If you are looking for fresh produce & meats, then this is not the place for you. However, if you are looking for some Indian spices, frozen foods, Indian snacks, then come head on over! The place is small like all the other reviews stated. I can vouch for the friendliness of the owners. There was a couple looking for a specific type of candy, and they asked for the owner's help. The owner tried to find it for them, but they must not have had it in stock. The owner opened a package of similar type of candy and let them try it! They loved it and purchased it. The couple even offered to buy the package that they opened for them, but the owner said no and got them a new package! That's great customer service! Let's talk about what The Masala Company has to offer in terms of products. This is the go to place for frozen meals. I know, frozen meals are terrible for you. But, you haven't tried the ones that are offered here made from Deep Foods. I looked at the ingredients on the frozen meals, and there are no preservatives or artificial flavors! The list of ingredients is short! In addition, the sodium level wasn't above and beyond! The meals I bought had less than 600mg of sodium. From that you can tell the frozen meals are all natural without any preservatives! I was so surprised! I am obsessed with the vegetarian frozen meals! Baingan Bharta (roasted eggplant, tomatoes, & onions) is addicting! Great way to eat your veggies!!! As you can see from my receipt, the prices are pretty reasonable too! Plus, you can go on their website and type in the UPC code for the recipe on how to make that frozen meal you just purchased and loved! How cool is that?! I've passed by this place over the years and started going in earlier this year when I needed spices for Indian dishes. The selection of goods, samosas, chutney, biscuits and chai, is great and I still go back every few weeks. The retail storefront for Indian food leader Deep Foods is located in the old Pathmark/Best Buys Plaza, just a few blocks from their corporate offices. The Masala Co. shopping experience is decidedly more sanitized (and Westernized) than your typical Indian market, although they are nicely stocked with everything Indian but produce. Selections aren't robust as the big Indian markets in Edison, but the prices are much better. There appears to be more of an orientation toward the foods and ingredients of Southern India, but all regional cuisines are represented well. There is an entire wall of freezer cases containing prepared foods from Deep and their affiliated companies, and they're good. The aisles are well-lit, spacious and neatly-swept. So let me get this straight - Deep Foods (which is not a shallow company in the least, rim shot) has been based out of Union for HOW long without a retail storefront? Yikes. Fortunately, this grievous oversight is now corrected. The Masala Company just opened in a vacant store here in this big-ass series of strip malls next to Best Buy on 22. If you're a grizzled veteran of the awesome secret that is the Indian grocery - as in fresh cilantro for 99 cents a pound and other ridiculously low prices for great quality fresh produce - you may be a bit turned off. This is not a true Indian grocery, there is no produce. But that's okay, because they have everything else. You will never, EVER buy McCormick or whatever crap spices are in grocery stores again for $4.99 to get two ounces or some awful amount again, not when you can pay $2.00 and get damn near a half pound of whatever basic or exotic spice you might need. Pepper, chili powder, curry powder, fenugreek, everything. Also, they do carry all the lentil types and styles you'll need. This store is a real godsend - get a few pounds of lentils, spices, and Google up slow cooker lentil curry recipes and you will eat like a Raj for pennies over the winter. They also have freezer cases for Deep foods frozen products, everything from naan and roti breads to frozen meals to samosa. There's teas, dry goods, all the stuff you'll ever need. They deserve your business if for no other reason than spices alone. Go and get your masala on! read more

Went to The Masala Co. after not being able to find Indian spices anywhere near my neighborhood, and I have to say the 35 minute drive was well worth it. This is a small shop but the selection, service and prices are excellent; they had everything we needed and more. The gentleman behind the counter was very pleasant and extremely helpful and even found everything we were looking for for us. We definitely recommend The Masala Co. and will only shop here from now on for all of our Indian cooking needs. read more

I love this store. The price and variety is amazing and the store's real clean/helpful. This store is my go to store over the ones in Edison. It has a lot of variety in a small footprint with space to move around. Also, it's not dirty. Best of all, it's affordable. My only wish is they would also sell vegetables, but it's not a Deep product, so understandably its not part of their showcase. read more

I needed some very specific ingredients for a cookbook I'm testing and was going to wander into Whole Foods until a friend suggested trying the Indian market. I walked out with - tamarind paste, rose water, cardamom, turmeric, arrowroot, black tea for $14! Not to mention, the place was impeccably clean and the owner was SO helpful and friendly. I can't compare it to other markets in terms of price or stock but this place was fantastic! They had such a huge assortment of flours, spices, chutneys and prepacked spices and flavorings, lots of sweets, a big frozen selection and even a small bath/beauty area. I definitely plan on coming back when I'm not so limited on time and I want to pick up a bunch of things to test. The Frozen food system here is off the hook!!! You can scan any barcode in the back and the computer generates a list of facts and recipes for you!! It's so cool!! It's always so clean there and the staff is super friendly and always willing to help!! Deep products is an all time fave and they have it all!! You can't go wrong shopping for food here!! This store is very clean, neatly organized, and affordable! I love trying all of the frozen foods, pre-made sauces, and snacks I could never find anywhere else. (Seriously though, I think I can pass some of these things are restaurant bought.) I've been coming here since they opened from way before Shoprite opened, which brought an influx of customers. Thus, less parking spots these days. I do wish they were open a little bit later too. read more

I found this place by accident, we were passing through the plaza. I am very happy to see this store, neat and clean compare to many Indian stores. The selection is limited but it has most of the products that we normally buy from Indian store. The reason I gave it a 4 stars is that it lacks fresh produce which is the main reason whey I go to Indian store. I will be shopping at this store when ever in this area but this will not replace my regular Indian grocery shopping experience. If you are not from Indian origin and looking to explore Indian spices, ready made food etc. this is a perfect place to shop as it gives enough choices without being overwhelmed. read more

Ditto of everyone else, plus I want to say that these Masala Burgers are INCREDIBLE! It's a box of 4 for $2.99 (cheaper than veggie burgers when they're on sale in supermarkets!) and they taste sort of like pakora but not spicy. I cut mine up and put it over a salad with cucumber salad (cukes, onion, sour cream, etc)... perfect meal. Or in a pita like you'd eat falafel (easier to make at home, especially for one). I never saw them in the stores in Iselin, so even though this store is much smaller than the others it's worth checking out because you might find something odd there. :-) read more

A pretty good Indian grocery as far as they go. They have a pretty small selection of actual grocery items. Mostly they stock frozen items, bulk spices and rice, and snacks from India. Didn't have a large selection of spices. They did take credit card though which is a plus. Don't come expecting a huge store but they have most of what you need. read more

Great store. I found everything I needed for a kicharee fast. Everything was reasonably priced.

Pleased to find Indian Grocery store around Milburn/Summit/Short Hills area. Must for anyone who interested in Indian food and spices.
