Gave this place another try the other day. Seems to have gone downhill. Wings were very tiny and they don't seem to ever serve enough fries despite high costs. Service really wasn't an issue, just not a very nice place to be. Atmosphere is very lacking, no one seemed to have a good time, probably as food is so gross. I've been coming here for years, and enjoy the old time atmosphere. But $17 for a small basket of wings, now without any veggies or dip is outrageous. The Old Sod used to have $10 baskets of wings (see old menu pic below) which included celery, carrots and dipping sauce. I would not have ordered the wings had I known the price and that they'd deleted the veggies and dip. Also they've deleted the mild, med and hot options, it's now take what you get. On top of this I ordered a basket of fries for $4 and I swear you get more fries in a medium cup at McDonald's. I appreciate that ingredient costs have increased, but I can't justify $17 for a small basket of wings. The whole point of going to dive bars is to have a few pints with your mates, listen to some tunes and enjoy some cheap bar food. I fear the Old Sod has lost its way. read more

Aside from a fella sitting at the bar drinking coolers and talking to the bartender about kids' movies, we were the only ones there. Kind of strange considering it was a Saturday evening. I used to love coming to the Old Sod; in a neighbourhood full of bar options, this was my go to because of it's unassuming atmosphere. I enjoy the wings here and they make a great whiskey sour. However, last night a Faith Goldy meeting of campaigners was being held here which was supported by the person on site at the bar; when I pointed out that a group of neo-nationalists was gathered, the host of the night's entertainment told me to f*** off. So yeah, won't be going back here ever again. read more

The owner is very rude and constantly over charges his customers. Myself and many others have been charged many times as he adds paid bar drinks to your table. I would not suggest this spot anywhere but here is better. read more

I love coming here with friends and co-workers. I like the food, the atmosphere and above all the music. Thursdays are best!! The music is great and the performer takes requests, and if you're not a d**k you can even get invited on stage to sing. Highly recommend!!! read more

Sometimes, you just gotta drink the haterade and show your finest snobbery. If your boat floats for any of the following, you may find The Old Sod somewhat enjoyable: * Old man singing "Brown Eyed Girl" on stage * Live-at-homers pounding beers and communicating through a variety of "whoo"s * 22-year-old "wish I was snowboarding, although I've never been snowboarding" types staring in your general direction I'm no fan of these highlights, so I will pass in the future. Take away my Nova Scotia card if you must, but pubs with Van Morrison and sea shanty sing-a-longs just aren't ma bag - but if I had to do it somewhere, I wouldn't do it here. I had the best wings at the Old Sod I've ever had in my life! In general they have good, solid pub fare, but the wings have really become exceptional. I think they have a talented young cook working there. I go there quite often, Karaoke is fun, often with some amazing singers. Very entertaining. read more

Bellows BBQ inside the Old Sod Pub here is magic. Highly highly recommended. Their pork, brisket coleslaw and Mac and cheese is up there with the BEST BBQ I've had in Toronto (beachill smokehouse). The old sod used to be a fun neighbourhood bar. The new owners have run it straight into the ground. The new owner/bartender was a rude nasty man. Walked into the empty bar with a group of friends and he literally fought with me when I asked where the live music was and why the place was so empty. I guess we now know why. I will not be going back to give this man any of my business. read more

Slow service (one person tending bar, waiting tables and cooking food!) fries were burnt, the gravy was watery and without taste. The wings were just ok. We were over charged for our beers, didn't even mention it just wanted to pay and get out. Won't be returning read more

Like most kids in Etobicoke, I've been going to the Sod since I was in high school. It's the local watering hole for (usually underage) Etobicoke kids. Since I'm no longer in high school, I barely set foot in this bar unless everybody I know from Etobicoke is back in town (usually for the holidays) and decides to get together. Tuesday and Sunday nights are karaoke nights. Apart from that, there's an older guy usually doing covers all night. The waitresses are pretty cool, food is decent and prices are affordale. Now, I've never had to worry about people putting their hands on any of my stuff if I were to step away from my table. The other night, however, my best friend and I stopped by for a few pitchers. We stepped away from our table for two minutes (and our table was right next to the guy working the door) and our pitcher and drinks go missing! The waitress said she didn't take them away because they were still all full. The manager comes out and basically said "too bad, there's nothing I can do!" Really? We've been coming here for so long and you can't say "sorry, here's a pitcher on the house"? Hmm. Not impressed. Another employee also said "oh he doesn't care if you don't come back, he never has trouble filling this place". In the end, I think it was the waitress who took it upon herself and came and brought us a few drinks. Nevertheless, this left a really bad taste in my mouth and I'll make it a point to a) never come back and b) make sure everybody I tell everybody in Etobicoke who goes to the Sod not to bother going anymore. There's so many bars close to it that I'm really not sure what the appeal of the Old Sod is... Especially since it's always filled with underage kids puking in the (filthy) washrooms. read more

This place is usually decent but the guitar player, Bryan, has really gone down hill recently. He used to let people up to sing with him and the bar would be a great time. He now will shut you down if you try to go up. Definitely not worth going anymore. read more

Great staff (front and back) and I find the daily specials super cheap. Tried a pub down the road (Won't GAB(bys) about who it was) but found them sucky and cliquey. Was made to feel like a regular at the Sod after just a few visits with work colleagues. read more

My friends and I used to go to the Old Sod frequently when we were younger and always had a fun, attitude-free, good time. We've all moved back to Etobicoke and went to the Old Sod again last night, thinking that we might frequent it more often now that we're back in the neighbourhood. Unfortunately, we were subjected to two aggressive, abusive customers and no one did anything about it. There was a Jays game on and we went to an open spot at the bar to order a drink. A grown man in his fifties (not some teenage boy who doesn't know better) literally grabs my friend, shoves her out, and yells that we're in his way (the game is on a TV that is hanging 3 to 4 feet above my tallest friend's head). All the while, this gentleman's lady friend is screaming at us, calling us cows and other curse words reserved for women. To be clear, the only thing we did was approach the bar to get a drink. The man shoves his way to the bar and demands that the bartender serve us so that we can get out of his way. My friend clearly told the man and the bartender that he was being aggressive and abusive and had manhandled our friend. I could tell the bartender felt bad for us, and gave us the drinks on the house, but did nothing to remove the man or make the situation safe or comfortable for us. The man returned to his seat and he and his lady friend continued to be verbally abusive until we moved. They continued to rant while we stood by a wall and the waitress spoke to them and gave them a "warning" but they continued to insist that we were being rude by having approached the bar in front of them (there was about five feet of space between them and the bar). We clearly told the waitress that they had been abusive, aggressive and that we felt unsafe but she said that since she had given him a warning, she couldn't do anything unless he tried something again. Whenever a man got between him and the bar, he would politely ask the man to move. We finished our beers and left. In the past, we spent a lot of nights at Old Sod where we partied pretty hard but it always felt like a community and we were never subjected to that kind of physical and verbal behavior. We understand that jerks come and go but we do hold the bar responsible for creating an unsafe place and for allowing physical and verbal abuse of their patrons. I was especially disappointed because I had heard that the bar had been bought by new owner and was looking forward to seeing whether it was the same vibe as before. What a disappointment. So for women going there without guys, you should know that if someone pushes you, grabs you, calls you a cow, or any other type of behavior along those lines, you have no recourse and no one will hold them accountable. We definitely won't go again and I'm so sad to write this post about a place I have such a history with and loved. read more

If you're into bad service, bad food and mediocre music then this place is for you. This place seriously needs new owners to help it realize its potential. Ugh. read more
