I came here based on Yelp reviews I had read prior to traveling and was really looking forward to eating the Dutch version of the pancake, as it seems it is a highly-praised treat in Amsterdam. Sadly, I was rather disappointed with this dish overall. I don't know that it is even the Pancake Bakery's fault, but rather, I fear this dish might just be mediocre no matter where you get it. The pancake itself is just...blah, for the lack of a better word. Nothing really stands out about the flavor. Then you get to choose toppings and whatnot, which seems exciting, but really just leads to more disappointment. I had a savory combination of some sort - meats, cheeses - I even paid extra to throw a fried egg on top. Because how bad can something be when a fried egg is involved? The wonder of the fried egg couldn't even help diminish the letdown of this dish. I know that The Netherlands isn't necessarily known for their food, but I had some really enjoyable meals in this country and this one was, by far, in dead last when it comes to rankings. It's like they stole the crepe from the French and did anything and everything they could to destroy it. A quaint restaurant with HUGE delicious pancakes. Some of the best pancakes I've ever had. They were light, made to order, savory, and filling. I got the mushrooms, ham, and cheese. I cut off parts of the pancake without toppings then added syrup to it at the end of the meal. I got both a taste of savory and sweet. read more

Been there yesterday for a late lunch with my wife. We obviously went there for the pancakes and the place did not let us down. We had a delicious French pancake with goat cheese, pinoli, dried tomatoes and honey which waters my mouth just for typing about it and then a banana and chocolate pancake with whipped cream, also very good (but I guess it is very hard to miss with that mix anyway). Sad note is that it is one if the poorest places I been to in my life in terms of cleanliness. Yes, it is thag bad with dust everywhere, even on the lamp above the open top jar with house syrup, what is quite disgusting and really a turnover in a place with very good food and service. The stairs to the second floor had never been cleaned in their existence as far as me and the bathroom was also quite nasty so if you are picky about this basic thing called hygiene, beware. read more

I have to say...we specifically sought out this place due to the reviews. We had a savory Dutch pancake, which is a high crepe, but thicker and not rolled, with Dutch cheese and bacon and then an order of chocolate covered poffertjes. Both were nothing to brag about and I wouldn't have gone out my way for this place. However, it ranked high on Yelp for some reason. Perhaps back in the day, it was all that. The savory pancake was decent. How we the poffertjes, little pillowy pancakes...the chocolate was so bitter it took the enjoyment out of eating something that should have you saying ooh and aahhh! What it did was made me put my fork down. Maybe that was for the best because I didn't need it anway. But, seriously from the places I went if your looking for the best poffertjes go to the market and get them from the vendor---they make a fat kid jump for joy! And, if the market isn't open, look up pancake & waffles. It's a total hole in the wall and service, hey it's usually a one man operation and you pick up your plate. Playing is something left to be desired, but from the savory to the sweet that glob of dough and your liking is oh so good! read more

Get the hot chocolate with baileys and leave. Best hot chocolate I've ever had. The pancakes are bland and there's no sauce. There are gluten free options which is very much appreciated but if you have a serious allergy, steer clear. Also a tiny glass of water is €2... what? read more

Unfortunately, this place is a tourist trap. It is at the underground level and packed with tourists. There is nothing special about the crepes - they come overcooked & burnt. We ordered a regular black coffee and it was one of the worst coffees I have ever drunk. Despite the high Yelp ratings I would avoid this place. read more

I loved this place, best pancakes ever, for Americans this is not pancake but crepes, but anyway it is great for breakfast. They also have eggs and omelettes. Coffee was also fantastic. They open late in the morning and at lunch time could be packed and you have to wait in line, but it is worth every minute and penny. read more

I will give the Pancake Bakery 4.5 stars for food and a 1-star rating for service. Is that Ok? Yes, I am an American and I'm used to attentive service from wait staff. When I was a waitress, my mission was to do all that I could to get the best tip possible. Nope, I'm not ashamed to say it. However good the food was, though, it would not bring me back to be ignored by the waitress from after the time she delivered our drinks. We ordered a delicious bacon-cheese-mushroom pancake--it was easy to share this as it was bigger than the plate. The bacon was perfectly cooked before it was incorporated onto the pancake and then the sautéed mushrooms and cheese were added. Then flipped to render it crispy and gooey at the same time. Lovely! For a sweet pancake, we tried the warm cherries with Cointreau, vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. Yum. The cherries were a bit tart for my husband's taste but I thought they were good. The wait between courses was about 15 minutes. That was too long. Did I mention that our waitress never checked to make sure things were fine nor did she ever deliver anything but our teas. We waited another 10 minutes for our check. Is it really true that service is not important in Europe? Sigh. read more

When I read some of the ratings I thought it'd be a good place... until I got there. First we had to wait for 15 minutes in the line IN the rain although several tables were free... then we ordered 2 pancakes and a cappuccino... the cappuccino was made of 90 percent with milk. The pancakes were fatty, one was so sweet you couldn't eat it, the other one was made with salmon. I ordered the sweet one with banana... luckily the waitress told the kitchen to place the banana on the salmon pancake which we had to pay although it was awkward and uneatable because we ate some pieces before noticing the banana. The price for 2 bad pancakes and a cappuccino, a tea and a coke around 45 Euro... unfortunately 0 stars are not possible. Bad tourist ripoff, better go to a little Cafe. read more

after suffering through countless croques and croissants and awful omelettes in paris, my fiancé and i were looking forward to a nice dutch pancake for breakfast when we arrived in amsterdam. thankfully this warm and cozy restaurant was right down the street from our airbnb. the menu is filled with words and descriptions that will make your mouth water, but they cannot properly explain the bliss that awaits when your plate is delivered to your table. you have the option of enjoying either sweet or savory pancakes. we decided to get one of each. the savory one (bacon, cheese, and pineapple) was insanely delicious. the sweet one (cinnamon ice cream & dutch chocolate flakes) was also incredible. the thick and perfectly cooked slabs of dutch bacon were salty and delicious. to put it plainly and simply: make sure you check this place out! read more

Delicious food, cozy atmosphere and great service! The place is quite big (by Amsterdam standards), so we were seated almost right away (on a Sunday during peak lunch time) For comparison, another really good pancake place nearby (Pancakes!) told us there is a 30-minute wait. The food was brought quickly and the pancakes just melt in your mouth! The portions are huge and I couldn't finish mine, so I asked if I can take the leftovers to go (which is something they usually don't do in restaurants in Europe but I thought it was worth a try because the food was that good:) and they wrapped it up for me. We came here for breakfast on our vacation one morning. There is a HUGE variety of pancakes (one part of the menu has an international theme), with nearly every permutation of sweet or savory you can think of. I decided on the cherry and cherry liquor pancakes. It was served as one large pancake, slightly thicker than a crepe, that had fruit piled on top as well as mounds of whipped cream and vanilla ice cream. The cherry liquor gave the dish a little punch, which kept it from being over-the-top sweet. Definitely a delicious, filling breakfast. Excellent pancakes and the best poffertjes we tried on our trip. Great variety of international pancake choices, both sweet and savory. In case you're not familiar with Dutch pancakes, they're kind of like crepes. Great location, easy to fine, just northwest of the Anne Frankhuis on the Prinsengracht. Amazing huge pancakes, both savory and sweet kinds available. Really terrific. My advice is to share one with a friend if you are not extremely hungry because, as delicious as it was, I could eat only half of a sweet "Dutch" pancake at 10:30 AM. The savory ones ( "French" goat cheese, thyme, sun-dried tomatoes, pine nuts and honey; "Norwegian" smoked salmon and sour cream and cream cheese, etc) looked even better. The service of the restaurant needs to be improved significantly. First they totally forgot my order and after waiting for about 40 minutes, I had to remind the waiter. Second, One waiter offered a glass of coke afterwards. He told me it would be on the house. I assumed it was an apology but the drink was included in the bill. I think if they know you are a tourist and will probably only go to the restaurant once, the waiters or waitresses have no interest in serving you well. read more

You have to fight to get the attention of the staff. They walk past the tables without looking at any of the customers. It took over 45 minutes to cook our two pancakes. The pancakes are very thin so you'll probably still be hungry afterwards. Be sure to ask for tap water because they bring you tiny glass bottles that cost 2.40. Again, don't expect any of the staff to ask you how your pancakes are or if you need anything. Very poor experience. read more
