We went here for a late lunch after visiting the Anne Frank House. Hearty meal in a warm, inviting holiday atmosphere with great service. The pancakes are massive and could probably be shared by most with normal appetites. Be aware that when they top it with ice cream it's with three scoops ! I got the Dutch pancake that had cinnamon ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate chips, and vanilla stroopwaffle-like cookies. The pancakes here are made with their classic, historic recipes are kind of like a perfect combination of a pancake / crepe - a pretty thin, light pancake that takes up a whole plate. Had a hard time finishing the whole thing in one sitting and could've easily eaten half and taken the rest home! Service wasn't too shabby either. There is this lightness and milky-ness to the pancake. With every bite, I could taste the velvety cheese. It was less salty than American cheeses and there is this dedicate-ness to the taste. I was only interested in a Dutch pancake and for 17,95 euros, it had all the fixings. Not only did I have my thin Dutch pancake with a grand diameter, but it came embedded with stroopwafels chunks, topped with cinnamon ice cream, and sprinkled with chocolate flakes. The cinnamon ice cream was grand, but it did feel like I was eating dessert rather than breakfast in the end. I could have done without the stroopwafels as the ones on here were clearly from a bag, chewy and cold. I removed them in the end. The pancake's thin, delicate texture was quite superior though -- recommend getting this here! Do NOT recommend getting the Poffertjes as these were a little expensive (6.95 euros) and just deflated and somewhat cold. Get these fresh somewhere else -- the only way to have them! Upon entering the establishment you realize there are a lot of tables, in fact there was a whole section next door and upstairs not being used, but I get it. The place itself was really romantic and cozy. My mom really liked her American pancake, I didn't enjoy the peach. To be fair I omitted the cherry liquor, but the flavor was not the problem. The place is very casual. They have a lot of savory and sweet pancake options as well as some omelettes and other dishes. We ordered a pancake with chocolate, ice cream, and whipped cream, as well as one with lemon and sugar (plus added ice cream). These were delicious and reminded me a lot of crepes but a little bit thicker and with a less sweet flavor of the batter itself. The chocolate wasn't too sweet and it was very rich. The vanilla ice cream added a delicious cool creaminess to the pancake. The lemon one was very mild and not sweet. It had some lemon wedges to squeeze over it along with powdered sugar! With ice cream was also excellent. Overall really loved this place and was happy they accommodated us so close to their closing time. Service was very friendly and we were not rushed to eat once we had our food. The ambiance is cute and it's next to a canal so if you are able to get one of the outside tables, it's a pretty epic view. This was the worst pancake, actually a crepe, that I have ever had. I got the English pancake, which comes with William pears, vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, and whipped cream. Such a simple combination, I thought what could possibly go wrong. The pancake was actually a thin crepe... although there are a bunch of American pancake spots in Amsterdam, this was not it. Because the crepe was so thin, the vanilla ice cream and whipped cream on top of the thin crepe melted into a complete puddle of a mess... making the crepe soggy and gross. I felt like I was digging for the pancake and pear, lol... Moreover, the chocolate sauce was absolutely gross. It had a strong cardamom taste to it and was overly sweet. When we asked our waiter about it, she said she had no idea if the chocolate sauce was fresh or if it was artificial... she checked with the chefs and came back saying that it was just the chocolate they used and that she does not think there was cardamom in it. Even though she saw that I barely touched my food, she did not ask if I wanted to order something different or if they can do anything about it... Lastly, they ran out of orange juice and the only option for water to wash down this pancake was a $3 bottle of water. For $17.95 euros, this was by far the most expensive pancake (even compared to NYC standards, where I am from).
