a mini pizza breadsticks) is also really good, but I realized after eating the heavy cheesesteaks the bread was too much for me. But when you get your cheesesteak, be sure to try it with mayonnaise, because it adds a subtle creamier element to the sub. The service here is also great and there are always people hanging out at the bar. They have beer on tap and football on TV so it can also make a fun hangout spot. There's also a bit of history involved for the Mad Italian. They actually started the concept in 1973 where it later became known as the best Philly Cheesesteak South of Philly and they actually serve New York Style cheesesteaks. Their motto is something like "fuggedaboutit," and that's exactly what we're going to do. Yesterday was our 3rd and final trip to the new place. Because of previous positive experiences at the old place (just down the street) and the ravages of the pandemic on eateries, we were willing to give the benefit of the doubt, but 3 strikes...and yer out. The formerly friendly, homey establishment has been replaced by a hard-edged, gray and cavernous place. We were met with a very unfriendly bartender, and things got worse, mainly the Philly Cheese Steak, their "calling card," was so disappointing and skimpy. I love their food and love their service!! This is one of the best Italian restaurants in ATL! If you've never visited The Mad Italian then you need, seriously. Especially if you like to eat Italian. Unfortunately I'm not going to be able to describe my experience actually eating inside the restaurant, I always get take out. I'm always picking up my food on the go. Whether it's to head down to the drive-in (yes I like to eat Italian while watching a movie) or vacating at the near-by Marriott on a weekend getaway. Either way, the food is still good and the experience I get out of eating it no matter where I'm digging in is all the same. One of these days, who knows, you may catch me actually sitting in the restaurant digging in. The prices are very reasonable, this is always good to know. Great cheesesteaks! I've been coming to The Mad Italian since I was a kid. They have some of the best cheesesteaks in the city. The cheesesteaks are pretty simple, they are served on a soft roll with cheese and diced grilled onion and come with a side of potato chips (you can get fries for an extra $0.99). My go to is the Big Daddy cheesesteak ($14.49) made with extra meat, cheese and onion. One of the best little things about The Mad Italian is their creamy Italian dressing, it goes with everything. I love to dip the chips in it as well as slather it on my sandwich. In addition to the cheesesteaks, their pastas and baked pastas are very good. The service is always good. Parking can fill up during peak times of the day but usually isn't too much of a problem. read more

I love the cheese steak here but the customer service is severely lacking. I called in for lunch and ordered a cheesesteak. I was on hold for 10 minutes before someone came on the line. Mind you I take my lunch break at 3:30 I didn't mind because I assumed that it was very busy when I arrive 10 minutes later, after placing the order, only three customers were in the entire place. Then the bartender was arranging receipt or something of the sort, and she proceeded to tell me that my food is at the end she can ride with me and then she waited another 2 to 3 minutes and then handed me my food. which the order was wrong on but they corrected it. the last time I went I sat at the bar I ordered food to go and I wanted to order a drink but the bartender never came back to check on me so I ended up getting my food first and then leaving after sitting here for like 30 or 40 minutes waiting for the food so you would think that she would've checked on me asked me did I wanna order a drink while waiting? read more

I was up in Philly for Memorial Day so naturally you can figure out what I ate there. And randomly last week a craving struck for one...so I checked Yelp and found the Mad Italian is not too far from work, and bonus points it's on Scoutmob. Since the Scoutmob deal required dining in, I did some overtime and headed over for dinner. I think I got there around 6 and it wasn't very busy. I had pretty much decided what I wanted hours earlier sandwich-wise, but decided to have a beer to go along with the sandwich - they've got a pretty decent selection of Georgia beers on draft. I got an 8" Philly and upgraded to fries. The fries were really good, glad I went with them and I'd definitely pay the dollar they are extra w/o Scoutmob for them over some chips. The sandwich was decent, definitely works as a substitute for getting all the way up to Philadelphia and having one again (though by one I mean my great uncle ordered like six sandwiches in a variety of types and cut them into thirds so "one" ha ha ha). Would I come back if the craving hits? I'd most likely try out some other places I haven't been to first. It is good, but unless everything else is godawful I am holding on to hope there is a better "best Philly" in this city. read more

I actually came here for my 1st UYE! Parking is decent - not too shabby. Came here during lunch on a Saturday. I think if I remember there are other shops right next Mad Italian, so I did see some people park in their lots and walk on over. No idea if they're strict or not. I know they're known for their cheesesteaks but....I can't eat that much cheese :( I get super sick. Instead I got the Meatball sub. I was slightly worried they'd overdo the cheese on this, but they didn't. YAY! Extra star. Instead the sauce was more emphasized, which I was very happy about. The Meatball sub wasn't bad at all. I actually want to get it again when I come back. It's pretty big too. I couldn't finish it. I got the regular size. The bread was really good for some odd reason haha. Tasty to me. Wish my darn cheese allergy would go away!!! The environment is pretty chill. Wouldn't mind coming back with my bf on a random date night. Staff members were also great. Raelene was our waitress, she was very attentive, funny and nice. My fiancé order the bake lasagna, decent portion size, fulfilling but lacked spices or extra flavor. I ordered the Chicken Penne. The dinner portion is big, I would recommend sharing it or ordering the lunch portion. It has a lot of Vodka sauce a little overwhelming but tasty. The grilled chicken was very tasty. Best philly in the south! Service was good even though it was crowded. The garlic butter shrimp salad was excellent as well.

We came to celebrate a friend's good fortune, so he picked the location. I was hoping for a place with fewer carbs since I'm trying to burn ketones, but everyone found their perfect meal (even me). I got a large salad, and I do mean LARGE. I added grilled chicken for only $4.99 extra and it was nearly the entire bird. Chicken strips were falling off the plate there were so many (but I caught them all). I chose the jalapeño dressing and it was killer. Others had cheese steak hoagies and lasagna , and everyone was thrilled. We ate outside on the safe spacious patio on an unseasonably warm February day. Service was great and prompt. One of the servers wore a Bob Marley apron, so I gave him the universally understood head nod. I had a feast fit for a king and kept under my daily carb limit (proven tonight with a ketone strip showing purple positive). I was finally able to join the group for another of Lindy's UYSammiEs! I brought the two boys with me, and the serving team did a great job of accommodating us. Lindy had warned them, so the kids' menu and crayons were ready and waiting. They grabbed me a high chair quickly and separated the tables so that it would fit right next to me. I debated getting the meatball sandwich, but since they're known for the Philly cheese steak, I decided to go for that. And when Tanya added mushrooms, I knew that was the way to go. So I ended up ordering a medium, add mushrooms, and sub onion rings ($1.99) for chips. For the boys, I got them each the cheese pizza kids option, which is half a thin crust cheese pizza. The boys' pizza came out early. It was very cheesy and a little on the greasy side, with a crisp thin crust. The toddler didn't like it, the baby just sucked off the sauce, and I enjoyed the bites that I got. As for the cheese steak - cheesy steak part with mushrooms was flavorful and delicious, but the hoagie roll couldn't handle the weight. It was soft and soggy and turned this philly into a knife and fork sandwich. The onion rings were very greasy, and I would not recommend them. My wife and I have been here a couple times and each time there's always been this weird vibe from the staff and in the restaurant overall, but we thought it was just us. We attempted to go again and sat for a while waiting for a host or hostess to come seat us. We were pretty much ignored, however when two sets of white guests came in they were immediately seated. A friend suggested this place so I gave it a try. The restaurant was spacious and clean which is a big plus. I went to the bar area to order and I received great friendly service. I ordered the Philly cheese steak sandwich because the menu claimed that they served the best Philly in the South... I had to find out. The sandwich was very good (I've never had a Philly Cheese Steak from Philly so until then I have nothing to compare it with except for other Atlanta restaurants that make it). It was made well and with care...meaning that it was nicely and neatly wrapped, my chips were covered as to not get soggy and even my pickle was tucked away ever so slightly so that the chips stayed dry. I was offered water or ice tea while I waited. This was a very good experience and I certainly will be back to dine in and try other things on the menu. read more

The best way to find a quick, affordable, and filling lunch is to take a look at parking lots while driving on weekdays. If you see construction crew trucks, painters, or landscapers you know you'll get a big meal for not much dough. That's the main reason why I tried this place while running some errands in Chamblee. The Mad Italian has been around Atlanta for ages, and the interior of the restaurant certainly feels that way. The food is a mix of subs, calzones, and pastas. There's nothing very special about the food, but it delivers on big portions and won't break the bank. The calzone I had was nicely done, and the service was friendly and fast. Judging by the weekday parking lot rule, lots of other people in the area hit this place for a quick midday lunch. read more

The past 2 visits in May, the food has been great. The service, not so much. The service puts such a bad taste in my mouth that I probably will not return for a good while. During the pandemic, they set up a call in order system where one would: pull in, park, order food, wait 15-20 minutes, then pull up to the drive to pay/pickup. There is limited dine in options and tail gating available via a "pandemic operation setup". On both visits, I ordered take out. The first visit, my call was timely answered. The person taking the order seemed pretty normal. It was until I picked up my food... 1) the food runner was unfriendly and borderline disrespectful 2) frantic as they rushed to stuff my bag with napkins but no silverware - mind you, this was a take out order 3) then looks at me to take payment and pressures me to leave a tip?! On the second visit, (I drove 30 minutes) I called in to order ahead and was put on hold the entire time. I finally pull in and read the sign to confirm if the same number was being used for take out orders compared to the number listed online. (I thought it was little strange being on hold so long) I pull in and I see through the window that the employees are just fooling around and someone is using the phone? Did it take someone 30 minutes to place an order? I hung up, and tried dialing again and was put on hold for another 25 minutes. The entire time, I looked through the window and it was the same thing. I watched the employees inside just fooling around and laughing. Who is taking the phone orders? Why is the line held up? Why am I on hold for so long? Someone finally answered to take my order, again the person taking the order seemed calm and normal. I didn't ask any questions or make a fuss for being on hold so long. I placed my order, waited, drove around for pickup after 20 minutes that I was instructed to do. 1) food runner didn't seem to care too much about working and just had a plan dry attitude (sure, fine. my total time waiting is now approaching over an hour, but it's okay- I am hungry, just give me my food and I will be on my way...) 2) I am asked if I want to tip... I said no. Not this time. I paid for my food and drove off. 3) no silverware for a take out order- again? 3) Later that evening when consolidating all my purchases for the day (my normal self accounting regime) I noticed that they charged a tip on my receipt?! I clearly communicated NO and they tipped themselves... thieves.... I don't have time to argue this. I can already image what the management is like. I see it on the past Yelp reviews as well. You can keep the tip! Though it was not deserved and extremely absurd. Not to mention very unfair for the sincere ones who really work hard... I think people need to understand, working at a restaurant was a personal choice for employment. Hand outs and praises for essential workers are optional during a pandemic - NOT mandatory. In the end of the day, you are choosing to work and choosing to where to work. You are NOT entitled. You do not deserve a trophy for working. Everyone has to do it one way or another. If anything, a restaurant should be grateful for the community support and be glad they even have customers during a pandemic or not. If you want to have a bad attitude then leave? Oh yeah, but then you can't collect unemployment...at least legally. Also, tips are optional! You are NOT entitled to them just because you are working in the service industry. Tips are earned through providing great customer service. I get it, everyone has a circumstance. Especially during these times. However, that does not justify treating customers, who just came to eat good food, with an negative attitude. It is so sad to see people who are selfish and self entitled. I forgive The Mad Italian for stealing from me. I hope the best of luck to the employees and owner(s) of this establishment. I am also sorry to the employees that really give their all and take pride in the work they do but who are guilty by association. read more

It was our first time here and we definitely will be back! The hubby had the baked lasagna and I had the Alfredo. He described his baked lasagna as meaty and very cheesy. Yum! I had the Alfredo. The "small" portion was plenty for me and was served with two extra yummy pieces of garlic bread. We have heard that the Philly Cheesesteak is amazing! One of my husband and I favorite food. I don't know for what reason the last time I ordered cheese stake sandwich is kind of salty.

Been a fan for 30 years but the cost now greatly exceeds worth. As the other locations faded away over the years, so have the best menu items. The online menus, even on their own website, are either outdated of just plain fraudulent (The "Big Daddy" cheesesteak shows $13.99 on their own online menu and $20 one the table menu. Finally, the reason I'm writing this review, is that the waitress charged for two drinks. We had one tea and one water. When I asked the waitress she stated that they charged for the refill. The price of a drink is already $3.39 and she charged for two. Because she didn't correct the error, and then told me the restaurant charged for refills, I have to think that she was padding the check. Food is still good even though pricey, new location is nice, but tonight did it for me; no more Mad Italian for me after nearly 40 years of patronage. read more

Holy moly this place was really good! Picked up some take out after a workout and I was really impressed with the portions and flavor! Really liked the chicken cheesesteak and the garden salad with grilled chicken - fresh veggies and perfectly-seasoned chicken. Tried to use a Scout Mob deal and failed to read that you have to dine in. That said, we will be back to use it! read more

Good Cheese Steak at a good price. I haven't had anything other than the cheese steak so it's not fair to comment on their food but decent menu. Nice outside dining area with a decent bar. read more

I'm baffled this place has 4+ stars. I can cook better Italian food than The Mad Italian offers. The ingredients are really low quality, which is half the problem. The first several times I went the staff was very nice, which made up for the bad food. Then, after at least a dozen visits, the manager or assistant manager was so nasty and yelled at me bc I was dining on the patio with my dog (who had been there at least 6 times). Keep in mind that the server actually seated me with my dog and said my dog was welcome. Needless to say, I will never return. read more

OK. Montgomery Boy, previously mentioned, graduates to being referred to when mentioned in a review by a real moniker, C. See, an amazing cheesesteak and a seven hour date will do that to a girl. Today, when he arrived to pick me up, there was a nice hello but then he couldn't contain his burning desire for a cheesesteak. Specifically, one from The Mad Italian, which he proclaimed to be the best in the city (when he lived here, he and his coworkers "went Mad" on the regular). I am game to try pretty much anything (and having only ever had such at Woody's, I really didn't have too strong of an opinion on this sandwich and it is not something I would typically crave or order) but how could I say no to his obvious excitement at the prospect? I could not. I scanned the menu and was initially leaning to something simple, like a pasta dish with red sauce, a spinach calzone or cheese pizza, things I would typically try first at a casual Italian place such as this, then if I dug, progress to a broader variety of things. But he was intent on a cheesesteak (theirs come on warm bread with a ton of meat and toppings of your choice) that I decided maybe he knew of what he spoke and I went with exactly what he was having: the sandwich with just sauteed mushrooms (there were a very generous amount, yay as I adore mushrooms!) and a side of the creamy Italian dressing. Call it a delicious meaty treat or the effects of what turned out to be our day, this girl is in real like. With the sandwich and the boy. Service was good - pleasant waitress, drink refills, prompt food - but we didn't need much attention between talking and devouring our sandwiches (I actually ate all but two bites of mine and I never get that close to finish anything!). I love that from the cool new places to the old standbys, we eat well together. Game on and yeah, I will go back for more of the sandwich, too. read more

You must, must, must try the Philly cheese steak! Yes, I know, it's an Italian restaurant, and yes, the pastas and pizzas are awesome. That being said, every time I go and don't order the cheese steak, no matter how delicious the meal is, I'm always a little sad when I walk away. They had a formal dining area as well as a bar area where you can watch your favorite sports team. The staff is always friendly and welcoming. They provide a relaxed and family friendly atmosphere. read more
