I usually enjoy shopping at this nursery. In fact, I drive over 45 minutes to come here because I've always had good experiences. Unfortunately, my last visit was very disappointing. First, I was overcharged by almost $300. I didn't realize it until I was about 30 minutes away. After several phone calls, they agreed to refund the overcharge, but this should have been caught before I left. I was told the price check hadn't been cleared properly. Second, one of the bags of compost I purchased was full of mold and had turned into a mushy, unusable mess. I expect better quality control and more attention at checkout, especially from a business I go out of my way to support. I hope they address these issues because I'd like to continue shopping here. read more

Shoal Creek Nursery used to be a great place to find plants but what made it special WAS great service. The SERVICE NOW IS VERY POOR. On busy times no one answers the phone no matter which selection you make. On at Tues morning finally I did get someone to answer the phone. They were not able to answer a simple question so they put me on hold to go ask someone else. They got back on the line , gave me an incomplete quick response and never ended the call. Then began talking to another customer about an order while I was still holding on. Rude and disrespectful. The poor service does not warrant their higher prices compared to Home Depot or Lowe's. I think that perhaps Shoal Creek seems more interested in landscape companies with big orders, not your regular homeowner. My experience at the Arbor walk Home Depot was so pleasant. Like this place, not sure why its getting bad reviews :/ We went to check out some plants for our place, this was place lovely - gorgeous with the flowers blooming in February. Its spacious but not super big so quite navigable. The space has nice decor and architecture, I actually enjoy browsing and looking around. Staffs are sparse so you gotta go and find them to ask if you need anything. Prices are generally high. read more

The people at this nursery are absolutely fabulous, kind, wonderful souls, and they need a review, because I have never had such a phenomenal experience! It is prom season, and the only corsage options I could find locally were boring flower options, roses, orchid... Nothing that smells crazy good or was really fabulous, or unusual. Now, before you bite my head off and say that there are tons of floral shops that do have items like this. I'd also like to say, that I didn't think about a corsage until the week of. So... I was on my own. I got the bright idea that we could make our own corsage with some awesome smelling flowers, if only I could find a gardenia plant that was in bloom. Monday, I started calling all of the garden places I could think of, Lowe's, Home Depot, and then, even though I thought it was gonna be far more expensive... an actual nursery. These kind souls took the time to go out and see which plants might have had blooms, that were good enough for a corsage. Then, they even called me back shortly after we hung up to find out which day prom was, and tell me that the bloom certainly wouldn't last until Saturday night. They put up with my Tom foolery again when I called Saturday morning, and sent out one of their lovely green thumbs to AGAIN find us a perfect plant, and HE suggested backing it with some of their profusely growing and glorious smelling jasmine. AND the gardenia? A measly 24$ (them's warehouse garden prices right there) Anyway... The corsages were great smelling and gorgeous. And the plant they so lovingly chose for us was covered in buds. It is blooming, and fragrant, and beautiful tonight, and it reminded me that I had not yet written a review of these wonderful wonderful people who made our day so special. Thanks guys! read more

Normally SCN has excellent customer service but that was not the case recently. I've visited last week asked for a particular item, the owner said he would get it. This week tired calling, no answer so I stopped by to check on the availability. No information was available about if it was ordered, staff couldn't locate it and instead of actually requesting it I was redirected to the website to order although I wasted time & money to drive there to inquire. That's poor customer service with a poor attitude. Doesn't seem like they value my patronage even though I'm requesting a small item I've spent plenty at SCN this year and over the years. I tried to bring a plant back to Shoalcreek Nursery that died in a week. It was a crossvine. The guy at the counter was very rude and said I obviously hadn't watered it (which I had). He offered to let me have a new one for half price. Exactly why would I buy another one that was obviously sick? Won't be going back and I have spent a mint of money there... read more

I recently purchased a bougainvillea in a one gallon container. After getting at home to replant it, I pulled it out of the pot and found out it was just a 4 inch pot in a 1 gallon bucket with compost around it. I paid $20 for a 4 inch plant. I feel completely ripped off. read more

We recently built a planter and given it's late in the season, wanted some annuals to enjoy. We visited a few different nurseries around Austin and finally made our purchases here. The annuals were $2 each and looked healthy. We wish there was more variety but it is mid-August after all. This nursery was well organized, we got all our questions answered, people were not necessarily maintaining 6 feet distance but were wearing masks. read more

I've only bought soil and mulch here but they have reasonably priced products great for organic gardening. They'll load your car for you, too. I got some Texas cedar mulch (not great for my allergies but great to repel pests) and some garden soil for my garden plot that has beneficial microbes. They also have a good selection of pots and plants. Parking fills up fast, but I found parking in the neighborhood. read more

This is a beautiful nursery with a great variety of plants and especially impressed with their pottery selection. I'd been to every nursery around including the large pottery store out in Dripping and found what I was looking for at Shoal Creek. I was fortunate to have Sam close by and he quickly loaded up my very large and very heavy pots and pushed them to the checkout. At checkout there was a lovely lady with 45 years of gardening experience and she gave me some helpful hints. I believe her name was Ann and she was super helpful. The next day I came back to get 2 more large pots and plants, potting soil, etc. Two guys loaded my truck but not in a very protective way for the pots so I tried myself to move a large bag of potting soil to buffer things but it was stuck. I kindly asked "Marco" if he could just help me with that one bag. He threw a broom he was holding, came over to my truck and looked at it and walked away. I could not have been any kinder toward him when I asked so I have no idea why he behaved that way. I try to give people grace for possibly having a bad day but this behavior was inexcusable, childlike and completely uncalled for. Finally after waiting another 15 minutes to try and find help, Sam once again jumped in and took care of the situation. I would have loved to have given this nursery a 5 star but two things I would recommend to the manager. Do not have Marco dealing with customers, and secondly have kind people available to help with heavy pots, potting soil, trees etc. Especially on a weekend when the place is so busy you can hardly find a parking spot. Oh and I have a third recommendation, give Sam a raise. He is a gentle giant that just gets the job done with zero complaining! read more

Super friendly staff and a lot of fun plants, particularly if you are planning for sprucing up your outdoors. For example, there were some gorgeous purple Passion flower vines (that I have been looking everywhere for) and a good selection of herbs and sedums. The cons are that the houseplant selection seemed pretty small. Super bonus right now are there are a few that seem housed over towards perennials like really nice 4 inch pot spider plants and 4 inch purple oxalis for $2!!!! Prices seem pretty standard for small nurseries although there were a couple things that actually were cheaper than big box stores! read more

We bought three Blue Plumbagos from Shoal Creek nursery and realized we need a fourth so we bought another one which you see on the far left here. The three that we originally bought bloomed with white flowers so we dug them up and brought them back and exchange them for the three little runts on the right that you see here. It was annoying that they sold us the wrong product in the first place, but for $25 each for a 3 gallon plant, I expect a 3 gallon plant. The root ball in these plants was barely a quart, so they sold us 3 gallons of soil with tiny little plants. I guess they can get away with inflating their prices, and selling inferior products, because of where they are located, but I will be bringing my business somewhere else. read more

Saturday, November 23rd my friend and I were plant window-shopping. We had already been to a few places, checking out the selection and comparing prices. Shoal Creek Nursery came up on Maps, so we thought we'd swing by. We arrived at 4:58 and parked near the nursery entrance. My friend noticed that the employees were staring, so she asked if I knew what time they closed. Maps does a good job of mentioning "closing soon" If it's within the hour, but for whatever reason, today was not the case, as they would be closing at 5:30. The nursery didn't look huge, so we decided to go in, because we had an idea of the plants we were looking to compare and would be quick. An older women, late 60s/ early 70s with shoulder-length white and grey hair stood in the entryway, a young man maybe late 20s sat behind the counter, and a young woman with long, dark hair late 20s/ early 30s stood on the other side of the entryway; all looking disgruntled by our arrival and in no way welcoming or cordial. The young woman loudly expressed after we passed them in the doorway, "I don't see how people don't understand that it's rude to come to a business thirty minutes before they close!" The other employees in agreement. Not whispering; not talking amongst themselves, but intentionally speaking loud enough for us to hear. I worked in retail for 14 years, so I would understand if it were a restaurant, clothing store, even a grocery store, where the customers could somehow make a mess, disorganize what's been cleaned or prepped already, but it's a plant nursery. What did she think we were going to do to disrupt their closing procedures? They were all standing around at the counter the whole thirty minutes we were there. If there was work to be done in order for them to go home, we weren't keeping them from it. The staff was rude, so we definitely weren't going to buy anything while they were on duty. I don't know if they get credit for making a sale. We found several lovely plants and figures between the two of us, that we were interested in purchasing. There were a hand-full of other groups there, so it's also not as though we were keeping them after hours. We left at 5:32. We'll try again, but if any of those employees are there, we won't buy from them. read more

I love plants. I have grown even more in love with them since being quarantined at home. They do so much to your space and make you feel so much more calm and peaceful. I love going to Nursery's because I always learn of a new plant that I never even knew existed. Here's my thoughts on the Shoal Creek Nursery: Pros: - Everyone is required to wear masks (this is during COVID) - There are a TON of options - House plants/Succulents/Outdoor plants/Vegetable plants/Flowers/ETC - They sell pots/soil/pot holders/and so much more that you could ever need to start your indoor or outdoor garden Cons: - Parking lot isn't very big - we went on a Sunday at 1PM during Covid and there was only 1 spot left (Lucky me) - Customer service is NONEXISTENT - we did not once come into contact w/an employee until it was time to check out - I still have no idea what plants I got or how to care for them but luckily I can just google it. - No social distancing happening in the lines but I guess since everyone had masks on it was OK? Overall, this place is OK. The fact that the customer service sucks, is enough for me to never go back honestly. BUTTTT..... I do love plants.... so we will see if I return ;) read more

Staff is neither knowledgable nor courteous. You would think that in their peak season as we move into spring when everyone has the bug to garden, they would have figured out how to operate efficiently - moving customers and product through the checkout process quickly. Think again! To me, this indicates very poor management - it starts at the top! And perhaps when 10 customers are waiting line with full carts, that may not be the BEST time to launch into telling the customer at the register all about the rewards program and then painstakingly repeat the spelling of their name 5 times as the cashier attempts to sign them up....again while at least 10 customers are waiting in line!!!!! Earlier today, I shopped at Hill Country Water Gardens in Cedar Park. OMG, what a pleasant experience. At least 4 people asked if they could help me, one literally ran to get my cart and then another insisted on helping me load my purchases. Perahps SCN should take a page from their playbook. SCN needs a management consultant and quickly! read more

Went here to get flowers for my wedding - they had the BEST selection and such reasonable prices. I didn't want to spend thousands on a florist, I went here and spent less than $500 and got flowers for my entire wedding!! (I did have a florist do bouquets) read more

I'm never spending my money here again--well, maybe I'll buy a terracotta pot or something like that in the future...they just happen to be the largest nursery closest to my home. Every time I go here nobody can help you with anything regarding plant care or products. I think they have like 1-2 people that actually know a thing or two about plants but they work in an office hidden until somebody actually demands answers. The work environment is clearly toxic as I always hear the employees complaining about it. Whether it's true or not, it shows in its customer service. I was asking for advice before purchasing several items to make my soil mixture if what I had was correct to which one employee said, "looks right. I mean the best way to learn is to kill a bunch of plants!" I went home and researched the products I got and realized if I would have followed through I would have killed them! Why won't you just say you don't know? Another incident was when I went to purchase sphagnum peat moss...I asked if what I was purchasing was normal at $35 (3.8 cu) to which I was told "yes". I was so pissed when I realized I could have purchased the same amount for $12 elsewhere. I would have appreciated being told why this moss was so much more expensive. This place is just horrible. I've returned all my stuff and purchase elsewhere. If you're new or if you're going to have questions, don't go here. If you're looking for a plant or two and know exactly what you want and they have it, fine...they're also way more expensive than other nurseries. I'd rather spend my money where I know the employees are at least caring for the plants properly before I take it home. read more

Not impressed... newer gardener and after visiting another nursery that was amazing, stopped in Shoal Creek one afternoon during the week to pick up a few items. Staff was uninterested in helping. When I asked where certain type of plants were located the staff member pointed behind me and walked away. After searching for 20 min, and not finding them, another staff member told me they didn't have what I was looking for. Found another plant and asked about sun tolerance. Staff member said she wasn't really sure and shrugged her shoulders. I get that customer service is hard. I get that some days shops are busy and it is hard to help everyone. I don't get basic service not being a priority. Have had several successful trips to other nurseries around town so will skip Shoal Creek and let them have one less customer to help. read more

Since April 6ht this year in my case. NEVER answers phone. NEVER. Put you through all the prompts then say so busy they will not/ cannot take calls and do not allow messages and hangs up. (option 3) I ordered to be drop shipped to them from a major vendor MONROVIA. I live 35 miles away. My wife went there to inquire. So busy they just point to a table (when you DO get a body to talk to) and say if it's here it's over there. Sheesh. Don't answer phone, cannot leave VM messages, and get treated like a ghost when you visit. NOT A FAN and as a 1st time-customer won't ever be back. read more

Great products. Very convenient to my neighborhood. It's also a peaceful place, with fountains and lush greenery. I prefer to support local businesses, for the obvious reasons especially in this pandemic. But I ALWAYS think twice before I go because not only do they not have basic customer service, they have aggressively indignant staff --- if you can find anyone. When you do, they make no attempt to hide their contempt that you're bothering them. It's insulting and makes me want to respond in kind. I don't, but my first stop from now on will be Sledd Nursery. Beautiful nursery. The plants are healthy and well sourced and taken care of. Organization of content is logical and makes shopping easier. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I had been looking for Texas Mountain Laurel and they had an excellent selection. And if all that wasn't good enough, their prices for comparable plants at Lowe's was better. read more

All she could do was say look outside I don't know. Realizing there's no one else that works here that could help me. I went back inside to ask her again if somebody could check inventory. She asked if I saw any. I said no cause I didn't walk far enough And was not exactly sure where to go. So then she decided to say no we don't have any. Really? I've been going here on and off for years, and somehow the place usually ends up disappointing me. The selection of things native to Austin and surrounding is good, and they do a good job of keeping things that will grow in our hot summers in stock. In that regard it is a good place. I've noticed that lately their prices have gotten a bit more affordable, because they used to be WAY overpriced, but I still don't buy pots or planters from them. Because, yikes. But the customer service has always been the pits.( Especially inside, the outside guys can be pretty nice.) I mean, the guys at Lowe's remember me and we chat. The folks at Shoal Creek, especially at check out, they always make me feel as if I have inconvenienced them, and somehow, they always end up overcharging for something. When I point out maybe they should adjust their signage to be a bit more clear, just a shrug and "do you want it or not". They never offer a way to carry stuff out, they rarely say thank you. I mean, seriously. I spend a lot on plants, would be nice to have a pleasant conversation just once. Shoal creek could be SO GOOD if they just had staff that gave a crap about service and being friendly. Gorgeous plants. Amazing selection. Feels very safe because everything is out in the open. Great staff. Great prices. I would be here every weekend if my boyfriend let me...he seems to think I have "too many plants"...is that even possible?!
