A gem of a local business in Tucker. We went here for a double-decker keyboard stand. We called and spoke with Paul, who quoted us a fair price. When we got there Paul was friendly with my whole family, kids included, and the same can't be said for some of the other music shops we've stopped at in the past. There was no pressure and he was happy to let the boys roam and gawk at his amazing selection. He is clearly knowledgeable about his gear, but very easy to talk to even for a non-musician like myself. He also helped answer questions we had about getting our kids excited about music and instruments. My boys have been talking non-stop about Mr. Paul's cool store and all the instruments they saw. Today I visited Music Trader and met the owner, Paul. He's been in operation for about 20 years and obviously enjoys what he does. He restrung my guitar in no time at all for a song, $10. I don't know what happened to the guy from Marietta, but it didn't reflect my experience at all. I live in Tucker and I always prefer to support local businesses over chain stores. That's what keeps our town from looking as homogeneous as Dunwoody, Alpharetta, or Suwanee. I'll be making Music Trader my regular stop for my music needs. read more

I wish that I could move Paul and his shop to California. He is a good person who obviously does a good job. Prices are far better than the big guitar shops while his attitude is delightful (unlike the snooty boutiques) He has a resonator blues guitar that just has to go home to North California -- if only I can convince my wife that 12 guitars are not too many! read more

Typically not a negative person, but wanted to relay an experience I just had with the Music Trader store. I purchased an acoustic guitar for my daughter a couple weeks ago (her first guitar). The owner directed us to a certain line of guitar, and we walked away happy. Come to find out upon her first lesson that the guitar can't actually play chords, due to cheap construction. Will tune up fine, and an open chord sounds ok, but as soon as you go up the neck, it sounds terrible. Brought it in this morning to discuss with the owner, and he dismissed me outright, saying basically "it's cheap construction, what did you expect?"....well, I would have expected you to TELL me that it wasn't worth our time, and directed us to a guitar that can actually play chords! read more

I spent fifteen minutes in THAT big box store on the 85 access road today looking for a 'starter' guitar to learn on. No one bothered to even greet me. So I left. And went to the bank to withdraw $1,000 cash. I went back to the big box store and walked around holding the money in my hands. While I did receive a few odd looks from several customers, not a single store employee made eye contact. So I moved on. Twenty minutes later, I'm in Gwinnett thinking and hoping that this particular location of THAT big box store might be different. Wrong! Even worse, the store was a complete mess with cardboard boxes littering the floor in front of the wall where the guitars are. So I came home, defeated, thinking maybe the guitar would have to wait. But after a quick Google search I found a local dealer just around the corner. I almost had a heart attack when I walked in to The Music Trader. I was actually greeted! After getting over my initial shock, I told Paul about my experience at the other two stores and then more about what I was looking for. He gave several recommendations on guitars that would be suitable for me to learn on. After choosing one, he let me dig through a container to grab several different thicknesses of picks, pointed out the cables, threw in a tuner and I was good to go. Even with all the chitchatting about my horrible experience earlier and Paul giving some tips on things to learn and videos to watch, I still spent less time in The Music Trader than I did in those other places -- all while getting myself set up and ready to start playing. Ever since I was a 6th grade trumpet student in need of valve oil and a music stand, Paul has been running this little music store in an aging strip shopping center. You're probably not going to find what you're looking for (unless you're looking for a $29 purple guitar or the August 1987 issue of Keyboard magazine). You will, however, find lots of interesting items that you can't find anywhere else. This is the best place in town if you need odds and ends, or just have a little money and time to burn. When I needed to rig up my grandma's hand-me-down stereo to my turntabIe I got all sorts of bad advice from hucksters trying to sell me expensive gadgets. Then, just as I expected, good ol' Paul came through for me with a $15 solution that works like a charm. He's not afraid to talk you out of a purchase. Nor is he afraid to advertise the fact that 90% of his inventory is cheap junk. I know many people who find it very rewarding to dig around looking for the hidden gems. I even get an odd feeling of satisfaction when I see something I just bought at some other store in Paul's store for less money...and in better condition. A Hollywood set designer could never come close to replicating this place. read more

Paul is a super nice guy. I was looking for an acoustic electric guitar for my nine-year old and for me, and he steered us to the perfect guitar. Prices seem reasonable although I'm a total newbie. Paul answered all of my dumb newbie questions and made me feel like all of my questions were valid and worthy of a good, clear answer. I shyly wandered into this store a couple of years ago (I live and work near Tucker), when I was thinking about buying a guitar for my middle daughter but wasn't sure how serious she'd be. (The sign outside Music Trader says "Guitars for $49.") The owner, Paul, showed me where those guitars were hanging around the shop, told me to take down and play any one I wanted, and then went back to another customer, who was just picking up his well-worn Strat after a setup from Paul. I didn't buy a $49 guitar for my daughter, but as I was leaving I picked up on how pleased the Strat guy was with Paul's work and his prices. It just so happened that I had in the trunk of my car an early Fender Vibrasonic that I had tried to take in to Kerry Marchmain of TooManyGuitars--before I realized he'd sold the business (and that that , in turn, had closed its walk-in doors). So on an impulse, I walked back into Music Trader and asked Paul if he'd take a look at the amp. He did right away, diagnosed the likely problem, and got it back in working order in a week, for a totally reasonable price. Most recently I brought in a new Danelectro that my daughter got for Christmas that sounded great--as long as you didn't pick the big A or E string too hard (major fret buzz). It turned out to be a simple tress rod adjustment, for which Paul refused payment. My point in this review is that Music Trader does great instrument setup or repair (Paul has colleagues that he draws on for work on some gear). Paul is a real straight shooter, and I wouldn't hesitate to go to him first for any repair query. read more
