I guess I have no one but myself to blame: reviews of the main dining room are a 3 star average, but I just *had* to have a dining experience while staying at the Greenbrier. The main dining room is supposed to be the best restaurant on property. If that's the case, I shudder to think what the others are like. The best part of the meal was the complimentary bread basket. The cornbread was good! It had corn kernels and either bacon fat or bacon in it. Served with a fancy schmancy pat of butter with their logo. We all started off with a cocktail which were fine, and the only items that were "reasonably" priced at sub $20/each. My beet carpaccio was a letdown. I think they were trying to go for a sweet and savory mix with the dollops of whipped ricotta and blackberry jam. I also got the cream of five onion soup, which was unique, but nothing spectacular. It was also the most expensive bowl of soup I've ever had at $18! My fiancé got the wagyu beef tenderloin tartare and the "crispy skin West Virginia trout". The trout skin was not at all "crispy" and the trout itself was dry. I'll give it to them for portion size though: it was massive and that orzo took over half of the plate. My coworker got the lobster tail and shrimp and that lobster tail was so small it was more like a crawfish. LOL. She said it was also dry. Two hours in, we all had enough at that point and passed on dessert. 20% service fee, 6% sales tax, 9.75% historic preservation fee. So basically tack on a whopping additional 36% on top of the already exorbitant prices. Service was fine, although a bit slow (I think it was the kitchen). Jacket and collared shirt required for men. Generally, the entire resort follows a dress code. Reservations required and made by phone only. Total joke, the dining room was at most 25% full the entire time we were there and that was on a Friday evening at 7pm. read more

The food was ok, definitely not worth the price tag. My Caesar salad was really bad.. very little dressing and bitter lettuce. Nothing fantastic about it. I ordered the filet. It was good but not $69 good. It was fun dressing up and going to a fancy dinner, but we were disappointed. The dining room in general needs a good cleaning as well. Noticeable cobwebs in the windows, water leaks in the ceiling tiles, etc. Neat experience, but don't go thinking it's going to be the best meal ever. read more

Had breakfast here on Saturday morning. They have several options - from ordering off the menu to ordering the buffet. With the price of one dish at $20, it would make more sense to try a variety of options for $35 right? Thank you. I ordered the buffet and a coffee, vowing not to gorge myself and just sample things. I got the country style scrambled eggs, small patty sausage, waffle quarters and some home fries. The eggs were great - prepared perfectly, the sausage was very good, and the waffle and syrup was incredible. The home fries though had onions which were slimy worked through and I wasn't a fan of. On my second trip, I scooped a croissant, and some bread pudding with vanilla sauce. They both were very good. The staff was very attentive as well, and the dude dressed like a lieutenant was quick to refill my coffee. Would recommend having breakfast here. read more

The main dining room was closed for dinner while we were visiting but we enjoyed breakfast there. We went primarily to have the chance to see the interior more fully. It's really over the top with crazy spectacular chandeliers so that was fun. We had a nice view out the window and enjoyed our breakfast. The food was nothing special. For the price, it was somewhat limited. I would have hoped for at least an omelette station or a 'fancy waffle' station or something. It was more run of the mill fare. My spouse loves corned beef hash and since the menu said they make it there... she ordered some. It wasn't on the buffet but upon request they will bring you items on the other parts of the menu. I've waited 15 years for the stars to align and go to the Greenbrier. The main dining room is supposed to be the best in the resort. I hoped for so long and hoped the reviews weren't true. Unfortunately they are. Service was outstanding, Food was absolute trash, Seriously. I'm not being a snob or exaggerating. It was bad. Wife's chicken pasta had a a few stringy pieces of chicken. My pork was as dry as a bone. Again service was outstanding, foot was not. They make you wear a jacket, but that is only 10% of fine dining. You have to have the food. Poor service. Turned around at the gate and told to park at the train station because we weren't guests--despite the hotel lot being mostly empty! Couldn't find our reservation once we got in. When I asked where the washroom was, I was asked if I was a guest. I was a wearing the required jacket and tie and stepping away from my table in the main dining room. For both the entree and the main course, the men were served before the ladies. As for the food, I had to saw my crispy pork belly for quite a while to get off a piece to chew on for a while. At least the lamb was tender. And the other entrees were pretty good. Don't order the crêpes suzette! The table side service consisted of one of the servers reheating something round, that had the thickness and texture of lasagne noodles in some butter and pouring over some triple sec. As a finale, she clattered the pan in the floor as she pulled the cart away. Paid the bill of $560 for the four of us. (Just one drink each). and vowed not to return! read more

Wow just wow!! This food was simply incredible. I could not get enough!!! Started out with a Caesar salad. It was not chopped which added to the deliciousness. As my entree I ordered the halibut and I was blown away!! Best halibut EVER! Loved how the sides complimented the fish. There was a debate amongst the table which was better, the halibut or the pork chops and they were both so good we couldn't come to a conclusion. The filet was beautifully cooked. The peach dessert was fabulous. The wine was great bf the service was amazing. Not one complaint about this meal!! I wish I could eat here everyday! read more

This was considered the best restaurant in the hotel which requires men to wear suit and tie to get in. I had the loin of lamb for entree which is pretty tasty, the carrot soup tho is super salty, we have two orders on our table both couldn't finish because the level of salt is unbearable. We told the waitress to let the chef know but didn't get any feedback I guess they don't care much. The service here is a bit better than other places which is faster but still not good. The waitress couldn't wait to take the glasses that we are not using away saying "so I have less glasses to wash" and she serves food on the right side on some seats and most from the right side but inconsistent. For a black tie attire place, I'm expecting high standard service as they requires the attire from the guests. read more

I think I prefer having breakfast here over dinner and this morning's experience reinforced that thought. Dining with a friend and my wife, we had a wonderful experience and meal. Service was spot on as always. While waiting on our food to be prepared, there was plenty to check-out in this beautiful room. I love all the chandeliers and trying to identify the flowers in all the fabrics. My usual pick of French toast was nicely done with fresh berries. The bacon was a little more cooked than I would have preferred. Maybe next time, I'll request floppy bacon and I suspect it will not be a problem. My wife also stuck with a favorite, eggs Benedict, that came out looking like two eyes with a big smile. She thoroughly enjoyed her meal. Our friend's eggs in a basket was also a winner. Had an amazing dinner at the main dining room of the Greenbrier. We started off with a mixed green & beet salad and Maryland-style crab cake. As an entree, hubby ordered Lamb three way which he adored. I got the Seabass with autumn vegetables. We were so thrilled because hubby's dessert the night before was so spectacular was also on the dessert menu here!! This time I ordered it and it was every bit as magnificent as the Grand Marnier Souffle with creme anglais the night before. Hubby opted for the Citrus Fanancier dessert - hazelnut cake, lemon curd and Grand Marnier Ice cream! Highly recommend. Such beautiful surroundings. Other than the nostalgic grandness of the décor at the hotel, the breakfast buffet in the Main Dining Room was the highlight of my stay at The Greenbrier. At $29 for all-you-can-eat (before fees, automatic gratuity, and taxes), it is the most reasonably priced meal available on the property, and provides an enormous variety of very high quality dishes that will keep you full and satisfied until dinner. The service in the Main Dining Room was also the best that we received anywhere in the hotel. Some of the servers a quite young, possibly high school and college students, but they are friendly, efficient, and attentive. One morning we were waited on by a young woman visiting the U.S. for a year from Hungary to travel and gain work experience. She was lovely, and always made sure our coffee and juices were topped up without us needing to ask. The Main Dining Room is elegant and vast, spanning an entire wing off the main entrance and boasting green stone pillars and crystal chandeliers as the focal point. In the mornings the enormous windows allow the light to flood in while you enjoy your breakfast. Reservations are not required, but may be recommended during busy times. A la carte breakfast options are available, but you are cheating yourself if you don't spend the extra few dollars for the buffet. It has just about anything you could desire. In the back are the cold stations: a variety of fresh fruits, yogurt and granola, lox and capers, fresh flavored cream cheeses and butters, and sliced breads and bagels. There is an omelette station where a chef cooks perfectly sized omelettes with a selection of meats and vegetables to order. The main section of the buffet holds classic and season hot items: scrambled eggs (both plain and country style with cheese and onions), sausage patties and links, bacon, ham, roasted potatoes, biscuits, quiche, gravy, grits, and more. Finally there are your sweet items including muffins, danish, scones, cinnamon rolls, pancakes, French toast, and waffles. Everything that I tried from the buffet was excellent, and it was a little bit different each morning. If I return to The Greenbrier, I will certainly splurge for the buffet again. read more

I'm torn awarding stars on this one. Hubby and I spent two nights at The Greenbrier, and we had dinner here one night and breakfast one morning. Is it beautiful? Yes, the entire Greenbrier is beautiful in the most grand way imaginable, and the restaurant is impressive. If all you want to do is see it, there are no walls on two sides, so if you are visiting and just want to walk thru and take some photos, you could do that. Dinner with two salads, two entrees, two iced teas (no alcohol at dinner) and two desserts was around $220... so be prepared. Our ceasar salads were very nice, and I had an excellent Salmon, ever-s-slightly crisp on the outside but tender inside... served with an excellent Bernaise sauce topped with lobster and plated with asparagus over rice. Very well done. Hubby had the filet, again exceptionally good... one of the better steaks "like butter" he shared anywhere... including the steakhouse on property. I enjoyed a good, but not as great as the entree, bread pudding... and hubby had a chocolate souffle that was very nice. For breakfast the next morning, we ordered off the menu because we had eaten everything I just described at 9 PM the night before. I had a really nice waffle topped with fruit and whipped cream sided by bacon, and hubby had pancakes with peaches and sided with the bacon but he also ordered the artisan sausage just to see how it was. I personally liked the bacon better, the sausage was very plump and clearly hand done, just not a flavor I was wowed about. Each of us had coffee with breakfast, and our tab was around $44 I believe. Of note... yes, the Greenbrier automatically applies a 20% gratuity on your bill. Our service was good throughout, but I just don't like this in principle. I also wonder how many guests don't notice and fill in an additional tip. The Greenbrier also adds a 6% Historic Preservation Fee as well on your tab. Their property is lovely and the grounds are amazing... but in my opinion when you are paying their rates for room nights and meals... that should be more than enough to not have so many fees added on "nickle and diming you" as my Dad used to say. Were both meals good? Yes, I would say so. Was this dinner now the proud honoree to be the most expensive meal we have ever had in one night? Yes, at $220 it is. Would I say this was in turn the best meal we've ever eaten out? No, I'd have to say not. But you are paying for the ambiance and being there, I understand. I'm glad we went, and I'm glad we had a meal there, but we won't be in a hurry to return. So thus back to my yelp rating scale... A-OK? Well, clearly it was better than that. But to say I'm a fan? That's a little strong. So if I could, I'd say 3.5 stars... but I'm going to down to the 3 because of all the fees. read more

I really want to give The Main Dining Room five stars. It's held high in the memories of my older relatives. But I just can't. Here's why: Granted, we only enjoyed breakfast. The food was quite good and deserving of at least four stars. It was the service that dips to three. We consistently felt rushed, as though the next table of guests was more appetizing to our waitresses than were we. Also, I found the dress code confounding. One morning, I was turned away for wearing a nice pair of jeans and a buttoned-up shirt. Rightfully so, the "no denim" rule was clearly outlined and I just didn't read carefully enough. What's confounding, however, is that a group of three waltzed in behind me wearing extraordinarily casual clothes (the first sported a pair of cutoff camouflaged shorts, the second workout attire, and the third a ripped t-shirt). While I don't want to come across as a bitter snob, I'd encourage management to create a more consistent policy. In any event, the food is delightful and I'd recommend you carefully read -- and abide by -- the dress code. read more

I've been here once for dinner and twice for their breakfast. I would give the dinner a 3 and the breakfast a 5--it's quite yummy and lovely. Like other reviewers have said, definitely check out the breakfast buffet and pass on the main meal. Plus, the natural sunlight is so beautiful in the mornings. Definitely ask to sit to the left! Side story: while having breakfast one morning, I said to my boyfriend how I wished they had plain cream cheese (I had only seen strawberry and chives out). Within a minute or so, a waiter swooped by with my own plain cream cheese plate. Still have no idea how he heard me! But very nice just the same. read more

Very disappointing--food and service. I ordered a Caesar salad that was parmesan and lettuce, they forgot the dressing. I sent that back and waited 10 minutes and got charged for it (of course). Next was a crab cake that was straight out of the can. I realize it's WV and you don't go there for the seafood. That said I've had better crab cakes in WI. And lets face it, they are a state away from the Chesapeake. If they cared, which they don't, they would make a proper crab cake. This one was about twice the size of an Oreo for $20. The entrée was a rabbit ragout. There was at most 0.25 ounces of meat in this dish. Literally 2 - 3 tiny shreds of meat. I effectively paid $40 for a well seasoned bowl of noodles. Then the service. Water never refilled, never an inquiry into how the food was at any point. But they did add the 20% gratuity which means that wait staff have little incentive to care coupled with the fact they have a captive audience at the resort. Finally the pretense with the dress code of jacket and tie.That's fine but you better back it up with service and food worthy of it at these prices. As it was, I should have been allowed to eat my meal in bath slippers, sweats and a stained T-shirt. Avoid. read more
