Walking into CD Trader felt like stepping into a time capsule--in the best way possible. I'm from that generation where CDs and records weren't just things, they were experiences. And this place? It gets it. There's something about flipping through dusty records that just hits different. It's like walking into a thrift store and catching that mid-century smell--you either understand it or you don't. I do. I live in band tees 90% of the time, and this spot is basically my natural habitat. I've built up little collections over the years--certain genres, classics I refuse to let go of--and being here made me actually consider bringing some pieces back in. But also... you never know when the internet might betray you, and suddenly that random DVD becomes essential again. The vibe here is unmatched, super nostalgic without trying too hard. And the service? Genuinely great. Friendly, helpful, and not pushy at all. Also--fell completely in love with a Madonna T-shirt that I absolutely need in my life. Definitely coming back. I have heard of this place for a long time but never set foot in it until yesterday. I had a our 75 DVDs and 65 CDs I wanted to get rid of so I remembered about CD trader. The experience was fine and the sale of them went super smooth,. They were very fast checking them and having my money ready but the 2 guys behind the counter that were helping me were pretty rude and unwelcoming. Just the way they talked to me and seems very unfriendly. I've never brought items in to sell and don't know how fast they would go they them since it was a Saturday and I figured they would be busier then a weekday, I took a bunch of games to sell to GameDude a week previous and they took like 4 hours to go thru them. I literally had to drop them off and come back hours later. I didn't know if that was the norm or what. So i walked in with just my crate of CDs, because I figured I could always come back another day with the DVDs but i got called fast. Since it went quickly I figured I'd bring my DVDs in, and then I told one guy that I had a crate of DVDs to bring in also and he snapped an was like "Why didn't you bring them all in at one time?" I'm sorry I actually thought I was doing them a favor because maybe it was busy or they were short staffed. How the hell am I supposed to know? So then I brought the crate of DVDs in. I also lost my voice a few days prior and was just getting on back so my voice is pretty low at the moment l, so when I spoke to them, they were like "What? I can't hear you". Almost like I was annoying them with my low voice. I don't know if they were the owners or what, they were older guys and not some younger employee so I assume maybe owners or managers. So my point is the stores pretty cool and they have some great stuff, but the two guys in front were kinda dicks. Doubt I'll be back. read more

Great place to find vinyl, CDs, and DVDs. They carry both used and new, and the selection updates frequently. This is probably the largest selection of vinyl and CDs in the SFV, for sure worth checking out if you are the type that collects your own media... there's always a deal or two lurking if you look hard enough. Parking can be tight, there's a lot in the back and some street parking available, but it's a bit of a walk to the store if the spots in front are all taken. I notice a few people commenting on their experiences with the staff here, and it really depends on who you get. There's at least one employee who appears to think that this place would be great if it wasn't for all the pesky customers :-) however the vast majority of my interactions with the staff here have been very positive. read more

Went into the store and immediately had a horrible vibe. The place its self is really cool and looks like it has some cool stuff, but as soon as I walked in I had horrible vibes from the staff. I walked in with a bag of DVDs and I wasn't greeted or anything , I asked them nicely if they thought DVDs and they RUDELY said "we'll look at them" and within like 2 minutes they told me no. I completely get my selection wasn't good but the vibe from the jump was TERRIBLE. Not friendly, not welcoming, I felt very very uncomfortable and judged the moment I walked in till I left. Location 3: In Tarzana, California on the corner of Ventura and Wilbur, in a busy strip mall. While they do have a few designated slots, parking can get difficult due to the small number of the spots. There is limited street parking as well. Venue 3: They have been around for 30 years since 1995! While most record stores folded in the 2000's along with the CD succumbing to streaming media, they have been hanging on to their niche clientele. The recent resurgence of vinyl has definitely helped them stay afloat. Typical mid-sized utility-minded store, much reminiscent of the many record stores in the 70s and 80s... kind of nostalgic :) Although this is not a small store, they seem to be very short on space, doubling up on storage by placing the record bins on the floor under the shelves that usually hold the records. These lower bins can be hard to reach and browse through, and are inconvenient. Merchandise and Pricing 3: New and Used Vinyl, CDs, cassettes, DVDs, Blu-ray, posters, t shirts and memorabilia, with emphasis on "used". Selection is not bad for a brick and mortar store, but the merchandise is not well organized or presented. I already mentioned the hard to reach record bins under the shelves. Also, the used vinyl records are mostly shut sealed but not rated or annotated (although a few were), so it is hard to know what you are paying for. The media should either be graded in detail like online sellers do using standard benchmarking language (most commonly the Goldmine Standard), or be left unsealed for buyers to inspect visually and/or play test before purchasing. I buy quite a lot of music online and noticed that their prices are on the higher side, especially given that the condition of the merchandise is unclear. Staff 4: I have had limited interaction with the staff but they seem friendly and helpful. The Last Word 3: For me, they are OK for the nostalgia and the social interaction and when you are looking for physical props like posters, apparel or cool-looking records to pin on your wall! But for serious music shopping and collecting I usually have better luck online. read more

Decent selection of CDs and vinyl. This shop reminds me of Hollywood's Amoeba. The only staff interaction I've had has been at checkout and they've always been friendly. It's nice to have a music store in the neighborhood. They have deals, it's a hit and miss just like any other record store. This store however need to do a better job labeling the comdition of their bargain CDs and DVDs. Their cashier loves to talk so I didn't get to check the condition and when I got home, both disc and sleeve are in terrible condition. read more

I've been to this location twice, both times on rainy days, and it's disappointing that the same issue keeps happening. There are multiple water leaks inside the store that clearly haven't been fixed. These visits were several months apart, yet the leaks were still there. While I was browsing records, water was dripping on my head multiple times, which is unacceptable. Unfortunately, the music section I usually shop in happens to be right where the leak is. On top of that, customers are not allowed to play music on their phones at all. Instead of approaching politely, staff came up to me and told me to turn my music off and get headphones, in a very abrupt and unfriendly way--like I was being a nuisance. No one asked if I needed help or assistance first; they went straight to scolding me. Between the unresolved leaks and the unwelcoming customer service, the experience was completely ruined. I don't understand why these issues haven't been addressed, especially after so much time has passed. Please fix your leaks and have better customer service instead of scolding your customers first. read more

Ripped off! "Sealed original pressing" album sold for $200. I take it home, open it, and the 4th side is covered in X shaped scratches. Clearly was resealed. I went in and the owner was completely unhelpful - refused a partial refund, refused to do anything. Was super dismissive and rude. Came here for record store day 2024 to check out some new possible vinyls. They have a ton of CD's and vinyls, they also have posters, collectibles and rare finds. I been coming here for years for CD's, now that vinyl's and CD's are gaining in popularity, it nice to have a local spot in the valley to go to. They have been around since 1995, started in Thousand Oaks. You can find some great deals here, but you can also find things that are pretty pricey, so tread lightly when trying to find the classics, rarities and just in general, don't want to drop a grip chasing down that vinyl you just have to have. As far as service, hard to say, typically don't need any help, but at least on record day, they kept the line moving quickly and were friendly, so I would say service is very good. I needed to alleviate some of my old CDs, DVDs, cassette tapes, and albums. I heard this spot gives a decent value trade-in for your music if they find it profitable enough for their store. I wanted to ask questions before bringing in my items. The staff was kind and very informative. The dwelling was relaxed with a surplus of music, DVDs, and new albums to select from. The place gives you the feel and look of an old Warehouse music store. They have a huge genre of music to choose from, especially if it's old music your looking for. Now, that I received the information, I need, I will go back to trade in some of my CDs, cassette tapes, and DVDs. It's like a mini Amoeba Records store located in Hollywood. They have nearly every CD and vinyl you could want, or at least most of them. The store is much larger than it appears when you first walk in, and I especially enjoyed the rock section, my favorite! They also have a great selection of DVDs and Blu-rays, often with excellent deals on most items. I even found several Iron Maiden albums. Now I don't need to make the trip to Amoeba in Hollywood for my music fix. I love it! read more

I liked the vibe of this store. It was pretty big and had a decent selection. They were playing good music in the background and so I'd say the vibes were pretty sweet. The prices were decent I'd say. You could get a CD for like three-four dollars average. I was able to get three CDs for around 21 dollars, one of which were brand new. The customer service was just okay. None of the employees really went out there way to help me or anything but I don't think that's a huge deal and when I checked out they didn't really seem particularly enthusiastic either but that's really not the end of the world as they're only there to sell you CDs. Overall, I think I had a decent time. I'd probably recommend this spot mainly for their selection and I'd probably come again. read more

Really great collection here. I was stoked to find Never Mind The Bullocks Here's The Sex Pistols on cassette, but when I got home to play it, it didn't have tape in it! Crazy. I live an hour away too, so it isn't convenient to just pop back over. You'd think they check! Especially since it was behind the counter glass at the front. Well, not exactly a customer friendly store. Last time I was here was maybe 2 years ago. Bought a Beach Boys cd (among others) only to get home and discover the CD inside the jewel case was not the CD displayed on the front and back cover. When I went to return it a few days later, they refused to give me a refund and only offered a credit. It was their screw-up so I wasn't too happy only being offered a refund. Today, I returned to the store (for the first time after the previous experience) and had my small-medium size dog with me. They told me no dogs allowed. They said I would have to hold him if I brought him into the store. Needless to say, it's a bit difficult to flip through cds while holding a 40-pound dog. After a few minutes I realized it wasn't going to work and left. I was very surprised I couldn't bring my dog in. Had not run into this before at any record/cd store. They didn't even say sorry or anything when they told me no dogs. Certainly, they are entitled to set their own rules but considering the store wasn't crowded and he would be on the leash, I'm not sure why it was such a big deal. read more

I have shopped here in the past and not found much of anything. All that changed yesterday. they are having a 30th anniversary sale and everything is 30% off. l spent close to 3 hours and found approximately 95 CDs at a cost of slightly over $500. it was probably the biggest single haul I've ever had. when I was done shopping one of the employees took the CDs and removed the theft cases, and by the time he was done there was no line to pay. he also got a stool for me to sit on while I waited. I've only every come to CD Trader during their Record Store Day events. They do a great job of streamlining the whole thing and making sure everyone knows where to go and can get in & out in a timely fashion. The staff is also incredibly friendly and always knows what they have on hand. It's a wonderful experience (something I can't say for other record shops I've gone to on RSD). I also noticed this past event that there is an amazing collection of Criterion DVDs all at fantastically affordable prices! If I wasn't in a line that was moving I would've spent plenty of time looking over things & pick up a few titles. I will absolutely be going back just for that section! Parking for the shop can be a bit iffy. It's not the biggest of lots & it is in an area with a few other businesses. Just be ready to potentially have to find some street parking. read more

I was able to take my time and for awhile was one of only 2-3 customers in the store. I would have given five stars if I had been offered or approached with any customer service in helping my search. We've heard of CD Trader, but never checked it out. We were driving by during the weekend, so we decided to stop by. The store is pretty big, just a few customers. They have a bit of everything, movies on Blu and DVD, music. Great selection, pretty well organized, decent prices. They close at 6 pm, I would have browsed longer, but some other time. My husband found some movies he was looking for a while, so that was nice. Decent customer service, fun place to check out. Decent parking in front. There's a $3 bargain section. This is my second time in, Their selection is large, but they have other stores with big selections as well!! First their is no customer service at all!! Try and get helped, they are totally disinterested, and that is the problem! They call themselves a whare house store, go to a section, and have at it!!! When you ask for help they have a blank look on their faces. They want to do stock work, and ring up the sales only!!! No personality, or interaction, with the customers. Its a shame because they are not the only game in town. It may be old school, but you can still walk into a retail store, and get customer service!!! If you come here to trade or sell, look elsewhere. The owner offered me $30 for a small box of records I knew were worth at least $1000-1500 (I was looking to sell around $500). The owner even admitted he knew they were worth that much but didn't want to budge on the price. I declined his offer in an instant and took my box and left. I drove over to atomic records. Atomic gave me $645 for the box. CD trader is not a place to sell, trade, or buy records. I feel very sorry for anyone who shops here. read more

This place is always a double edged sword-- it seems to depend on the day, and the staff members whom you interact with. Some treat every paying customer like they're going to steal from their store and make them feel awkward, and some are very nice and welcoming. I do understand the need for anti-theft measures, especially in this area-- but the fact that they will put price tags on the paper label of the vinyl itself is the most ridiculous method of anti-theft I have ever seen. Occasionally, they don't look at where they put the price tag and put part of it on the runout groove, causing the record label to tear and the runout groove to be messed up due to having to tear the price tag off. As an avid record collector who just spent $150 at this store, I am not happy with the fact that they are not taking good care of their product. read more

A legendary record shop renamed and apparently relocated. Because I was in the general vicinity recently, it presented the perfect opportunity for a recon mission. I have to say that upon entering it's obvious why it's called CD Trader, the vast collection is largely digital media, including DVDs, but there's a fair collection of vinyl too. I thought the best stuff was up on the walls and slightly out of reach (for me) cost-wise. A Monarch pressing of the famous Robert Ludwig mastered Led Zeppelin II fetching $250? It's actually a good price compared to many Ebay auctions I've monitored. Browsing around is still fun and I was also glad to see a large number of books on music (used and generally out of print) and there's even a Lego panamera of the store up front. The staff were friendly and I will definitely return to browse Jazz and take a gem off the wall home! read more

The inventory of this store is great, I am grateful that there is a record store like this so close to home. I take no pleasure in hurting a business that I like and enjoy. The reason it is getting a 1-star review is because it is horrendously dusty and unsafe. I was in there for 20-minutes without a mask on, and when I left I immediately felt a stinging pain in my sinuses. I believe this is due to all the dust I inhaled. I used a nasal rinse when I got home but that stinging pain lasted for 2 days. 5 days later I am still congested and having an itchy throat. I went to an ENT and they said my sinuses are very irritated. (I also tested negative for COVID) I went camping a month before this and had dirt rings around my nostrils, and I am having a worse reaction to being in this record store for 20 minutes! I shared this news with my family and my mom said she suffered from similar symptoms when she visited the store. If I ever go back I'll be wearing an N-95 at the minimum. I am posting this here to warn others. I'm a 26-year old man and if I am this sick immediately after leaving this store, I'd advise you to proceed with caution when visiting. read more

I have given this establishment 3 chances I go there specifically looking for dollar bin records to maybe sample and make a beat from their selection is atrocious especially when compared to my newfound favorite record store freak beat records in Sherman oaks it shows a glaring difference of how bad this establishments wares are I went in here today to see if they would take any of my records ones by the way that I have bought from them I was even willing to take store credit they didn't take one of them also a woman behind me came in with a bag of Cd's and they suggested she goes to good will to donate them I don't like there attitude the staff who work there are middle aged music nerds who aren't very friendly I definitely will not be giving them one more dollar of my business they don't deserve it instead of patronizing this place I would suggest you go to freak beat records in Sherman oaks they are friendly their records are in mint condition not scratched up and warped like cd traders are and it is a much better buying experience and you are not getting cheated read more
