Just finished a quick dinner at Talbott Tavern. Although a very cool place, it's overpriced and mediocre. Ordered the loaded fries appetizer priced at 11.99, expecting a decent sized portion. It was a small plate, with soggy fries and overcooked cheese. Also ordered two tavern salads- priced at 10.99 a piece. They were small side salads, not dinner portions, which is what we were looking for this time. Service was slow. Disappointed with the cost and portions. read more

The building itself is worthwhile place to visit if you have any inclination towards historical places. However the bar and restaurant themselves are another matter. About a year ago we visited the bar and the service was lacking, and took forever. But we were told that was because they were short staffed at the time. The past few years have been rough on the hospitality industry, so it was completely understandable. So yesterday we were completely open to giving them another chance. We went into the bar and it was fairly full, but we were able to grab a high table. As we sat there it became obvious that the likelihood of anyone coming to take our order was pretty slim. There appeared to be quite a few people standing at the bar that appeared to be trying to get drinks. The couple at the table next to us advised us that we were not going to be served, and they were leaving as they were tired of waiting themselves. So we decided to see if there was any availability in the dining area. The individuals working the dining area were very hospitable and got us seated right away. The dining area was very nice and the menu looked promising. I ordered the pot roast and was excited for it as I love good comfort food. When the food was brought out, it had the smallest biscuit that I had ever seen, with a portion size that seemed more for a kid. But I wasn't put off as the pot roast itself looked good, until I started to dig in. The bottom of the bowl consisted of what I found to be overly watery vegetables, that seemed in short supply and cut too small. I think there was only a single sliver of a potato in it. I had to search through it to point out the tiny amount of vegetables in it to my dinner companion. Layered on top of that was the meat which I found to be without flavor, and unremarkable. Even though the portion size was tiny for me, it was too disappointing to even finish the last bite. My dining companion wasn't enjoying her meal either, but decided to get the red velvet cake. Her stated reasoning being, how could someone mess up red velvet cake. But they appear to have found a way. The edge of the cake appeared to have been smooshed down from wrapping in plastic wrap to be put in the fridge. I don't know if they cut it too long before serving or if it was the recipe, but it was too dry for both of us and went unfinished. We were so disappointed that on our way home we stopped at the gas station to pick up something for desserts so the night wouldn't end completely bad. The best part of the dining experience for me was the building itself, and the tiny biscuit. Everything else was simply lacking. The only way I see us going back is if enough time passes that we can convince ourselves that it must be better. read more

Horrible food. Horrible service. Unfortunately, the history behind this place cannot out weigh the bad food and even worse customer service. Uncooked shrimp with the cheese not even melted. Overcooked (BLACK and Dry) chicken fried steak. The place was empty and the Bartender took 30mins to serve us drinks. Another 30 mins before he took our food order. Then when he delivers the food, we tell him it's cooked bad and wrong and he argues with us..... Never apologizes, just mumbles under his breath and walks away. Very interesting building and history! Our waitress was very sweet, I wish I had gotten her name. It was very clean, and our food came pretty fast. Tavern burger was very good, medium as I ordered, home made were very crunchy. Fried chicken was very moist and crunchy breading, a little salty though. Fries were just regular fries. Coleslaw was just ok. Their hot brown was a little different, I didn't try it (it wasn't my order anyway lol) but I heard it was still good. The menu was sparse on regional which we focused on and tried as much as possible avoiding the non regional menu items which I'm sure are good and very appealing but we stuck to what we felt would be Kentucky based local and indicative to the Talbott tavern and Kentucky. As any tourist might I had the generals southern fried chicken, green beans and mash for my sides which was just as if your grams herself made it, simple but delusions it's not KFC so don't compare as tourist will expecting spicy which it's not at 17$ one hopes it's free ranged local farm raised.......... and my guest had the Hot Brown which did not disappoint, what with melted cheese could, and we shared the Bourbon bbq meatballs which were very good. fried green tomatoes out of season I'd pass The 1779 charcuterie which We picked for its local ingredients and found the local ham and cheese to be delicious with the mustard and summer sassafras but the pickles weren't sweet but dill I found it a bit uninspired I'd pass on it Dessert we had the bread pudding more like a spice cake quite yummy, better served hot with ice cream than whip cream. Yummy non the less Price 4-5 on the verge of white table cloth end of the spectrum not terrible if you choose wisely and enjoy Atmosphere 3.7 -5 historic, clean. Pick the main dinning room rather than the other one it has better character. And the bar area I can't say lives up to expectation but a bar is a bar not a tavern. Very disappointed... they were out of just about everything and this is a Saturday night. The bar and drinks were awesome. But when we moved to the restaurant to eat was a different story. Our waiter didn't write anything down and got our order wrong. The rings were overcooked and husband d8dnt even finish them. I ordered the Burboun walnut chicken and it was overcooked. I ordered mashed potatoes instead of grits... I got grits. Then he rang out our check without checking to see if we wanted desert, we did. Ordered the chess pie, the only dessert beside bread pudding. We will try this here again. It does deserve a second chance. read more

It's just the small things that make a difference. Unfortunately, this wasn't as good as I'd hoped. The Talbott Tavern is old and historic. I really wanted some down home Kentucky cooking. We started with the fried green tomatoes which were decent. We also ordered the cheddar biscuits, and while I love a biscuit that is just this side of done, two of our 6 were straight dough in the middle. I would have liked to see real butter rather than 9 butter packets come with them. They weren't terribly hot either. The drinks were tasty indeed. If you're looking for a good bourbon cocktail or even a flight from a huge list, this place should make you happy. My catfish was good, but it was missing the tartar sauce, and the coleslaw was premade which always makes me sad. How hard is it to shred some cabbage and make a quick dressing to order? My husband loved his steak and bourbon sauce. He did say it was underdone (he still ate it. It was mid-rare instead of medium). Since we are in bourbon country, there are plenty of souvenirs in the entry way. On one side is the restaurant and on the other is the bourbon bar. During certain days, they have live music. You can also rent rooms in the upstairs hotel! There is a lot of history to this place, and it sits in downtown Bardstown which is beautiful. We expected something different from a place that advertises itself as a 250 year old landmark. The Inn is remodeled with modern amenities, but nary a hint of old world charm. The room was adequate, but not special in any way. There was a four-footed bathtub; I guess that supposed to be charming. Low water pressure in the sink, just a trickle coming out. Most disappointing was that they didn't make up our room, even though we hung the Service Please sign on the door. The breakfast was minimal, just a small serving of scrambled eggs,bacon, and a biscuit with gravy. We didn't make reservations for the restaurant, which features an enticing menu. Here's a thought - how about when you book your room, they ask if you would like to make reservations for dinner? They said they could squeeze us in, but it was too late for our friends. The bar had a great selection of beers and whiskeys, and the music was pretty good, but they don't serve any food, not even appetizers or snacks. The waitress was very sweet to bring us some biscuits from the restaurant. All in all, the experience fell way below expectations. read more

The Old Talbott Tavern is a historic restaurant in the center of Bardstown. Were it not for the recommendation of a friend, I may not have checked out this little gem. I am so glad that I did. The tavern is just as it sounds - a two story stone building that oozes history with a quaint sign sits at the center of town. The restaurant is a classic, and it feels like a tavern inside. Despite its size, a reservation is highly advisable for dinner or expect to wait. Even with a reservation, it takes a bit to get to the table. The service is friendly, albeit a little inattentive. I think that is due to the size of the restaurant - there is a lot of floor to cover from the kitchen to the tables and from the beverage stations to the tables. So, be sure to ask for all that you need upfront. There are lots of fun things to order on the menu. While this is certainly not a shared plates restaurant, that is just what I recommend you do. I would not want the 1779 Charcuterie Tasting all to myself, but it was a fun bite. The local cheeses and meats were classic Kentucky, and the briney pickles and tangy mustard brought it all together. Similarly, the pimento cheese is meant to be shared, with its kitchy butter crackers and more interesting pretzel thins. Both are solid. The biscuits are more impressive, and a must order with the charcuterie tasting. They are crunchy on the outside and soft, flakey and warm on the inside. They are a more interesting vessel for the meats and cheeses than the butter crackers. Skippable unless you have a group, but great for a crowd. The fried pickle chips with remoulade sauce are a must order period. They are crunchy and briney, and the sweetly spiced and creamy sauce is on point. While I was impressed by the fried pickles, I was really impressed by the meatballs. They were moist, perfect spiced and had just the right amount of sauce. Finished with a little herbs, they were attractive as well. The entrees were a bit more of a range. You go from the shrimp and grits, which are a must skip and are very boring. They are not bad, but the are pretty dry and there is no seasoning or sauce. Plus, there is melted cheddar on top, which is just weird. On the other hand, the pork chop with bacon marmalade is ridiculously good. It was moist and tender with a sweet and tangy sauce. I could have skipped the mushy green beans, but the collard greens were tender perfection. The Jesse James ribeye was more in the middle. It was a very good steak. Not the best quality meat, but it was well seasoned and perfectly cooked to the requested warm red center. Surprisingly, the baby back ribs were delicious - they were so tender. It is not a barbecue place, per se, but they do ribs well. The creamy coleslaw is a good choice of side for these, because the creamy and crunchy slaw is complimentary of the tender and sweet-spiced meat. If you want to be dazzled, order dessert. I am still dreaming about that bread pudding, which may be best in class for all bread pudding ever. As in, the perfect meal would finish with this bread pudding. It is more like a sticky toffee pudding cake. Be still, my heart. It was amazing. Likewise, the chess pie was the best chess pie that I have ever had. Served warm, it was sweet and gooey deliciousness. It's funny, because their pie crust is lousy and tough, but you can't tell when you are having the best chess pie filling ever. You will feel similarly if you get the chocolate pecan pie. Once again, the nutty and chocolatey filling is outstanding, while the crust is just...not worth eating. Personally, I would also skip the whipped cream on the pecan pie, because it can just make it too sweet, but that's a personal preference. The berry cobbler is perhaps the humblest selection, as it is a simple preparation of warm berry filling under a tender cobbler top, but it was an all around well executed dish. Old Talbott Tavern is a good choice if you are in Bardstown. The dishes won't all dazzle, but there are some that will blow you away. So, order a well-made cocktail from the oldest bourbon bar and be selective among the menu. Don't forget to check out the bullet scar upstairs from Jesse James. Then, you will have a great story to tell after an enjoyable evening. read more

Only redeeming factor of this restaurant/bar is its history. The mixed drinks, even the standard old fashioned, was sorely lacking. Food: we got the ribeye, and the sirloin. Worst steaks we've ever had in our lives. The ribeye was mostly gristle and fat, couldn't even cut through the center of it. Sirloin had absolutely no flavor, and also was tough. Only edible item on our plate was a baked potato. Definitely need to switch up their game, because Bardstown needs some better options for dinner. read more

I was really looking forward to getting lunch here as I had heard lots of good things- maybe we caught them on a bad day. There were just two of us and we got there about 1125 for lunch. We were the first people there for lunch. After some delay, we ordered sandwiches.. nothing special. I had the buffalo chicken wrap and the other guy had a club sandwich. They were both good, but took a lot longer than i would have expected considering we were the only ones in the place. The prices were also reasonable on the sandwiches. While we were eating, about 4-5 more folks came in for lunch. We paid our bill and on the way out, i stopped into the gift shop. I decided to pick up some bourbon flavored coffee and a few post cards. There was no one in the gift shop area. After waiting about 5 min, I walked into the back area and all three of the staff were sitting down eating lunch.... really? Maybe they just arent a busy place. The good things- It was easy to find and we found parking right next door to the tavern. The place is kind of cool being as old as it is, circa 1779. The bar and stone fire places are really interesting and create a nice feel for the room- I think. read more

After 3 months we were excited to be able to get back on road. After attending a wedding anniversary we spent a night in a standard room. We also ate dinner and breakfast there. The room has a good character and is well furnished and comfortable with a queen bed and chaise lounge, medium size refrigerator and microwave. The room is big enough for a king bed. Our bathroom was very small with a great window view of the from the toilet. Not many parking spaces, but we had no issues. The staff was outstanding and very helpful. Precautions included masks, gloves, social distancing and sanitizing everything. Dinner, very good. I had Abe's country steak with fries and mashed potatoes, Deb had the legendary Hot Brown. Breakfast was good, two small biscuits, very good bacon and scrambled eggs. Bottom line; pretty cool B and B. read more

The truth is, Lexi, the bartender gets 5 stars. The bar is nice and her service was excellent. Drinks were top notch. The other half, is that we were told at the Talbot Restaurant that there would be a 20-25 minute wait, even though there were plenty of empty tables, and no one else waiting in line. Oh, and we were also guests at the hotel. So we ordered our meal in the Tavern. We started with the Bourbon BBQ meatballs, that were good, but not $2.20 a piece, good. I ordered the blackened shrimp and grits. The shrimp was not blackened and the grits were cold. It tasted like something out of a Lean Cuisine box. My husband did enjoy the Hot Brown. Too bad. They say it's the world oldest bourbon bar at Talbotts, we didn't get to eat at the restaurant, but we had drinks and bar food at the bar which was good. Nice little gift shop, bar and restaurant area. Friendly staff who told us about the history of the place and the people who stayed their - Lincoln and Jesse James and you can look in the rooms if no one staying in them. After driving past the picket line at Heaven Hill we stumbled in to this historic restaurant and bar. In fact I think they have an Inn too but I was focused in food so there you have it! We sat in the bar and watched our waitress work her behind off serving drinks and food. I got to eat a classic KY "hot brown" which to me was comfort food at its finest. The bourbon list was large and everyone in our party was able to order their favorite. In spite of being a tad short staffed our waitress remained friendly and engaging. Our server was wonderful but was not supported by the kitchen, the bar or the staff overall as she was underwater from the start with the number of tables she was servicing. My gut was to leave but my wife felt guilty. We had an extraordinary wait for beverages twice. The wine list was very limited with lower end choices only. Two of them had some sort of bourbon in them. The homemade beer cheese texture was strange as it tasted as if it was whipped. Though, while a bit bland it was okay. I was really only interested in ribs but when asking for a recommendation was kindly directed towards other options leaving me with catfish. Finally, my wife ordered salmon and it was barely cooked. Note, all of this is after long waits. My wife did not really have dinner except for some kettle chips on my plate. I think what frustrated me the most was a sense this operation was using the tavern's legacy to promote a restaurant. The upside of this establishment is unlimited but it needs a serious makeover. The staff is very friendly. However, service was not good. There were six of us seated in the bar area. We waited about a half hour for our first drinks. After ordering appetizers & dinners, again, a very long wait. Server finally brought out our dinners. Asked about our appetizers. They brought them out and they were barely warm. We ordered another round of drinks. We waited, and waited, and waited. Finally my husband went up to the bar to ask about our drinks. Of note, it was not busy. At this point, there was only one other table and just two people at the bar. There were, however, 4 people behind the bar checking their phones. Our food was ok. The hot browns were quite salty. Again, staff was really friendly, just not very attentive. The building itself was very interesting. We were vacationing in the area and were so looking forward to visiting here. After a visit to My Old Kentucky Home, we decided we were hungry and wanted to stop somewhere nearby to eat. We had a destination in mind, but when we drove by The Old Talbott Tavern, the outside of the Tavern was so beautiful and unique that we couldn't help but want to go inside to further the experience. Amazingly, the sign outside boasted of 167 different bourbons to try. I had no idea there were that many! Well, I didn't have a chance to try any of them, so you'll have to find out for yourself which one you prefer. :) The inside of the Tavern was just as interesting as the outside and we were seated near a beautiful stone fireplace that wasn't in use, since it was mid-May. I decided to order a side salad which was larger than I expected and the bourbon meatballs as a consolation for not trying any of the actual bourbon. I enjoyed the flavor that the bourbon infused into the meatballs and would definitely order them again. My boyfriend ordered the burger with bleu cheese and he truly enjoyed it. The service was excellent and our food was served quickly. The only issue we experienced was that they were out of the bread appetizer which I thought was strange since it was only 5pm. They were also out of the beer that my boyfriend selected from the menu. All in all, it was very good and I would return to try some of their other menu items. read more

Beer list is decent, Bourbon list is good but the food is meh, especially for the price. Stoked: cool old feel from the 1700's, great Bourbon list. Bummed: too expensive, felt a bit stuffy. On a recent vlogging trip, Jenni and I had the opportunity to check out the Old Talbott Tavern in Bardstown, KY. Our PR rep had made arrangements for us to have dinner- reservations had been made for 630pm. Our travel time to Bardstown took longer than expected, so we reached out to the restaurant to let them know that we needed to change reservations to 730pm, if possible. We received an email back that said 730pm would be fine and they would be expecting us. They had even planned the meal for us. We think it is important for restaurants to pick our meals, so we can showcase their most popular items. We were excited about the opportunity to eat at the oldest tavern in Bardstown, KY. However, upon our arrival a little before 730pm our excitement turned to frustration and disappointment. When we checked in with the hostess, she said that it would be a few minutes on our table, which worked for us that gave us time to take pictures around the waiting area and gift shop. After just a few minutes the hostess let us know that we would be sitting in the bar. We asked if we would be able to film and take pictures with no issues and she said it would be fine. She walked us into the bar and sat us at a table right in the middle of chaos. People were yelling and acting obnoxious. These can be acceptable actions in a bar, but we were here to review the food and dining experience. I did express my concerns to the bartender who was also our server, she had no idea why we were there but she did go somewhere and ask about another table for us, then we were told to go back to the hostess desk for a new table. We gathered up everything and went back across to the hostess desk, to the confused acting hostess. She then took us to a very dimly lit room (they call it the pub) and sat us at a table that seemed to be in the darkest place in the room, which wasn't great for pictures, but we were rolling with the punches at this point. When the server arrived to the table we were able to order sweet tea. We had to remind her that our meals were already selected by the restaurant. She asked if we were ready for the food and of course it was nearing 8pm, so we were ready. Moments later another young lady brought out two entrees: Kentucky Hot Brown and the Bourbon Walnut Chicken. The Kentucky Hot Brown was lacking the turkey that the menu stated would be in it, but the ham inside was tasty. Overall, it was your average Kentucky Hot Brown, which you should at least try once while in the state. The Bourbon Walnut Chicken meal came with green beans and rice. The green beans were cold- like they had been in the refrigerator before they were put on the bowl on the plate. The Chicken had a nice crispy crust, but the chicken inside was a bit on the dry side. We were also supposed to have the Burgoo as a starter, so I mentioned it to the server. She said she had no idea what we were supposed to have, but said she would get us some. She came back out with two cups of the Burgoo. The presentation was a little it sloppy, there was juice dripping down the side, but luckily we aren't on Chopped so the flavor is the main event. I really did enjoy the flavor of the Burgoo- a little spicy and the vegetables were cooked really nice. I would recommend that you try it. My overall experience was, unfortunately, not good. Neither server we had discussed any history of the restaurant, which we would have loved to hear. The lighting was great for an intimate dinner, but not for taking pictures of food (which is why we were there). The only item of food that I did eat that I would recommend is the Burgoo- it was really good. We were excited to showcase the oldest restaurant in Bardstown, Kentucky and learn all about what makes it special. We had also heard incredible things about the people and the food. On our night there we didn't have that experience. Full disclosure: our meal was comped. Would we go back for round two? Probably not. But that doesn't mean everyone will have the same experience. Different days, different times of day, and different circumstances could have made all of the difference. read more

I ordered white wine which came out very warm so we sent it back. It came back with ice pieces in it so they most likely chilled shaken in ice and you could tell because it was watered down. We ordered the fried green tomatoes and those were pretty good. We ordered a tavern salad that we never got. We then ordered the pork ribeye, the regular ribeye with collard greens, mashed potatoes, and rice. The ribeye was well done and cold. The potatoes were also cold. My pork ribeye was probably the only thing we got that was decent. The rice I got was hard and clumped together. Our waitress discounted us and was very kind but overall we didn't enjoy dining here and won't be back. read more

Food leaves a lot to be desired. Greens were underwhelming, oily, not much flavor. Bourbon chicken was tough and overly sweet. Service was good and the ambiance of the tavern is neat to visit. Fun to explore the property and staff is genial. The restaurant has poorly executed offerings. read more
