REVIEW: "The Music Man" at the Winter Garden Theater on July 22, 2022 In my first trip back to Broadway in almost a year, I was hesitant to get tickets for Jamie W. and me to see such an overly familiar crowd-pleasing warhorse like Meredith Willson's 1957 classic piece of Americana musical theater. However, the chance to see two iconic performers like Hugh Jackman and my personal favorite Sutton Foster appeared too alluring to bypass - even though both were out with COVID at various times in June. Then I saw a YouTube review of the show from a Broadway fanboy who had bought back mezzanine seats just like me. His enthusiasm sold me. If you don't know the plot, then you are clearly living under a rock as the show is about con man Prof. Harold Hill and his attempt to bilk the good people of River City, Iowa, by selling them band instruments and uniforms for their kids and promising them music lessons. Hill planned to skip town when the Wells Fargo wagon came to town with the goods, but he found himself falling for the one woman who saw through his chicanery, town librarian Marian Paroo. The athletic exuberance and impressive coordination of the musical numbers really made this production soar as familiar set pieces took on new life like "76 Trombones", "Marion the Librarian" (with nary a dropped book), and "Shipoopi". We consider ourselves very lucky to have seen both Jackman and Foster perform here. As Hill, Jackman nailed the character's smooth charisma even though he didn't delve that deeply into his darker pained side. He was less Robert Preston (the role's unparalleled originator) and more Gene Kelly but without the edgy cynicism. Somehow he still made the storyline work. If you've never seen Foster onstage, you're missing out big time. Even in the decidedly secondary role of Marian, her triple-threat talents were on full display. The tap dance finale gave me the proverbial chills. It was my first time at the fabled Winter Garden where Barbra floored them nearly sixty years ago in " Funny Girl". A top-notch supporting cast has been assembled with Jefferson Mays and Jayne Houdyshell perfect as the befuddled mayor and his wife and Benjamin Pajak the ideal lisping Winthrop. The production team repeats the same stellar talent responsible for the recent Bette Midler revival of "Hello, Dolly!" with director Jerry Zaks, choreographer Warren Carlyle and designer Santo Loquasto. It was an evening at the theater that was enthralling for the entire family. Go see it as soon as you can before Jackman's and Foster's contracts end as I already heard rumors that Justin Timberlake is up for Hill. Not my idea of bringing sexy back. I took my mom to see this show and we had the most incredible time!! The theater was super clean and all the staff were so helpful. We sat front row Mezzanine and had the most perfect view! Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster are giving the most incredible performances and the whole cast is awesome. We had a smile on our faces the entire time and didn't want it to end! This is a great show for anyone who loves classic musical theater. Definitely a must see! read more

It had been a while since I had seen a show on Broadway. I'm glad I got to see Hugh on stage! Sutton Foster definitely had the best voice on stage, but Hugh's energy brought an extra level of fun. Overall, there were some exceptional voices. The energy is high for the whole show. You need to listen close for what is being said, but even if you missed some lines, you can get the general gist of Music Man's farce. One of the most amusing things that happened was Hugh Jackman fell during the finale! He did a good job brushing himself off despite everyone laughing - including himself. You could tell he was having a good time in the final weeks of the show. read more

I, like many, wanted to see the music man due to Hugh Jackman. This was made apparent to me when he first showed his face the loud long applaud's lasting quite some time. I enjoyed the singing, dancing, costumes and acting. But by far young Benjamin Pajak stole the show. read more

Hugh Jackman was hands down the greatest showman (see what I did there?!) as Harold Hill in "The Music Man." His stage presence, captivating; his chemistry with co-star Sutton Foster, delicious; & the way he interacted with the younger actors was sweet & endearing. After the show, he came out & waved to his waiting audience at the stage door. I'd never seen "The Music Man" nor did I know what it was about but its influence on pop culture is far reaching because I knew many of the songs from tv & movies. Winter Garden is a great venue. We sat in row C which was too close to the stage (first world problems), so I'd suggest choosing a row farther back to take in all the action. Side note: I'm a fan of true-crime podcasts & also into Hulu's "Only Murders in the Building." I was giddy to see Jayne Houdyshell, the actress who plays Bunny, on stage alongside Hugh. Such a star-studded cast! Go see it! It's playing until the end of Nov., just be aware of dates Hugh Jackman isn't performing, if you're coming specifically to see him. read more

Hugh Jackman as Professor Harold Hill sings and dances in this Broadway revival of The Music Man at the iconic Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway. Yes, I know. The Wolverine. But believe me, he is a lot more than an X-Man. He is really an entertainer. I want to recommend this version of the show to anyone that has seen the movie with Robert Preston and Shirley Jones. High Jackman and Sutton Foster bring in their own iconic performances and are in no way in the shadow of those who came before. And if you've never seen a Broadway show because you think they are too expensive or maybe you even think they might be boring compared to "Call of Duty". Drop what you're doing and go see this! It is SO MUCH FUN! You will come out of the theatre humming and skipping to the tunes. This is really a treat, and I can't recommend it enough. We're not supposed to take photographs during the show, so you won't see any here. But take my word for it. You don't want to miss Hugh Jackman in the iconic revival of a Broady classic Musical Comedy. I went into this show with pretty high expectations, considering the high ticket prices and hype around it. I was honestly a bit disappointed. The performers themselves are amazingly talented! Hugh Jackman is such a performer! He exceeded any expectations I went in with. Sutton Foster was unfortunately out with COVID, but her understudy, Audrey Cardwell, who was actually debuting the role at the performance I attended, was amazing! The production quality of this production is very impressive. The sets, costumes, and choreography are flashy and fun. The show itself is just a bit boring for me and I don't love the story. It may just be before my time, but I just didn't feel that it was worth the ticket price. There are so many amazing shows on Broadway right now, so honestly I'd recommend to go see two other amazing shows, which will cost the same if not less as one ticket to this show. read more

There was so much energy throughout the show and I found it joyful. I found myself smiling (behind my mask) repeatedly. It was uplifting and just plain fun. Hugh Jackman is a heckuva showman. he made that clear in this musical. it had all the pop and flash of the original (the movie, I am not old enough to have seen Robert Preston on Broadway), and Jackman was playing Prof. Harold Hill, not trying to be Preston playing him. very enjoyable from beginning to end, and realizing that Charlie Cowell was played by the son (Remy) of one of my favorite actors, René Auberjonois, was a cherry on top. great ensemble, great dancing, great singing. over the top, but isn't it supposed to be?? read more

Such a FUN show. Can't imagine a better person to play the role of Harold Hill than Hugh Jackman. He really gets the crowd going and goes the extra mile to break the fourth wall and connect with the audience. I think the most impressive part of this show is the dancing of the entire cast. I love that they extended some of the songs to add extra dance moments. The kids were really great!! I rushed tickets for this show 4 times by getting in line at 6 am and waiting til the box office opened at 10:30 am. $50 is a really great deal compared to the full price tickets!!! read more

Went to see this show today. It is an old fashioned Broadway spectacular. You walk out of there singing many of the songs. It is a star vehicle for Hugh Jackman and you can see his joy as he performs on his face. He is a better dance though than singer and to be totally honest, his costar Sutton Foster, is truly the best performer in the show. Her beautiful voice and comic timing brings new depth for the librarian Marian. It is definitely worth seeing. read more

Excellent handling of a classic musical. The cast was on point and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster have great stage chemistry and the young man playing Winthrop is a pro also. The choreography and music is very old school. If you enjoy the classics, this is for you! And, not sure how long it will last but the cast comes out and visits with Mr Jackman spending a lovely amount of time with fans. read more

Last minute ticket window tickets still weren't cheap but they were worth it. Hugh is awesome. There was even a "technical problem" that stopped the show entirely w him on stage just ad libbing to stretch the time before it got fixed! Never seen that before and everyone enjoyed it. Hugh Jackman might not be performing the night you go. They don't tell you in advance. Great cast but we were left bummed & we weren't told in advance he was not there. They yell/shout as you're entering theater and yell loudly to go get a refund if you care. Too late to go to a different show at that point. Just a huge bummer. This was an unforgettable show.  I had fourth row center orchestra which I bought from the box office last minute.  Sutton Foster was out with covid so her understudy filled in, reason I was able to get this great seat I am sure.  Nobody likes to hear "covid" especially when the show run just began a few days ago.  Kathy Voytko was outstanding and has an amazing voice!  She was only in two dance numbers though?  That means the great Sutton Foster as Marion would have only danced twice?  It doesn't even matter because Hugh Jackman stole the show as Harold Hill!...wow, in every way!  What charisma and showmanship! This was a fantastic production all around.  All cast members were uniquely talented for their roles and the choreography was beautiful.  Pick a little ladies and barbershop quartet men were appropriately cast. The scenery and costumes were gorgeous and you just can't beat the cute storyline of a con artist coming to town wrapping everyone up in their own musical numbers in the midst of a love story.  Some of those ultra-talented kids were making their Broadway debuts too!  The audience was going wild and appreciated the show going on!  I highly recommend and will always remember it. read more
