We've been coming here for many years. The quality, convenience, consistency have all gone down drastically. The prices have skyrocketed. The recipe for the Asiago bagel has changed. I have been going to the Bagel dock for about 7 years. We are snowbirds, so we go that often. However, we went the other day for breakfast. Coming from NY we love our BEC on a toasted buttered roll. As counter person was ringing us up, I noticed that there was an up charge for butter-$1.06. I'm sorry but that's ridiculous. I guarantee they are using approximately 1 teaspoon of butter, that becomes to more then $24/ quarter lb. Talk about scamming your customers. It cost us $22 for 2 BEC sandwiches w/1 cup of coffee. That's about $5 more than I pay in NY. I am by no means cheap but I really don't like being taken advantage of. We decided after breakfast, we will not be returning. Wow wow wow!!!!! Passed through calabash on the way home from the beach (around a 4 hour drive for us) and stopped in bagel dock for a quick breakfast. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It was amazing!!!! It's deli style, so you order at the counter.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]While you wait to order, you are surrounded by pastries, donuts, drinks, and other goodies to look at and/or add to your order.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]It feels and looks like a New York deli.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The staff was so nice and while I was waiting for our order one of the owners, Brian, came up to talk to me. He told me that the place is owned by several firemen, and it is NY style. He, himself, is from NY and was a first responder during 911. He told me about the community and how they make bagel dock so unique! They make their own coffee beans and sell bags of it, and when you buy hot coffee from them, it's this ultra purified water that they use. I can't remember the exact process of the purification despite him explaining it. It seems very complex, but it paid off as it was the best coffee I've had in a long time. The food was just as good, I got an everything bagel with steak, egg, and cheese. The steak was thinly sliced and so tender, egg was hot and fluffy, cheese was melty and helped keep the whole thing together. When they say an everything bagel there they mean it! It was not like any you could get in the store, SO much flavor, I cannot describe how each different little thing hit my taste buds. It was a symphony of deliciousness. I liked that the bagel was a little thinner than others I had because it doesn't take away from the fillings. The hashbrown was just as good, hot, and fresh. I ended up getting one of their sticky buns to munch on the ride home, and it was true to its name, sticky, sweet, wonderful. Good-news/Bad-news and I'd like to start with the good news...specifically, my bagel sandwich was deLICIOUS! Having fasted for lab work prior to walking in, I was ready for everything on the menu! "Amber" (at checkout) was so kind, able to help me to focus and answered my list of questions, as I settled on white fish salad on an olive bagel, lightly toasted, w/ lettuce & tomato. The sides were a pickle and (of 3 options) coleslaw. My beverage was a canned cream soda. Other than the specific sandwich described above ($16.80 in total), what I was served was so disappointing for me and embarrassing for Bagel Dock Cafe considering the "big world of bagel establishments" and what Bagel Dock COULD BE! Straight out: my sandwich was a MESS! And by the time I struggled to finish, it was saturated and very difficult to pick up. Before it arrived at my table, it appeared to have been either dropped, landing upside down & quickly rescued...or...slung across a table/counter, resulting in serious misalignment...or...well, someone just might feel better to 'fess up. Do I return to Amber with my new dilemma? My hunger drove my hope in a promising solution. Unwisely and armed with several napkins, I tackled my MESS. Later, as Amber walked by, I'm grateful she inquired about how I was enjoying my lunch. I did share (the above) and show her my MESS to which she assured she would "speak to those in the kitchen". So, the pickle was a very ordinary pickle. Canned soda is canned soda. And the coleslaw was the same icky sweet coleslaw from any grocery store and takeout chain...nothing special to add to my "good news" column. They charge you to use your debt card, they charge extra for cheese in their advertised Bagel Sandwiches that have a meat, egg and cheese. I had to call in and ask about the extra charge. The cashier refunded the order and asked for my card number to recharge me. Messed it up and refunded that one. In the end I paid more for that meal then I did the day before. Then when I post to Yelp I get blasted, maybe you should have checked the situation out, before you started on me. Bob took the post down so no one could see what he is really like. owner's 5th update and reply to my review, desperation: "with over 1000 goggle reviews"....funny these over 1,000 GOGGLE reviews indicate that the customers need to find new GOGGLES that provide them with more clarity when visiting this business...lol...GOGGLES....hysterical. So sad. I haven't been here for a few years and found out during my recent visit that there is a new owner. A new owner with a water filtration system that makes the bagel extremely chewy and tough. The customer service wasn't awful, but it definitely was not good. No one seemed happy. They don't serve mini bagels anymore, I was told no one ever ordered them. I don't make bagels, but I think they rushed the everything bagel because they were initially out of them. I waited a few minutes while it became ready and honestly it was flat, about 1/4" thick. I know prices have increased, but I think $14 for two bagels and cream cheese is excessive. For great tasting bagels like Carmine used to make and excellent customer service, I recommend going to the Bagel Dock Express in Shallotte. No matter how many times the obsessive owner edits his response (4 times now) and uses it as a sales pitch, I stand by this review. And NO, their chewy/tough/pancake thin bagels are not an improvement over any bagels I have had previously, no matter what they say they are doing. read more
