Wait staff was pleasant. Food was very over priced for what we got. Example, $18 for bacon and eggs with cubed potatoes. Potatoes were hard and had no seasoning, not even a little salt. Seasonal fruit consisted of strawberries. 1 egg is $4.25, 2 was $6, side of "seasonal fruit" aka strawberries is $9. I can buy a dozen local eggs at Roth's for $1.99. Usually my husband and I go in and its so wonderful, from the staff to the food. Never have we had an unhappy experience. Until today. A new young waitress comes over and asked rudely if I needed something. I said a table and my husband. She replied "ohh" instead of seating me she moves onto the next couple, ignoring me. When my wife & I stopped by here 8 years ago, as visitors to Oregon, we both had great experiences here...Now as residents of Salem, we had another 5-star experience with the service and food. On an early Sunday afternoon, there was ample parking in the large parking lot and there was about a 30 minute wait for a table. The hostess and other wait staff consistently transitioned customers in and out of the restaurant to keep a smooth flow...When my wife & I were seated, our server apologized for the wait and mentioned that "they were a little short staffed"...From our standpoint, the wait was minimal and typical at most breakfast & brunch establishments on a Sunday... On this occasion, my wife ordered here usual 2 x 4 entree (2 Eggs & 4 Buttermilk Pancakes) and I ordered the Irish Omelet (see pic below), which consists of Corned Beef Hash, Spinach & Pepper Jack Cheese. Fluffiest omelet ever! Had a veggie omelet, sub pancakes for their hash brown. Their hash browns are diced potatoes. Also had the banana pancakes, which is okay. This place is HORRIBLE compared to the other locations I've visited. I ordered a chicken fried steak with eggs over easy sourdough toast and a side of hashbrowns. The food came and the eggs were really over cooked, sourdough toast was burnt, and they brought out diced potatoes. I brought this to the attention of my server and asked for sunny side eggs instead because they would be easier to make, toast that wasn't burnt, then showed her pictures of hashbrowns at other locations and mentioned that these weren't hashbrowns, but diced potatoes instead. She smirked and said every location is different. So far, this is the only location that's different. Every other location is always spot on with the food and service. This is the only location I've been to that's served me badly overcooked food that I had to ask to have remade and that calls diced potatoes hashbrowns. The first thing I noticed is that the silverware is polished. What a nice touch! Four of us tried different things - everything was served hot and absolutely delicious! Loved the peach pancakes. Eggs and bacon were done as ordered and the coffee just kept coming. Can't go wrong with an OPH! The service was really efficient and nice at this location. The restaurant and bathroom areas were all clean and there is a good-sized parking lot. I tried one of their skillet omelettes this time, which I've never had before, and now I don't think I can go back to a regular diner omelette! What better than here I would say let's dig in on the service shall we. The lady april took our name down and said it would be a 15-20 minute wait which was a good waiting time. In 15-20 minutes we had been called to sit at a table for 6. We all had different orders. I had the apple waffle with a ham and cheese omelet. Wife had a green pepper ham omelet with a side of Hawaii pancakes. I know I know Hawaii pancakes?? Yes ladies and gentlemen those pancakes are amazing and with a citrus syrup which pared amazing. Mom had eggs Benedict and biscuits. Grandpa had cheek chilly omelet and the kiddos had banana pancakes. Omg our server was a lady and she took very well care of us then a older gentleman started taking care of our table which was amazing he did amazingly great with his service everyone here was so nice. I always have such a great experience when I'm here. Servers are always so sweet, and food is always out in a timely manner. Today our server was Joy and she's such a sweetheart. Always makes sure our meals were up to our liking, waters are always filled, and gets us checked out right away! Even though my friends and I always end up sitting there for an additional 30-45 min after we're finished eating to talk.. we didn't feel rushed to get out either. We got there at around late noon we didn't realize that they closed at 1:00 pm we stayed till 2 pm u til finally they told us they were closing I thought we'll maybe they closed at 2:00 pm but then. Pancakes were never my favorite breakfast item, but they've somehow got me on the bandwagon. If it weren't obvious, the Original Pancake House might be *the* spot for all things pancake related. Over the years, this has become a mainstay in the city's breakfast scene, particularly the South Salem location, thus this spot is definitely the less crowded of the two. Seating is pretty good for all group sizes and the parking lot tends to get really full after 10am. OPH has done a good job in maintaining the small town feel with their homey decor and usually cheerful staff. On the weekends, there may be a small wait depending on the time, but for breakfast savants (#1), the wait is usually worth it. On the food front, the pancakes are certainly the star of the show. Their blueberry pancakes ($9) are not to be missed and I feel strongly about their indulgent buttermilk pancakes ($8), especially with a little fruit and powdered sugar. While I'm less enthusiastic about the others, there is certainly enough variety to cater to all pancake palates (#2). Their other breakfast classics (sans the mediocre waffles) are what I'd normally be ordering when coming here. Everything from omelettes to savory crepes to a really killer sausage gravy. I am not a fan of home fries as we have (too many of) them out East, though these ones are billed as "hashbrown cubes" with a slight extra crisp. I can live with this, but I'd obviously prefer the shredded kind. The easy knock for this place is that it's pricey for Salem standards. Understandably the fluctuations have been evident over the last few years and the notion of this being a "cheap, local" spot has seemingly been eliminated. Most of the non-pancake dishes are $10+, which has likely lead many families to seek cheaper options elsewhere. I'm used to these prices (#3) and it hasn't stopped me from enjoying my breakfasts here. I only wish the hours weren't so limited.
