the menu for the old sod pub

I've been coming here for years, and enjoy the old time atmosphere. But $17 for a small basket of wings, now without any veggies or dip is outrageous. The Old Sod used to have $10 baskets of wings (see old menu pic below) which included celery, carrots and dipping sauce. I would not have ordered the wings had I known the price and that they'd deleted the veggies and dip. Also they've deleted the mild, med and hot options, it's now take what you get. On top of this I ordered a basket of fries for $4 and I swear you get more fries in a medium cup at McDonald's. I appreciate that ingredient costs have increased, but I can't justify $17 for a small basket of wings. The whole point of going to dive bars is to have a few pints with your mates, listen to some tunes and enjoy some cheap bar food. I fear the Old Sod has lost its way.

My husband and I were out walking yesterday evening and came across The Old Sod. It looked interesting so we stopped for a drink. Aside from a fella sitting at the bar drinking coolers and talking to the bartender about kids' movies, we were the only ones there. Kind of strange considering it was a Saturday evening. Needless to say, we didn't stay too long. We won't be rushing back.

Food was undercooked and the place was very dirty. Avoid as there are better options nearby.

Yuck. Don't eat here. Bad food, bad management. You couldn't pay me to come back again.

Their drink menu is impressively broad, with a strong whisky selection from different regions, plus plenty of cocktails, spirits, and wine. I especially loved the Scotchman in Sidecar, which blends Té Bheag and Laphroaig with Cointreau and lemon. It had this really interesting balance of smoky peat and bright citrus. Naked and Famous was also great if you like something a little sharper and more refreshing, while the Mango Mojito leaned sweeter and easier to sip. The food was just as enjoyable. The Neapolitan-style wood-fired pizzas were probably my favorite part of the meal, with a chewy crust and really satisfying flavor. The Savory Peach from the summer specials was surprisingly good, especially with the spicy sauce on the side, and the Spicy Ropressata was another standout if you like something a little salty and bold. We also tried the Shepherd's Pie, which was warm, hearty, and comforting, and the oysters were fresh and good quality too. Overall, it feels like one of those cozy places that works equally well for drinks, a casual date night, or a laid-back evening with friends.

The atmosphere is relaxed and a bit cozy without trying too hard, which I really appreciated. The food was surprisingly good -- everything felt fresh and well thought out, not overly complicated but definitely satisfying. You can tell they care about quality and consistency. Service was friendly and easygoing, not rushed at all, which made the whole experience even better. Overall, it's the kind of spot I'd come back to without overthinking it -- whether for a casual meal or just to unwind a bit.

I was immediately impressed when I walked inside, as the place has plenty of cool decor and boasts a dimly-lit feel that I find irresistible. As I scanned the menu, I was eventually drawn to the Bramble Burger ("House ground, Cheddar, Lettuce, Tomato, Pickle, Bramble berry relish"), which comes with fries. And I feel like I made the right choice because it's one tasty hamburger. I wouldn't rank it with the best in the city, but all the components were right on target and I enjoyed the heck out of it. The fries were great, too. I don't know why it took us so long to check out Bramble Gastropub, but I think it's safe to say we'll be returning sometime very soon.

The fish and chips were overdone, I have never had fish a much deeper dark brown than the fries, which were golden. The fries were way-oversized potato wedges, which don't work well as fries. The tartar sauce and pickled cabbage were delicious along with the mushy peas. My girlfriend had the Cobb salad with chicken which was passable but not special. The service was prompt and drinks were perfect.

We arrived at around 6:30 and the place was pretty much packed. (It's a much, much smaller joint than I would've thought.) We did manage to snag a sweet table by the window, but then we were informed that an acoustic musician would be setting up shop right behind us at 7:00. I figured we probably wouldn't last too long once he started performing, so we decided to just share an order of the Sausage Rolls ("honey mustard sauce"). They arrived to the table impressively fast and sure looked great. They tasted great, too. I might even go so far as to say they're among the best Sausage Rolls I've ever eaten. The sausage is really tasty and flavorful, while the pastry around them is just as good. The zesty honey mustard perfectly complements them, too. I really enjoyed my brief visit to the Henry VIII Ale House, and I look forward to returning at some point in the future.

And judging by the fact that it was packed with people waiting for tables, we weren't the only ones who thought so. There was a woman eating wings at the end of the bar ... they looked good! A guy had a bison burger next to us and it was HUGE! If we are in that 'hood, we'll definitely stop in again, especially for a meal.
