On the way in, the door person asked for whose name the tickets were under. Boom, done. In we went. So much quicker than all the faff of will call windows and showing a ticket in your phone. Just give the name, and keep it moving. The stairs into the venue are treacherous. This is not the place to risk heels. Wear a sensible shoe so you don't end up on your face. If stairs are a problem, this is going to be a bad time. Once you get in, it's these chairs that are set up for you to sit in to watch the show. Again, the venue is tiny, so if you choose to sit up front like we did, you're practically atop the stage. Because it's such a small space, the actors are able to really show their emotions and actions without being encumbered by sound equipment. You hear their voices as they speak, see their faces emote, watch their whole body go into the character, and are right there to experience it. We were there for almost an hour exactly, as the show's run time was like 50 minutes and change, and the intro and outro was pretty quick. The seats were comfortable to sit in, but if you're a heavier person, you might want to sit at the end of the row, because these chairs don't give you much breathing room. They're all next to each other, so you're up close and personal with your neighbour. Getting out was also really quick. It was so nice to be able to get to a venue, get in, get seated, have the show start, and get out with so little fuss.

They present a drum for donations to support the venue. I really like that. Obviously, no one is getting richer in dollars, but the entire participating community grows richer in art, voice and humanity. What's more, Under St. Marks is surrounded by restaurants. I came here to see the play "Pound"…read more The Lion Theater is inside of Theater Row, a complex of several theaters (similar to a movie theater). Lion Theater is pretty intimate with 50-100 seats. The theater complex has bathrooms and a lounge area in the 2nd floor. I found the bathrooms to be very clean. Some of the staff was very nice, especially the bartender in the 2nd floor lounge and the ticket usher who checked me in the lobby of the theater. They smiled and made brief conversations when patrons talked to them. However, I found the box office staff to be slightly rude. They did not smile or say "hello." In fact, the young woman threw my ticket onto the counter. The play was great! However, one of the actors messed up his line and another actor read lines from the actual script. I found both incidents to be distracting.

Last Saturday, four of us went to see Kevin McDonald's "Superstar" at the Soho Playhouse. The show…read more- a rock opera - was great and so funny! Dave Hill opened with a set beforehand. It was a 7pm show in the larger theater space (there's a smaller stage by the bar inside). Seats are first come, first serve. We came early (around 6:25pm) to wait in line outside, so we got seats up front in the third row. Heads up - with the theater lights on, it's hot in there. One of the performers (Janeane Garofolo as the obligatory rock opera narrator) even said something on stage about it (impromptu but a true statement). Another heads up - visually it won't be clear where to line up outside for entry and meet-and-greets. Keep your ears open for announcements from the hard working staff at SoHo Playhouse. They are friendly and informative, and cool peeps. If you're a history person, you'll enjoy visiting Soho Playhouse because it was the former estate of Aaron Burr, George Washington headquartered up in there for the Battle of Manhattan, Tammany Hall headquarters circa 1900s, and was a speakeasy during Prohibition. Cherry Lane Theatre is New York City's oldest continuously running Off-Broadway theater. Located in…read morethe West Village, it has a storied history. Major American plays were put on at the theater - by writers including F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Dos Passos, Eugene O'Neill, W. H. Auden, Gertrude Stein, Samuel Beckett, Pablo Picasso, T. S. Elliot, Tennessee Williams, Lorraine Hansberry, Edward Albee, Sam Shepard, David Mamet... The film studio A24 bought the theater in 2023. After an extensive renovation, the theater reopened in the fall of 2025. I visited the theater last week for a performance of You Got Older. The play was great. The theater is small and intimate and was very comfortable. It felt more like an upscale movie theater than a theater (cupholder in the seat in front, comfortable spacing between the rows). My only complaints are small. I don't mind paying $20 for a glass of wine, but if I do, I'd prefer an actual pour. They're charging $20 for half glasses of wine in tiny plastic cups. It's natural wine, and I'm sure it's pricier than what other theaters are pouring. But $20 for that amount of wine almost made me laugh. Or cry. My other small complaint is that there's no lobby to speak of. When you walk in, there's nowhere to go - some people were standing in the concessions line, thinking it must be the line to scan your ticket. It's just tight. There's nothing they can do about that, since it's a small, historic theater. But the next time I attend a performance, I'll probably show up just a few minutes before - it'll save me money on a second thimble of wine, too. I really enjoyed my first performance at Cherry Lane Theatre. It has an incredible history and is now a plush, comfortable little Off-Broadway theater option. If their future theater productions are anything like You Got Older, I'll be back.

I don't want to give too much about the play away because I know she will perform it elsewhere but if this is the sort of theater coming out of Cherry Lane, it's a harbinger of good things for the future. The theater itself is quite intimate, with only 16 rows or so. I was near the back and didn't feel like I had to squint to see the performance on stage. Whoever did the set design made very good use of the stage space such that the audience could feel transported into different "rooms" and time zones. Acoustics were pretty good too though I would occasionally miss a part of the dialogue over the sound of the cacophonous laughter in the audience. There is a bar in the front and you can bring drinks into the theater. I wish I could've also checked out Wild Cherry, the restaurant attached to the theater, but it's too poppin right now. Some of the best stars got their start at Cherry Lane and it's lovely that they're drawn to such a place a short subway ride from where I live.

It's only $45, it's an hour and 27min long, and within a block from our bus pickup! Talk about awesome and blessed timing!! The theatre is aside/under the Luke's church, which is about two blocks down from Times Square. Tiny intimate and no bad seats, we lucked up and chose the 7th row which actually is the first row of the first/only riser. It was a minimal crowd so no one was in the row in front of us anyway, but we would have had views a few inches above their heads (hint. Choose 7th row seats). Theatre was maybe 1/4 full for this 430p Sunday afternoon st Patty's day, but that didn't deter the performers. They were on point as though they were facing a crowd of 1,000 at the Kennedy center! The singing and dancing were great. The story interesting. Each character having their own demons to deal with and beautiful voice to push them out. Touching African American history and women's history and entwining it with jazz and blues and r&b was awesome! It was the highlight of the one day outing to NYC. A seriously unexpected pleasure. A highly recommended gem -affordable -convenient - intimate. The crowd was rocking and singing and all enjoyed. It's small. So don't expect orchestral accompaniment - there's one guy and he's in charge of pressing buttons to make sure the music comes on when it's supposed to. And he never missed a beat. The entire play is in ONE room/scene "grandmas attic". And there's no real costume changes. But despite this, one isn't "bored" nor anxious for a change. The conversations and song flow naturally and keep you engaged and interested. Not too slow nor fast. Not too conservative but not rancous either. Well rounded. Well written. Well acted. Well sung. I can only hope to stumble upon more "off Broadway" pieces like this one when I return on occasion this summer

This performance of Cabaret was such an incredible experience! The August Wilson Theatre is currently housing the Kit Kat Club and features a round rotating stage in a delightfully intimate venue. From my vantage point, I couldn't spot a seat with a bad view. And the acoustics are amazing! As we entered, our phone cameras were stickered to block guests from taking photos during the performance. I willingly obliged, but was surprised to be reprimanded long after the show had ended & all the performers had left the stage. I did save my sticker & it lives on my laptop now. The pre-show performers were fascinating, and the musicians were equally talented. We splurged on FRONT ROW tables with the stage side dining and have zero regrets. We were literally inches from the performers! The amount of charcuterie served to us was egregious, and we appreciated the option to pack everything into takeout boxes for snacking later. Extra notes that may or may not be helpful: on our way to the theatre, walking up Broadway from 45th Street, my friend tripped & sprained her ankle, so we needed to take a Lyft as she couldn't continue walking. Luckily my husband was with us to help her limp through. Upon arriving at the August Wilson Theatre, we found the entry door for stage side dining wasn't very close to the box office, and my friend was too flustered to find her ticketing email, so I walked over to the box office. I only needed to give her name and our four tickets were printed quickly. Once inside, the theatre manager brought over some instant ice packs & medical tape for my friend's ankle to use during the show. I enjoyed this show SO MUCH. The August Wilson Theatre has been perfectly recreated into the Kit Kat Club! I definitely want to see Cabaret here again with the current cast, and also future casts.
