I have to say, this place was hands down the best breakfast spot I've ever eaten at. The food was phenomenal! Literally anything you order on the menu comes out far better than expected. The service was amazing. They're patient and very accommodating. And the restaurant has 3 huge different areas to eat in, whether you like something a little more private, more family oriented or just wanna watch a game at the bar. Found this place on Yelp as I was in the area for a wedding, all the way from San Jose! So glad we chose to go here for brunch today around 9:30 am! I got the crab Benedict, and everything was perfect! The portions are huge. My fiancé got the bacon Benedict and he finished it all. The service: our waiter was very nice! I celebrated my clients birthday yesterday!! Happy Birthday, Dianne!!!! She picked Awful Annie's so she could enjoy an Awful Annie's Famous Body Mary! It had a touch of spice and was garnished with celery, a green olive, a spicy green bean, pepperchini, a lime, and a pearl onion. For lunch, we decided to order of the weekend specials menu! I ordered the Carnitas & chorizo Huevos Stack and she ordered the Chicken Fried Steak Dip... service was good. While we waited for our food, my client had to use the restroom twice. From where we were sat, it was quite a long walk, but it was an accessible ramp she was able to use since she has a cane. The steps would've been too much for her. When our meals arrived... both were stunning. My huevos Stack was not all it was cracked up to be. Although they had great crispy tortillas underneath, it had a lot of other soft foods on it that didn't give it much texture. Refried beans, over medium eggs, pico de gallo, red enchilada sauce, and not much meat on it to go around the plate to even it out. Dianne's Country Fried Steak Dip looked and tasted like it was created by someone that knows their breakfasts! Between 2 slices of parmesan toasted bread, there was a thin country fried steak, with over medium eggs, cheese, and BACON!!! And a side of gravy to dip into. That was a million times better than the huevos Stack! So I politely asked our server if I could switch to that special. She got the order in right away and it was out fast. Every bite had the perfect amount of flavor and their sausage gravy tasted insanely good! Both my client and I went home worth half of our meal. I was really looking forward to breakfast at Awful Annie's, especially since it's such a well-known local restaurant. Unfortunately, the food was a disappointment, although the service was excellent. I ordered the biscuits and gravy (thankfully, just the small portion). The gravy tasted as though it was made primarily with flour, butter, and water, lacking the rich, creamy flavor I expect from good country gravy. The sausage didn't really taste like sausage and was broken into tiny, almost crumb-like pieces that added very little flavor or texture. My breakfast companion also ordered the biscuits and gravy and barely ate it. She added a blueberry pancake, but it contained very few blueberries--just a handful inside and a couple on top. The pancake itself tasted more like it came from a commercial mix than from scratch. The maple syrup also had an unusual flavor that neither of us enjoyed. On the positive side, the hot spicy cinnamon tea was absolutely delicious, and our server was friendly, attentive, and provided excellent service. I always hate leaving a negative review because I know restaurants work hard. I hope this was simply an off day in the kitchen, but based on our experience, the food did not live up to its reputation. read more

Came here on the way home from a road trip, and had to try something I spied on the menu a day or so previously - I like to plan my attack! I ordered the parmesan crusted grilled cheese benedict - a mouthful just to say, let alone try to eat . . . If it were JUST the Parmesan-crusted grilled cheese, I would have been happy as a clam. But add the Benedict (2 poached eggs and hollandaise sauce), and I escalate to a happy abalone. Well, you get the idea! I ordered with fruit on the side. And extra Hollandaise. One major ding: I asked if I could order a half sandwich and Jackie said yes, which made me happy but when the bill arrived it clearly said "1/2 sandwich" but they charged full price. I guess that's where the "Awful" comes in. She was too busy to ask and we actually had to ask a busser for a to go box and our check. We found this disconcerting. She should have told me the price would not be discounted. Left a bad feeling with us. The food is very good. We ordered the onion rings which were $14 but yummy. Awful Annie's is awfully good! This is a must-stop if you love breakfast foods. They have BACON FLIGHTS and four pages of breakfast delectables. I had an omelet which sadly I ate too quickly without thinking of sharing the photographic evidence. The waitstaff were lovely, always right there when I was thinking of another cup of coffee. If there is anything negative to say, it is that the coffee is fresh and strong but not memorable. But I am a coffee snob, so take that into consideration. My 20+ year old son, whom I have seen devour whole plates of food without pause, could not entirely finish his plate of pancakes. He was very excited to take home the leftovers, though! I came with a group of 11 after a hike, and we were smart to make a reservation because it was busy when we arrived. We still had to wait about 20 minutes past our reservation time, but we stayed patient. The restaurant is big with multiple rooms, and we were seated in the back near one of the bathrooms (not sure if there were more, honestly). I ordered the Carne Asada Benedict, which I'd heard was a must-try, and it didn't disappoint. I do wish it was a bit hotter - it was the last dish to come out, so I'm not sure what happened there. The rest of my group ordered a variety of dishes, like the steak "sandwich" which is actually open-faced. My cousin missed that in the description, so his reaction when he got it was hilarious. There were other dishes too, which I've pictured but can't remember the exact names. Food looked great. Enjoyable meal. Will we return? Maybe not, but we had a good time. Now back to the dessert. We were all really hype to try it. We asked our server about the portion size, and she gave a hand gesture that made us think it was small and not really shareable. Turns out, it was large. We all ordered one each, but it would've been great if it actually tasted good. We all agreed it didn't meet expectations. The brandy sauce was too strong, and the texture wasn't hitting. After some mediocre hotel breakfast, decided to try this place for lunch and it was fantastic. Auburn may be a small town, but the restaurants we tried during our visit sure hit the spot. In a review I saw, the Italian Sub looked really good and although it wasn't authentic whatsoever, it was mighty fine delicious. Plus, the fries with burgers and sandwiches were fried and seasoned excellently. The Reuben was great and had a good amount of meat. Outside, the restaurant doesn't look very big, but inside, there could be like 200 seats and the tables aren't crowded out all. The staff is friendly, the food is great, and the vibe is comfy. I'm a sucker for eggs Benedict. I've had dozens of them at many restaurants. I was torn between the ribeye tips and the crabcake Benedicts, which would both be excellent. But I saw their Parmesan crusted grilled cheese sandwich Benedict! It was a tough choice, but I picked it, oh my God. An amazing sandwich on really thick bread so it was really tall. Every bite was really two or three bites. The crusted Parmesan put it over the top. My wife and I would describe the experience as orgasmic. The hollandaise was perfect. the Parmesan grilled cheese. I must have by itself. It was so good. You could easily make two meals out of this. I managed to eat the whole thing by not having too many potatoes. Wow. And Superb service. On the way to/from Tahoe/Reno??? Stop here for a bite to eat, you won't regret it! Here's the backstory... I have an EV that can now use Tesla Supercharging stations, so when looking for places to charge up, I found a spot in Auburn that can top me off before heading up into the mountains. Let's be honest, once you get into Nevada, there aren't a lot of convenient choices for recharging. I digress... After plugging into my first TS station, up the road was Ikeda's Market (6 min walk). So as I was walking up to grab some lunch, I walked past Awful Annie's. I've always noticed it from the freeway, but judging from its signage, I never thought about stopping in the past. There were quite a bit of cars out front so I turned around and decided to give it a try... glad I did! Inside is a great, casual, wide open space which is great for all party sizes, from one person to twenty. The crowd is mixed and there appears to be a lot of regulars (a good sign). Service was friendly and efficient. As for the food, I ordered a cup of the clam chowder and Annie's French Dip sandwich with a side salad. The soup was delicious and the side salad was fresh and served with a nice Italian dressing (which I ordered). When my sandwich came though, it wasn't the French Dip I had ordered, but an Italian Sub... although disappointed with the wrong order, I was pressed for time and didn't want to make a fuss because the sandwich did look really good. First bite in and I could have cared less that the order was bungled. This sandwich was amazing! As an update, I did stop by again the next day and ordered the French Dip and that was spectacular too! Anyways, this could be my new GO TO on the way up the Tahoe from here on out. We arrived in town in the late evening and passed this restaurant. With such a funny name, we laughed and actually thought they were closed. We had breakfast the following morning. The service was great and a young man clearing tables actually sat us and grabbed drinks. The same young man offered suggestions and was quite helpful. The server was great as well. The food was AMAZING. We had the mexi-scramble and the meat lovers scramble. The fried potatoes were terrific, fruit perfectly ripe, and the toast... a little too much on the toasted side for our preference.
