Hidden gem in a crowded union city!!! Plenty of seating with a nice friendly aesthetic and decorations. It's not a bar so very family friendly. I go to a lot of restaurants and this is one i believe deserves more attention. I have gone in a few times and the owner/ her son are always very happy and attentive but place is never busy. I have tried multiple options on the menu like burrito, shrimp tacos, and lunch special huarachas... and all had me come back for more! They are unique flavors and some sauces they use are not spicy but full of flavor. And some items like huarachas arent something i commonly order in other mexican restaurants but are amazing! They also have a little happy hour menu with 8$ frozen margaritas that tasted pretty good! 10/10 do recommend and hope other yelpers give them a try! read more

I had the pleasure of meeting Karen and Alejandro the owners of one of our new Mexican Restaurants @themictlan.nj . Let me start with this...Wow! The crunch on the Gordita! The flavor of the fresh tortilla is amazing! Deff something I haven't experienced before. The fact that it's not pre-cooked is what makes this gordita a must have. The sope was so good as well! It so packed and soft! Goodness! This was my first time having a sope and it's not on my list of things to get when going Mexican. All three items were delicious! Each and everyone of them made with fresh tortillas!! None of that refrigerated and cook when ready stuff, nah, we are slapping it now and cooking it now tortillas! The Taco, the Gordita and The Sope all amazing! But after much thought and going back and forth my top one was the Gordita! The freshness, the flavor and crunch of the tortilla is what I fell in love with! I 100% recommend you passing by this week and trying it out! Oh and you have to try the Avocado water! I just love exploring the little spots my town has to offer. I came here with my college friends and let me tell you something, this is definitely a hidden gem. The staff is super friendly and inviting, I personally felt like I had stepped into a family members home with the warm greeting we received upon entering. The drinks were great! We had passionfruit and like margaritas which were around 6 dollars a piece, very unheard of in this economy! As for the food when I tell you I just wanted to keep eating despite how stuffed I was! I enjoyed my torta de pollo (chicken sandwich) the fries were great and all my friends kept sticking their fingers into my plate and the tacos were just perfect. I'm very picky when it comes to my ramen and prefer it to be a little more subtle but this birria ramen was jam packed with flavors which made it so much more appetizing. I will definitely be coming back ! Also my friend forgot their credit card at the spot and they were closing soon and actually waited for us to get there so he could get it back, which was super kind. I came here yesterday with my girlfriend for breakfast. I was going to go to this Cuban cafeteria close by but I've been there before and wanted to give this place a chance. I thought the back dining room was nice and convinced my girlfriend to give this place a chance. We go in and sit down and loved the decorations and took pics of the place so we can give great reviews of the place in case we liked the food and service. Well the waitress was very nice but did not speak English. I don't speak Spanish very well but my girlfriend did. I wanted the $9.25 breakfast on the to go menu but I didn't want black beans but wanted the refried beans. My girlfriend says the black beans are refried beans . I told her to ask the waitress to make sure and she did and waitress said yes. We also thought we were clear that we wanted what was on the to go breakfast menu but for dining in. Maybe there was confusion but we were charged their brunch breakfast prices from their menu for the huevos rancheros when we wanted the breakfast on the to-go menu. So be sure to point to it on the to-go menu if you don't speak Spanish well. Plus charged $3.50 for each coffee but on the menu it says $3 but on the receipt it says Cafe $0.00 but $7 for L, it said on the bill. We didn't order a large coffee. I wanted to bring up the prices we were charged because I felt misled but I don't speak Spanish well enough and my girlfriend didn't want to translate. The waitress was very nice and did a good job serving so I'll give the benefit of the doubt she somehow didn't understand but I didn't like that. I really hope it was that and not trying to upsell without asking. The coffee was excellent and the food was good but could have been so much better if the food was hot, the food wasn't hot at all, more luke warm like it had been sitting there for awhile unfortunately. Which I don't get because we were the only ones eating in the restaurant the entire time we were there. The fries had barely any flavor. Maybe adding salt by the cook would have helped. I was hoping for better. Maybe I'll give them another chance but we'll see. It sucks because I really wanted to like it and bring friends and family. Maybe lunch or dinner is better than breakfast because they do have a great google score. We were the only ones in the dining room during breakfast so maybe my experience explains why it isn't busy for breakfast. I give this place a 3.3 rating for breakfast. read more

It is on the counter to the right upon entry. Ahhh, Piedra del Sol is gone. I loved that place. Mictlan is in the former location and is beautifully decorated. It is gorgeous inside. The tacos were OK, just grilled meat in the tortillas w cilantro/cebolla, no salsas or anything. Those were the best things. The guacamole tasted like plain avocado with tomato and cilantro alone, salt free. The garlic shrimp was undercooked and raw, while the shrimp coctel came in a red water with about a tsp of Pico de gallo and the ketchup settled to the bottom of the cup on the lower layer of shrimp, no avocado, so it was like squeezed ketchup below, red tinged water up top with plain small baby shrimp, and... yeah. Did not even venture to try it given the raw garlic shrimp and how it looked. The tacos were fine, but I hope I am alone in my experience. I've never seen or tasted anything like I did here and was alarmed because I saw the glowing review below. Maybe just stay away from shrimp/seafood and everything else is fine? I loved the former restaurant and was ***so*** thrilled to try this new one, but based on my experience, sadly it was a huge miss that night. I'm sincerely sorry, but for $85 and all that I ordered, the best things were the "OK" tacos, and rice/beans and the agua de Jamaica. For almost $100 I couldn't eat my appetizers, or my dinner, just packed it up tp go bc I didn't want to say anything to hurt anyone's feelings and just left. I love aguas frescas but I've never tried agua de aguacate before it translates to avocado water which I know sounds weird but oh my God it is so delicious. I had their Argentinian steak tacos during the World Cup final and let me tell you....the seasoning and flavor on those tacos were like out of a heavenly cookbook! The steak gods were doing cartwheels in my tummy. I still dream about them over a month after having them. Avocado water is bomb...never new it was a thing until these guys brought it around. The dessert chimichangas are out of this world...THAT CRUNCH is the highest high! I would love to see them develop additional flavors and see how they turn out. They also have friendly staff that greet and serve you with kindness and respect. You never feel rushed. The restaurant is kept clean and the Photo Booth/photo op wall is perfect for anyone who loves to capture the moment and snap away (like me! Lol) I particularly enjoy that they are always trying to incorporate fun new events to the restaurant, like trivia night or fight night viewings.
