It was okay. My fiancé and I decided to drop in to Ohana Poke during our trip to Billings. After reading all the great reviews, we were excited to see what the hype was about. Truthfully, I'm still not quite sure. Let's start with food. I ordered a BYO small bowl with: + 1/2 white rice, 1/2 sushi rice + Edamame, Green Onions, Avocado & Krab Salad + 1/2 Hawaiian Poke, 1/2 Spicy Tuna Poke + Spicy Mayo + Pickled Ginger & Furikake The serving size was perfect. A small bowl was more than enough to satisfy my hunger after driving for a few hours. The mixins and toppings were good too. Fresh ingredients all around. My biggest bone to pick with the food itself was the poke. Now, I try not to be biased because I was born & raised in Hawai'i and there's no where in the world that can compare when it comes to poke. But what we had at Ohana Poke lacked good flavor. I'm not sure what's supposed to be in the Hawaiian Poke but it tasted like plain ahi cubes to me, there was nothing special about it. The Spicy Tuna Poke really threw me for a loop. Traditionally, spicy tuna poke is made with a spicy mayo. What we had here was just straight up spicy - and I love spicy food! My fiancé could barely finish his food because of the heat. Like I said, I love spicy. But the flavor I was looking for just wasn't there. I ended up asking for a side of spicy mayo to drench my poke in - that's where all the flavor I had came from. The overall vibe of the restaurant was cute and welcoming. It's definitely somewhere I would have lunch with a friend, if all else was ideal. The service was a little different. The young lady who helped us did not seem like she wanted to be there and she sure as heck didn't want to be serving us. I hate walking into a restaurant and feeling like I'm inconveniencing the staff by ordering. We did stroll in about 30-40 minutes to closing but I don't think that's an excuse. Would I recommend Ohana Poke to a friend? Maybe with caution. It's not in my list of "must-haves" on our next trip to Billings. read more

I like it. With a decent variety of proteins, raw and cooked, Ohana Poke does a good job in preparing the bowls while you wait and watch. With so many people working behind the counter when I stopped in, it looked chaotic. That might work itself out the longer it's opened and as the process smooths out. Like all Poke places, it's simple: decide what size, pick a base, pick a protein, then toppings, and sauce. Of the seven or so proteins, only three are noted as raw. There is something for everyone. With the variety of toppings, the final, fresh, ready-to-eat meal can be as complicated or as simple as you want. I opted for spinach as the base in lieu of either the brown or white rice. That choice made for a light meal, although there was quite a bit of liquid from the sauce and toppings - and that's where the rice would be an advantage. Well, that, and making it a more substantial meal. The inside is nice enough, with a light, open concept that doesn't seem to encourage lingering for some reason. That probably doesn't matter as with such a lighter meal, you might have the energy to get back outside instead of wanting to take a nap. It's all good. read more

Right away, I noticed that there wasn't a lot of fish in my bowl, even though the fish should be the star of any poke bowl. There was also a lot more rice added than what I was expecting. You then select your add ins. I selected edamame, mandarin oranges, cucumber and seaweed salad. I had the Hawaiian Poke (ahi tuna) with sesame seeds and wonton crisps as my toppings. I had some unsweetened tea to wash it down with. The ahi is missing some major key flavors. It is basically chopped ahi. The good part is that the ahi was not stringy, so you can bet it is quality ahi. We also tried the white rice base with, edamame, beans and krab salad (spicy), combo of steak and chicken with wonton crisps for topping. Washed down with a cola. I did not have enough fish to last my whole plate which was disappointing. They also sell gelato. Italian gelato in a Hawaiian poke shop? As a Hawaiian poke shop, it would be wonderful to see some locally made desserts like we enjoyed in Hawaii to complete our experience, like we make at home. Born and raised on O'ahu, Hawai'i, I've had my fair share of quality poke. First of all, Poke means "to slice, or cut crosswise into pieces". I had the spicy ahi poke, which they've ground the ahi and mixed in the spicy mayo. I've had that in sushi, but not as a poke bowl. Also, there's an option to put a sauce on your rice, which in Hawai'i, we don't do that. The sauce from the poke itself just seeps onto the rice, not doused. The freshness of each ingredient is good, but I wouldn't count this as a "poke place", but more of a rice bowl restaurant that also serves poke. They charge the same for the bowls even if you want the fresh tuna or salmon, or the cooked tofu. Ohana is hands down the best place to get a filling, tasty, healthy, fresh, and relatively affordable lunch in downtown Billings. In all honesty, I was nervous to try it because I was skeptical that the raw fish would be any good, but it is! I've enjoyed countless poke bowls with both the raw spicy tuna and the raw salmon. Another thing that's great about Ohana is how responsive the owners are to constructive criticism; when Ohana first opened in Billings, it didn't have cold sushi rice and offered ground tuna instead of the cubed tuna that typically comes in poke. Folks complained in reviews, and soon after, Ohana changed its menu to offer cold sushi rice and classic tuna poke. I appreciate the frequent promotions and point system, too. The one item on the menu that could potentially be improved upon is the acai bowl. As is, it's delicious, but a bit too sugary. Swapping out the white chocolate chips for cacao nibs would make it better I think. read more

The rice used was not sticky rice and soy sauce was added to it (yuck!). The ahi was old, chewy and rubbery. Good ahi should melt in your mouth and shouldn't be chewy. Their mix-ins are all fresh as well it's $1-2 extra for avocado, krab salad, and seaweed salad. The seaweed salad isn't a traditional seaweed salad but it's packed with flavor. They have a good selection of proteins and they're all freshly prepared. They have a pretty good selection of sauces as well- spicy mayo is always the way to go but they also have some lighter options.
