Dear Monk, we need to break up, unfortunately I'm not used to being ignored.... I was there a few weeks back on a lazy Monday, not a lot of people dining. One server greeted me and told me "I'll be with you" 3 different times, he kept going back to the bar, print a receipt, look at it, go to a table, return to the bar, print a receipt... I was seating at the bar and I would've waited, had he served me a beer. I just walked out, I understand that sometimes people get flustered or slammed (it wasn't that busy but maybe he fell behind from earlier). But today I walked in, sat at a table, server took my order for a burger and a beer. Went back to the bar, then picked plates from a table, went back to the bar, took a pitcher to a table, went back to the bar, went to speak to the kitchen, returned to the bar.... Another server was posing or trying to look pretty in the bar and even though he looked at me several times, never bother to help. So I sat there like... And waited.... And waited.... I'm not expecting the burger to come out quick, but a beer? Couldn't they pour a beer, drop it and go back to chatting? Was greeted with a smile and sat down to watch the Dodger game. There were plenty of TVs playing multiple games to enjoy. Was able to get great suggestions because it was our first time there. Ali, the server was very friendly, informative and patient with us. We got the twisted pretzel and wings. Both were good. I ordered the cowboy steak. Which was good for a pub with a great price. My family had a late Mother's Day yesterday. Looking at previous reviews and photos and menu, we chose The Monk Pub. So glad we did! We were greeted warmly, and graciously given time to talk and catch up with each other before ordering. Mom and Sister and Brother all had a delicious sangria, and we got a pretzel with beer cheese and mustard to start. The main courses were delicious! My braised spare rib with designated was fork tender and savory, and accompanied by crispy Brussels sprouts (yum!), mashed potatoes and kraut. Mom got fish and chips, she said it was the best she ever ate. Sister had the loaded Spaezle, she loved it, very authentic. Brother had wedge salad with fried chicken, also delicious. My cousin is a regular here, and this was his choice for a birthday dinner. Hopefully that illustrates The Monks consistent quality! We came during happy hour, so the prices were good, and we ended up with way more food than we needed! The wait staff was amazing. They accommodated my grandpa, who is in a wheelchair, and even helped my grandma into her chair. Beyond above and beyond. If you order the sausage sampler, let them know if you can handle spicy food. It came with a bratwurst and a "rotating sausage". They had a chicken jalapeño sausage which I loooooved, but it would have been way too spicy for some of my other family members. Another standout: The short rib poutine. This is what my cousin ordered, and man was it yummy. It's on the appetizer menu, but he ordered it as an entree. We also ordered a mini wedge salad, which was plenty large, and pretzels for the table. The pretzels were pretty good, but in my opinion, could have had more salt on them. The beer cheese, curry ketchup, and mustard that came on the side of the meal was also great! Ps. There are a ton of taxidermy animals on the walls. So happy to have The Monk Gastropub back in Whittier. I was a big fan of their old location, and this return absolutely delivers. The Belgian-inspired food is comforting, flavorful, and done right. We tried the short rib poutine, which was rich and savory with tender meat and a great balance of gravy and fries. The fish and chips were excellent--crispy beer batter, nicely seasoned, and not greasy at all. The standout for me was the brätzel: a juicy sausage wrapped in pretzel dough, served with sauerkraut. Great food and atmosphere, it was strange to me why it was a bit empty when we came in. We all got to try some delicious items but the best by far was the short rib poutin with tater tots! It's definitely a must, replace the fries and do it with tater tots . On the other notes ? Service was fast and attentive, the restaurant is clean without a doubt and so we're the restrooms. I went here last night, and it was just as good as the original location! Friendly service, great food, great beer! For food, we ordered the Short Rib Poutine, Fish and Chips, and Sausage Sampler. The poutine was great, very flavorful. I know that the sauce is made with mushrooms, but they actually included mushrooms in it, which gave it a rustic feel. The fish and chips were just as great, fish had great flavor and was super crispy. Sausage platter was also good, but one of the sausages was spicy as heck, so just a fair warning. For drinks, we got the Frulli beer, which was perfectly refreshing in the Southern California heat. Service was fantastic. Our server Ruben gave great recommendations for food, and checked in on us frequently. He made conversation with us, and made us feel super welcomed, almost as if he knew he might be looking at returning regulars... The inside was a little loud with the music. It looks like they kept a lot of the decor from the first location, just giving this a new home. I will say that the price of the beers was a little steep, i think it came out to $14 each. But overall, i really enjoyed the service and the food, and would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for delicious rustic comfort food read more

First time back to the monk since the new owners closed down the original location on Greenleaf. I used to be a regular back when the original owners were running it. (Kyle and his daughter). I went a few times when the new owners took over but stopped since the quality wasn't the same. I gotta say... This place has fallen far from what it used to be. Our server was a nice guy and the restaurant itself was fine. My issue was with the food. We ordered kids chicken strips, monk burger, pretzel w/ beer cheese, wings, and a side wedge salad. My burger was cooked fine but was bland. Not much garlic to the garlic aioli in the burger and the meat itself was plain. The wedge salad was fine but came out on a plate with sticky caked on yellow residue (probably oil) on the bottom of the plate. My daughter's chicken strips were more like the flattened chicken pieces used in a sandwich which was fine. The problem was they were super rubbery. Needless to say we didn't eat these. The pretzel was really good but the beer cheese was watery compared to how it used to be. The chicken wings we received were not hot in the middle. The server was apologetic and removed a few of the items from the bill which we were grateful for. Unfortunately I doubt my family and I will be back to this place. read more

This is one of my all-time favorite restaurants and I have been a customer since they were at the old location under "The Rusty Monk". While it is sad they weren't able to keep the original location, they were forced out under conditions that weren't within their control. I believe it was a greedy landlord, but that's only what I heard. The food and beer here is excellent and well worth every cent! I've ordered just about every item off their menu and all have been delicious. For appetizer I always recommend a cheese board with or without charcuterie or the Bavarian pretzel. I highly recommend the Flat Iron Steak and a Bavik pilsner for entree and drink. For dessert you can't go wrong with the deep dish chocolate chip cookie. You can visit with friends, a date, or by yourself, it's always one of my top recommendation to friends. Service is always quick and friendly. I do miss at the old location they had Rudy the saxophonist on Friday evenings. I'm not sure if he performs at the new location, but it was always great seeing him and hearing him play. I think the only thing that could be improved is the ambiance. Maybe some older style tables and chairs or addition of some booths like the old location had, but that does not affect my recommendation. Always a favorite! read more

The drinks are on par. A little pricey, but good. Thats the norm now with the economy. The food on the other hand needs help. My wife ordered a chicken ceasar salad that was dry, no dressing. When I asked for more dressing I was told they ran out. So she opted for blue cheese. My burger was also dry, not very flavored. FYI, the pretzel is really good. The service is very attentive. Our server was extremely apologetic about the mishaps and offered my wife a second drink and some free desert on the house which was nice. This was our first time there and first impressions are big in the restaurant business. I may give them a second chance to see if they get better chefs or improve the ones they have. My husband ordered the sausage sampler and my son ordered the salmon with pommes puree and veggies, both were very satisfied. We also got the pretzel and charcuterie as an appetizer. The pretzel was soft, salty, and buttery; while the charcuterie was delicious. This place has never failed. We used to love it when it was The Rusty Monk and now that it had moved it seems it got even better. With a full menu. We had a great dinner last night and the service by all was amazing. Ruben specially made our night great. My favorite has always been the Monk Grilled cheese but I have tried the wings, burgers and steak and it's all delicious. There is music but is not too loud to where you can't talk we were able to talk and enjoy our time. Will keep coming back for sure. read more

The Monk is back, no alcohol yet. I asked the waiter and he said one to two months. I had the short rib and it came with kraut, Brussels sprouts and mashed potatoes and gravy. It was incredible and the portion size was absolutely massive. My wife ordered the flat iron steak but they ran out and gave her a ribeye. Perfect medium with chimichurri being the star. I am sorry, but I had to bring down my review to 3 stars due to the Gratuity Pay. I shouldn't be punished for bringing more people to your establishment so you can gain more traction. It gave us a bad taste in our mouth when we were asked if we wanted our change after we paid; however, that should not even be asked and a common courtesy. The food is good but the service is understaff making it slow. Please increase the party size for the gratuity pay 5 people is a bit ridiculous. OLD REVIEW 5 star review : THE MONK IS BACK! We are so back. Would recommend if you like Belgium food and beer. The interior has old decorations from the old location but in a new building so you can expect so of the old vibes.
