Sandwich and tamales menu November 2024
Maggie L.

A fun place to get grab some food (sandwiches, tamales, pastries, etc.) and play some board games. The barista was super friendly, and made me a pumpkin spice chai with homemade pumpkin syrup (I can definitely taste the pumpkin, bur I didn't love it!) And their pastries is from Macrina. I was told this place gets super busy after school is out.

As per usual I was seeking a place near my last client to complete my charting and grab a beverage. I located this cafe and had no idea what I was in for. I'd never heard of a game cafe. I hesitated for a moment, but am so glad to have entered. This cafe was amazing! The person at the counter made a great drink and recommended a good bite to eat. They were personable and everyone seemed to enjoy spending time going up to them and chatting them up. People were at tables playing D&D type games, there was a group in a private room. There was a group of high school kids, and adult group too. Noise level was surprisingly reasonable and I got lots of work done. I wish I had had the time to look around at the games they were selling because there were tons of new and used games for sale.

Looks like a great place to socialize and play all variety of games. We stopped by for coffee and a sandwich. We didn't expect the $9 Cuban sandwich to be small, prepackaged and microwaved. Possibly everything is prepackaged. Friendly service but wouldn't plan to have food here again. Gave it 4* because it's good to support small businesses.

The barista was super nice and helpful. Cute place that initially looks like it was a former gas station but converted to a cafe. Very cool backdrop with all types of board games displayed. Food and drinks were fairly affordable. Coffee beverage items costs around $3.50-$5.00 a cup and breakfast sandwiches about $6-$8. Parking lot available and "tenant parking" is allowed for customers, per the barista we asked. Would definitely come back if I needed a quick coffee break from home.

I thought someone should create a game about covid and I looked over.

Terrible coffee. Tip: don't get a Vietnamese coffee. It's basically a cup of milk. Can't even taste the coffee

Luke warm coffee, stale pastries and rude girl with blonde hair behind counter. She should not be working in customer service.

They are willing to make your bevvy dreams a reality. In retrospect, some of the flavor combinations I've suggested are nightmares. But, I am a Goblin. The interior has themed rooms which are kept clean by Seattle and Goblin standards, but would be considered fairly dirty anywhere in Japan. It can get busy on the weekends, but this Goblin knows what it's like to be slammed, so I wait patiently and be respectful. It's nice to see an unpretentious flavor forward cafe run by young women doing so well. Their Hazelnut lattes don't lack flavor and taste like you "don't get it". Their coffee tastes like you were finally invited to the dance. While the market has decided that a Goblin will pay at least $8 for a coffee now, I'll fight back my Goblin tears and say "WORTH IT, WORTH IT, YOU ARE WORTH IT!". I took 1 star off because no place is perfect. I'd also like to see patrons of West Seattle businesses do more as a community to keep these spaces clean and tidy.

There weren't any other customers inside and we were greeted with an empty display case in the front. While barren, the owner, a gruff* French gentlemen, confirmed that he still had choux pastry left with a choice of either vanilla, coconut, pistachio, or hazelnut. We decided to go with the pistachio, which he assembled fresh for us, first by piping pistachio cream inside the choux shell, then dipping in melted chocolate and sprinkling pistachio on top. Pistachio Choux ($6) - The choux is excellent, baked until deliciously crisp on the exterior while the inside remains soft, eggy, and tender. Since it's fresh filled and we ate it right afterwards, the cream never migrated to saturate the crust - I suspect people with issues with mushiness probably let the cream puff sit too long before consuming. The cream, which is piped to the brim, pushes out against the delicate shell, causing each bite to almost squirt out a bit of the luscious, silky whipped custard. The cream coats the lips and mouth with a layer of fat. It's not too sweet and has a light nutty pistachio flavor. The melted chocolate the top is dipped into glues on all of the pistachio dip. The chocolate is slightly bitter, yet sweet, so it helps cut through some of the rich silkiness of the cream. The pistachios on top act like a crumble, perhaps pulverized and melded with butter to create a very rich yet pistachio forward mix. It's strongly flavored, and the chocolate creates such a strong cement that none of the nuts detach while eating. (5/5) Panterelli was a huge surprise as it wasn't even on our radar until we walked past the shop randomly while exploring the Farmers Market. It's a definite revisit in the future! *The owner isn't nearly as welcoming as a typical American small business owner, but is certainly friendly and eager to chat. I also love his attitude - looks aren't that important; it's the taste the reigns supreme!

I saw this and repeated that we were taking our pie "for here" because it was a little loud for the staff to hear us, and maybe they didn't catch the initial request? Instead of slicing us a fresh cut from the pie at that point, they then scooped out our pies from the plastic "to-go" containers and put them on plates. I was off-put by that, but I always worry people will throw away food at that point and I'm not about that, so, I didn't make a fuss even though I thought it was not how you should present a slice of pie, when you state you will slice any pie. Later, I think it was an owner or manager... I saw THEM fresh-slice a different customer's slice of pie and put it on a plate. Maybe there's a disconnect in the staff training, or expectations? Why offer customers a pre-packaged slice then scoop it out of the container sacrificing presentation when they are dine-in? The pie itself was delicious as usual (thank you), but the service made me feel inequitable because it didn't make sense and someone else got a different level or kind of service. If you are trying to move product from a pie that had already been sliced and packaged, you could offer that at a discount. Especially if it's "Day Old". That's how old-school bakeries do it.

Nice filling and great crust. The place is small, and very little in the way of seating, but we were able to snag a couple of spots. Service was...meh. We'd come in mid-afternoon, and they'd been slammed earlier with a very heavy lunch rush. This meant most of the savory pies were gone. When all of the pies we'd enquired about were out, we'd decided to head out and try another place. As we were leaving I noticed a sign promoting a couple of other pies, namely the Chicken Pot and Shepherd's. They had a few of those cooking in the oven, as it turns out, to be ready in 10. Why were these not suggested, when the server knew what we were looking for, I dont really understand. So, we ordered 2 Chicken Pot pies, waited the 10 minutes for them to cook, only to find out when they were done, there was really only 1 Chicken Pot Pie. Why didn't they know this 10 mins before? Fortunately my mom was accommodating and was happy enough to have the Shepherd's instead. Happy enough with what we bought and ate. The pies are tasty. Not very happy with the service.
