Although this is not the best of the best, this is definitely the best of Davis. People recommend Osteria Fasulo, but this restaurant is far superior to that. Besides, Osteria Fasulo is faux Italian and a total joke.. (please refer to my review there) I was prepared for the snobby attitude that everyone experiences, however, we didn't get that vibe at all. We went on a rainy Saturday evening, and even though we were there first, there were several parties to soon follow after, making the restaurant totally packed! I would totally recommend a reservation for weekends. I had the chicken dish and it was delicious. For $19, it was well worth it as one could easily note the labor that went into making it. Layered with a tender slice of chicken breast on top of a juicy portabello mushroom, this was all layered in a crunchy and delicious pasta sfoglia, stacked on top some yummy mashy potatoes. I couldn't be happier, it was very filling, and utterly delicious! I look forward to dining here in the near future. I ate here for my Godfather's birthday along with my mother on a Friday night. I made my reservation online earlier in the day and everything worked out smoothly. The first thing we all noticed was that while the restaurant looks like nothing on the outside, the inside feels very cozy. The low ceiling, wine cabinets, and fireplace really make you feel at home. We were waited on by the owners of the restaurant, who, judging by the other comments I've seen, were having a good day. Service was fine for me. We started our meal with an order of crab cakes, French onion soup, and caesar salad. All three were delicious. The soup in particular was probably the best I've had of its kind; the cheese was not as thick as some other places make it, but was nevertheless delicious; the soup itself is herby and very tasty. The crab cakes were cooked perfectly, with just enough crisp on the outside, and enough crab density on the inside to make a hearty bite. The caesar dressing with the salad was creamy and the leaves themselves were fresh and crunchy. The bread was served with garlic butter and, as usual, came from Village Bakery; in other words, delicious. For entrees, we had the duck, the short rib penne, and the gnocchi. All three were incredible. In particular I liked the mushrooms they added to the pasta; they had the taste of "wild" shrooms but were also cooked in butter. The gnocchi were firm and delicious, the duck cooked just right. The greatness tapered off a little with the dessert; the creme brulee was great, but the apple tart and lemon cake were not as great as the other meals (but still awesome). While everything tasted great, what struck me the most about the food here was that everything was cooked perfectly. Nothing was overcooked or undercooked; every dish had a good bite to it; perfect texture. This was especially true with the gnocchi and the crab cakes. The bread is warm, soft, and great when topped with their fresh goat cheese. We celebrated my good friend's graduation at Mustard Seed. 8 people, and one very tiny restaurant. The host wasn't too friendly as we arrived 30 minutes prior to our reservation. Ambiance was nice, a little loud with all the celebrations going around. Hubs and I shared the artichoke which was delicious. My friend ordered the cheese platter. I'm no fan of cheese but the brie was really good! I highly recommend it. The house bread was soft and it was accompanied with garlic butter spread... yum! For dinner I had the surf and turf cooked medium and hubs had pan seared duck breast. The surf (prawn) was prepared well but the turf (filet mignon) was a little tough although not over cooked. The surf and turf sat on top of a bed of garlic mashed potatoes that was excellent. I, however, much preferred the duck breast.. well glazed and very tender. For dessert we had the Tahitian Vanilla Bean Creme Brulee and the chocolate souffle.. I wasnt impressed by the souffle (it tasted more like cake) but the brulee was delicious. Another member of our party also ordered the brulee but it was not fully cooked so that had to be returned to the kitchen. We also ordered a Syrah, Navarro 2005 and surprisingly I enjoyed it a lot. Both times, the food was only so-so- as in, not any better taste and freshness than other restaurants in this town. I remember that the restaurant has weird hours (closed randomly)--we came once on a Monday for lunch and it was closed. The food: the ingredients are definitely fresh and of excellent quality. The flavors are clean and simple. They make lovely expensive frou-frou sandwiches and salads for lunch. Went there for my moms birthday with the fam the other day. Great ambiance, small enough to feel quaint and special. What seems like a very tastefully converted older house in downtown Davis. The food was excellent. Great presentation, well prepared. Would give good restaurants in LA a run for their money. I like to come here from time to time when I'm into fine dining and the Mustard Seed never fails to deliver. The wine selection is great (though there is a minor corkage fee if you'd like to bring your own) and the food is seasonal and diverse. Be sure to ask for what it is you are ordering though! Out of all the relatively upscale restaurants in Davis, I consider The Mustard Seed to outshine the rest. The past 2 months I have ventured to all the relatively upscale restaurants in Davis and so it is easier for me to compare them. I find that The Mustard Seed excels in both the food, environment, and service. The setting of the restaurant is very intimate with both indoor and outdoor seating that are well decorated. The noise level is low and the dress code is casual. My friend and I tried the carpaccio of beef ($12), gnocchi ($18), and the duck breast ($22). All the dishes were fresh, delicious, and flavorful. They also offer unlimited complimentary bread with goat cheese and olives to go with your meal. I was very impressed with the waiting service. They attended to us in a timely manner, were very friendly, and just plainly excelled in customer service. Word of mouth got around and suddently the secret was out, the fabulous tastes and dishes were turned into a restaurant. This place can be kind of easy to miss; the outside looks like a regular house. Inside is quaint and the patio is nice. This place attracts an older, more established crowd. Salmon carpaccio with lemon dill sauce ($15) Loved it! Very good carpaccio. Shrimp and sun-dried tomato risotto ($24) Pretty good risotto. I've had better, and I've had worse. Crab-stuffed trout ($24) This dish was all right. It's pretty self-explanatory. Service was very friendly throughout my entire meal. Even though dinner was busy, my server made sure to refill my water and make sure I was all right. Overall I was very satisfied (and full). I took a look at the menu online before I came to meet friends and I couldn't wait to have lunch! My biggest challenge was trying to decide what not to eat because I would eat everything on the lunch menu. I eventually settled for a chicken ciabatta with brie and apple. The ciabatta was fresh and the chicken moist. The brie and apple was a tasty and familiar pairing. It was not the most spectactular sandwhich I've ever eaten, but I could appreciate the freshness of all the ingredients. The same could be said of the Tahitian Creme brulee I split with one of my lunch companions. The caramelized sugar crust was the perfect thickness. I secretly wished that I had the desert to myself in my home so I could lick the dish clean. I know TMI. Sorry, I love me some creme brulee. My husband and I ate here at dinner for our anniversary. The restaurant is small but also has a nice outdoor patio. The hostess said that she had allergies so she wouldn't seat us outside. But we had a nice view of the outside from our table. The food was good. The crab cakes were delicious and the garlic mashed potatoes were to die for! The duck was a bit greasy. The prices were a bit expensive, but it is a small place with food you usually can't get elsewhere in Davis. The service was good and the waiter was very friendly. Not sure why this establishment has low reviews. My wife and I celebrated our anniversary there tonight and couldn't have been happier with our choice. It is a cozy spot perfect for celebrating. The server was attentive and told us in detail about the menu items. She took great care of us the whole night. We started with crab cakes and Caesar salad. The cakes were on par with some of the best we've ever had. The Caesar was on point. For entrees we had the duck and the Chilean sea bass. The duck was cooked perfectly with a sweet potato purée that accented the duck. Great dish. If you've read my other reviews you know that Nicks in San Clemente, and Laguna Beach have the best Chilean sea bass on the planet. The Mustard Seeds version was up to the task for a very competent next best. Nick pan sears theirs to give it a nice crunch on the outside. Here it is baked to perfection and then a basil oil drizzle. While it might be higher priced than many restaurants in Davis, in Sacramento it is comparable to all of our finest restaurants and not sticker shock. In fact, the menu had virtually everything we love all in be menu. Definitely coming back real soon. read more

I was really excited to try the Mustard Seed as last time I was in town we hit up Seasons. I liked what they delivered. We started with the Salmon Carpaccio, which was excellent. The orange served as a great balance of acid and the Salmon had a really nice smokey flavor. Which turned out to be the highlight of the meal. I had the rack of lamb. It was good, a little small, didn't wow me, but was cooked to perfection. She had the duck breast, that I wished I would have got. The skin was super crispy and the sauce was sweet enough to cut the richness of the duck. Desserts were OK. Nothing too crazy we had the lava cake which was good, didn't leave me wanting more and the trio of profiteroles which were essentially little ice cream sandwiches but they were a little dry. I had dinner there with my mother-in-law last night. This was a delicious, warm, fresh, happy meal. I started with the mussels, Freddie with a salad. The mussels were well cooked and the sauce was tasty but a little heavy. For my main course I ordered the Escolar in red curry sauce with forbidden black rice. It was very flavorful, especially the combination of the curry sauce and the black rice. I realize that escolar is not my favorite fish but that did not stop me from really enjoying the dish. Freddie had the ribeye steak. I took a small bit home and had it for lunch today. I wish I had ordered that. It was tender, beefy, and was cooked with mushrooms, which I love. For dessert, I had creme brulee. The creme was very creamy and had the right amount of vanilla, but the sugar crust was a bit soft. The one recommendation I would have for the Mustard Seed is to pick a few wines for the by-the-glass list that are a bit off the beaten path, which would allow them to offer better quality without being too expensive. If in Davis, try to eat at the Mustard Seed at least once. read more

After driving around for a good 30 minutes with my poor girlfriend (she was driving) we finally found the location of this ever-so hidden little quaint restaurant. Though the exterior I thought was homely I found the inner decor to be warm and welcoming, even though I didn't think our waitress was (I'll get to that) The food was excellent. For starters we had the Brie and fruit plate which my girlfriend loved. Also we had the crab cakes which were overpriced but still very scrumptious ($16 for 2 cakes). For our entrees we had the ham and cheddar sandwich with the side of tomato bisque and the salmon and aioli sandwich, both of which came with a refreshing side salad with light vinaigrette. Both were once again scrumptious and reasonably priced for a Zagat rated restaurant. Then came the issue of the waitress which both I and my girlfriend found cold and distant, like an angry librarian. Maybe she just broke up with her boyfriend or maybe it was her time of the month, regardless I would have liked a warmer welcome to what would have been a perfectly romantic lunch outing with someone I loved. The first time we ate there, the lamb was over-cooked and the wait time nealry 1 hour between salad and entree on a Wednesday! The next two times were really quite good. However, this last time we didnt even make it in the restaurant. We asked about using our Groupons and sitting at the same table and the Hostess was so rude and hung the phone up when asked this simple question. Today we had lunch at The Mustard Seed. Probably my 3rd visit in the past 15 years.The service was courteous and efficient. Both our drink and water arrived all had PLASTIC straws, which have been banned at sit down restaurants in Davis unless requested by the customer. You'd think this established restaurant would be sensitive to the local codes and the overall environmental destruction that single use plastic causes. I ordered the roasted natural turkey sandwich. They must have copied that off of the package. It was pre-sliced turkey like you would get at Subway or your local Safeway. There were too few pieces of avocado. When I asked the waitress why they used this semi meat as opposed to fresh roasted turkey, she told me to order the chicken sandwich next time. No apologies, no offer to bring something else, no money off the bill. We paid the bill and tipped 20%. I asked for the manager and he or she was on the computer with a technical issue. I called later and still not available. Might I add that the patio is poorly maintained. Dead and dying plants in old plastic Vita gro plastic containers. Ugh! We aren't going back. I will follow up on the plastic straws with Davis. The manager should have taken the time to talk to this customer. read more

I went to The Mustard Seed last night for my birthday dinner with my bf. I was hesitant due to the outside and when you walk in, no one greets you. But after a few minutes we were seated at a table and the waitress got our orders down. The ambiance was cozy and warm, it felt like being at my mother's home but with a restaurant inside. I ordered the gala apple and romaine salad which was good but nothing spectacular. But the bread with a garlic butter-goat cheese mixture was heavenly. I ordered the Duck Breast with Huckleberry sauce and pureed sweet potatoes. The duck was great, especially with the sauce. But the things that I am going to rave about are as follows: my bf's parmesan-crusted chicken, the pureed sweet potatoes, and the eggnog creme brulee. Oh. My. Word. The chicken had this amazing seasoning in the crust and the meat was moist, not dry. The sweet potatoes...just wonderful. The waitress said they were mixed with cream and molasses, cooking experimentation here I come. I need to try and replicate it. And the eggnog creme brulee was, by far, the best creme brulee I've ever had. I was full from dinner but I ate it all because it was THAT delicious. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because the staff seemed rushed and they didn't greet people when they walked in. I think they needed to have 1 or 2 more people working that night. For dinner we had~ Grilled Castroville Globe Artichoke (A bit messy, but the sauce it's marinated in is soooooo good!!!) Baby Arugula with Mission Fig & Belgian Endive (LOVE THE SALAD!) Caesar Salad (My husband LOVES it! He can't recall another place that made it this good) Grilled Rack Chop of Pork (The pork chop was not dry at all considering how thick it was. My only dislike was the BBQ sauce on top of it. It reminded me of tangy sweet-n-sour sauce from a can.) Dry Rubbed Aged Rib Eye Steak (By no means dry at all, cooked medium, but lacked taste! It definitely was not a favorite. We ended up taking it home and making steak sandwiches for lunch the next day.) So, after 2 meals, I'd say this place is okay. The service is excellent and the waitresses very knowledgeable. The food is good, just not sure if the price justifies the food. I've been to Mustard Seed for both lunch and dinner. They have seating both indoors and outdoors. The wait staff is extremely friendly and so is the owner. This place is definitely good place to take a date. The lunch time sandwiches here are absolutely delicious. My favorite is the brie with apples. Believe it or not, but fine dining in posh settings does indeed exist in the college town of Davis. The Mustard Seed is one of these gems. Take a lady friend here and impress her. In interior of the Mustard seed is cozy and intimate with soft lighting. It's a nice and quiet departure from some of the more rowdy scenes of downtown Davis. The Mustard Seed may feel a bit small for some, but hey, I don't think anyone is going to propose to their future spouses here. It's nice, but not that nice. The menu here is constantly changes with the seasons. During my visit I managed to have the crab cakes, smoked salmon carpaccio, the dry-aged rib-eye steak, and a bit of the macadamia crusted butterfish. Everything was superb. These are the most divine crab cakes I have ever had. They were so light, tender and really flavorful. Portions on the main courses were large enough to fill you and everything was plated elegantly (if you care). So, high dining comes at a high price, yeah? Yeah. Everything I had came down to just under 80 dollars. Not bad, but I knew what I was win for and I was thoroughly pleased with the food. Love that there is some place in town where you can get duck, lamb, scallops, a nice steak, etc. Although it is not the same as a 5 star place in SF, its 5 star for Davis. We were simply looking for a delectable treat to eat in the evening and their menu looked inviting. As we entered we met one of the owners, Paul Bergman, attending the front door around 6pm or so. Although the restaurant was closing, they opened their doors for our party of four. We had no idea that we were of the last of the guests and closing the place! What a delight - the desserts were amazing and even though we would ask for something more they took time to accommodate us and spent time with us sharing stories and bringing a good laugh. We felt welcomed to their table (almost as if we were part of their family). The restaurant is a charming little place with a patio in the rear. Delectable food and cozy, warm environment! Unbeknown to them, they would be the restaurant which we decided to host a party for 40 people later on in the year. The Mustard Seed continued to meet and exceed our expectations and yes our guests were truly impressed. The event was festive and celebratory and the food and wine helped us enjoy and linger in that moment for just the right amount of time. Guests from outside of the area stayed nearby following the celebration and we continued the following day with a walk in the University of California DAVIS Arboretum.. it was amazing! A great restaurant to enjoy a nice meal in Davis. The Mustard Seed had once been considered fine dining but I would say that the restaurant is now a shade lower. If you are from Davis, I would say Mustard Seed is about the same level as Village Bakery (the restaurant). I've tried both breakfast and dinner. Breakfast is pretty decent ranging from $8-12 maximum. The dishes were simple with limited meat choices. The red potatoes were cooked perfectly. Breakfast portions was just the right amount. It was a sunday morning and there no more than 2 couples in the restaurant. Dinner was great. There is a wide range of choices that are nicely prepared. I ordered the gnocchi and the flavor was spot on. Another in my party ordered a steak and it was pretty big. so be prepared to either share or take some home. Wine selection is somewhat limited. I would recommend mustard seed if you are looking for a quiet place to dine with your date. The service is friendly and the restaurant represents the quiet coziness of Davis with food that will not disappoint. read more

I finally have the time to update my review on this establishment! I know it's been awhile, but it's better late than never. Besides, the fact that I can still remember my meal from 4 months ago is a good indicator that I had a great meal. Shortly after writing my initial review, I received an email from the restaurant owner, and his words compelled me to give his restaurant another opportunity. I made an online reservation once again, and I must admit that I was a little afraid I was going to go through the same experience when we got there. However, this time they had a lovely table for us on the outside patio. Being August, it was the perfect weather to enjoy dinner and drinks. For starters, I had the dungeness crab cakes. It had a bit more vinaigrette than I would have liked, but the crab cake itself was light, fluffy, and buttery. I convinced my crab-fearing husband to take a bite, and he was pleasantly surprised. I had to keep them away from him. :) For the main course, I had a seafood stew-like dish (it's not on the menu anymore since it was a seasonal dish). The red sauce was tangy and a yummy accompaniment to the prawns and fish. My husband had scallops with mashed potatoes. I shouldn't have stolen a scallop because once I did, I wanted to polish off his entire plate as well. The scallops were so sweet and perfectly cooked. Don't get me started on the mashed potatoes. For dessert (as if I needed to eat anymore since I was stuffed to to the gills), we each had 3 profiteroles stuffed with French vanilla ice cream. We saw another table get this dessert, and I just had to try it. The profiteroles were nice and puffy, and the ice cream was very creamy. Every time I've dined here my guests have loved the food and cozy ambiance. The food is always fabulous! THE appetizers. SO good. We had the pate and the crab cakes and they were amazing. The entrees were good, but not the highlight of the night. ...the profiteroles. You cannot leave without trying them. They were decadent. DECADENT. This place is on the pricey side, but has an ambiance that balances homey and fancy. You feel like you are 'going out,' but by no means feel under-dressed in jeans and a nice top. The wait staff was pleasant and attentive even though I visited on a busy night. I had a Navarro vineyard Chardonnay that I wasn't a fan of (but that is no fault of the restaurant). By far one of my favorite places if not my favorite to eat at in the area. Great for a special event or evening to celebrate. The wait staff is always professional, upbeat, and attentive. The food is always beautifully prepared and ridiculously tasty. Everything is made right there in their kitchen. I always feel like I'm in a cabin in Carmel whenever I'm there. I've always sat at the table directly across from the swinging kitchen door and you can tell a lot about a place by the looks of their kitchen. It is always clean and well cared for by the looks of it. We started our meal with a house salad and the tomato bisque with puff pastry. They were both very tasty and fresh. For our main course we had the gnocchi and the pork. Both were delicious. We didn't order dessert only because we were so incredibly full. My husband always gets lemonade here since he says its so tasty. I had water. Our bill with tax and tip was a little over $90. Highly recommend! read more
