Such a nostalgic and delicious place to eat for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. This retro-diner went all out with their 1950's themed black & white checker decor: booths to bar stools, jute boxes at each table, and HWY 49 attire. We were greeted with smiles, the staff were attentive, the food was served quickly and was delicious. We went for the classics: bacon cheeseburger with curly fries, chicken tenders with fries, and chicken club sandwich with tater tots. Can't wait to try one of their ice cream floats next visit.

Sadly very mediocre food. This is for the Auburn, CA location. Restaurant was busy on Saturday night. Friendly but slow service, despite plenty of staffing. Long wait for food. What i got was stale STONE cold OLD beef on my sandwich (pictured) Obviously sitting around for awhile & reheated. No flavor , completely dried out. Most likely microwaved, because it had one or two hot spots. I let our server know and she was cool. Took it back. Offered to remake or get me something else instead. My friend already was eating his dinner and I had to wait another long period of time for something else which was HEAVILY processed , compressed fake frozen beef. The only thing that was somewhat ok, was the french fries. Had a little seasoned salt dished a little luke warm. But by this point after driving four hours. I ate it. Huge letdown. Mel's diner used to be one of our favorites, but steadily went downhill , after pandemic. It's been a favorite of ours for decades I've even been to both locations in San Francisco, CA. Mels kitchen and mels diner which were fantastic and fresh sourdough. This place definitely needs a huge renovation with management, and food supply. I could've walked to the Bel-Air Raleys nearby, and cooked way better food myself. This place could be such a success if they didn't cut corners

Lisa was one of the best servers I have ever had. Helpful , great with my son . My sister in law was having a hard time turn her night into an amazing night . Will come again food was great. Everything came out fast. Lisa made the environment. Amazing made us feel really comfortable would recommend.

Came in about 3 PM on a Friday afternoon and it was totally dead in the restaurant. Ordered a San Francisco burger and fries. Took about 20 minutes to get my food despite the fact that there was no one in the restaurant. Minus one star. Also, I was not asked how I would like my burger cooked and it came out about medium well. Minus one star. Burger was OK but not spectacular. Service was good, people were friendly, restaurant was clean.

This crispy chicken sandwich was tasty! (This was my last visit from a year ago)

Can I just start off with how amazing this Original Mel's is!? Oh, and I need to mention, there are family recipes special to this location that I need to try on my next visit! We walked in after 9pm, and although Mel's would close by 10, we were welcomed by Sam. After seating us, he let us know our server, Jenna, would be with us shortly. As we looked over the menu, trying to decide on what to eat, we had a chance to get excited about the mini jukebox on the table. There were 100's of songs to choose from. It was brightly lit inside with antique looking frames, signs, and posters on the wall. There was plenty of seating available at booths and tables. After Jenna came by and took our order, we picked our songs on the mini jukebox at the table. Only after paying can you pick the option to have the music play at your table. I believe it's $.50 for one song, $1 for 3 songs, and $2 for 7 songs When our my Steak Sandwich with the loaded fries and Club Sandwich with Onion Rings arrived, they looked picture perfect. My boyfriend did taste great, but my steak sandwich was unfortunately overcooked. Jenna went to get Sam (turns out, Sam is the manager! ) and although it was even closer to closing, they put in an order for me off a crispy chicken tender sandwich... it was recommended. However, I did wish I got it the regular way. We boxes everything up to take home and after Sam found out I was not going to eat the chicken sandwich, my boyfriend was and I was just going to finish the other half of his Sandwich, he just took the meal off. We chatted about how this Original Mel's is a franchise and that there are specialties on their menu. We absolutely enjoyed our dining experience! The Original Mel's crew were friendly and welcoming and that makes the perfect dining experience when you can enjoy and look forward to the employee's shopping back by and chatting with you! I can not wait to come in and try their ribs, meatloaf, spaghetti, and lasagna! From what I hear... those are family recipes!

They also have some wonderful car shows

This is my kind of place. The food is very good which being a vegetarian is hard to find sometimes. My husband really likes a couple of their dishes, but most of all a great hamburger with a malt of course. I love their vegetarian hamburger smothered in grilled onions. Ymmm. And occasionally I will be naughty and have a malt as well. The staff is great. They start with greeting you with a wonderful smile and a welcome. The service is friendly, quick and accommodating. And of course the ambiance takes me back to those fun years of growing up. Thank you to Tony, and all of his staff. You are the greatest.

Lisa Ford, the co-owner, went above and beyond in every possible way. She designed a menu within our budget, created a customized bar menu, and she and her amazing team decorated, cooked, served, and made the patio feel warm, beautiful, and welcoming. They truly handled everything with such care and excellence. We were able to play our own customized Spotify playlist on the back patio for a fun Yacht Rock Friday night feeling, and their IT/AV support, Randy, helped us play a personalized video of the couple on the patio TV throughout the evening. It made the night feel even more personal and special. The food was truly the chef's kiss, the beer by Brian Ford, co-owner and brewmaster, was incredible, and the service was outstanding. Trista and the wait staff were fun, attentive, and made our guests feel so well taken care of. One of the best parts of the evening was seeing our son and daughter-in-love so happy and surrounded by incredible family and friends who enjoyed honoring and celebrating them. Our guests could not stop talking about how wonderful the food, service, atmosphere, and overall experience were. Auburn Alehouse is family-owned, community-forward, and an incredible craft brewpub. It is a wonderful place for private events, date nights, gatherings, celebrations, or simply a great meal with great beer. If you are in Auburn, driving from Reno to the Bay Area, or heading up the mountain, stop here. They are also a fantastic choice for private events and can work with your budget. They even host private events at their Annex across the street. We are so grateful we chose Auburn Alehouse for such an important family celebration. Highly recommend! I was one of the pie people. Having had Ikeda's Marionberry Pie before, I knew the quality and expected such. The quality was there and I liked how the pies were readily available for you to grab and go. What made a terrible impression and made this visit one I wish I did not take, making me give 3 stars out of 5, was the young woman who checked me out. I ordered 4 pies and two were gifts so I asked for two extra bags. She answered in an annoyed way that they're $.25 each. No problem I said and paid for them. This extra one minute really seemed to have bothered her and it's terrible that she made me feel unvalued in such a short amount of time. She seemed to be eager to help the party behind me, which is great but she had no finesse in her customer service. I believe she could've made my experience completely different and still acknowledge the people after me. She made it seem as if I'm less important of a customer than they were. She also didn't bag my 4th pie which was awkward because she gave me the bags there. I'll be back but I won't be in a hurry like I was before. These small personal nuances are what makes small businesses great. When you're client facing it's so important to know this. It doesn't take much to be kind or provide great service.

Well, no disappointment here! It was on a Thursday morning- people were there eating, more then kept coming since it's almost lunch time. The server gal is super sweet, prompt, and came back plenty of times asking if everything is alright! I had the hot Reuben sandwich with a cup of their clam chowder while my husband had the fish and chops and a bowl of clam chowder. LOVE the soup! Nice balance of creaminess, taste and enough clams! Filling and satisfying on its own. The sandwich was also tasty- enough that I had to bring back half to take home. Husbands fish and chip which was on their special of the day was a bit disappointing- he said wasn't as tasty as he hoped and could have been a better serving size. Overall, nice place to have breakfast or brunch; cute place to chow down since liking at everyone's else's food- serving size it quite hefty! Yay! Definitely coming back more often!

I don't know what was going on back there, but the servers barely made rounds to our table, didn't even ask us if we wanted coffee, and when we asked one server to check on our food. All she said was "it would be out soon" and we heard that for the next 10 minutes each time we asked. The restaurant itself seemed pretty clean although the bathrooms definitely could use renovation. You can just tell that either they have so much business they don't care much about service or they're just not quite sure how to dial everything in to balance the front of house and kitchen delivery. If I have any specific suggestions to offer: tell your customers upfront about your kitchen wait times. Nobody wants to wait an hour for breakfast food. Make sure to follow up with your customers and ask them if they want anything else to drink besides water it seems like a really easy way to make extra money.

Maybe on the pricey side but I think it was very fair for the quality they serve. On a Sunday afternoon it was a constant stream of customers, but they have some indoor seating and plenty of covered outdoor seating with misters. Ketchup and water dispenser available along with packaged condiments like more ketchup, mustard, mayo, and even malt vinegar. Names are called on the speaker and they have several windows to pick up at. Orders are placed inside or outside at the window. It's pretty neat and makes for a perfect blend of updated/nice with great old school charm. I ordered the Guido (pastrami burger), halfsies (family size of fries and onion rings, opted for waffle fries), and a vanilla twisty with heath bar. The Guido is excellent, but you have to know what you're in for. With the pastrami and the deli mustard, it tastes overwhelmingly like a pastrami sandwich and less like a burger. But the patty, cheese, and veggies do add something to it. It's also very messy, but it was delicious. The onion rings were excellent. They have that smooth batter style, sorta kinda like tempura. My wife prefers the panko style so she was more into the fries. For the fries, they were good but I'd probably opt for normal fries next time instead of waffle fries. I was expecting something somewhat similar to chick fil a, but these were a little on the thicker side and almost had the texture of potato wedges. I'm also not a big fry seasoning guy, and these were well seasoned. But that's a me thing. We still ate them all and you know when I come back I'm not leaving here without fries. The twisty was really good. I might be the only one, but I'm such a sucker for heath bar when I saw it on the menu I had to order it. The ice cream was really good quality. Had a great texture and taste. They were generous with the heath bar. I'm aware I took down a disgusting amount of food, but I think if I could change one thing I'd get the larger size of the twisty next time. It was really good. Wish they had a location closer than 30 mins up the hill, but that won't stop me. Note that my wife asked about the black bean patty and it has cheese in it so it is vegetarian but not dairy free or vegan. So if you go that way, there's that. Not much for you besides fries and dole whip.

I went w the Guido adding pastrami to their 1/3 lb patty. Their homemade burger sauce is a thousand island relative. Maybe a touch too much sauce but uber tasty. My wife had the Double D burger - double the patty!!! The waffle fries were well prepared and wonderfully seasoned - maybe some of the best fries seasoning in a long while. Mom took on the "cream" side w a Mocha Malt. It was thick and wonderful. The place is a counter order then pick up but that's just fine. It is nothing fancy inside but it gets the job done....Some small fly battles but great food. We will absolutely be coming back!

First, we loved this place when it was the original owners. It was always a 10/10 experience. However, since the new owners took over, it really has been a disappointing experience each time; we keep going back hopeful, but I think we've hit our limit. The positives: the menu is creative and has expanded, a great outdoor seating area with fun events throughout the week, and one of the employees (younger tall guy) is super helpful and friendly. The negatives: lacking attention to detail, customer awareness and warmth, and longer than normal wait times. Our last visit, we walked in and were hardly greeted though being the only ones there. We ordered appetizers and drinks. We finished our drinks well before our food came out, 45 minutes later. It took so long we went in to check to make sure they hadn't forgotten. The table next to us was also extremely perturbed because their food took 45+ minutes, for it not being busy. One of the guests asked why the hold up on food and the response was: "well it's Thursday after being closed for 3 days and we weren't as prepped as we thought; that's what happens in restaurants. You can take it to go." I also ordered their Macho Salad, which came without any dressing. Just lettuce and a few toppings. It's disappointing to spend a decent amount of money to have pretty poor experiences. Unfortunately, we won't be coming back.
