This place is a must try! I'd give more than 5 stars if I could. Brunch - the best we've had in NH. For starters- the pastry table: traditional and orange glazed cinnamon rolls. Soft, light & flakey pastry and delish. Orange cranberry scones- again, airy and flaky, not at all dense like most scones. Fresh fruit. They had hot crossed buns (just like my Nonna used to make- really brought me back!). Monkey bread- ooey gooey and light! The buffet itself: eggs station: my wife had an egg white omelet, I had scrambled eggs- both were great. Ham, bacon, waffles, cranberry apple crème brûlée French toast, roasted red pepper & asparagus quiche, maple baked beans, breakfast potatoes, buttermilk biscuits and white sausage gravy. The truth is that every single item on the menu was as good or better than any other place we've had brunch. The coffee was great, and there was even a piano player tickling the ivory's while we ate. And the service was also outstanding. I don't know if I could come up with anything they could improve upon. The price was reasonable- even a value given how great the food tasted. We went to the Old Courthouse for Thanksgiving dinner and we will definitely be back! It's a small cozy restaurant and from the moment we walked in we were surrounded by amazing smells. The appetizers were individual but absolutely outstanding. Specifically the baked brie with apricot and almonds. Both my husband and I had the traditional Caesar salad and both agree it was the best Caesar dressing we've ever had. Honestly everything was delicious from start to finish. If I'm being completely honest the only negatives we had about our meal was we wished the bread was warm and my husband thought the brown sugar honey sauce was a bit too sweet. The only true negative was the service. We spent more time waiting for our waitress than we did eating. She was trying a bit too hard and if she had taken a breath and relaxed I think she would have done better. Unfortunately poor service can ruin a fantastic meal and is something we always take into consideration when deciding whether or not to return. Food was good and stars are mostly for disfragmented service and approach to serving food. They have an omelette station made to order. You can also get made to order pancakes, waffles or French toast. Once you order what you would like., they bring it to your table. Meanwhile. You can serve yourself other offerings including pastries, fruit, oatmeal, lox w fixings, potatoes etc. The workers were working hard but our plates piled up with no one removing them from the table. Seating was tight and the set up for the buffet was not thought out well. It was difficult navigating around tables. The juice was watered down with ice. The chef sometimes had to stop what he was doing to pass out the plates to tables and upkeep the rest of the buffet. They look like they serve alcoholic drinks but this was not mentioned on our arrival. The had a fantastic piano player there. He was great!! Food was fresh and tasty. I've been on the search for a good upscale restaurant in this area for a while now and the first time I wanted to try this place they were having a private event so plans were changed around. Today, I was looking around for a place to grab some dinner and realized this was an option in the area so I decided to give it a shot. At first, it seemed very well put together, the restaurant is quite beautiful inside and out and if you can ignore the condescending looks from the elderly dining inside its absolutely worth every second because the food is top notch. I'm a bit of a food connoisseur and travel around New England trying different foods, leaving reviews where I find exceptional restaurants and this is certainly one of them. To be frank, the food here surprised me. I was not expecting anything in Newport to be in my NH top 5 but this certainly earned its spot. I had a shrimp appetizer and a rack of lamb and both of them blew me away the flavors were incredible; cooked just right and the portions sized perfectly. My two kids also loved their dishes, a NY strip steak and Lobster Ravioli, they told me I should leave a 5 star review and I agreed! Our waitress was phenomenal and we had excellent service the whole time from when we first arrived and it was packed full of diners to when things calmed down and we were the second to last table still dining. What a great find for us. Although, they have been in business for quite a while, for us, this was a pleasant surprise. The food is excellent although the menu is quite limited (which my father asserted was a good sign). I started with Brie en croute with lingonberries and toasted almonds.. delicious. Next, Scallops with orange and fennel.... delicious. Finally, profiteroles filled with ice-cream and topped with warm chocolate sauce... light and perfect. Our waitress couldn't have been nicer and service was quick and well timed. We're looking forward to coming back and trying their Sunday brunch which has great reviews. I love the Courthouse restaurant. The ambience is terrific, particularly if you like a quiet meal in lovely surroundings. I've eaten there for lunch and I've eaten there for dinner and never had a bad meal. It is American cuisine prepared with inventiveness. Everything was great! The ambiance was nice and our food was really good. The only issue was the service. Maybe our waitress was new but she seemed flustered and we heard her telling tables about other things she didn't tell us. But overall everything was great food wise which is most important to me. The scallops I'd say were the best of all the dishes. The chicken was good too. Because it literally looks like....an old courthouse. At least, on the outside. As for the inside, the decor appears to be quite formal at first. Though I can assure you if you dress casual, they won't kick you out. We came in for the Sunday brunch buffet. Though it's a rather modest selection, what they produce is pretty stellar quality. Everything is made fresh, including and especially the omelets. It's also nice there was live music. The service was on point, too! The staff were not only wicked friendly; they also didn't rush us out or anything, despite us still being there past closing time. Fair warning though: the interior is quite small. So, you may not wanna bring in a football team's worth of people. It's the epitome of a classic hole-in-the-wall place that really lives up to the reputation of such. But again, it's easy to miss since the street it's on apparently isn't labeled. Parking is on the opposite side of the front entrance. Weird. Helps they have a full bar, too. I drank more mimosas than you could shake an orange tree at. And this Old Courthouse gets 5 ambiguously hidden courthouses on unlabeled roads out of 5. read more

I LOVED THIS PLACE. If I could give it 10 stars I would. Honestly, I don't have many photos because I ate it all before I could even think about it. I zoned out a lot during this meal because every bite was so fabulous. I couldn't even hold a conversation with my husband, I was deep in flavors and couldn't be disturbed. The restaurant is set inside of an old 1800 courthouse. It's very charming and reserved. Now onto the food... We started with the brie- it was a small portion, perfect to split. It came on top of a jam glaze with almonds- so fabulous. Next we opted for a cup each of the mushroom soup- this soup was made with a cream base and sherry. Absolutely fantastic. The mushrooms were chopped, so you could really indulge in all of the flavors. For the main course I had the steak with mashed potatoes. My husband has the butternut squash ravioli. First of all, I will venture out to say, this is the best steak I've ever had. Without a doubt. The way it was cooked, down to the flavor... exquisite. My husbands dish was great because each ravioli was generously filled with butternut squash- add on the brown sugar glaze and walnuts and I was done for. Side salads, perfect. Then to dessert- we shared a creme brûlée which was so so creamy. The sweetness with a coffee was the perfect ending. Overall, a great dining experience. read more

Superb birthday dinner for my hubby. The Old Courthouse is a great eatery in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. The food, ambiance, historical setting and service made for a memorable time. The Old Courthouse is an elegant place. Made reservations for 1930 and they were honored on the spot, even though we spent about fifteen minutes looking for parking... In Newport?! That's because the restaurant was recovering from the fracas of the pre-theatre crowd that had just left for curtain time at the Newport Opera House. The manager told me that ten minutes before our arrival they had every table full. The staff was busily redoing virtually all the tables, such as like after a huge family Thanksgiving dinner. Our server, Kate, made sure everything was in order. We began the evening with the crab cake appetizer which we shared, followed by a baby spinach salad with sliced parmesan cheese, fresh strawberries and a delicious vinaigrette. Then the piece de resistance, I had the scallops, exquisitely done, and my spouse had the strip steak, delicately seasoned and cooked just short medium, providing for a tender and juicy selection. I'll say my scallops were cooked to perfection, seared on the outside and very tender on the inside. Both were accompanied by a melange of delicately sautéed vegetables and mashed potatoes. And we washed it all with a bottle of pinot noir. We shared the dessert, a large slice of german chocolate cake that came with a burning candle to celebrate the birthday. And a visit from the restaurant manager to ensure we had a memorable evening. Very, very good dinner. Total bill for appetizer, salads, main courses, dessert, a bottle of wine and espresso at the end came under $100. read more

We had a lovely time. The dining room is really stately and beautiful, the service friendly and professional. I loved the zucchini pancakes, (though they were quite small). I ordered the steak with tomato basil couscous and salad with blue cheese dressing. The food was ok. I really liked the couscous. The steak was perfectly done medium, but a bit grisly. I thought they would have more local produce in the salad. But it was an excellent value! I had a shiraz and a cab - both were passable. The chocolate cake was excellent! My wife had the salmon - she thought it slightly overdone but I liked it, along with roasted brocollini. Again, excellent value. Best lunch place for a delicious lobster roll and coconut custard pie. All the homemade desserts are amazing. I have been taking visitors for lunch for over ten years and always amazing food. The experience is unique. The courthouse building is historical and charming, the dining room is low key so do not expect a fast meal. Not recommended for a rowdy group or my twenty-something sons. This was our third visit here and we were here for their soul food dinner. Senie Hunt was phenomenal!! Everyone here is lovely and very hospitable, and we really want to love it, but the food and service is just so lacking every time. The black-eyed peas and collards were the best part of the meal. The pork was tough and dry like jerky, the mac & cheese was dry and lacked flavor. The "southern fried chicken", which was what I was so excited for, was absolutely not fried, definitely not crispy, and so very not southern. It was soggy, boneless, breast tenders. The grits were well cooked but the shrimp was clearly frozen, over cooked and tough. They had pie for dessert which was either pumpkin or sweet potato. The crust was overworked and tough. The pie filling should have been silky but instead was grainy and so very over spiced that it overpowered everything else, and you couldn't tell which main ingredient it actually was. In addition, the caramel drizzle was gritty like sand. The servers are very lovely, but we were constantly out of water and beverages, which was odd because it was a buffet, so their only job was taking care of beverages. The venue is beautiful, but I just can't find any reason to come back based on our three trips here. read more

We stumbled into this place thinking it might be a diner or something, but it's actually a super nice restaurant. They have a Sunday brunch buffet that's $17 a person. Your choice of waffles, pancakes, omelet, scrambled, etc, and various other options depending on the day. We had a cold cucumber apple soup, a bean quinoa salad, fruit salad, granola, peach cobbler, and I can't remember what else. Coffee, tea and juice. Fridays they have outdoor seating. Plenty of parking everywhere, right off route 10. Separate individual restrooms for a man and a woman. read more

As you can guess, this restaurant is in the old town courthouse in Newport, NH. We went for brunch today and, I've gotta say, this was probably the best meal I've ever eaten up here in this area. All the food is made fresh in-house, the dining room is small but nicely decorated and they have a old guy playing the piano. They make omelets, belgian waffles, pancakes, french toast and eggs to order (they bring these to your table after you put your request in) as well as a great assortment of carved meats (the ham was great) and danish type desserts including fresh cinnamon rolls, an apple tart (with nice and crispy filo dough), a chocolate crumb cake, blueberry scones and a blueberry crumb cake. There was also a mixed fruit, homemade granola (with coconut yum!), a Greek-style yogurt. Today they had a dish they called peach creme brulee french toast. It was very, very good. My wife absolutely loved the vegetable quiche and the omelets were very nice- I had cheese, ham, onion and shrimp in mine. The service was good, but the 2 wait staff seemed to get a little overwhelmed once the dining room started to fill up so it was a bit slow to get coffees and waters refilled. We had reservations for 10:30 but there was only one other table seated when we arrived. Around 11 more parties started arriving. The price was also very reasonable at only $15 per person. We went to Newport,NH to check out an antique barn, that was closed so next try to find a place for lunch. The GPS gave a few suggestions and we picked The Old Courthouse. We were delighted to be in a very well preserved building and a delicious lunch also. I had a Monte Crisco and my husband had a Turkey Open Face Sandwich. Both were very good! This place is a hidden treasure. It worths driving a long distance to visit. The 5 * rating is solid. The environment is outstanding. Walls are decorated with pictures and flowers are on every table. I tried the Austrian shrimp and the pear soup for the starters. The pear soup absolutely rules. It warmed me up that day because ginger spice is added. The shrimp are also fresh and fatty. They served 4 large shrimps in that dish and it only costs $8. In addition the lamb chops are also gorgeous. They served fruitful sauce with the lamb chop which neutralize the fishy taste from the lamb. 8 pieces lamb chops in that dish and only costs $23. One of our party does not do any cinnamon product. We were interested in the dessert, but our server was cautious and she could not really tell if the desserts have cinnamon in it, so she served us a small slice and let me try it. With ambrosial food, elegant decorations, fair price and outstanding service. I don't see why I should not give this place 5*.
