I decided to support a local business and ordered a custom cake for my father-in-law's birthday. After searching for bakeries in Astoria, I chose The Naked Lemon based on reviews and their reputation for carrot cake, which is his favorite. Ordering online was simple, and I scheduled a Friday pickup for a Sunday celebration. However, when my husband arrived (slightly late due to other errands), we discovered the cake had already been placed in the display case to be sold by the slice--even though it had been prepaid ($70). We never received a call to confirm pickup. He watched as the cake was removed from the display and placed into a box that was clearly too small. Instead of correcting this, the employee covered it with saran wrap and sent it with him that way. The cake itself looked very poorly finished, with large areas missing frosting. When my husband asked about it, the response he received was dismissive and unhelpful. After he left, I called the bakery myself and was met with even worse customer service. I was told I should have "done more research" and that this is simply how their cakes look. When I expressed concern about freshness (since the cake was for Sunday and not properly boxed), I was told I should have ordered it closer to the date. I explained our schedule, but the response was essentially, "I don't know what to tell you," and I was refused any refund or solution. The interaction felt rude and dismissive, with no concern for customer satisfaction. Unfortunately, the cake itself was just as disappointing. When we cut into it, it crumbled apart. It lacked flavor, had chunks that seemed like uncooked flour, and the little frosting it did have was bland and uneven. Overall, it seemed rushed and poorly made. As a small business owner myself, I understand things don't always go perfectly--but the lack of care in both product quality and customer service was extremely disappointing. Honestly...what I had wasn't all that great. Nothing to race about here. I got a lemon blueberry scone, chocolate chip cookie, and a black coffee. Coffee was fresh and extremely hot, cookie was very large, and the scone was a cross between dry and moist. I liked the flavor of the coffee, whatever blend they use its bold and strong. The size of their cookies is awesome and it was crunchier on the outside but the middle was nice and chewy. I'd have to say that the cross of dry and moist would have equate to almost a stale texture. Sadly it barely had flavor and even the glaze did not supplement for the lack of taste. We went around 10a on a Monday morning and so I didn't feel like getting macarons or their cheesecake (which look phenomenal). I can only comment on the cookie's as in Chocolate chip and peanut butter. They were closed in about 45min and only had 4 pink macaroons and a whole bunch of molasses, peanut butter and chips chip cookies. I got em all ! Well not the whole bin but one of each. They all lacked anything interesting or as my fine lady said "anything in flavor". Yeah they were big and $6.50 each but that's about it. They were absolutely bland, really crunchy on the outside and semi moist on the inside yet lacked any flavor. Def made with low quality chocolate chips as well as peanut butter. Absolutely fabulous! I needed a variety of cakes and desserts for my great-nieces graduation party and this bakery was amazing. I have probably tasted 200 carrot cakes in my lifetime and this by far exceeded anything I have ever had. Aleeshs' carrot cake is absolutely delicious. And everything was so beautifully decorated in Astoria high school colors. Her macaroons are always worth my drive from Gearhart! So delicious! I was the star of the graduation party. read more

I also got a macaron, ad someone who makes them I would 100% recommend sifting your almond flour because that will make the mouthfeel more ideal. I heard about this place before coming to Astoria and had to stop once I saw it in town! There's parallel parking in front of the bakery, really all down the street TNL is on & it's free! Me and my husband came late Thursday afternoon and we were the only ones in so plenty of time to be indecisive - Lemon and maple macaroons: delicious. This was my macaroon cherry popper and it didn't miss. Both were soft and easy to bite. The outer part and the filling had sooo much flavor, and it wasn't sweet which I loved. I would def. Pick the lemon over the maple but it was still delicious! - Lemon blueberry scone: The scone was good. It wasn't too dry and the texture was on point. The piece I had had a decent amount of blueberries. However, the icing was too sweet for me :( - Chocolate chip cookie: I put it in the microwave about 10 secs and it was *chefs kiss*. 10/10 easy. - Carrot cake: the cake itself was moist and had great flavor. The icing, I just could put my finger on it if it had lemon or lime in it? Just I wasn't a fan of the icing on the carrot cake. I 100% recommend stopping in if you're in Astoria! read more

SO SO GOOD! Came here on a rec from foodiesnitch, a food blogger in portland. The location has updated from the one listed here which we found out when we arrived. We grabbed some tea to go, and tried one of each of their lovely holiday flavored macarons. Let me tell you these are hands down the best i've ever had. Stopped by after passing while in Astoria for the weekend. My husband had one of the giant choc chip cookies which he said was good (not great) I picked a rose macaron (I'm a huge macaron fan). The appearance of the macaron (not flat and smooth, but very knobbly), should have been a red flag but I gave it the benefit of doubt considering they are a bakery and are charging $2.99 per macaron... Pleasantly surprised. We were walking and window shopping in Astoria this last weekend and always lured in by bakeries. There was not much to choose from - blueberry scones, giant snickerdoodles, two kinds of cupcakes and two choices of French Macaroons. I was a little disappointed at the selection and headed out to use the restroom. Upon my return my bf was purchasing one each of the Macaroons... The Best French Macaroons I have ever had!!! They looked good and tasted even better! I had given up on these colorful macaroons as I was always disappointed with hard too sweet no flavor, too fluffy cream etc for something that is supposedly a French cuisine treat. We were in Astoria for the weekend for our wedding anniversary. As a surprise for my husband I wanted to have a small cake delivered to our hotel. Rather than purchase and travel with something from Portland, I decided to use this local bakery. I submitted my request online, had a phone conversation with Aleesha, sent her an email with photos of our groom's cake and our program so she could see the color scheme, and it was all booked and seemed great. We did discuss that the design didn't need to be the exact swirl but a representation was fine. Friday night when the cake arrived I was immediately unhappy. The colors of the cake were very pretty, but not the primary red and blue of our wedding colors. There were also flowers/rosettes all along the top and the base of the cake in white that just looked out of place with the modern, sleek design of the sides. This white frosting is supposedly a swiss meringue buttercream but it tasted like shortening to us. It was not tasty. The chocolate cake with peanut butter buttercream filling was ok. The cake was moist and there was a subtle peanut butter flavor, but it wasn't flavorful enough to make us enjoy it and that swiss miss on top just ruined the flavor. We cut one small piece, didn't finish it, and called it good. The box that this small cake came in wasn't as tall as the cake so if we had wanted to travel with it home, we would have had to cut it up to make it fit in order to shut the box. For a tiered wedding cake I would expect that but not for a small cake. We left it for the hotel staff because it was a complete miss for us. A $50 miss. I did email the owner Friday night with my disappointment and just this afternoon received a response which included this: "My cakes are one of a kind and made with simple ingredients-- Including a real Swiss meringue buttercream frosting made with real butter and not shortening. These wholesome cakes may not be exactly what bakeries in Portland produce but that's exactly why they are a success here." This sounds a bit to me like I'm being told my Portland city taste buds can't appreciate their Astoria charm. I've been in the wedding and event industry for over 14 years and have had a lot of cake. I have also worked in customer service for over 20 years. My response to a customer in this situation, and I would have endeavored to deliver that response before they left town in 2 days, would have been a simple, "I am so sorry you didn't enjoy our cake. If you're still here I'd love to have you stop at our bakery for a complimentary treat so we can try to show you our baked goods are delicious. If we've missed you already or you can't make it over, I'd be happy to refund you 15% as a good faith gesture in the hope that you'll try our bakery another time." Not having tried the retail shop, I would have been inclined to do so but after the email response I received I feel like the customer service part of this business just isn't there so I'd rather give my business to someone else. Disappointing, as it was the only thing of our 3 day weekend celebration that didn't hit the mark. My advice - make sure to try their retail shop several times or make sure you get a tasting before ordering anything for a special occasion. read more

I contacted Aneesha on Wednesday from NY with an urgent request to bake a cake for an old camp friend who was just placed in hospice care. I needed a cake that would remind her of her days at camp over 40 years ago and to know that her friends were all sending love. I sent Aneesha a scan of a camp logo and some heartfelt words of love for our friend. By Friday morning she had this cake whipped up and ready for her husband to pick up for her. She and her team were so dedicated to making it just right. If it tastes as good as it looks, I will be sure to visit this bakery if I do ever make it to Astoria. Thanks Aneesha and staff! read more

I picked the safest one, a vanilla cupcake with a vanilla frosting and sprinkles. Not only was it dry but it was hard like it was days old. We purchased a slice of lemon marionberry cheesecake, chocolate chip cookies and two macarons, one pumpkin spice and one birthday cake flavored. Nothing disappointed. The cheesecake was dense and creamy with bright lemon flavor and deliciously tart berries. The macarons weren't just pretty, they nailed their namesake flavors.
