I went to The Mitre for Saturday brunch with the older sibling, to try an English breakfast. At The Mitre this means eggs, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, tomatoes, black pudding and toast. This is a pretty simple meal, so it is hard to mess up and it can be prepared quickly. The meal tasted good, fresh produce, quality meats and competent preparation. The problem was how long it took them to prepare the meal, it took almost one hour from when we placed our order before the food finally arrived on the table. Even the coffee and orange juice took more than 15 minutes to arrive, I blame the sibling and his order of fresh squeezed orange juice.
I don't usually bitch about service, I think the food is much more important - this is why I still eat at Five Guys etc. The Mitre is interesting because it isn't clear why it took so long. The meal is simple to prepare, any competent cook could do it in less than 15 minutes. The Mitre was not busy, there were six tables in use, only two of which were occupied when we arrived. As we waited for our food, and commented about English customer service, we noticed that no one else was eating. It appeared that they had not yet been served, rather than merely waiting for their cheques. The Mitre was not understaffed, there were 6 - 8 visible employees, including the manager/owner but not the kitchen staff.
The manager/owner was an interesting character, and the impetus behind this review. We entered the pub on the heels of a couple with two small children, and overhead the manager/owner tell them "... you need to be finished by 1:15 or 1:30". While West Indians are known for bad service, I have yet to go to a restaurant where customers were given a time limit. The couple did not seem fazed, so I assume this may be part of The Mitre's "charm". After seating them, the manager returned to the counter and his seating chart, I assume he was updating it. For the entire time we were there, this guy stood at the bar close to the door, working on a seating chart. The sheet looked like a seating chart, but he seemed angry - too angry for someone looking at a seating chart in a empty restaurant. The Mitre has a least twenty tables, seating people was never an issue, but the dude kept studying the chart. Not figuring out why it took so long to get people their food, nope studying the chart for an empty restaurant.
In short, service was poor but the food was good. read more
