I usually love this place. For the last 7-8 years I have ordered a majority of our celebratory cakes from here. When they were hosting parties for kids back in the day we had them here as well. If something weren't right, they would always correct it and I would leave a happy camper. Today I stopped by to price a unicorn cake for my soon to be 12 year old. It was 75, but she's not having a party so I don't mind paying the cost. Today is Wednesday and I need the cake for Sunday. Well the woman working told me no. She said they were full and could not make the cake. What the what? I have never had this happen there in all my years of being a customer. The Makery is soooo friendly, we went in a for a tasting, and while we were there, all of these gorgeous and beautiful cakes were coming out of the kitchen and being prepared to be delivered. Being able to immediately see cakes that were exactly what I was looking for was wonderful, and put me at ease for our wedding day. The owner sat down and helped us design our cake, she was really friendly, drew everything out while we were talking and made the process super quick. About a week later we received a handwritten custom note thanking us for choosing them, with information specific to our cake and meeting, which to me, was just above and beyond customer service. They offer free tasting on Sunday's, and all of the cake is amazing. In fact I ended up choosing 8 different flavors of cupcakes for my wedding Try the carrot cake. We used The Makery for our wedding, and the cake was BEAUTIFUL, tasty, and affordable. Our custom cake design turned out perfectly, and we were able to get a wide variety of flavors for a cake to serve 80 people. They also include a "sweetheart" small cake for the bride and groom the night of the wedding (if you are too busy/having too much fun and forget to eat cake!) AND they also re-make a small cake for your anniversary, so you don't have to freeze the top of the cake. To top it all off, we forgot to order our anniversary cake from them, and I called it in the day of...kind of bummed that I forgot and we would have to eat the cake a few days late, and they called me a few hours later to tell me they had prepared the cake that day so we could enjoy it on our anniversary. I couldn't believe how small the cupcakes were (I ordered regular size) and they barely had any frosting on them. They tasted ok but very overpriced for what you get. I bought 8 Mamapedia (like Groupon) gift certificates to The Makery to use for my kids and some of their friends for my daughters Birthday. The certificates were for a Jr Pastry Chef class. I booked the class and they assured me over the phone I could use the certificates and everything was set. We arrived and they gave me a hard time about using them, and tried to tell me I would have to pay $250 extra because the Jr Chef Pastry class we booked for the 8 kids was more expensive than a regular class. I told them I had already talked to someone on the phone, and they told me I could use the coupon for this specific class, even though it was a little more. They refused to hold the whole class for the kids, and offered I could A) not use the coupons and pay $500 for the birthday party B) use the coupons and pay $250 for the party or C) use the coupons and have a one hour party with only decorating cupcakes. UGH! This is happening while all the parents are arriving with kids and presents etc dropping them off. We opted for the one hour party. It was fun for the kids, but the staff kept disappearing even though there was 4 of them working at the time in this little place. I kept having to actually go in their back workroom and ask them what we were supposed to do next. I was so frustrated and will never come back here or recommend them to anyone. The only plus is that they do try to help with allergies, and they provided Gluten Free cupcakes for the kids allergic to wheat. read more

We recently ordered a vegan wedding cake through The Makery Cake Company. Our daughter couldn't have been more pleased! At our initial consultation, Dez worked with us to make the shape, cake flavors and fondant for the perfect end product. She even replicated the lace of the wedding dress in the cake flowers. It's 97 degrees out in mid-July. The kids are tired of swimming and I don't want another movie or the make-your-own-ceramic doorstop. What to do, what to do? I remembered this place from a friend's facebook pix and we LOVED it. Kind of far away from central Denver at County Line, but worth the drive if you're not very handy with one of those frosting tip things. . . My 10 year old daughter had a ball (so did I) and they were very nice. We got a very small chocolate layer and she decorated it with 3 different colors of frosting ($2.50 each) so we left with fun memories and a great tasting cake for $29.00. There are cheaper activities, but this was fun. I'd have fun with my girlfriends too, if they served wine. read more

I had a cake made to celebrate my sons black belt exam. The owner (I think) and I discussed the decorations. She drew it out on the order. I sent her a picture of a martial artist that we were copying to put on top of the cake. I had the cake covered in white fondant, she talked me out of doing "Congratulations" and my sons name in fondant letters because she said is is very hard work. The piped icing letters would be great and you would not be able to tell much difference. Upon picking up the cake, I was so disappointed. The design we drew out together was not followed. The piped "Congratulations" and my son's name were skinny and out of proportion to the rest of the decorations. I mentioned something to the person who was working the front when we picked up the cake. He said the decorations were pretty set on the cake and there is was nothing they could do. The cake looks like it was ordered from King Soopers for $15.00. Like it was made by a child attending a cake decorating class. I would not be so upset if the cake was a reasonable price, but a 10" round cake covered in fondant set me back $138.00 I will not be going back. I am feeling so ripped off. read more

After much searching for a wedding cake designer we checked out the Makery which also happened to be the furthest place from our venue, and we both wish we went there first. The service was very friendly, professional, and it was a very smooth consultation and process to go through. Not only did our price include a complimentary sweetheart cake for after the ceremony but also a free anniversary cake. As far as the cake was concerned it was fresh, very clean looking, and the designed was exactly how we wanted. The day of delivery went very smooth, and this was a great place to do business with. I was referred to The Makery after my niece went to an amazing birthday party where they all made darling sleep over cakes. My 4 year old niece brought her cake to a family dinner and not only was it so cute but delicious!!!! I had The Makery then help with my twins first birthday-- from start to finish it was such a fun and easy experience. They are so creative and patient-- never once when I was contemplating flavors or designs did I feel rushed, they all were just right in there throwing out ideas and suggestions. They made a custom football cupcake cake and then two smash cakes! Even the smash cakes had so much detail and were so yummy! Everyone at the party commented on how good the cupcakes were! I can't believe it's taken me this long to write about The Makery! I haven't had experience with them when it comes to formal cakes, but their portfolio sure is impressive! What I went for was a cupcake party! That's right, they let you decorate in their shop, and then they clean up the mess! If you have a lot of kids they can each get their own cupcake to decorate. If there are only a few kids you can get one cake and have them all pitch in. They have every kind of sprinkle and frosting and candle and decoration you can imagine. It's perfect. And the best part? Recently my boyfriend and I showed up for the Friday Night Date Night DIY cake decorating session. It was fun. The staff showed us amateurs different techniques for decorating the cake with the frosting tips. You buy different colors of frosting already prepared for you in a bag for $2.75 each. My one complaint is one of the frostings we chose was old and we hard time decorating with it. We told a staff member and she gladly made new frosting for us. The cake was good, nothing more. When our dessert bar plans fell through 3 weeks before our wedding, The Makery Cake Company got us in for a tasting right away. We went with an 8" "cutting" cake & sheet cake to serve. The cutting cake turned out so beautiful, exactly what I was picturing! And it was absolutely delicious!! We had so many compliments on how good the cake was. Up until my Wedding Day I was very happy with my Makery experience. The cake tasting was fun and delicious and the cakes where very affordable. My husband and I did not want a traditional bride and groom cake topper so we had gotten two action figures of Mulder and Sculley from the X-files. When we went in for our cake consultation we chose a pink champagne cake with Bavarian Cream filling and cream cheese frosting. We finalized and paid for our cake on that day and our cake consultant told us she would keep our action figures to affix them to a board and prepare them for our cake. They later sent me a card to thank me for my business and to tell me how much they liked my topper. About two weeks from my Wedding Desiree (the owner) called and confirmed my order- BOTH cake and CAKE TOPPER. Fast forward to my Wedding reception I walk in to find that my cake has NO TOPPER and that the topper is no where to be found. The cake itself was good but both my husband and I where very let down that one of our favorite details was missing. I called The Makery as soon as I woke up the next morning and I left a message stating what had happened and that I was very upset. When Desiree called me back she was mildly apologetic but blamed me for not calling her when I noticed the topper wasn't there. I didn't see my cake until I walked into my reception and I didn't think to sacrifice one of my guests to phone tag. She also told me that it is in their contract that they do not keep cake toppers. However my consultant asked to hold it so it could be prepared for the cake. When I told Desiree this she told me my consultant no longer worked there. I fail to see why staff turn over should be an excuse for filling orders incompletely. Desiree gave me a $50 refund and a $100 store credit along with a handwritten note that she drove to my house with my action figures. I was not home when she did this. And although this was a nice enough gesture it won't fix my wedding pictures or memories of my cake and it doesn't make up for her blaming me for her forgetting the cake topper. I have no intention of using the store credit of doing business with The Makery again. Although they make awesome cakes their customer service and professionalism leaves much to be desired. read more

For some reason finding a cake was the hardest part of my wedding planning. I tried a couple of places and really didn't like the cake (who knew that was possible). I also found a lot places I wanted to try were already booked on my date, even 4-5 months in advance. Or, the one I disliked the most, some places made me feel my design options were very limited because I did not want fondant, we just don't like it! But then I found The Makery. My dad and I went for a tasting and were very impressed. Neither of us cares for chocolate cake but we both agreed that the chocolate cake at The Makery was amazingly tasty. My dad fell in love with the white chocolate cream cheese frosting and it be came a requirement. For anyone debating, it is definitely worth the extra money! When it came time to discuss our details we only had a vague idea of what we wanted, but we gave that to them as well as our color swatches and away we went. They did not limit our design based on our not wanting fondant. It was delivered on time, set up and ready in no time at all, and they even gave us a cake to take with us to the hotel that night. The Makery was absolutely fantastic! We tried all their flavors at a tasting about 9-10 months before our wedding and wanted to order every flavor. We ended up getting the red velvet with cream cheese frosting and raspberry filling. It was our favorite but you really can't go wrong. We got compliments, people were taking home leftovers in tupperware, and our guests were asking for their number before we even left on the honeymoon.
