One of my favorite B&B's to date! Mercury Inn is in a super convenient location, walkable to the Portland Museum of Art and a bunch of bars/restaurants. The self check in was a super easy process and both Tim & Jake were very welcoming. I loved their breakfast each morning, everything was local and amazing, down to their coffee! They also did homemade muffins, cake and scones. The communal area is cute and convenient. We went during one of Portland's colder periods so the fireplace was very helpful and beautifully designed. There's a water dispenser, Keurig machine (with reusable kcups!), tea and snacks avail 24/7. We stayed in room 1 which was just enough space for two. No issues with getting warm water in the shower. The only thing to note is that room 1 is right outside the communal area on the 2nd floor. We had no trouble with noise overall but if people outside the room were talking or walking by, we heard very clearly. Definitely recommend and would love to come back when it's warmer! read more

This was my first time staying at an Inn so I wasnt sure what to expect..but the mercury inn was such a delight! As a solo female traveler i felt very safe in the area. I also loved the breakfast served every morning, it was always such a treat to see what was in the kitchen when i woke up! Staff and fellow travelers were all so friendly and the room decor was gorgeous. Cant recommend this place enough! Very, very clean when checking in as well. read more

This is really a 3.5 star review but since Yelp doesn't let you do halves, I'll round up. The Good: :: it's a local business! :: the 2 guys who run the place were super friendly :: location is terrific. close to lots of restaurants, coffeeshops, bars, main tourist destinations/areas, etc :: MODERN DECOR. this is huge. why? because most beds and breakfasts look like someone puked out grandma's linens, bedding, and curtains all over the place. LOVE the modern look and feel. :: very clean :: NOT HAUNTED. this is a huge bonus for me. seriously. :: cute snacks (like seaweed snacks) and beverages (like tea) available upstairs every day :: breakfast made every day from locally sourced ingredients as much as possible, like fresh yogurt, etc :: big spacious shared livingroom space upstairs :: bed was very comfy The Bad: :: the process to checkout wasn't super clear. that should have been on the room guide. :: parking is a bit of a clusterfuck. because there's such limited parking, they have to play parking jenga if your car is sandwiched between other cars in the driveway. :\ they only move cars around til i think midnight, so if you are needing your car for some reason outside of their availability window, you are actually SOL because you don't have access to the other cars' keys to move them so you can get out. :: main kitchen table isn't open 24-7. i'm not asking for there to be food 24-7, i'm asking for the main dining area to be open and available for use, like for drawing on, using a laptop or ipad on, etc. my room was the tiniest and had no desk, so it was kind of sucky not to have that table to use when i needed a table. :\ :: lighting in my room was super dim and inadequate. there were only 2 tiny bedside lights that were LED and didn't emit enough light for easy reading. mind you, lighting in the other rooms may have been fine but in this tiny room, it was definitely lacking. :( :: breakfast got monotonous after a while. there was never bacon or sausage, it was usually yogurt and some form of eggs like in quiche form :: there was a microwave for use but it was a tiny portable one The Ugly: :: none Would I go back? Probably so. Finding a cute, affordable, and modern bed and breakfast in a popular destination like Portland, Maine is a huge win. However, next time I think I'll try to book a bigger room and hopefully things will be a little bit better. This place is IN. read more

This is not your grandma's bed and breakfast. If you like some modern chic with your Victorian charm, then book yourself a stay at the Mercury Inn. It is located in the lovely Parkside neighborhood and only a stone's throw from an eclectic variety of Portland spots. Self check-in was easy peasy. Tim texted me well before the regular check-in time that our room was ready. We entered using the provided pass code and our key was waiting patiently for us. Parking in their driveway is an option, but it's not absolutely necessary. Street parking was ample and painless. We stayed in Room III on the second floor. While not the most spacious room, every inch of space was efficiently utilized and it had everything we needed, right down to a wine bottle opener. (The bathroom was plenty big though.) The mattress and bedding were blissfully comfy and a sloth's delight. The second floor is also home to the artfully furnished and decorated common room. It was great to pop in for a coffee or a snack, a guidebook, even a DVD or two. There is also a handy refrigerator tucked away by the rear emergency exit. Tim's locally sourced, buffet-style breakfasts were a real treat. We feasted on frittata, grits, roasted root veggies, hearty bread and jam, scones, muffins, and heavenly yogurt with maple syrup and granola. The cider was spectacular. Tim himself hung out in the dining area every morning and greeted everyone. He was a pleasure to chat with and had some great recommendations. (We unfortunately never got to meet Jake.) Mercury Inn is a standout in a city full of creative and ambitious ventures. They succeed at both providing a hospitable stay for guests and incorporating local vendors and sustainable practices into the overall experience. On top of all that, their prices are unbeatable, even during the on-season. It was the perfect home base for our Portland adventure. read more

Mr David and I recently checked in to Mercury Inn and were incredibly impressed with our experience. This is definitely not your typical "granny"-style B&B, Mercury Inn is definitely trying hard to cater to a younger, more hip crowd and I think they are definitely succeeding. One of the things I really liked about this place in general was that the front door stays locked at all times. This just makes me feel safer. So when you check-in, just ring the doorbell and you will be greeted by one of the innkeepers who will give you keys and tell you the passcode for the front door. The innkeepers are super hip, young, and cool and immediately make you feel welcome. We booked Room 7 which is described as the smallest room in the place. But it wasn't even close to small! The room was filled with natural light and very spacious. I think it is described as the smallest room because there is a decently sloped ceiling that requires you to bend over, but there isn't much need to go to that part of the room. I was SO impressed with the size of the bathroom! It was HUGE and again, filled with natural light. Breakfast each day was incredible and included so many options. Every morning included an oatmeal and granola option, a beautiful loaf of bread with various jelly/jam options and toaster oven, yogurt in mason jars, and two hot breakfast options. When we visited they were serving up some delicious frittatas and roasted potatoes and cheddar grits. And being from the south, I know good grits, and the grits were wonderful! I really appreciated that the innkeepers were in and out of the dining room during breakfast, asking guests what they did the day before and what there plans were for the upcoming days and offering suggestions. They were just really cool and interactive and did a great job. The parlor is one of the communal rooms and it's big and has so many options. There are maps of Portland and the area with suggestions to do. There are always snacks available (3 options) and a Keurig with coffee and tea. But the best offering in the parlor is the water cooler so you can fill up water bottles for the day. Seriously, this is a HUGE perk that was beyond appreciated. Parking is available in the driveway and there are rules surrounding the ability to park there, but there was so many free parking spots on the street just outside Mercury Inn that we didn't even bother with the driveway because it was just easier. Basically I just want to go back to Portland immediately and stay at Mercury Inn again because we loved it so much! read more

This review is long overdue since my gf and I visited last summer for my birthday, but it was so fantastic that we still talk about revisiting a year later! We stayed for a long weekend in August and I didn't know what to expect. The website is so clean and well designed so I had high hopes, but you never really know until you visit in person. We've stayed in a fair amount of B&B's but this one was just utterly unparalleled in quality and charm. The house is beautifully updated but still maintains the charm of a victorian. We stayed in Room IV with the king bed, it was super cute and included everything you could think of! The bathroom was not an en suite but you barely noticed since it was literally one giant step away from our room, not inconvenient at all. We arrived late Friday night, Tim emailed us directions for check in and parking so it was a breeze. The location is shockingly close to everything! State street is filled with beautiful houses and brownstones so it's a real joy to walk up/down. We barely drove while there, instead choosing to walk Portland and really get a nice feel for the city. (Uber is also alive and well there so it's ridiculously easy to get around.) The breakfast offered each day was consistently FANTASTIC (one word - "granola", eat it and weep with joy). Everything we ate was comparable to the many high-end coffee shops we saw downtown; really amazing quality of goods. We also had the pleasure of chatting with Tim over breakfast one morning. He was so down-to-earth friendly and gave us great tips for checking out the Oxbow brewery. I highly recommend the Mercury Inn to anyone and everyone visiting Portland, ME. Tim and Jacob's sustainability model is incredibly admirable and they are truly doing a fantastic job. We are huge fans and will definitely be back :) read more

My wife and I just spent two nights here last week and it was such a great experience, the inn is in a quieter area than downtown but still a convenient walk to all attractions. The owners are so welcoming and the building is so homey that we were describing "going back to the Inn" as "going home" while we were in Portland. The breakfast was delicious and we met so many great people at the breakfast table and got some great advice and traveling tips for Portland and other destinations. This place and the innkeepers are amazing and I would definitely stay here again if I am ever in Portland! I came here with 3 of my friends back in October and we stayed in the 2-bedroom suite. We had not planned on staying at a B&B, but after comparing against traditional hotels, it made more sense economically (about $280/night including tax) and location-wise to stay here. The things that I absolutely love about this place are: 1. The FRIENDLINESS of the innkeepers, Tim and Jake. They are there to greet you when you check in and at the breakfast to chat. If you need recommendations for restaurants or stuff to do near by, they are a fountain of knowledge. It's such a personal experience and a stark contrast from hotels, where you never get to know anyone. 2. The DECOR. It's like being a home decor magazine (definitely Domino worthy). After being here, I am seriously coveting their Eames chair, two-tiered lamp shades, antique glass buoy-filled coffee table, and antique WWII commissary table with swivel stools (yes, this is where you get to eat breakfast!). If you look around, there are little flowers and bigger arrangements tucked around the house ... they are really unique and local (no boring carnations here!). Everything from the key rings to the tea cups to the throw pillows are exquisite. 3. The HOMEMADE food. When we first arrived, we were shown the snack jars, filled with apple chips and sesame shortbread. Unabashedly, we all sampled some (and abashedly) we came back for seconds! There is also tea and coffee available 24/7. The breakfast was scrumptious, thoughtful, and unique. We had little cheesy breakfast egg muffins (adorable and delicious!), Greek yogurt with real maple syrup in little mason jars, homemade bread, local apple juice, etc. There was a lot of variety and even my friends who are usually picky about food or allergic to certain foods and plenty of yummy things to eat. Also, the breakfast table is communal so we chatted with some of the other guests, which was really unexpected but nice. A couple minor notes for improvement: 1. The front porch light is hard to see from the opposite side of the street (it is blocked by the Mercury Inn sign. 2. I'm super sensitive to smells and I really didn't like the smell of the local organic hand wash. read more

I must admit I feel a little duped about this B&B. While we met the one owner Tim and he was really nice and offered great dinner suggestions; the "breakfast" the next morning was sub par. I was excited to see that the food was sustainable and local but when we came down to breakfast and saw a continental style breakfast with muffins, toast, jam, yogurt, and mini (somewhat cold) frittatas, the excitement soon waned. Breakfast was delicious don't get me wrong but for $160 per night (we stayed in the smallest room) we expected a little more. When we came down to breakfast there wasn't many mini-frittatas left and while Tim did ask if we needed more my boyfriend and I thought we were the last people to eat breakfast so we told him we were ok. Another couple came to eat while we were there and Tim then asked them if they wanted an omelet! I was a little bummed we didn't get the same offer. Also even though the bathroom was big which was nice the shower curtain had a black ring of mold on the bottom.....definitely not worth $160. We ended up staying at a Best Western when we came back to Portland that was $116 per night and a lot nicer. read more

I stayed here for three nights when I was visiting my friends in Portland, ME last week. This place is very clean, cute, cozy, and environmentally-friendly. The inn keepers, Tim and Jake, are so nice and helpful. One of the highlights was their delicious breakfast prepared daily with local ingredients. The dining area on the first floor has a charm. I met friendly guests and enjoyed chatting with them while having breakfast. Check-in and check-out were just smooth and painless. The only thing missing was a full length mirror in the room since the bathroom is next door. Other than that, everything was just perfect. A wonderful little inn run with care by some great folks. Conveniently located only about 10-15 minute walk from the city center, and styled in more modern (but still cozy) decor vs some of the other really old-timey antique-looking inns in the area. The inn was neat and clean, and clearly a lot of thought and effort has gone into maintaining its simple charm. The owners were very gracious and eager to help with anything we needed. Several major pros of staying at the Mercury Inn in addition to the above: 1) Great food. A very nice spread of homemade breakfast options every morning, and snacks left out throughout the day. 2) Quiet / Private - though the inn was full during our stay, we always felt like it was serene and private. Many B&B's you tend to be right on top of your neighbors, but we always felt like we had the place to ourselves. These guys really hit it out of the park!! We loved staying here and will definitely stay here again. Jake and Tim were so kind, helping us navigate through a snow storm and upgrading our room for our anniversary. We stayed in the two bedroom suite upstairs, which was perfect and spacious. Their breakfast was to die for, especially Tim's yogurt and honey with homemade granola. They have both driveway parking and street parking and downtown is right around the corner. The prices were so reasonable, especially compared to the hotels downtown. I 100% recommend this if you are visiting Portland. read more

This is a great place to stay in Portland. You are close to everything and the house and furnishings are very modern and beautiful. My 10 day trip took me all along the coast of Maine and I stayed at various B&B's along the way. The Mercury Inn was one of my top 3. They served the most delicious yogurt during my stay as well. My fiance and I stayed here for one night and it was such a wonderful experience. I absolutely loved the vibe and decor of the place. The owner was really responsive and helpful, and the breakfast he prepared was really delicious and plentiful. Our room was just the right size and had a beautiful bathroom attached. We loved all of the small details in the room, and spent a lot of time in the lounge area reading and playing cards. It really felt like we were staying in someone's home. Easy access to central Portland. Parking on the street is tricky so parking in the driveway may be necessary (the owners need your keys in case they need to move car for another guest). I stayed at Mercury Inn last weekend and had a lovely experience. The Victorian house is tastefully updated with modern, colorful touches and a nautical theme. What a gem! This was our first time in Portland, and we loved it! There are many options of where to stay in Portland, but I highly recommend this place to anyone. Here, you get personable service and a farm to table breakfast every morning. It is clean, well-kept, and the decor is so cute! I loved waking up and walking downstairs to a fresh cup of coffee and a yummy breakfast. Tim and Jake were super accommodating and were so friendly. Although we stayed in one of the smaller rooms, we were barely ever there, so it didn't even matter. I also love the fact that this place is eco-friendly. This place is totally magical - vintage decor, a very hip color scheme, beautiful and sunny sitting and dining areas, etc. The owners are just ridiculously kind and attentive, the food is amazing, the bed sprawling and comfortable, and the location (proximal to our favorites - the bearded lady's jewel box, the cryptozoology museum, and the best used book store ever) is totally perfect. I felt immediately and sustainedly mega-relaxed since first arriving (and when returning after hitting the bars, finding totally killer chocolate chip cookies hanging out in the sitting area was a gratification one can't hope to find at just any hotel...). read more

The owners are both very hospitable and friendly, and the food was excellent.
