A friend and I came for a late night drink. Granted we understand that vaccination cards are needed to come inside. The security at the front door basically was giving us a hard time to get in. He asked us for our id's, we showed him...he was basically scanning our ids as if they weren't us, he then asked for our vaccination cards we explained to him we had pictures of it in our phones. We showed him, he said he don't expect pictures of the actual vaccination card. However he allowed the people behind us to show theirs on they phone. Before entering "The Owl", I thought that the owl theme was limited to the outside of this establishment, but I was wrong. Inside you will find countless owl figures and pictures throughout the place. The owls and indoor waterfall make for a unique bar experience, and also the size of this place. The Owl is actually a pretty large bar, but this is not obvious from the outside. If you want a seat or to avoid a line, it is best to come a little earlier in the evening. Even at 10:30pm/11pm there still wasn't any line or huge crowd yet, but I heard that around midnight, that changes. I enjoyed my speciality rum cocktail from their menu, but I kind of wish they would add a couple more speciality cocktails to their menu to pick from. Our bartender also disappeared a lot outside and to other areas inside, so I wouldn't say the service is top notch, but it is what it is I guess. What a beautiful bar! I went here on a date. I had never been. She said it was her favorite. I was impressed from the winking owl sign out front. I didn't get a cocktail I ended up with an amazing pear cider so I can't say how well the drinks are. The bar tender was super friendly. The vending machine has some strange things in there. Like tapes and beer cozies. I also saw they have free music. Which is a huge plus. Behind the bar was a stunning waterfall. This is a good place for dates or just to go alone. I've lived in logan square for 8 years and have been coming here at random since. I never thought it was that great, seemed a bit overpriced for a dive bar, but usually people wanted to meet up there, and i had no reason to complain. I liked the waterfall and the spacious back area where one could get some small measure of privacy. I have seen this place at 3 AM and it is a dance party. I really hope slippery slope is coming back because now i dont feel comfortable coming to the Owl. What happened to me is of no great import. I walked up to the door with my friend (who is latino) and he was asked to show ID. As he was doing that, i stepped around, so as to get behind him and show my ID after. In the course of this i stumbled slightly. The bouncer said, to my friend, "you can go in but your friend cant go in." They said i "two-stepped." I am not sure if you havent been let into a bar, or a nightclub where you dont quite fit in, or told that you are too drunk, but its humiliating. To throw salt on the wound, another person in the area witnessed this and said, "you're too white to get in." Im sure this was a joke but my friend was convinced that they actually didnt want to let him in and they used me as an excuse. Now i dont believe that. Im more inclined to believe i was, in fact, too white. Regardless, the exchange did not go down well. Perhaps asking to be put through field sobriety tests did not do me any favors (and i understand, once the bouncer makes a decision, that decision is final) but i do believe they had a mistaken impression. Pardon me for my social anxiety clumsiness, pardon me for being lanky, but listen to me when i talk. I went to Whirlaway Lounge after and drowned my sorrows, pouring my heart out to the bartender. She said they were concerned about liability. I said, oh, dram shop laws? She said yes. And i said well, i said a lot more than most people that go in there, maybe if they actually listened to me they would know that i understood their concerns. But theyre not interested in that (there was no one else in line by the way). So I know, a bar is not a bouncer. And i know this bouncer wasnt even that bad. But the experience--it wasnt the type of rudeness that people complain about, it was a cooler rudeness, it was enforcing rules on me that more able-bodied people could sidestep. But i liked the Owl, even though it wasnt that great. Its an institution in this neighborhood, here before many others, but sadly, guarded by unreasonable human beings. Go get a shot and beer combo at Cole's for $5 instead of $8 (or go to boiler room and get a slice of pizza too for about the same). Go to Emporium (i have never felt unwelcome there, or slippery slope, or any other bar in the area, period.). Its sad, because i probably would have gone back, plenty of times. Now i just feel like i shouldnt support them. Two stepping does not equal drunkenness. There should be an opportunity for a second opinion. But thats not the way bars work, i know, ive been going to them for 18 years, and that weird antipathy for customers shouldnt be their privilege. These people are capitalizing on drunkenness, and if im not the type of person they want coming to their establishment, well that is their loss. You only get 1 second for a first impression. Its one of those sad truths about life, one of those things you wish people could see. When you look at me, you see what you want, but you dont know me, and you dont care to know me. Im just a useless vessel that pours out money and has no worth. Ill go back to my inferiority complex now, thanks. When i write my suicide note its going to read "Blame the Owl." No witty review here. Simply put, avoid this place. I've been numerous times, and eight times out of ten, the bartenders try to swindle you. Now, I've bartended for years; I practically live in bars. There is absolutely no excuse for the shit that happens here at transaction, no matter how busy. Busy night: "Two PBRs." "$5." Hand the dude a ten. No change back. Doesn't even look my way, or feign as if he's giving me change back before shoving it in his tip jar. Just jams off. This has happened so many times here, I've resorted to carrying around singles as if I prepping for a night at a titty bar. The worst offense made it my last night. "Two PBRs. Can you break a hundred?" "$5," with a nod. He comes back and plops a twenty and five singles underneath and quickly jets to the other end of the bar. Fuck that noise. Now, I wasn't drunk, not even close, and I know this move from working with shady wait staff in my years in the industry. I rush to the other end of the bar, try to get his attention to no avail. Have to get another bartender to tap him on the shoulder, I explain the situation. "No dude, I threw a fifty down, too." Even if you did, that's not the right change, either. $25 PBR rounds better be the best round ever. "No, I only got a twenty and five singles." He exhales, goes to the register, comes back and throws down a fifty and another twenty. Now I know for a fact you kept it, because if not, there would have been a bigger fit about you actually dropping a fifty and twenty under the original twenty five, especially when you're working off a POS system. Giving up the grift so easily proves it, hoss. Also, when one of my friends orders a round, gives you exact change and you go back and ring it up as "No Sale" on the POS that we can all clearly see and jam it in the tip jar...well, not really doing yourself any favors on the "I was innocent of any wrong doing" angle. Bottom line, if you like being swindled and seen as a mark because you're at a 4am bar and could possibly be too drunk to calculate change, saddle up to The Owl. I'm sticking to Late Bar. read more

As much as it pains me every time I have to spend my Avondale dollars at a rival business in Logan Square, the Owl is a winner. Particularly on Tuesday night, with a very wide range of decent craft brews running $2/$3, it's hard to think of a reason not to come here. Images of the giant owl with glaring eyes flash into my head. "Who, who?" he says. "Who is going to be at the Owl tonight?" Me. I'm supposed to be doing homework or something on Tuesday nights, but why procrastinate on drinking when I can get in a couple of drinks earlier in the week for less? The ambience runs a bit too hip and too dark for my tastes, but the curved front of the bar is a proven social facilitator absent from far too many American bars... I actually got hit on by an excessively beautiful woman here once, though she later revealed that she was married and just practicing. The juke is *really* good, using the old full-album format, featuring Sam Cooke and some other classic artists I can't remember. I also love that the Owl kept the old waterfall and Spanish-language PBR sign, "La proxima vez, traiga su esposa" from the La Estrella days. I love scary dives, but La Estrella was a bit too shady for my tastes- I just came for the waterfall, why did they always frisk me at the door? Some day after my Yelp-fueled political ascent wins me the power to redraw neighborhood boundaries, I'm going to reclaim a little swath of land running down Milwaukee to include the Owl (along with the Milkshire Hotel) in Avondale proper, where it belongs. This review is going to get personal. Reader discretion is advised. I'm a simple guy. I work hard for a living, and like to drink in peace with my close pals on my weekday-weekends. Owl is a 4 am bar. I was drinking there this evening when 3:41am rolled around, and my beer neared its end. Consistent Shouting to "leave now" had been persisting for a while, and I...a simple guy and paying customer drank my beer which i had paid for with my hard earned money, expeditiously and politely. The bartender rather suddenly singled my group out, as we quietly finished our drinks, to let us know that we were no longer welcomed to remain in these last 19 minutes. We didn't deserve to stay, while others did. I asked if the Owl was indeed a 4am bar, and was told that they close when they "want to," and was rather impolitely showered with the contents of someone's unfinished beer by said bartender as a reminder that I was unfit to consume my purchased beer in peace, or to maintain dignity in general. Childish, petty antics. Bottom line: I realize that providing service to people is a hard gig. I do it too. The reality is that, if you don't want to do it...you should probably find a different gig. As we all know, the West-side bar scene is run by the hipster illuminati. While we may not know their true identities, chances are, the reason you're going to that hot new watering hole West of the expressway isn't because of their sublime cocktail list or awesome decor, it's because someone who rides a bike really fast but doesn't know how to dance decided it was "rad." Having no desire to be subjected to the odor at Innertown for the entire winter (it's like a funeral in your nostrils), I can accept that and am content to play along once in a while. The problem is, in this instance, too many others seem to feel the same. Simple things like playing my favorite Bonnie Raitt jam on the jukebox or taking disco naps on the bar between whiskey shots have become nearly impossible at The Owl's. With each passing visit, more and more people who are probably not yet eligible to rent a car seem to be in attendance. The back room has become a haven for morose dance moves and bizarre lap sitting combinations. I would guess that some of these deviants are simply Continental alums that migrated North for the winter, but chances are, many of them just earned the right to vote last week. So its been established that I am a hipster. I ride my fixed gear bike to Wes Anderson movies and eat at vegetarian restaurants after, and then I read at concerts. And wax my mustache. I came here with 2 roller derby athletes, which was odd enough, then the female one decided I was funny, got WAAAAY too close to me and started you know, making me smell her finger, striking my arm in a playful manner, grinding on my chest. Big ego boost, but I was keeping one eye on the male roller dude, who seemed unfazed. And so, we danced. Me telling her her finger smelled like barbeque sauce and sadness, repeating over and over that I was in sales and that I talk a lot, insisting that I had a weight problem and that she was only feeling Mr. John Daniels. Looking down Milwaukee Avenue, through the clarity of the air of a crisp fall night, I gazed upon The Owl. And The Owl gazed upon me. He was portrayed on a sign outside of what looked like a bar. It was unfamiliar to me, though I know this area of Milwaukee well... Suddenly, my being was seized. The hypnotic blinking of His eyes lulled me into a daze. I failed to recognize that my mind was helplessly entrapped by His deft seduction. My soul, screaming in terror, tried to flee. But it was too late. The Owl had me. My mind tried to scream, but could only emit a faint "hoooooot..." that drifted towards the skyline like a wisp of smoke. I was yet another victim of the powerful talons of His psychotic telekinesis. I'd like to think that I am much too refined and civilized to pay heed to friends who text at 2:30 to tell me that they are en route to the Hangge Uppe. If you're going to do late night, at least do late night the right way and have a few drinks at The Owl. The selection of draft beer is commendable, with many a craft beer on tap and specials throughout the week. The well drinks and shots are also reasonably priced. The clientele are your mustachioed, horn-rim glasses wearing artsy types which are pretty typical for this neighborhood. As a result, the jukebox is always playing an eclectic mix of songs - on one particular occasion, a Biggie song was followed by Fleet Foxes. If you want to dance, The Owl may not be the bar for you. The bar is pretty spacious and not uncomfortably crowded, but there does tend to be a line once the late-night antics start. read more

I mean, in some ways it's cool: the bar is super long, it's dark, bar stools have backs, it serves beverages and serves them late. Other ways it's not cool: unfriendly hipster crowd that's too-cool-for-school that shoot you snitty looks for not being hipster, painfully slow service especially after 2 am, prices are not on the menu, you can smell the potties from the front door, it's really loud, really crowded, you never get a chance to play your own music on the jukebox as it's already been crammed full of cash hours earlier, and it has a prickly vibe just like the Continental which I'm already not a fan of. I almost didn't check this place out on my recent visit to Chicago based solely on most of the reviews that say the DJ is terrible and they don't play good music. The most recent of those reviews was 10 days ago. I don't know if they got a new DJ or what but Saturday night was absolutely bumping. The dance floor was packed and the DJ was playing some of the best music I've heard at a dance night. 60s soul, funk, disco...dancehall reggae....90s-00s hip hop...all heaters. The place is dimly lit and is more or less a hipstery dive. It is true that it has a slight funky smell. But the service was quick, the waitress and bartender were friendly, and the beers and drinks were cheap. I'll definitely be hitting up the Owl on my next trip to Chicago. read more

I'm starting to get a little self conscious about all of my very enthusiastic reviews, but I'm just gonna go with it. Came here on a Tuesday ready to do some serious drinking and have a life planning session with my friend. Turns out it was $2-$3 beer night. What do you know - I considered it a blessing from the heavens to do some damage. Which I tried my hardest and I ended up spending about $14 total. I wasn't feeling the beer, so I got cider instead. They have 2 that are both delicious - a pear and an apple, both are nice and crisp. Also, the list is extensive, you have more to chose from than Old Style and Miller Lite. Interiors are cute, it's also pretty big and cavernous. It's sort of retro-y, there's mustard colored FRP on the walls with a flower motif (cute AND efficient, I like it) and of course, various owls in forms of statues and lights are strategically placed around the bar. The bar itself is like, 5 miles long, so it's easy to get a drink. I hate it when there is like, 5 feet of space and you have to muscle your way in and inconspicuously try and get the bartender's attention while not disturbing the people you just squished through to get to the bar. The 5th star comes from the fact that there's a grotto with a working waterfall inside. I know right?! I walked in and was like WTF!!! How have I NEVER BEEN HERE BEFORE?! And then I wanted to slap all of my friends who'd come here without me. read more

I went to this bar tonight to celebrate a friends birthday. I'm not a big drinker- I came sober and I left sober. However, after the waitress spilled beer all over my pants, had I gotten pulled over I would have for sure had problems. Early on, the waitress knocked over and broke a glass at an empty table when the place was pretty empty- and when she brought us 2 or 3 drinks later she dumped a can ALL over my pants. When she asked if it had gotten on anyone and I said it had in fact gotten me, the response was "Oh. Sorry.". She came back with a rag for the TABLE. I had to ask to use it to sop up the beer from my jeans and she didn't say a word. If your balance is THAT BAD- don't be a waitress! If it's a bad day? I get it! Just apologize and bring me some napkins! Thanks for the sticky shins. Later, someone I was with saw the employee with dark hair and a beard use the washroom and not wash his hands. The servers here aren't fit to do anything... not well, anyways. The drink that was recommended to me (after they were out of two different basic drinks I ordered) tasted liked a used litter box. The bar is close to transportation and open late, which is a perk. The interior is nicely laid out, there's a cute waterfall behind the bar, and the lighting is flattering for those of us who rush to meet people after work without makeup on (hah). Last time the DJ was more interested in getting a book light to clip to his hat then change the song although people were yelling at him to. Bartenders suck here. I've had to remind the bartender to give me my drinks before Pros Waitresses are very friendly and helpful Great beer selection Has a type of dance floor.... now they just need to get the music figured out. Would have been three stars, but last time we went up and ordered 4 of Beer A and a 1 of Beer B. We ended up with 5 of Beer A, two beers we didn't order, and never got Beer B We told the bar tender we did not order them. That was ignored. We did not take the beers. Instead left them there at the bar yet later they refused to take them off out tab insisting we ordered them. We paid and left and probably will not be back because of that. I remember when this place was a Latin-dance club (some others on here seem a bit negative about the cultural diversity in our amazing city) attached to a seedy hotel on Milwaukee. This said, the Owl is a big improvement. Now, the "all hipster chicks love owls" theme is sort of funny. It reminded me of marketing a-la the TV show "Portlandia" (hey, put a bird on it!). So we were making fun of this place before we even got in the cab to head up. Come on, "The Owl"!? OK, so the place was fun. We went on a busy Saturday night and got in right away. Inside you have a very cool busy room with a big bar and what was a hopping dance floor in the back. I think this place is open very late! read more

This bar gets a bump of a star because i had just gone into rocking horse expecting an ambiance like the owl so when i walked into the owl I was like yes....this is what i was looking for. The owl is a chill bar with a nice water feature behind the bar. You don't see that very much in Logan. Or at all really. They had a nice drink special menu and the bartender was very attentive even with a butt in every bar seat. We were in on a saturday but it was actually v chill and didn't start to fill up until we left around 11:30. They had a cocktail on tap which I believe is a seasonal rotation. This one was very fall themed in flavors. They have a room in the back with no bar that I assume is for dancing. Bathroom was clean and well maintained. read more
