We went to the Nickel in December and had a fairly negative experience. The owner of the restaurant invited us back for a do-over, which we enjoyed immensely last night. The food and service were GREATLY improved. Standouts--the anchovies in the Caesar Salad, the scallops and the steak. Our server was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. The only reason this doesn't have 5 stars is we had to wait almost 10 minutes after being seated for a server to arrive and that was after asking for one. It was not busy. However once he arrived it was excellent! I could have made a meal out of the jalapeño cheddar bread! Locally sourced in Golden. Our NY steaks were well prepared. A bit heavy on the Worcestershire in the sauce but tasty. We ordered green beans and our server advised us of a high bacon content , which we appreciated, and changed our side order. The bar makes the absolute BEST handcrafted manhattan. I will stay at the hotel again just so I can enjoy another! read more

The ambiance was very nice and they had a table waiting for our party of five. Unfortunately it was down hill from there, very pricey and small portions, everything a la carte including bread. All in our party were disappointed in our entrees. I sent mine back as the chef dumped the salt shaker on my three small prawns. Best Restaurant in Denver. The new Nickel has something for everyone - cool setting in a great historic and newly renovated hotel. We love to meet friends for drinks and the amazing charcuterie plates but its a great place to host a lunch meeting or a special dinner event. Ok, I haven't eaten anywhere quite like this, and that's a good thing! Not only was dinner excellent, the atmosphere was chic and clean and the location is spot on. This was a business dinner but enjoyed sharing off the charcuterie menu. I couldn't tell you what the hell was on the platter besides prosciutto and various other meats and goat cheeses but it was all damn tasty! Best of all was the entree, I had the wagyu coulette (sp?) which is basically the best damn steak I've ever had! It basically melted in my mouth! If I'm ever in Denver again I'll make a trip back for sure! read more

The food is out of this world!!! We had the Colorado Bass and the Quail, paired with brussels sprouts and kale as side dishes, and I have no words to describe how delicious this food was. The atmosphere was nice. The food was good-but there were some disappointments. Rubbery scallops, too much and not very good bread with 1/2 chicken entree. Having arrived earlier in the day on a 4 hour flight from Boston, and spending the rest of the day in meetings, I was anxious to both have a good meal and relax. The Nickle delivered on both counts. After being seated, our server Dustin stopped by the table to take drink orders and answer any questions about the menu. Clearly, he not only knew the menu but had actually tasted most of the dishes on the list. To suggest he was knowledgeable about the food is an understatement. He not only knew the various items on the menu and the specials, but was familiar with the origins and profiles of each of the charcuterie. Impressive. Likewise, the GM knew the wine list and after a bit of discussion offered us something that had not made it onto the list yet. This is the level of service you expect to find at an established restaurant in NYC and frankly was not what I was expecting at one that had just opened a few weeks before. Needless to say, the food that followed was up to the same high standards. The portions were sane, the plating and presentation just about perfect, and the quality and flavor were spot on. The only slightly off element was the overly smokey taste of the octopus and the occasional lapse of changing the table service. Chalk this up to a new staff and a new kitchen. That said, If I lived in Denver I'd surely be dinning at the Nickle again. read more

I would be so bold as to give this establishment a 5/5 but would give a more precisionary rating of 4.5 based on the quality of food alone. My friend and I dined together and a charcuterie board to start out. That was lovely, and we particularly loved the jelly as well as the French cheese and prosciutto. Other than that we had the short rib, seared scallop, squash gnocchi and Hawaiian bread pudding. The short rib I thought was wonderful, the sauce was exceptional and the meat was quite tender but my friend thought it was rather overcooked. I didn't agree. However, the gnocchi I didn't particularly care for, as it seemed rather dry and I wish it had an additional more flavorful sauce. The sauce the gnocchi was lightly coated in was mediocre and not as bold as I had hoped. My friend and I agreed that both the Hawaiian bread pudding as well as the seared scallop were phenomenal. read more

As I entered this establishment the common wave of uncertainty began to wash over me, that is until a friendly face from the bar greeted me and introduced himself as the barkeep. I instantly felt comforted and reassured that I was in the hands of a superior bartender with infinite wisdom of the spirits as if he himself was a descendent of Osiris Egyptian god of wine and beer. This mixologist served me as no other barkeeper has, he built, blended, mixed, chilled, cooled, flamed, frosted and garnished my drinks which danced on my tastebuds satisfying my endless desire for liquor as no meet mortal ever could. I ordered the Braised Pork and Green Beans, the meat was delicious, and that's that I wasn't feeling good, I can only imagine how much better it would have been had I felt better, the green beans definitely weren't what I expected, and they weren't for me, our waitress was very nice, I believe her name was Mackenzie, I had a bite of my bfs steak and OMG if we ever come back to Denver, and we come back here, I will get that. read more

My wife and I had a fantasitic experience at The Nickel. The food is creative and delicious. We both enjoyed the Oletha sweet corn bisque, which was light, flavorful and fresh. For a main course we shared the scallops. They were seared to perfection, and the flavors bright and well balanced. Dessert did not dissapoint. The chocalte budino had the wonderful quality of being light, yet rich, and the little bit of salt really set the flavors off. The service is friendly, knowledable and attentive . What else can you ask for? The remodled space is hip and modern while still feeling inviting and comforable. My wife and I both sat in the booth seating (on the same side, I know it's kinda weird, but I don't care) so we could fully enjoy the atmosphere of the restaurant. Plus, they are super comfortable. Overall a truly five star experiece. My only regret is that we didn't try anything from the wood burning grill. I guess we are justing going to have to go back. read more

After reading the other reviews on this restaurant, I was a little worried. I have always loved Kevin Taylor's and was sorry to see it go. I have always loved the Hotel Teatro too so I found it hard to believe they'd replace a really good restaurant with a mediocre one. I was really glad I ignored the bad reviews and forged out to this place. I loved the idea of a sushi like charcuterie menu. That was probably the highlight. The cocktails alone were worth another trip back. I can definitely see myself returning for the cocktails and a cheese plate again. The waiter Jonah was great. Attentive. Knowledgeable about everything. No complaints there. It was busy- he was very busy, but he never forgot us. The entrees were too big for me. Steakhouse big. Big boy big. If we had gotten a salad or soup, I wouldn't have been able to eat even the 1/4 of my dinner that I did. My husband who routinely eats every little bit on his plate, could only eat half of his dinner. It was really good food tho. The pork chop with cheesy grits was splendid. I had a steak, cooked perfectly with a cauliflower gratin. It was amazing. No dessert obviously. I WILL be back to this place. A lot. I will bring my friends and they too will rejoice. read more

A beautiful atmosphere in an old building built in 1911. The service was exceptional, the Lavender Roe Pinot Noir was delicious, and I highly recommend the Asparagus Sandwich. We went here for a barista throwdown - very cool atmosphere and event. The space is just inside the main entrance to Hotel Teatro. It does have a very "dark wood, old library, cool study" feel. The coffee made for the throwdown was fun and really good, but not sure of their day-to-day coffee or prices. Definitely worth a stop to mix up your coffee hang out scene. read more

Unbelievably delicious French dip on the lunch menu. Unbelievably good. Our service was excellent. The wine was excellent. The atmosphere was excellent. Most of the food was excellent save for the long red hair I pulled out of my grilled asparagus sandwich. Barf. Handled very quickly and professionally and yet still barf. I'd love to try this place again... perhaps at dinner when the shedding red head is off her shift. Note to management... hair in a $15 sandwich not only equals new sandwich but also free sandwich. Delicious restaurant located in one of downtown Denver's premier hotels. We came here for dinner Friday night and really enjoyed it. We started with the Wagyu Beef Skewers which were tender and delicious. I had the Braised Beef Shortribs for an entree and was not disappointed! It was full of flavor and very tender. I also enjoyed one of the Martini Flights for drinks. I would definitely come back. Although I didn't get to try it, their breakfast looks really good, too. Next time! read more

A dismal dinner. And very expensive. Our dinner started out great with the Harvest Salad. Exquisite. Then we had the short ribs with two sides. The short ribs arrived as large slabs of meat on white plates. Not the best look but, hey, the sides do come separate. The ribs were well cooked but with wildly varying amounts of sauce. The sides ... well, we waited and waited and waited. Finally got a chance to ask (the service was spotty at best). "Oh!" They said. Whether the waitress forgot to put the order in or forgot to serve it we're not sure. But a long five or so minutes later, the Brussels sprouts arrived. Great sounding recipe but, sadly, the veggies were barely lukewarm. Sometime after this the potatoes arrived. Hot ... hooray! ... but badly undercooked. Why people pay to eat here is beyond us. We stopped in for a snack on Easter morning. The door person was friendly and directed us to the breakfast area, which was beautiful and well appointed. The reason it is getting 2 stars is because of poor quality and poor service. We got a coffee, orange juice and 2 pastries for over $20. The waiter handed me an empty paper cup for my coffee and poured my girlfriend an orange juice in a plastic cup. We had a seat and a few minutes later the waiter brought out our pasties in paper wrappers (ala Starbucks to-go). We asked for silverware and plates. The waiter brought out coffee cup saucers but no silverware so I went and got some for myself. I expect a hotel to be over priced, but I also expect good quality and excellent service. They only got the over priced part of the equation right. Pastries weee average, juice was great, coffee was subpar. read more

I have lived in Denver for 12 years now, this is by far the worst meal I have ever had. The salad was bland, and that might be giving it too much credit. We made the mistake of all ordering the overpriced artichoke hearts entree. It was "crusted" with charcoal. Yes, charcoal. No one finished their entrees and we all felt terrible afterwords. We stopped here for appetizers, my wife and I. They have a vast menu of cheeses, so we chose several cheeses at the waiter's recommendation, and also the tomato mozzarella caprese. The mozzarella caprese was delicious, and unlike any other - you just have to get it to understand. The cheeses were outstanding, and coupled with walnuts and a sweet jelly compote - Party in the mouth. The server was very knowledgable on the cheeses, and very attentive as well.
