One of the more well known spot on St. Mary's, The Mix is a nice blend of everything other bars in the area have to offer. There's a space for live music, a few pool tables (if you're too lazy to go next door to Joey's), and a small area outside to escape or enjoy a smoke. As a regular patron and musician, I would have to say it's one of the more friendly bars on the strip. However, it can get cramped inside as the tables don't allow for much standing/dancing room. Outside is a bit too small when it gets crowded and it's impossible to escape the cigarette smoke if you are bothered by that. Inside, there's no stage and a very small area for the bands which can be problematic when drinks are spilled or feet start moving. Aside from that, there's a good collection of drinks to choose from and some great bands to check out on the right night. Why not give it a try on your next bar crawl? read more

I love this favorite neighborhood bar. Great selection of liquor and beer with a laid back and fun atmosphere.

Usually have great service here but the bartender tonight was super rude. Let him know I was dd so I'd be drinking water and he acted like it was a crime to give me water. My friend tried to open a tab twice and the bartender kept insisting he hadn't asked to keep it open. When I asked for a water refill he put the glass back down in front of me so hard water splashed out and straw fell out. He ignored it. This might sound petty but the bartenders on the strip are usually so friendly and down to earth that his attitude was a definite deterrent to us returning. read more

Not a bad place, just a place I would not voluntarily go back to. It may not be my scene, but the "live band" was awful on Saturday night. It's like an emo/indie connotation. The women's restrooms are small and they have two doors that close in the middle... with no lock!!!! Imagine trying to do your business and then have to hold BOTH doors while squatting on the toilet, while some chick is washing her hands intoxicated, leaning up against those doors. Rudest staff I've ever encountered. A bouncer snatched beers from my wife and I at 1:55 and after that they tried keeping my debit card. I had a tab open with a bartender and I had to call the cops on them before they gave it back. I had stepped out to purchase a hot dog from the stand literally by the front door. So I got banned from this place. Still a cool spot from what I remember, cool drink specials, lots of nice IPA (I think I was too drunk x 20) and some a great place to run into some locals. Always some good tunes. I think Sundays were Rockabilly nights, the best night to go. Good place. If I was not banned I would still go :) read more

Support your local hipster bars by visiting this long time happening. You'll run into old friends, spill beer on strangers and accidentally hit on the lead singer in the featured band. I've never paid a cover and always leave with a smile. Best part of the Mix is the excellent location. There are a ton of other places within walking distance if the crowd isn't your scene or the lead singers wife is giving you the stink eye. read more

The alternative to the uppity, overpriced meat markets where everyone is looking at themselves in the mirror or texting on their cell phones. Completely unpretentious atmosphere and friendly staff that actually pays attention to you and doesn't blow you off for a pretty face down the bar from you. The places kind of bottlenecks as you get closer to the bar, but you end up making all new friends as you squeeze by to head to the back room! A varied bunch goes there, from the scenesters to the beautifully tattooed ladies, to the neighborhood gang. When there's a band playing, it's even more fun, because the crowd actually gets into the music! Seen the Sons of Bitches and the Jar of Flies there and a great show each time. You're also likely to see some bandmembers from whoever is playing at the White Rabbit hanging about as well. read more

Good place to go for cheap drinks and good live music. Every time I've been to the Mix, the music has been good rock music, which is what i like. No cover, so it gets even better. Cool little dive spot but nothing great and definitely not anything worth recommending . Oh the Mix.... my dear neighborhood bar. Ever since its been smoke free its always a great place to stop by and grab a cheap pitcher to share with a friend. Ill often go to demos across the street first and then over here for a quick drink or two, or six. They have live bands, a fun outdoor seating area and even swing dancing on some nights. :) read more

I've enjoyed myself every time I've been to the Mix. Seeing a band at the Mix is a plus because there is no stage. Sometimes it get's crazy packed. Well priced Pitchers. Patio with table and chairs. Not too bright, not too dark. I'm pretty sure they had a back room with couches and stuff which is great when you're with a large group and already drunk. It's ok if you want to change up your routine a bit, but I haven't been there since 2006. I can't go there anymore ever since I developed this allergy to cig smoke. There is no filtration system in this place and the patio is just as stinky. You can hardly see anything through the fog once it becomes packed with people and now that I'm allergic too, it equals no fun for me. The Mix is where it's at. I recently discovered that they have Angry Orchard on tap which just makes this place even better. Sitting out on the patio chatting with friends is a great way to spend any night. There is almost always live bands playing on the weekends and even if its not your cup of tea genre of music (it's a variety as wide as the Grand Canyon) it's still nice to see a live band and drink a drink. The Mix is a consistent and well loved fixture of the San Antonio bar scene. The drinks are cheap, they're strong, and they are no frills. The small patio will fit every smoker in San Antonio, somehow. There is never a cover and always music to enjoy. Don't expect any sort of fancy glassware, shaken cocktails, fresh juices, or fancy garnishes. I used to frequent this place when I lived in San Antonio. Now that I'm in Austin, I haven't been there in years. So when I went back, I was surprised when I saw a few old faces. the mix use to be my favorite bar to go to on the st. mary's strip but its recently gone down on its performance: customer service. i liked their i don't care hole in the wall style but once i get to the bar i really wish i was a guy. i can be the first one in line but those girl bartenders see me and help the dude next to me instead.. why? i do not know. i've never disrespected any of them on the contrary i would compliment them so why the sudden change blows my mind. i now go to hi tones or joeys because the mix doesn't deserve my money.. there's only 1 person that is super awesome there and his name is kyle so if y'all do end up going ask for him . read more

The Mix, its the perfect Mix. The staff make you feel at home, pour heavy and keep you safe. No fighting, and they mean it. Butter, Polly, Mish, Marc, Beer, Adrien and the others are FANTASTIC! The local bands are a good selection, its not always the same music scene night after night. They had a Dj (jive bomber i think) that guy was pretty great too. They have a couple pool tables, some darts, an enclosed patio, ok parking and great drink prices. I wouldnt have expected much because of the area but WOW! i see this place full more than the other bars around it. AND, there is a pizza guy that will sometimes come around and offer up $5.00 pizzas. I like that. Not far off the freeway too. I likes it. This is a friendly place to start - the locals that come here and the bartenders are very welcoming. Love that the happy hour bartenders are able to choose their own variety of music and are easy to talk to. Sergio is an awesome bartender, and really appreciate Adrian's smile along with his '70s thru 80s Metal music choices. Gets extremely crowded on Friday and Saturday and very limited seating. Drink prices are good and service is always fast. The girls bathroom is a nightmare and very small but once you have a few drinks you don't really care, it is normally pretty clean at least. Bartenders here are really great and manage to keep up with the fast pace very easily. They are very creative and will make you something special if you let them. This bar is a great stop if you're beginning or ending your night out on the St. Mary's strip. The drinks are extremely affordable, and there is almost always live music. This is a classic dive bar where you'll find college kids, young professionals and middle aged locals. I prefer this bar when it is slow, since the service is better and you can actually find a seat.
