I have stayed at the Monte Cristo five times in the past 15 months and each time has been a true pleasure. Really nice, lowkey staff. It's on a busy street - when I lived in SF, I drove past it hundreds of times and didn't know it was there. But it is so well located! Within 3 blocks is an entrance to the Presidio, the high end shops and restaurants of Sacramento Street, Trader Joe's and Target. It is a hidden gem! Just a dozen or so rooms - decorated in an antique style but sparkling clean and in excellent condition. The bathrooms are very updated, including Toto toilets with a bunch of bidet buttons/options. The living and dining area downstairs are cozy and comfortable, with tons of snacks available 24 hours (chocolate, nuts, dried fruit, homemade cookies including gluten free options). My favorite is the breakfast - you have a menu of choices and the hot items are made fresh for you. My favorite is the veggie omelet. (I don't believe they serve meat fyi - they also have "vegan" soaps and lotions in the rooms - it's very San Francisco in that regard). A terrific and comfortable place to stay. read more

Absolutely fabulous stay in this comfortably renovated and entirely charming Victorian! Such a great experience, Jack and staff were amazing during our stay. The Room was super comfortable, well appointed with very nicely upgrades renovations! We stayed a week in the City and enjoyed this prime 'middle of it all' location! There is just street parking but my goodness we got lucky every day with parking out front or just around the corner! Ok the breakfast in bed every morning was a dream! Can we just move in?? Also the common area, the dining room and lounge were wonderful It is constantly stock full of treats, snacks from fruits, coffee and teas to candies to clearly homemade amazing cookies and muffins. I stayed here Feb 2017 for a work trip, and I could have not picked out a better B&B if I tried. Everything was perfect starting with check-in, the man at the desk was extremely personable and answered any questions I had. The room was gorgeous, very vintage looking, but the bathroom was very modern and upscale. Everything was very clean and easy to use. The breakfast that's included with the stay...I would pay big money for somewhere else. My boyfriend and I are still trying to track down a quiche recipe to mimic the one the chef made there. Anything you could want for breakfast, including having your order taken from a menu, is included. This is a great place to stay in San Francisco! Jack let us check in early and leave our luggage in the room. Everything was perfect! We stayed in room 15, which was an upper floor street-side room. I was worried about traffic noise but the rooms are soundproofed and it was very quiet! The bed was comfortable and the room was charming. The bathroom was beautiful! It was spacious, with a gorgeous countertop, sink, and heated bidet. I loved the automatic soft lights embedded in the mirror, so that a late night bathroom visit didn't involve bright lights. We appreciated the fact that heat was forced air, and not one of those loud units blasting away that keep you awake all night. There's a cozy sitting area downstairs in addition to the dining room. Breakfast is cooked to order or you can eat from the buffet of fruit, granola, and lots of other options. There are a lot of gluten-free options too. They are very accommodating for food allergies, and snacks are out all day. Next time we spend the night in San Francisco we're definitely staying at the Monte Cristo B&B! read more

This bed and breakfast was perfect! The rooms were gorgeous, and the bathrooms were fantastic! Clean, comfortable, all the important things you look for when you want to lay your head down and sleep. The chef and the food were awesome. The spread of berries, and other fruit is lovely. However, he offers to make other items. We had the quiche, which was perfect. And the coffee. OH MY GAWD! The coffee was spectacular. There is also a little area where if you need to print off your boarding passes, a computer and printer were made available to us. Everything was outstanding. From the moment we checked in, until we checked out. The innkeeper was friendly, knowledgeable, and an overall delight! If you are in the area, this is a great place to stay. Just like, The Count of Monte Cristo your tumultuous twists and hair pin turns leading to your front door miffed me. Not knowing what to expect I made a reservation based on your location. The occasion was a wedding conjoining two of my very closest friends. Love was in the air, and for lack of a better phrase, "I love love". There's just something about it. It may be the alchemist in me, but the intertwining of pheromones and hormones is scentually scintillating. And I know "scentually" isn't a word, nevertheless, the aerial aroma entices my soul and stimulates a natural stirring sentiment that is unique. Moving on... Entering the bed and breakfast I had low hopes. But once buzzed in the front door I entered a realm reminiscent of ,The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. An antique Victorian decor, the quarters were tight, but refreshingly the service was warm, the bed was plush, and the continental breakfast was stellar enough to leave Copernicus rubbing his belly in content. The most palpable piece to note is that even though the building is a bit aged, and located on a busy street right across from a fire house, the noise factor was as imposing as a midget on a basketball court. A non factor, respectfully. Love, folks, don't take it for granted. It's the most substantial of feelings and like grease on an axle it's what makes the world go round. Love. read more

Holy shit, I should have reviewed this place sooner. When I was thinking about applying to USF so long ago, my mother and I stayed here. It's right around the corner from the university and its ridiculously inexpensive. In short, this is the perfect place for the savvy tourist, that is, the kind of tourist who isn't into the Hilton and the wharf all the time. It's in a location that is easy to get around as there are many buses in the area. The accomodations are spare, but comfortable. This is a great incentive to get out and see the city fully. When you come back tired from the inclines and ready for bed, the place will not let you down. When my mother and I stayed here we were the only two in the place. The elderly asian couple who run it are extremely nice and gracious and offer quaint continental breakfasts. The bed in our room was a giant ornamental asian bed, with arcing woodwork and spindly slats all over it. The tub was an interesting little square (good for a chuckle) and the TV didn't really work. It was charming. Bottom line: This is a great base camp for San Francisco adventures. Check it out. You won't be sorry. read more

I'm giving them three stars because the place is so inexpensive. It's about $100/night and close to where we live. We had family come into town and rather than all six of us staying in our 2-bedroom 1-bath flat, or having his family stay at a hotel downtown my boyfriend and I ditched our digs to have the evenings away from family and made reservations at the Monte Cristo. There are pictures of the rooms on Trip Advisor. It's not really as old as the photo looks but it is an older place. They also have this tub that is deep and very interesting. The rim starts on the floor so you're stepping down into the shower/tub. I don't know how older people will maneuver this. It's not like a Japanese tub where it's high and deep, it was weird and deep like a big hole in the ground. I have never seen anything like. I also had to stoop to get under the shower (I'm barely 5 feet tall). My bofriend being a lot taller than I basically had to squat in the "tub"/"shower". We might have been showering incorrectly - we needed a manual we're such dorks. We had a room on the street level. The noise from outside didn't bother us and we slept really well every night. The room we were in sort of slanted and so did the bed so my boyfriend stuck a couple of socks against the headboard and wall so that the bed didn't rock. Other than that weirdness, the bed was really comfortable. No WiFi or cable television. We had a 13-inch in our room and there is also a flat screen in the sitting room but no cable. Being a B & B they had a continental. We checked it out one morning and there was fresh fruit (cantaloupe and strawberries), cereal, a weird sugar-coated toasted bread thingy, coffee, hard boiled eggs and bagels and/or toast on request. If you need a room that inexpensive and decent try the Monte Cristo. If you want something more, go somewhere else. read more

Nice rooms + great location. The woman who makes breakfast was amazing. So cheerful and funny, and her quiche was awesome. The perfect way to start the day. Who would know that this place actually used to be a brothel?!! oh yes ladies and gents this was one! But hey don't let that put you off at all. It's cosy and homely and not all brothely. Baked goods are served daily and breakfast are delicious and set you up for the day. The bedrooms are cosy but dainty. the bed was super comfy. I stayed at this B&B for two nights on a business trip. The room was beautiful and clean. The staff was welcoming, knowledgeable about the area, and attentive to my needs. The hotel was quiet; even though it is on Presidio Drive, I did not hear much street noise. I felt safe. I was especially impressed with the breakfast. It was made to order with fresh ingredients, and was delicious. I am a heavy Skype user and I had a nice clean, clear connection. So their wifi was good. The bath was beautiful and even included a Toto Washlet "bidet", which was a nice option. I might have missed it, but I didn't see an elevator. If you have mobility challenges with steps, be sure to indicate that when you book your room. That way they can put you on the first floor. In summary, I would gladly stay at the Monte Cristo again and would recommend it. read more

This bed-and-breakfast was absolutely outstanding. The decor is beautiful, all antiques and comfortable besides. The hospitality is a plus. I was able to check in very early. And when I got in at midnight there were cookies waiting in the dining area. Amazing. The breakfast the next morning was delicious. We have had such an amazing stay! They texted me morning of arrival to check what time we would be in, and gave us a map and advice on places to go. The room we stayed in was gorgeous, the barroom more gorgeous. And, silly bonus, but the room and bathroom had automatic lights which was nice so you weren't fumbling when coming in. The breakfast was AMAZING! The cook, whose name I forget but he has the sweetest southern accent, did a fantastic job whipping up some amazing hot dishes in the kitchen to accompany the cold bar. This place is in more of a residential area but everything is a quick uber ride away, or even a nice walk if you don't mind that! We hiked up to Golden Gate park the one day and stopped a bunch of cool places on the way. We'll definitely be back next time we come to San Francisco read more

The outside is a very unassuming Victorian. The inside is an unbelievably well cared for ornate--glory days of the 1890's. I felt like I was staying in a well-preserved museum except for the large screen TVs, programmable toilets (not joking) and dim-able lights. Because I was on four-day business trip, I didn't get to take advantage of much chill time in the sitting room off the dining room until my last night. The continental breakfasts cooked by Chef Nick, is amazing, accommodating and very nice. He's got that southern charm and cooking chops that will make you think about breakfast during your stay there. In between the gluten free pastries and veggie quiches is dried fruit, fresh fruit, bacon, sausage and sourdough bread/toast (It's San Fransisco :-)) Everything was great--my only minor suggestion would be installing ceiling fans. Yep they had those back then. It's a bit stuffy in the guest rooms since the plexiglass covering the windows keeps out the traffic noise and there's no a/c. Leave your corsets and bloomers but bring your Iphone and tablets so you can enjoy your apps while stepping back in time. read more

The bed and breakfast itself is very clean and the bathrooms are remodeled, which was nice. The food was amazing and chef nick was so kind. I used public transit the entire time I was there and this is in walking distance to many nice restaurants/bars. I was traveling solo and felt very safe in the neighborhood. I stayed here about a year ago and the stay was so wonderful I had to make a review with my new yelp! I stayed in one of the bigger suites with a bathroom inside and it was so so beautiful! The bathroom was completely remodeled and extremely clean and the bed was comfy and large! The place itself has a very old feel to it but the rooms are beautiful inside. What gets me to write a review such a long time after is their complimentary breakfast. There was a long table of treats, cereal, pastries, fruit, you name it. Eggs were made on request and the cook had just put out this INCREDIBLE homemade cinnamon role cake looking thing. This is literally my most favorite place to stay ever! I brought my mom to San Fransisco on her very first vacation after my brothers passing to visit my daughter, her granddaughter in her new place of residence San Fransisco. She is currently going to school there. I had never stayed at a B&B but something prompted me to this hotel. Jack the owner text us before we came to check on our arrival. Super personal and professional. He greeted us at the door also when we arrived. Carl checked us in and he was also the sweetest. Our room was adorable. And I'm lil OCD and honestly felt like I was at home in my own bed. Everything was just fresh and clean. The bathrooms have a seat warmer and even a bidet'. My daughter and I pushed it on my mom and never laughed so hard. She's 74 and jumped so high. She had no clue what it was. Nick is the chef there and he immediately became my new bestie. Best cook EVER!! And the sweetest guy you could ever meet. I never thought about my daughter who lived in SF as being a 3 person to a room I checked in as only 2 people. Not thinking she would sleep or eat there with us , which of course she would. So I went to talk to Jack the owner to insure he knew she was sleeping and eating the morning breakfast and he told me not worry about it. Most hotels would of course make you pay. And I of course didn't mind paying but it felt so nice because he treated my daughter like family. Not an extra room rate. This hotel ROCKS! I love these people. They make it what it is and the rates are also amazing though I would even pay more. I miss my daughter , and Nick my new bestie and his amazing quiche every am. And all of there adorable faces.
