Arrived at our reservation time 6:15 pm (Friday) only to be left standing in the doorway and ignored for over 10 mins. Once seated, and asked if we would like to order an appetizer we were told they were down to one fryer so they are limiting fried foods therefore unable to order the cheese curds or onion tanglers. 45 mins later we were allowed to consume our appetizer and salad. However, our drinks were removed from the table after our second refill. @ 1hr 20 mins our bland Prime rib on one plate & potatoe skins on one salad plate arrived without any seasoning or condiments. The salt shaker top fell off onto the plate but was empty! Upon completion of our meal @ 1hr 50 mins, 1 refilled glass was returned to the table followed immediately by our check. 2 soft drinks @ $5.60, 1 shrimp cocktail @ $15.95, 1 bruschetta @ $11.95, 2 old mill cut prime rib @ $105.90. Non-cash Total: $154.89. No prices are listed on the menu for the entree's other than "market price"! This amount far exceeds any market price for any 10 oz prime rib.

Exceptional service, exceptional food, exceptional ambiance. We were in town to check out the Spam museum and went here for dinner. We had a reservation and were seated right away. Servers were knowledgeable and friendly and always on top of things. The trio was awesome as was their special, the sockeye salmon. Do yourself a favor and just order the Spam dunkers. You can't go to Austin and not eat Spam. We were sat at a high top that overlooked the river. Awesome scenery. Would love to come back in the summer and sit outside.

One of my two favorite places in Austin! Came for the filet and was not disappointed! We shared the SPAM dippers; when in Rome! They were surprisingly good. We both had filets, both were a little undercooked for us. This was quickly addressed no problem. So good! Veggies, salad, and soup were all good too. The service is very friendly and helpful.

Well I ventured out. Rarely do I leave the hotel for dinner if there is a restaurant in the hotel. The old mill was recommended by a co-worker. First off the setting is amazing. The Old Mill is on a small river with an old dam sorta thing. I sat at the bar where I was served immediately. I ordered a Grain Belt beer (a local favorite) it was kinda a medium bodied beer. Absolutely great. I ordered Spam dippers as an appetizer. I rarely order appetizers and have NEVER eaten Spam. It was spectacular. The filet minion was really good, not the best. That spot is still reserved for Omaha Prime. The asparagus was stringy and flavorless then replaced with cold hard asparagus that had a sorta chemical taste. But I will always eat asparagus no matter how bad it is. The au gratin potatoes were amazing. Overall this was a great experience. Nobody is perfect, The naysayers can my hiney. Oh, and BTW there is a smoking area off to the side of the patio where there is live music.

I called and made a reservation and told them it was for our 45th Anniversary. Must have been the bartender that answered by his curt attitude and he said we have a 6:15. I booked it. We showed up for the reservation and the place was quite busy. I could see the couple in front of us could not get a table due to having no reservation. It was obviously the bartender once again no hostess. I gave him my name, he grabbed two menus and rushed us to a corner table, turned the light on dropped the menus on the table, told us the waitress would take care of us and rushed off. Seemed like he was completely overwhelmed and frustrated and really had no time to be doing someone else's job was the general attitude. Waitress showed up in about 10 minutes and fetched our required beverages and asked if we were interested in an appetizer which we were not. 10 minutes later she brought us our drinks and we ordered our dinners. She was very nice but very busy. She brought us our house salads which were tasty but a bit short on the veggie mix. Bread sticks were warm and soft. When our steaks arrived, hers was bloody and she ordered it medium. She flagged down the waitress who responded promptly and politely. I asked her to take my plate and keep it warm until my wife's was ready so we could eat together. I told her it was our 45th anniversary and she said congratulations! Once the food was returned we ate and enjoyed the steak, potato and broccoli as well as asparagus spears. All was tasty. We paid our 69.00 dollar bill and left. Overall our special celebration was made to feel more like an inconvenience for the staff than a special dinner. We have eaten here before and always enjoyed the happy hour snacks and beverages. Tonight, on our 45th wedding anniversary.....Not So Much. A hostess is definitely a must before they run off more patrons.

This place is a true gem in Austin, MN. The inside is very nice and overlooks what I assume is a river. We decided to come here after going to the Spam Museum, so of course we tried the spam dunkers. If you don't try anything else, try the dunkers, they were amazingly fried and the spicy dipping sauce added a nice kick. I also tried the fish sandwich which had a very nice sized piece of haddock, and the sandwich itself was also good.

Really enjoyed our visit to the Old Mill. Casual dining in such a wonderful setting ... we could enjoy a visual of the river as it flows near and over spillway (the historic building was a grain mill of some kind). The appetizers included a very innovative dish called stuffed dates (savory) Yum. I'd greatly recommended an order of these. Presentation was gorgeous too. Our server Meghan helped us decide. We had some wine from their excellent list yet the bar offered a variety of mixed drinks and beers. Entre options were great too. We just had an all around delightful experience. Thanks to the staff for their attentiveness and attention to quality.

This is a family favorite for celebrations. My wife and I ate there in July with my parents (to celebrate my retirement). It definitely met expectations. I had prime rib which I ordered medium rare. The piece I was served was probably a little more done than medium rare, but still tender, juicy, delicious ... and huge. I didn't need that much beef. But what the heck, I was celebrating. My wife and my mom had shrimp scampi, and it was excellent. My dad had walleye, also excellent. (If I hadn't ordered beef, I would have gotten the walleye. Your entrée comes with soup or house salad and choice of potato, wild rice, or vegetable. The service is casual and friendly. The view is terrific; if you can get a window seat as we did, so much the better. read more

I love this place! It's a little bit off the beaten path, but they have a great selection of entrees, appetizers, and drinks. I was there and they were running out of a lot of the desserts on the menu, but otherwise the food is great, and the setting is beautiful - along the river! I've been several times, and it can get crowded. Last time I was there a bus tour group burst out in song! read more

Very disappointed with my visit last Tuesday at lunch. Reservations for a birthday lunch for 5 were made. We waited for over an hour for our food. We asked our waitress if the order had been misplaced but were told it was slow because it was busy. All the tables around us (that arrived after us ) were served and some were done eating. Still no food for us. The waitress still said our food was next up. Finally we decided to leave at which point another waitress made a silly, flippant remark about "sh-- happens". The manager did come when asked and our food was boxed up and sent with us for free. I have been here several times over several years and was so disappointed this time..... a lost order, being lied to and then having our experience belittled by another waitress.... IF I decide to go back it will be a long time..... read more

One of my very favorite places in Austin. I eat here rather often. The dinner menu can be a bit pricy for everyday dining but the lunch menu is between $8-12 which is comparable to many places in town and is very good. Actually, I have never had anything on the menu I didn't enjoy. As a regular I would recommend the specials as the standard menu doesn't really change. It is a beautiful historic building with a creek/dam view. When I have taken people here for the first time they consistently comment that it is a special place. I do recommend the really honestly homemade desserts. They are not open Sundays or Mondays so that is something to take into account. read more

Usually can count on The Old Mill to have excellent food and great service in a cozy atmosphere. Unfortunately I did not have a good experience last night due to the fact that my steak was severely undercooked. I ordered medium and it was closer to rare in places. My husband had his medium rare and it was more done than mine. I sent it back to the kitchen, but it didn't improve in the middle. My husband ended up eating some of it because I could not stand it. What a disappointment! These steaks are not cheap; so sad to have it ruined like this. I would expect better since this is their business to get it right and they cook steaks every night. read more

The food was good, although I ordered a sandwich that was supposed to have cashews and was told they were out (how hard is it to get cashews?), so had to make a different choice. Our waitress was excellent. My biggest complaint with this restaurant was that it is NOT handicapped accessible. My 86-year-old mom made it up the 4 or 5 steps, but the ladies restroom was out of the question. I realize the charm of an older place makes it tough, but this was really bad. read more

Wow, this place is great. Supper Club type of place which beings back fond memories of the old days. Doo was our server and food was fantastic. Best option in Austin for Fine Dining. Love going here for special occassions with my boyfriend, i.e, last day of college semester, Valentine's Day, birthdays. Always friendly servers and food (we usually get filet mignon and prime rib) is delicious. Although the price is up there, we enjoy overlooking the dam and the wildlife out the picture windows. Tucked away like a little cabin. read more

My husband and I had a very small wedding and wanted a nice place to have dinner and relax afterward. We chose the Old Mill because of the great food and wonderful location. So happy we did, the owners and staff were so helpful and kind. They let us come in early to decorate and worked with us to create a menu for our event, had great service and overall everything was beautiful. Thank you for everything! read more

History

Established in 1950.

The building was built in 1867 and ran as a grist mill until 1940's. When Ramsey Mills Flour closed the building was reopened as a restaurant in 1950. The buisness would change hands twice until I purchased the buisiness and building in 1988. We are known for our atmosphere and setting as well as our food.

Meet the Business Owner: David F.

Purchased the building and buisness in January 1988. My favorite is steaks and seafood. My goal is to serve them natural not masked with alot of sauces or seasonings. The prime rib I serve is a 109 standing rib roast. I have spent many years perfecting the cooking and art of carving such an impressive cut of meat which is considered to be a dying art in the food industry because of the work and waste involved. I am proud to have the opportunity to offer such a prime cut of beef. We have nine tap lines that are filled with up to date craft brews, sorry, no domestics, only bottled. Also proudly boast an extensive wine list offering over 150 bottles. The building was once an old flour mill so the setting is beautiful all year around with some of our tables overlooking the Ramsey Dam. Our most recent addition has become quite popular which we call the wine room. It is in the lower level and can be reserved as private. It too has a beautiful view of the dam.

A Rochester restaurant owner admonished me for being too negative about places here but, when I have really good food somewhere else, I cannot help it. Anyways, though I had breakfast, the lunch specials looked really good, too. You can't beat home cooking. Bottom line, it's too bad this place isn't closer.

A single-sided big menu has most of the food offerings, but there is a separate Spam menu that can be brought out on request. My husband had a beer while I was happy they had cans of local Loon Juice cider available. For our appetizer, we ordered a side item: fried okra. I don't think we've found okra anywhere else in the state! It was perfectly cooked with a cornmeal coating, piping hot and delicious. I had the Smokin' BBQ Platter. I had brisket for my meat option, with coleslaw and cornbread on the side. Perfectly cooked brisket, not dry at all. I'm an avid home baker and something of a cornbread snob, and this was excellent stuff--a perfect little loaf, sweet and perfect with butter melted within it. My husband had the Combination Platter with pulled pork and ribs. Now, he is a rib snob, having BBQed many over the years, and he declared these to be perfect (a rare thing to find in a restaurant). Not a shred of meat remained on the bone. Pulled pork was great, too, and he agreed that the cornbread was something special. He liked having pit potatoes, too, something that isn't common. Three kinds of BBQ sauce sat on our table in full, non-sticky squeezable containers. I tried the bourbon and loved it. My husband also tried the inferno; he can handle a lot of heat and said it wasn't really hot to his perception, but the flavor was good. In all, a fantastic experience here. I'd definitely come here again when passing through.

Anytime the server asks how you want a burger cooked it usually means good things, and in this case it did not disappoint. Burger was cooked a perfect medium rare, so juicy, so flavorful and the pineapple relish and the aoli added just enough flavor without drowning out the burger. Great service, and nice environment. Highly recommend
