This was a cute inn we decided to stay at while visiting Black Mountain. You can't beat the price especially if you aren't planning on being in the room too often. The inn itself was super cute and cozy. The room was simple and small, but it worked. The bed and pillows weren't the comfiest, but again, for one night it was fine. They offered a dinner special which included filet mignon but we decided to go out instead. They do have a cute bar and patio, as well as rocking chairs out front. We had a night cap and sat outside for a little which was nice. For a quick one night stay, this inn is a good option. read more

Bare bones place w minimal room amenities. No tv some rooms have no individual hvac settings. I chose the hotel in part because they advertise a restaurant and bar. Neither are open on Mondays and Tuesdays. Needless to say the breakfast they advertise is also unavailable. I feel misled and a bit cheated. There are other hotels in town. My wife and I had dinner here tonight and loved it. The food, cocktails, atmosphere and service was first class. My husband and I just stayed there for the first time, and we LOVED it. The staff was very friendly and the place was beautiful. It's nestled in a quiet mountain town that is just a short distance away from the city of Asheville. The hotel is well appointed. Outside, there is pretty lighting everywhere. During your stay, you can sit out on the front porch in one of the rocking chairs, hang out or play a lawn game at their large gazebo, or relax in their comfy lobby. Upon arrival, we received two complementary glasses of champagne and went up to our 1937 Queen room to find a little box of Kilwin's truffles and a welcome note on our bed. The room was cozy, with a classic yet stylish feel. You can definitely get a sense of the history of the place, with its crystal doorknobs, crown moulding, hardwood floors in the bedroom and tile in the bathroom. I couldn't tell whether I felt more like I was in a cute boutique hotel or the comfy and familiar home of a relative. I was pleasantly surprised that you could control the thermostat in your room, which was great since I like to keep it nice and cool at night. The bed was definitely on the firm side, so if you prefer something with a bit more give, you may not like it as much, but it actually worked well with my bad back. I'm glad I brought my own pillow, though, because the ones that came with the room had no support. The chair and ottoman were very comfortable--a great reading spot. One thing I thought was an awesome idea, was that they had a designated washcloth for removing makeup. Every time I stay some place and have to use a nice white wash cloth, I always feel a little bad about getting my makeup all over it, so this was a nice touch. I also enjoyed the wall art displayed throughout the building, which were painted by what I assume are local artists, rather than the standard boring prints you see in all of the chain hotels. I really loved all of the little touches that make this place so unique. The first night we stayed there, we ate at Milton's; the food and drinks were superb. Our server, Caroline, was very friendly and attentive. We thought she was great! We ate out at the side patio, which was very pretty, but did get a little dark. However, we didn't really mind it and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The Monte Vista offers a continental breakfast, which is obviously not going to include a lot, but it's free, so you can't complain. It's served in their very nice garden room. I loved sipping my coffee and eating my breakfast in that natural light-filled space. Outside, in the back, they have more tables for dining, seating for lounging, and what appeared to be a fire pit or outdoor fireplace, which must be nice to light on cooler nights. There are dining tables inside as well and an indoor fireplace, but we didn't sit there during our stay. A few things to note: it is both a boutique and historic hotel. So, do not expect to find things like a TV, telephone, mini fridge, or coffee maker in your room--at least not in one of the 1937 rooms. You are also not going to find an elevator, swimming pool, or fitness center. If those are the kinds of things you are looking for, you will be disappointed. However, their website is transparent about what to expect, so I don't know why some commenters are so upset by it. On the other hand, if you want a relaxing getaway, great hospitality, delicious food, a charming atmosphere that has real character, and not just another cookie cutter establishment, this place should be on your travel list. read more

This is a difficult review to write. Positives first: the location is great as it's walkable to everything in historic Black Mountain, it was clean, it has a great restaurant (Milton's) in the hotel, has some lovely outdoor seating areas, and the staff was really nice. Area of growth for the hotel: Basically put, there is maintenance work that needs to be done. In particular I was concerned by the cracks in the walls of my room above the room entry way and bathroom door. The room also had limited electric outlets as the lamps were all plugged in by extension cord and the only place to charge my phone was an outlet in the bathroom. The walls are also super thin and the rooms on the first floor that face the courtyard hear everything out there. Overall, it was okay but there is tons of potential to make this place great with additional maintenance. read more

We enjoyed our stay at the monte vista hotel. The lobby doubles as a restaurant a few nights out of the week and the tables are reserved for restaurant guests which makes it a bit difficult as hotel guest if you want to just enjoy the fire. Our bathroom door did not properly shut which we were told would be fixed during our 3 night stay but it wasn't. Other then that it's a lovely little place as a great jump off point to hike and explore black mountain. read more

I will be happy to adjust if I ever hear from the GM as promised about the issues w/my stay. The property is under new ownership and they are apparently letting it go to seed. I have been staying there for several years while my daughter has been attending Montreat...Shower didn't work, tub was disgusting, and I could locate no person to help me. Likewise what used to be the best breakfast in town has turned into literally an egg mcmuffin and some dry cereal. It's over-priced and headed in the wrong direction. Steer clear. read more

Not great for what i have found staying at other boutique hotels. I only booked because the rest of the accommodations in the ares had worse reviews. The only rooms with tv are the rooms located in another building in the back of the original hotel, this is accessed by a narrow hallway between them. The room I stayed in (room 15) had black dirt specks on the ceiling above the shower but other than that the room was clean. Getting your bags in the building fromthe side entrance is a difficult due to the sharp incline and door tension and some additional illumination would be helpfull. read more

No TV in room, not a big deal really. Dresser was literally falling apart as in drawers falling out. No shelves or towel bars in bathroom. Bed was so noisy when you moved it would literally wake up your spouse. The AC/heating vent was located directly above the bed, cold air and resulting sore throat. On check in the only services we requested were trash removal and towels, didn't happen. For what we paid for what we got was over priced. Very pretty lobby area - nice little bar area - cozy dining area however it is very crowded so as a guest it is not welcoming to just sit by the fire. The room we have is above the kitchen and dining area and is so loud . At check in it was described as a great room with great lighting - did not mention how loud everything is from 4-10 pm. No TV, no phone , small bathroom with no vent and the bathtub is stained . The bed is super hard - it is clean which is a plus- the furniture is worn - things broken - . Terrible experience!! I am in town for business and wanted to stay somewhere other than a chain hotel. I prefer small, local owned B and B's and Hotels. The staff was very unprofessional which caused me to check out after one night. When I walked in the door I was greeted by a gentleman who says to me, "what's up?" When I respond with, "I'm sorry, what did you say," the gentleman then says disingenuously, "I said good evening." This is less than what expect from a hotel's staff; maybe I expect too much. The next morning, I drive my car to the front of the building in order to get some complimentary continental breakfast. I walk in the front door and look for the food and I don't see it. I wait for the employee behind the front desk to finish a conversation with other guests and I ask where the continental breakfast was and she says, "it's in that room (pointing) but it's only for guests." To say nothing about the fact that she assumed I that I was not a guest, when informed her that I was she blamed me for not introducing myself as a guest! I ate, promptly gathered my things in my room and proceeded to check out. While checking out, I informed the employee the reason I was checking out early. She then said that I was, "thinking things about her that was not true." She never apologized, but had the unmitigated gall to tell me what was in my mind! I'm a bit shocked at the mixed reviews after staying here, but my guess is that it may have something to do with being marketed as a hotel and truly being a B&B. The rooms are tiny - you have room for a bed, a dresser, and to walk around to the bathroom and windows. The closet holds 20-30 hangers, more than most of us need for short-term accommodations, and the bathroom is "frugal" with space, but not tiny. All of that said - it is quaint, immaculate, and the staff is friendly. There is a restaurant inside, one on the gorgeous back patio, and a full bar, in addition to the spacious sitting room with a fireplace that screams to be stuck in with 8 feet of snow outside. The staff was super helpful and kind and we enjoyed being within walking distance of the shops in Black Mountain. I don't have a single negative thing to say about this experience - it was great! Just remember, it's a B&B, not the Marriott...and that made it twice as awesome! read more

Almost an institution in the Black Mountain area, this is the first time I've stayed here in years, and the first time I stayed in the section called 'the Lodge'. I can't say that I'm thrilled. Although my husband and I reserved a 'queen bed', apparently some queens are bigger than others. The bed is just a glorified double, and the mattress is much too hard for my liking. The linens have a very cheap feel to them, and the pillows are definitely a lower end. Frankly, if full payment hadn't been demanded at check in, I would have checked out and found other accommodations for the weekend. The-outside spaces are lovely; benches, chairs, a gazebo, and a lovely outside dining area. Unfortunately the guest rooms are a let down. Aside from the above listed problems, there is no fan in the bathroom, and the crank to open the window in the bathroom is broken. The shower is placed rather low on the wall. I an 5'7" and really had no problem, but my 6' husband had to duck to wash his hair. One is allowed one towel, hand towel and washcloth per person. What happens, women, when we want to wash our hair? Also, my husband took the ice bucket provided in our room to fill it, only to be told by staff that there is no ice machine. The staff went above and beyond and filled it from the kitchen, but, really? We had dinner on the patio and some of the food, while good, was pricey and somewhat pretentious for the location. The service, while friendly and knowledgeable was a little slow and a little off. One should bring both cocktails to the table for two at the same time, rather than singularly. I got the feeling that this server would be much better were the restaurant busier. Everyone's entitled to an off night. We'll be eating elsewhere during our remaining time here. Bottom line, the rooms are small, the beds are small, the bathroom is small. The non-skid surface in the tub is permanently 'dirty', and dingy. There is no grab bar in the bathroom, the toiletries are skimpy as is the allocation of towels. The window unit AC is somewhat noisy. No ice machine, but they do give you a bottle of water. Parking is free, plentiful and convenient. The linens seem cheap and the mattresses are hard. If you're looking for mountain ambiance, it's great. If, however, you're looking for comfort, stay somewhere else. I wanted to LOVE this place. I wanted to have a place to return to, (I'm an alumnus of a local college), but I just don't. read more

We really enjoyed our stay! Great location, very clean, and has lots of historic details in the architecture. We enjoyed cocktails by the fireplace inside and outside at different times. Our room's AC was broken. We asked for help and were told "it works just wait a while" and then we overheard a staff member complaining about us for asking. We asked again in the morning and were told someone would get to it but then no one followed up. At check out we told whatever staff member was working and he was SO kind and apologetic and offered to get us some money back on our card. The Monte Vista Hotel is true boutique hotel tucked away in the quaint town of Black Mountain, NC. Our stay was leisurely and very peaceful. Kudos to Shane McLaurin and his staff for a relaxing time. We stayed over the 4th of July weekend and could view the fireworks from the front porch The staff was very attentive, especially Lauren at the front desk, and Joe at the lobby bar. Their onsite restaurant, Milton's is to die for! It is based on their other location in Georgia, menu created by chef Derek Dollar. We plan to visit again when we come back to Western NC. read more

Had a wonderful anniversary at the Monte Vista. Beautiful old hotel that has been recently remodeled. The staff was very friendly especially, Lorraine. You can walk 2 blocks down the street to downtown Black Mountain. We found live music in a small pub. We had dinner in the hotel. It was one of those meals where every bite was better than the last. There is a fire pit in the courtyard where guests congregate after getting a drink from the bar. Old historic hotel has partially morphed due to some recent updating into an overpriced "boutique" hotel more expensive than most major hotels in nearby Asheville. Our $300 room was on the 3rd floor and note there is no elevator in the building. For our early September stay the room air-conditioning was blasting and the room freezing with no thermostat available to control; opened windows for fresh (warmer) air but no screens. Bed was not that comfortable and creaked with the slightest movement. On-prem Milton's restaurant makes a play for upscale but the waitstaff was totally clueless. Breakfast was continental style, served on the bar top. Best part was its only a 2 block walk to downtown Black Mountain. read more

This recently renovated hotel is nothing like a Holiday Inn, and that's a good thing! For one thing, they have a resident cat who loves to curl up on your lap and purr. The rooms are comfortable, if a bit spartan: no tv, radio, clock, or phone. But the staff is great, and it's fabulous sitting on the covered front porch, watching the world go by. We didn't eat at the restaurant, so can't comment on the food. But I will certainly stay there again when I'm in the area. read more

This review is regarding the restaurant. I've not stayed in the rooms at the Monte Vista, so have no idea of the rooms or service. But I will say, the restaurant/bar staff is poorly trained and the food is overpriced. If you want to spend $30.00 for 4 thin slices of rib eye steak over mashed potatoes with no sides, go ahead. (Think sushi size slices). But I get ahead of myself. We arrived for dinner early and decided to wait in the bar for our table. We took a seat at the bar, but after sitting there 5-10 minutes,the bar tender had never acknowledged us. Never even looked at us, as she served the folks right next to us. Not even a "be with you in a minute". Really?? When we were seated, the table just behind us was set for 8 with 3 children's place settings. As we're somewhat hard of hearing, we asked to be moved, but were told there were nothing else available, even though there were empty tables all around us and also in the lobby area, close by. The 8 top came and were very loud. So loud that we didn't finish dinner, just asked for a check. As we were leaving our server told us the manager wanted to help make up for a bad evening. So the manager brought 2 tickets for a free appetizer, gave them to the server, and walked away. She never even looked at us. Huh? A customer that just spent $120.00 for dinner in my restaurant is so unhappy that they leave their meal unfinished. In my way of thinking, I'm going to want to speak with them personally. I left the tickets with the hostess. It won't matter for us, as we'll not be going back, but my advice if you want good value and good service... save your money and your frustration. My husband and I really enjoyed out stay at Monte Vista! It's within walking distance of the ever-adorable Downtown Black Mountain and just off the Interstate. The beds are incredibly cozy and there's something rather magical about the hotel itself. The only downside I can think of is that the doors are locked after an unspecified hour so we had to phone the front counter several times after returning to the hotel late one night - granted, we were much younger than most other guests we saw... so they may not have a need for 1am entry! We would definitely stay here again. It's a great break from Holiday Inns and such! read more

Overall a good experience. Here for a busy family wedding weekend. The room was fine, but I would recommend adding a mirror to a wall in the room. For a mother and daughter preparing for two events, the one mirror in the bathroom made things stressful! The food was very good for the two meals I had. The staff were friendly, if a bit overwhelmed at times by the large numbers at the wedding. Soundproofing was an issue, lots of people there at one time. We traveled from AZ over Labor Day weekend to attend our nephew's wedding nearby and stayed at the Monte Vista. It was our first trip to NC and we had a most unique experience. This was two weeks prior to the hurricane that soaked NC, but Mother Nature practiced that weekend for heavy rain. Our room was flooded the afternoon we arrived and again the next day. The hotel manager, Russ, had been on the job for just two weeks but he and the rest of the staff were superb and moved us to another room, constantly making sure that we were comfortable and well taken care of. Dinner at Milton's was incredible. My husband had shrimp and grits and I had Southern fried chicken as we wanted to taste local cuisine. We also enjoyed a Caprese salad of heirloom tomatoes. We have fond memories of the Monte Vista and Southern hospitality at its finest. Thanks to Ashley, Christian, Locksley, Lorraine, Kelly and all the rest of the staff for a great trip. read more

The accommodations were lovely, the staff was superb, and our daughter's reception was absolutely wonderful!
