Came at 6:30 pm on a Saturday evening. The clientele was sparse, the wait staff heavy proportionately. It was a warm and inviting environment, the decorations standard for this bar/restaurant. I sat at the bar to get waited on quickly. As quickly as one came to greet and take my dink order, another asked if she could serve me as she had yet to have a table. Fine ny me. However, the service was not good as she stated doing something else in the middle of making my drink, along with talking on the phone when I was about to ask about my drink. She graciously put the phone down, went back to my half mixed drink and brought it to me. Then she says, would you like something to eat? What??? I gave you my order 15 minutes ago, I thought. I guess my look alerted her, when she remembered and sis oh no, you already ordered, and walked to the register to put it in. Still, a very sparse crowd. Poor service. I also had a glass of water that was clearly tap and not pleasant. Get a water purifier if you're gonna serve tap water My food came after about 45 minutes door to table. The burger was juicy and the fries were good, although they were the soggy variety. I don't know if I'll ever return. Since downtown DeLand isn't a huge spot, not sure I'll be able to avoid it living here. read more

Ambiance - Warm and cool at the same time. It's a cozy little bar/restaurant located in an historic building in our historic, cozy, artsy, eclectic, Southern, sophisticated, down to earth Deland. The decor is a rebellion against the Prohibition and a celebration of the fun and excitement of regaining the freedom to let the taps flow and the whiskey age. The bar is beautifully wood crafted and loooooong. The scale of the bar might give the illusion that this is primarily a bar that serves food. But, you would be mistaken. The bar is, very obviously quite grand. But don't let it fool you. This is, most definitely, an incredible Restaurant. The Food - ...The menu is varied and thoughtfully curated. Whoever put the menu together is definitely a lover of food. Which works wonderfully, for me at least, because I too, am a lover of food. And the food that they serve is INCREDIBLE. This is not a place for the faint of heart, and I probably wouldn't venture in if I was on a diet. Because, although there are delicious salad and vegetable options, many of the appetizers and entrees available are downright SINFUL. The kind of sinful where that first bite hits your tongue and all you can do is close your eyes and moan (hopefully, quietly). Try the loaded chips. I know. Potato chips, what's the draw, right? I said, "Meh...", but my husband persisted and ordered them, anyway. And that is why I will keep him around for the next 15 years and the 15 after that. The chips are covered with a blue cheese fondue and crumbled blue cheese, and I'm not a fan of blue cheese at all. But if I could have licked that plate clean without embarrassing myself, I would have. It is DE-LEC-TA-BLE and doesn't taste blue cheesy at all. It just tastes like creamy, cheesy, bacon-y, crispy, eye closing, heart pounding...heaven. Their risotto is amazing and the TPO Mushroom Chicken is my favorite. Their food has always been fantastic, but with the newly hired chef, it has reached five star phenomenal status. Succulent, grilled boneless, skinless chicken breast that almost bursts with juiciness when you take a bite, perfectly done al dente sundried tomato and mushroom risotto...sigh.... Eh hem...sorry. Where was I? Oh, moving on... Last, but not least, The Service - Somehow, they've managed to find some of the nicest, most patient, thoughtful people in the whole county to work here. They always have a great attitude and they're always willing to take time to explain the dishes and even share their favorites. But if you're venturing out, you should know that this is more of a European dining experience than American. Don't go here looking for a quick meal. The best things in life take time. To create and to enjoy. This is a place to sit down and relax, have a few drinks and appetizers and enjoy each other's company while you leisurely wait for dinner to come. It's a place to take the ones you love or those whom you want to get to know better. Dining at The Parched Oak is not just about the amazing food. It's about the experience. Our group was hungry and were looking for a place without a wait. We ended up here, I had no expectations but was pleasantly surprised. At first glance I expected just your average bar food. The place was clean, but there was a mild smoke smell, so it's something to consider if you're sensitive to that. The staff, however, was extremely friendly, greeting us as we came in, sitting us immediately, and were just overall accommodating. My wife's and my food did come out around 5-10 minutes after everyone else's (we were the only ones to get flatbreads) which was a little annoying, but they were worth the wait. Like I said I was expecting average bar food, but these were some of the best flat breads I've ever had. The crust was more of a peta bread than a crust, which I very much enjoyed. The flavor on them was good and the presentation was wonderful! We will definitely be stopping in again for those flatbreads again soon. read more

This restaurant was shut down on May 8th after the inspectors from the health department found 18 violations five of which were high priority. Those violations included wrote an activity and a stop selling food due to temperature abuse and live flying insects. This restaurant has since then met inspection standards and been reopened. I will not dine in any restaurant that has been shut down for rodent activity and/or bad food handling practices. read more

The service was insane. We asked for tea but were brought soda water. Placed our order, but ten minutes later our waitress said she was ready to take our order. We told her she already took our order and she said to tell her again. She brought wrong orders, then at the end of our meal brought two identical orders in to go boxes. Wild!! This place is amazing EVERY single time!! I get the bowl with shrimp every time because it's so good but my husband and son have tried something different every time. If I could do half stars I would rate The Parched Oak 3.5, but it's good enough for me to round up and not down since I can't. I enjoy the cozy and clean dining room, and the fact that they had both the game and Star Wars on at the bar was definitely a plus lol! Our server was very friendly whenever we saw him but unfortunately there was a long gap we didn't see him and we waited a solid 10 mins for our check after we finished eating even with a mostly empty restaurant. My mojito was very minty which I love, but very bitter. Our server (who made it) offered to bring me a shot of simple syrup which was super helpful of him and make it 100x better. Unfortunately the French onion soup was 90% croutons and barely warm. But the Southwest Steak tip risotto was amazing and I'd go back again just for that! If you haven't been, I'd give it a shot! We came on a slow night for the parched oak but that didn't detract from the experience at all, the atmosphere is fun and welcoming with cutesy stuff all over the wall. The food was absolutely amazing, my partner and I got the steak goat flatbread and it was genuinely one of the tastiest things I've had while visiting DeLand. We got the Manhatten and the dark and stormy to drink, both were excellent, not too much alcohol sting but still maintaining the taste. Quinn was our server and he was so nice and fun to talk too, he improved an already great experience. The service is good and the food is great but it's hard to miss the smell of urine when you walk into the building. In the past I've had the burgers which are 1/2 pound giants with fries, the flatbread is terrific, patty melt - called the chopped oaky melt and the 4 cheese toasted cheese sandwich. All very tasty. I usually eat there during lunch hours and the staff is very attentive - never had bad service. The restrooms are clean and don't smell like urine so I don't understand why the dining room reeks strongly of urine. read more

What we found was strange was that every other restaurant had a 35-45 mins wait and this one, sat empty. The bar tenders made tasty bloody Mary's. It's a cute place it just seems to be missing something and that is why there were 2 other people in there on what should be a busy Sunday. I'm not sure where all the other people visited, but the place I visited was horrible. Whether for business or pleasure, I dine out a minimum of 3 times a week. It's probably more like 4 to 5 times a week. I am usually pretty lenient with restaurants as I have been around that industry on the wholesale side for the past 30 years. This makes me very conscious of their struggles. When we arrived, we were greeted by a young lady who was very helpful with the menu and timely in responding. She made us aware that there was a backup in the kitchen due to a large order being put in. This was surprising to me as the largest table was a 4 top with people who already had their appetizers. But, I get it everyone in the business is struggling with staff. At some point, that young lady left, and that's when the issues started. We had no real server at that point. Just some random people who appeared clueless and over the head in the operation going on. Our appetizer eventually came, fried gouda cheese balls. They were hot and very delicious. So we were all good still. Again, we were told of the wait, so it's not like we were expecting or app or food in 5 mins. Roughly 45 mins later, after we saw another couple leave due to the horrendous service, (apparently, they had been waiting over an hour and had yet to see their entrees), we were debating on whether or not we were going to cash out and leave. He comes our food. So we were like, it's here now, might as well eat. My wife had a fried pickle burger. It was way overcooked to the point that it was dry and was cold to the touch. Her fries were warm enough to eat. I had steak tips over risotto. The risotto was obviously microwaved as the temp was not consistent. The steak tips, what there was of them, were smaller than a dime and burnt. I was hungry, so I ate what there was. My wife did not touch hers. After 20 more minutes of no one coming by to check on us, my wife finally had to get up and head to the bar. She took her food with her and told the young guy working that it was cold and not edible. He simply stated sorry, they would take care of it and would get us the check. We got the check, and they charged us for the burger. My wife had to head back up there and explain to a young lady that she was not paying for something she did not eat. The young lady asked if she had spoken to her server, to which my wife replied, "she left, and we haven't had one since." The young guy was more worried with serving drinks to, what appeared to be, his friends at the bar to handle anyone else. Reluctantly, she took the $17.00 for the burger off. We paid our tab and left. When we left, we noticed that none of the tables had been cleaned off, and most of the plates had half or more of the food remaining. So, one would tend to believe that the others had the same or similar issues. Like I stated above, the single worst dining experience I have had in the past 30 years. read more

the first thing we noticed was how inviting the atmosphere here is -- people laughing at the bar, families cuddled up in booths, mood lighting, & vanessa carlton playing lowly on the speakers. the staff is fun, check on you just enough to not interrupt the conversation, & happily took photos of us! the flatbreads are DELICIOUS! the portion was generous, the bread was soft but had the perfect crisp on the edge, & the toppings were definitely enough to make this filling enough for a meal on its own. the loaded pub chips were crunchy, loaded with feta, & the best crispy bacon bits. the food was a 10/10 for us! the bathrooms need major TLC though. we'll definitely stop by during the next night market. read more
