Ash here, speaking not only as a long time customer but as a former employee, you won't find a more welcoming environment for any kind of hobby or obsession, whether you like comics, novels, movies, trading card games, video games, heck they even have giant arcade machines! They also host musical events and charity events for the community, Oxnard simply would not be the place it is without these guys. Stopped by the Mystery Shop today and was pleasantly surprised to see a big selection of products from comics and graphic novels to trading cards and various toys. The last time I came a few months back, there seemed to be ongoing reorganization so I wasn't able to see everything they had to offer. While I could see it being a nice place to play for some especially with it boasting many weekly events for a variety of card games (Lorcana, Yu-Gi-Oh, Magic, Pokemon), I felt the sealed and single selections were both pricey and less plentiful compared to what I have seen at other shops. Fun horror oriented store in downtown Ventura. It is hard to miss since their decor and signs are fun and they'll get your attention. Got ours! The store is pretty big, it has a bit of everything - collectibles, games, t-shirts, video games, DVD-s, etc. It is fun to browse since they have more funky decor inside. They also have a mini arcade area, so that makes the shop more fun. My husband got some DVD-s here for very reasonable prices, the selection was great! This establishment is fairly small, but super cute. There was a sign reading that they are moving to another location. I believe it said in Oxnard. The boy still had a lot of fun here, we didn't purchase anything, but the boy played the claw machine and had fun looking around. read more

The Mystery Shop popped up when I was looking for a comic book store. They had less than an average selection of comics, I was looking for more options. Looks like it's a place where people game and compete more so than selling comics. I don't' know how much they were selling the new or back issues. I didn't stay long. Not Sure How This Place Has 5 Stars--Here's My Honest Take I genuinely don't understand how this place is rated so highly. It feels like the reviews must be from friends or loyal regulars, because what I experienced doesn't match the glowing praise. Let me explain I've been here a few times, a couple of times back when it was called Endgame when it was in Ventura and once under its current name, The Mystery Shop in Oxnard. When it was Endgame, it was actually a cool little spot. The shop was clean, organized, and carried a wide variety of anime figures, manga, comics, and collectibles. It felt organized and curated, which I imagine had a lot to do with different ownership at the time. Fast forward to now, The Mystery Shop, I don't know what to make of it. The store feels cluttered and dirty. When you walk in, the tables are cluttered with random products, and the people at the front are eating while awkwardly watching you enter. Their attempts at engagement felt forced, like they didn't really know what to say or how to greet customers. Even though they market themselves as a collectibles shop, very little in the store actually feels collectible. To be blunt, it gave off the vibe of a place where yard sale leftovers and thrift store rejects go to die. It sounds harsh, but that's the impression I got. To make things more confusing, I asked about the price of an item behind the counter, only to be told it wasn't for sale. Why put something on display behind the register if you're not selling it? It felt disorganized and confusing. They do have an arcade machine, but it wasn't even turned on. They offered to power it up if I wanted to play, but why not just have it running and being part of the atmosphere? It would help the space feel more alive and inviting. The main reason I stopped by was to sell off my remaining cards since I don't play anymore. I brought in a binder with cards estimated around $1,100 in value, everything in near mint condition, most cards valued over $5, and a couple over $100. They offered me store credit first, which they seemed to be pushing pretty hard, almost like they couldn't afford to offer cash. But honestly, there's nothing in the shop that made store credit feel worthwhile. After I insisted on a cash offer, they came back with $220 making it seem like my entire binder was nothing but bulk. Even my friend who came with me, who knows nothing about the hobby, said, "That's all?" Just as shocked as I was. And speaking of my friend, he had to use the restroom while we were there and after walking in, he immediately walked back out genuinely disgusted, saying he didn't even feel safe enough to stand in there. He described it as looking like a nuclear disaster. I thought he was overexaggerating, so I had to take a look, and he was right! Feces splattered all around the toilet, a yellow hue on the seat and rim, pee stains all around, this thick dust or grime along the entirety of the toilet, it definitely hadn't been cleaned in months. This alone says a lot about the shop's attention to cleanliness and care. At the end of the day, appearance and customer satisfaction matter. I couldn't buy anything (because the one item I wanted wasn't for sale), didn't sell anything (because their buy rates were incredibly low), couldn't enjoy the arcade (because it wasn't turned on), and my friend couldn't even use the restroom (because it was so gross he felt he'd catch E.coli in there). When you walk into a collectibles shop, you expect a clean, organized, and welcoming space. This was anything but. Overall, it was not a pleasant experience. Sure, they may have a hidden gem tucked away that someone might stumble upon, but this definitely isn't a spot I'd visit regularly. It's more of a "one-and-done" kind of place. Once you've seen it, you probably won't feel the urge to come back anytime soon. read more

The Mystery Shop - Just got my FINAL FANTASY fix at The Mystery Shop - Hobby Shops Near Me - Oxnard, California

I've been here many times and today the store was under renovation. Super nice owner and I have found things to buy in past visits here. Yes, I get it, it's a kind of humble not gigantic monstrous store... But if you look closely then maybe you will see what I see, tons and tons of inventory with a few things that I can't do without purchasing. I imagine the next time I visit the area here thier renovation Will be finished and we will see what improvements they have deployed. It might seem a little generous or gratuitous to give five stars, however... I think it's increasingly rare to find specialty businesses like this. We were here for $1 comics, and found a whole bunch! The guy who works here is friendly, helpful and enthusiastic. Ask him about his Ghostbusters stuff! Rad little shop that has a hole-in-the-wall look at first glance until you walk inside and it's truly a cool looking shop. Cool layout, the dude at the helm was super chill and helpful, and the prices on their back issues weren't stupidly priced. Ended up buying $45 worth of wall books. Their inventory has a bit of everything. I was on a timeframe so I didn't get to spend as much time as I'd like browsing around. But my few minutes of exploring a Ventura shop was well spent here. Whenever I visit an area I haven't been to before, I always try to scout out a local games store that carries magic cards - if I can find a single or two I've been needing for my commander decks, it's an easy way to attribute a memory of a place to a card that I'll play. Being reminded of the places I've been while playing magic with friends is one of my favorite things to do while I play. Erin was working here when we stopped by. It's hard to describe the experience other than 'wonderful'. I walked out with a DOM Karn, the great creator which I needed for, coincidentally, my Karn, Silver Golem EDH Deck. Whenever I play this card, I'll be reminded of the conversation I had with Erin, how she showered me and my girlfriend with care, and how we learned about her & her time in Ventura. I'll be reminded of her small & cozy shop next to a charming little dive bar... I'll be reminded of how much of a nice time I've had in Ventura. Do yourself a favor and stop by their store to say hello. They've got modern and Standard events, with commander coming soon.
