A lot of history here since 1973

My Philly-area born husband definitely votes for The Mad Italian as having the best cheesesteak in Atlanta! They also have a great gluten free pizza crust. The "Ghost" white pizza with spinach was delicious. Despite the crowds on a Saturday, our server was friendly and efficient. The restaurant has a very casual atmosphere with a large area with tabletops near the bar.

The Mad Italian is a quick-serve cafe with a patio which is known for cheesesteaks, hoagies and pastas served with beer and wine. We have tried their Pastalaya made of Diavolo and alfredo sauce blended with grilled chicken, shrimp, Italian sausage, onions and green peppers. I was worried because it is their take on Jambalaya, but it was a wonderful burst of flavor. Garlic bread was a complimentary with our dish. Steven was our server for the day. Plenty of free parking in and around the restaurant. The Mad Italian first opened in Atlanta way back in 1973 and they have been going strong in Chamblee, GA ever since 1981. Their original location in Chamblee closed within the past ten years or so and they have a pretty much brand new spot literally about two doors down on Savoy Drive. Fantastic, modern restaurant facility. Unbeatable location. Top notch service. Friendly ambience that feels like home. Excellent service. And the best food you can get for the price.

The hubs and I went specifically for the cheese steak. He read somewhere that this was a spot to visit for this. We pondered about the sizes and what to share. Of course he just went with the big daddy cheese steak because it's a 12 inch with extra meat. The sandwich didn't look at all that big as it was brought out, but looks were deceiving. Since there were lots of ruffle chips and a spear of pickle, the sandwich looked small. But the meat was loaded onto there. And after eating it for awhile, you can start to taste the saltiness. Yum. I like my cheese steak to be more on the simple side so this hit the perfect spot. There was only onion pieces and cheese on top aside from the monstrous amount of meat. The hubs also enjoyed it but preferred bell peppers, mushrooms, or the sort loaded on. The side of fettuccine alfredo was good. It was flavorful and tasted like what you would expect: creamy and buttery. We've made alfredo sauce at home before, and this was on par with what alfred fettuccine would look and taste like.

I came here specifically for the cheese steak. I had to get the big daddy cheese steak because I was sharing with the wife. I had chips and ordered a side of fettuccine alfredo with it. Carbs on carbs. We were going to take a nap after this. The steak was simple. It had lots of meat and cheese. It was delicious but not the best cheese steak. It wasn't too salty but the meat itself didn't have a bite to it. I'm in strong opinion that cheese steak needs some other crap in it such as mushrooms or peppers but this was still very good. 4/5. The chips were were forgettable but the pickle that came with it was decent. The fettuccine Alfredo was flavorful enough but it needed a little more butter. 3/5 Would I come here again? Maybe. I have a few cheese steak places much closer to my place so I don't see my self commuting just to this place.

I have a collection of restaurants that I have on my want-to-try list and this one has been there for a while. I finally made it over there today and here are my thoughts: Food: I ordered a chicken cheesesteak. I asked for a different cheese selection and to have lettuce & tomato added to the sandwich. I also wanted a healthy side option and was offered either salad or broccoli (I chose the latter). I was a little surprised when the bill came with +$1 for lettuce, +$1 for tomato, and +$4 for broccoli. That was +$6 for a small sandwich that was already $12. They tasted great, but I can't recommend it for the price tag. Service: No major issues outside of not being informed of the hefty up charges. Ambiance: It's got an old-fashioned feel inside with antique signs and Italian flag decor. Plenty of tables and would perhaps work with small groups as they have a small section of seating that is separated from the main dining area. But... while there is plenty of space inside, parking was a problem. We had to circle twice to get a spot at lunch time.

I love love love the Philly cheesesteak here! Have you ever gone to a restaurant and the food looked and smelled so good that you forget to take a picture? Well that's me every time I eat here! I found them at the Atlanta Brunch Fest last year and still can't get enough! I really do have to try other menu items! Or do I!

Food, Service and Atmosphere was great. Would definitely visit again if I was in the area and recommend to others for a casual Italian meal at a reasonable price. Daughter & I split the 8" Philly Cheesesteak, it had plenty of meat and the bread was delicious and it was a definite hit with both of us. The restaurant split for us and brought on separate plates with our own pickle and chips without us asking which was a definite plus and greatly appreciated. Chips were not homemade but we're not your standard Ruffles and we're so good as was the pickle. Granddaughter bragged on the pizza and ate it all up.

My buddy recommended me here. Was in town and wanted a Chicken Philly, but didn't want to drive down Big Dave's or Philly Style. Those my other two spots. Gave this place a shot. WINGS, dried and over fried, hard. Was like cajun rub or some type. But Philly was on point. Not sure about the whole menu, but the Philly is a must try. So soft, that bread. But I believe it's only in one size.

The server was great, welcoming each person as they arrived and taking drink and starter orders almost immediately. I had the nonalcoholic Just Peachy cocktail which was bright, fruity, and had a spiciness from the ginger beer. The table shared some appetizers: the white truffle garlic bread, the arancini, and the zucca chips were all tasty and the portions were large enough for sharing. For an entree I chose the trottole chicken pesto. It came in a bowl and it was a little too dark in the dining room to see the components. However the dish was delicious and I ate all of it. I especially liked the crunchy pine nuts among the soft pasta and the flavorful pesto. I didn't really detect any chicken although I'm sure it was there; it just wasn't noticeable in the taste. I was too stuffed to have dessert this time, but next time I visit I want to try the Hazelnut Torta or the Salted Caramel Budino. This was a nice place for a book club meeting. There was plenty of space and it was not loud, so we could talk easily.

But as the night went on it deteriorated. We had the calamari and meatball appetizers. Both were delicious and came out promptly. We also had wine by the glass for three of us and one cocktail. Those all came out promptly. It took quite some time for the waitress to come around to finally take our Entree order and it took even longer to actually receive the food. Just as we were starting to complain the food came out. However we had been waiting for refills on our glasses of wine for more than 15 minutes. The refills finally came out several minutes after the food arrived. Had the waitress arrive without the drinks I was ready to cancel them. Two of us had the Bolognese and one of us had the chicken Parmesan. I don't recall the third meal, but it was also a meat sauce and noodle meal. The Bolognese consisted of thick bready noodles with no flavor whatsoever and very little meat and tomato sauce. I had to pick through the noodles to get a little bit of meat sauce. I was told the chicken Parmesan had little or no flavor. And was really just a big plate full noodles and breaded chicken with some tomato sauce and calories. The meal was over $400 for four people so I expected much more than what we got. We all agreed that we would not be back. it's a nice looking trendy restaurant, but food and Service has a long ways to go.

One may ask, what in the world is that! It is a rosemary focaccia with whipped ricotta. I believe we had 2 orders for our table of 4. I love a good dirty martini and theirs is awesome-preferably with blue cheese olives. Between the four of us, we went with the first 4 pasta's on the primi. My favorite had to be the bucatini. It is a super rich carbonara that is to die for! The agnolotti was a close second with short ribs and truffle butter. Again very rich! But in my opinion, an Italian meal should be rich. For dessert, we went with the ricotta cheesecake and the white chocolate bread pudding. Although the cheesecake was very light and airy, the bread pudding was next level. I would drive down to GA just to have a bite of this! Really look forward to stepping foot in Valenza next time in Brookhaven.

After devouring the apps, we decided to order a pasta and pizza to share as our main dish. The pasta we went with was the Mafalde Alla Nerano which was quite light yet flavorful. It had zucchini, basil and chili flakes and the sauce was super light and tasty. The potato pizza was intriguing so we decided to go with that which had thinly sliced potatoes around the crust and goat cheese and drizzled in honey. It was definitely something I hadn't tried before but really enjoyed eating. Since the portion sizes were big, we went home with plenty of leftovers for another meal. Overall, I really enjoyed coming here for dinner, and can't wait to come back!
