Made reservations for New Year's Eve 2025. The restaurant was busy, but not overwhelmed. Quiet atmosphere, a little bit too dark, and it was hard to see my partner across the table. We enjoyed all the "small plates" that we ordered. The food was unique and very tasty. Since they rotate the menu, only certain items were available versus the wide variety that are posted online. The drinks were average and way over ice, even with mixed drinks that traditionally only has one ice cube, there were so many cubes that I had to remove them to even enjoy. when I complained about the ice cubes the second drink was still served with too many. The waitress that we had was saccharin in her approach and never engaged us on a personal level. We really felt put off by her attitude, specially since this is a mid o high-end restaurant with our bill was over $250. Overall, food 4, drinks 3, service 1. This place was delicious!! Amazing drinks and food. I only took pictures of the oysters but everything else we ordered was amazing. We ordered duck with crispy potatoes, shrimp dumplings, noodles in this amazing sauce with cabbage and crispy shallots and grilled Caesar salad with fried oysters and crispy pork. My most recent trip to eastern Canada had our group looking for a place for a nice light breakfast before departing for home . We looked up this charming little place . We literally walked in as they were opening up. We felt to be made very welcome as is expected with the laid back east coast charm. I ordered this grilled cheese sandwich made with Hokkaido milk, kimchi and fermented chilli sauce. It also came with a side order of restaurant made potato chips. Really cheesy with a bit of a kick to it. It really was a good meal to jumpstart our journey home. Service was great , nice quiet atmosphere, an terrific place for your first , tenth or three hundredth date . Highly recommendable read more

Previous menus have been a lot better. Portions have all been downsized to "small plates". Service, short spoken and seemed rushed. Good music selection, but way too loud (This is common feedback on a lot of their reviews, which for some reason they ignore I guess?) Great decor inside. But overall, meh. Likely will be one of the restaurants that turns over to something else in a few years. read more

We love, love, love Little Oak so naturally looked forward to trying out it's Hydrostone sister. The former home of Brunch fav Epicurious Morsels has been freshened up with white paint, gauzy curtains and a mix of high top and low tables, sleek silver chairs. Decor = check. We had the tasting menu which is sort of like eating the board at Little Oak as it provides the diner with a sampling of all the small plates. Presentation was on point and the flavours were great. Where things went a little surprisingly off the rails for us was with the beverages. Cocktails are batch made so limited to the cocktail menu and no room for alterations. We wanted a simple vodka dirty martini but had to settle for their cocktail interpretation called the dirty girl which included a weird sherry and olive brine. Not quite the clean flavours we were seeking. The other disappointment was the temperature of the red wine which was way, way too cold. So cold we couldn't actually taste the nuances. Luckily we had the opportunity to order a second bottle so asked for one that hadn't hit the chiller. Unlike Little Oak, which is cozy and chill, The Ostrich Club could benefit from a little sound dampening to take down some of the room noise. It was hard to carry a conversation across the table when the place is full. All in all, a great addition to the Hali food scene and much needed in the Hydrostone area. If we go back, we go with insight and will stick with wine - from the basement. read more

Had high hopes for this place but was disappointed. They have done a good job with the atmosphere and ambiance but fall very short when it comes to the food. I never complain about prices and have no problem with all entrees being $25 and up but the issue was that they were literally 4 bites and done. Again, if the food was divine I would be alright with that but it was not good at all. It's a shame. Would suggest eating elsewhere read more

Excited to try the Ostrich Club as I've heard so much about it. Went with two friends for lunch that the interior was very basic almost dark towards the back, we needed to use our phones for light to read the menu. needs a little bit more art or something and no reference to an ostrich at all which we laughed and found odd. Our server was sweet very pleasant and the menu was very limited for lunch but that was OK we were only there for lunch. I ordered a burger and my friend ordered a pasta dish with beef cheeks, The Burger was kind of smallish on size for the price, the beef was adequate, but the burger itself was small, it was suppose to have smoked cheddar and bacon, but I could not realy tell if it was there at all. and my side was a tiny handful of very thin lukewarm shoestring french fries. I had to ask for a condiment which I found odd because they should've provided that, or at the least, offered it. My friend on the other hand was very excited about her dish which looked kind of pretty but when she took her first mouthful was shocked. She asked me to taste it and all I got was a mouthful of salt, someone obviously wasn't being careful with their seasonings and the dish was too salty to even eat. She tried very hard to eat her dish but in the end after two more mouth fulls Had to ask the waitress to come and explain to her what the problem was. They returned with a new plate of food for her in very few minutes and actually the same dish tasted completely different from the first one she received, We both sampled it and were blown away how different it was, so obviously it was a mistake made in the kitchen or an accident and someone tipped over the salt into the food. We ended up sharing a desert that was probably the highlight of our meal. Our bottle of wine was 70$ and just ok. Our server was sweet. But something should have been done for the inconvenience of reordering onother dish! A comp or something! Also the kitchen was very noisy a lot of pans being dropped things being bumped around and very loud, hard to have a conversation at times. Would be go back? Maybe to try a dinner service but we would be wary. I think this is a new Hip restaurant that is more hype than actual substance and they need some work to do to make it better. Would give here a 3.5 for the most recent visit on a sunny Tuesday in August around noon. We may have been the first customers of the day? Within the hour there, a few more tables were taken. Friendly service. My friend is obsessed with their $5 bread & cutter on Birdie's bread. It's different each time, and this day there were maybe five medium sized slices of a very flavorful bread that had caraway seeds in it. Delicious. He then ordered the Chowder ($16 Ns seafood, dashi cream, potato, lardons, house soda crackers) and liked it very much, but felt the lemon taste was a bit too dominant. I tried a spoonful and liked it a lot, with the different textures. My Lobster Roll ($17 horseradish + tobiko dressing, slaw, brioche, chips) was quite good. The bun was long, there was adequate lobster, the flavor of the dressing had a strong dill quality to it for me...kind of messy to eat but not too bad). We chose to try some desserts. My Seabuckthorn Semifredo ($10) was a very interesting dish with very strong, sour topping of possibly pureed mango paste? Ice cream base with edible flowers and a large dollop of a caramel? Friend had the Chocolate Tart w Pine Nut Caramel & cultured Cream Sorbet ($10) which was very good, the chocolate half was creamy but not too rich, mystery drizzle with more edible flowers. (next time I will ask the server for a more detailed description of what the ingredients are, as it's not written on the online menu). Will be back! read more

Very happy with our service and food from The Ostrich Club. We ordered take out (because of covid) and they forgot our beer. When we went back to pick it up they gave us 2 extra. Not necessary but super nice and very appreciated! Two of us split a fried chicken sandwich, a pastrami sandwich and a crab fried rice. The chicken was simple and delicious, the pastrami was everything and it should be and the crab fried rice was a real standout. So tasty with tons of crab. Can't wait to try more from this place! Especially the lobster roll. Prices are fair too, for quality/quantity of food. read more

TL;DR: Amazing food in a sweet space. However, charged for coffee refills on a tiny cup of coffee, and that really turned me off of the establishment as a whole. So I went for brunch on a Sunday. The menu was interesting as well as more traditional, so it is a good fit if you have a group with different tastes and preferences. Everything I ate was very good, all well balanced and cooked. The ingredients were fresh, I really enjoyed everything I ate. If this was the end of my review it would be 5 stars. However, I ordered coffee. The coffee was good as well. It came in a small cup. Think coffee cups from vintage sets, so larger than an espresso cup but smaller than a traditional contemporary mug. A cup of coffee was I think 3.00. At that size / price point I assumed that, like every other restaurant in town that serves breakfast / brunch the cost of the coffee included refills. Well, it didn't. We were charged for every refill we got -- I got two refills, my husband got 1. Now, again, it was good food, and the refills weren't much money. I think my displeasure comes from a few places: * It wasn't clear in the menu the cost was from 1 cup. * It wasn't clear from the presentation of the coffee it was for only one cup (the coffee was poured on a cup per cup basis from the server, from a shared coffee decanter for the entire restaurant. It's not like they brought a small coffee decanter to the table for coffee). * It wasn't clear that the cost was for only 1 cup based on the "culture" of breakfast in Halifax (I can't think of another place that does it this way). * It wasn't clear from the service of the servers, pouring coffee, that this was a paid experience. Now, I don't mind the money, I just think it's sort of grubby to not build into the cost of the coffee refills, or to clearly outline that the coffee had no refills. It just really put me off of an otherwise wonderful experience. I didn't bring this up with the server, because it felt petty and because that's not really my way. Maybe if I had brought up my displeasure they would have "fixed" the issue for me. But I still think, even if I had done that, I would give the same review, because it's the point of the matter more than the actual amount of coffee given for the price. Pretty good food but their marketing to a younger hip crowd. The music is not annoying and it's quality and character but it's way too loud and you have to talk really loud to the person right across the table from you. You lose two stars for that. read more

I have celiacs and was really happy to see some gluten-free options on the brunch menu. Rarely can have crepes and the crepe (celiacs safe) with duck confit was excellent. Great service. Look forward to coming back for another meal. read more
