I don't know if the ownership just changed however whatever change did happen. It was really wonderful. I think it was a new partnership. The partnership is beyond impressive. The two staff who I think co-own paw spa now are really wonderful with the dogs and they're incredibly kind and soft handed. Their energy is just so beautiful & trustworthy. Before one of my dogs used to cry when I would take her there. However, after this most recent change in stewardship, my dog does not cry whatsoever she tail wags. She came back so happy! All three of my dogs came back stunningly fresh clean, happy bright eyed and bushy tailed and I feel very fortunate that they are so kind, accommodating thoughtful. They are expeditious with the work I think they do 4 hands working at one time. So that they can subject the pup to as little fussing with as possible. While just as much if not more attention to detail. Every hair is tended to. No exaggeration. If there's any fees unplanned that require discussion, they will call you during the grooming session and actually ask you. Hey we noticed this or that would you like us to XY or Z? And the extra associated cost will be this for Y and this for Z. How transparent in their pricing and reasonable accommodation is really refreshing. Particularly in a business you don't want to feel taking advantage of its great to have the trust and to feel respected, and you feel your animals are in superior hands. I also noticed these grooms have been the most long lasting work of cleanliness and just a complete change in the nature of the coat in a way that it's so much healthier and less shedding all over the house. The dogs are so much cleaner so much happier for the dogs that required a little bit of dematting due to their thick coats, they those two were a little puffy and adorably blown out the first two days. If you have heavy coated dogs like mine (Pekingese), you need to bring your dogs here. Have them de matted. And bathed etc. They will come home poofy. That's a great sign. Then just wait. Let the hair sit and settle. Your jaw will drop to the floor. The hair is perfect and remains that way. For months. Having the experience of groomed dogs now I realize a groomed dog should leave looking floofy and a little moppet on day one, two and three. If they've truly been cleaned and their hair has been properly groomed. Because then day 4 it's perfect and it's that way for months to come. Not just a week of looking nice. I learned so much from seeing the differences. They just look like they got touched by the hand of light and beauty and love. And as if they were groomed fresh today. So that's the difference. Before their partnership, my dogs looked great for about 5 days. At a week they were dirty again. Or seemed so. Now when we pick them up it's they look floofy and preciously clean and every hair tended. Then after the floof sets oh my word what perfect hair and skin they've had since. The thing I also noticed about these new talented partners whose work is worth every CENT. Don't go anywhere else. Even though I don't like to give out my favorite secret places. This is truly my favorite secret. And I'm sharing because this is life changing work. If you want your dog to be clean for 2 months+ per groom, go here. I placed a call this morning to "The Paw Spa" in Newport to schedule a visit for my rescue dog Zeus for grooming and I was turned away just because he's a pitty. I asked why and the lady who answered says to me it's because the owner doesn't like them. I find it incredibly sad that a business can discriminate against a dog breed without even seeing the animal. I'd also recommend changing your Yelp description "excellent pet styling of all breeds" as clearly not all breeds are welcome at your business! One star - We booked a full grooming session at The Paw Spa - enter the information as requested - Breed Maltipoo. Within 5 minutes of dropping him off and having the groomer Karen start the grooming, they called and said we needed to pick him up because they cannot groom him. Our pup has been groomed for the last 3 years regularly since he was 6 months old and never had a problem. The groomers always tell us he's a good boy. In my opinion, she didn't bother to try and obviously just decided she didn't want to do it. Waste of time for us. **UPDATE to respond to owner** To be fair to us, we did call Karen an hour ahead to ask if we can come a little later to the appointment and she OK'd us to come. We came exactly as we asked. If there was an issue, she could have said no. We appreciate you not charging us for a 1/4 haircut, he looks funny now so hopefully, you wouldn't charge us. Thank you for blaming us for losing money, I don't think that's a way to view customers and opportunities for new business. Also, I am sure you know more than our vet who has classified him as a Maltipoo! I am sure you are better qualified for that, either way, the breed is about a similar weight and size so really, does it matter? Absolutely Amazing! The ladies that work here are so wonderful and listen to your long list of complaints and worries. They always do such an amazing job. We have a golden retriever with horrible skin problems and when I say horrible I mean the 20 vets we have been too say there is no cure to the smell. The paw spa is the only place that is able to clear him or smell and itch and clear up his hot spots. Also they do a fabulous job with completely drying your pup! -They are extremely knowledgeable because they work with the vet next door who is a very great doctor. -I also brought in our small dog who was sprayed by a skunk and they treated him with a good wash and left him smelling sooo much better. -Call the a few days in advance as they are very busy! -The furminator and the special shampoo are worth the extra money if you have a pup with sensitive skin! I had been going to the Paw Spa for about a year because they do give a great bath and haircut. However Debbie the owner pretty much abused my dog in-front of me to prove a point, I asked her to stop. I left with tears in my eyes and went to the vet next door to see if I'm the only person who has seen this or if they've heard of this? She's very angry and mean and I don't want that energy around my dog. I know dogs tend to not like the vets or groomers but this was awful to see with my own eyes. Never again. She should not be in the service field.....she never made me comfortable and I should have stopped when my gut told me the first time she was mean and a little crazy. read more

In response to the comment left by the owner - Debbie: If you add up $57 (still $12 more than what Petsmart charges for a "full groom") plus tip it is upwards of $65. So I stand by what I said when I said my fiance paid $65. And Debbie, you yourself told us that you would charge us more if our 4 month old puppy didn't calm down. That would be an "extra fee", on top of the grooming. You also chose to ignore the fact that his nails weren't clipped at all one time we took him there. Instead of apologizing for that (which most business owners use Yelp to do - to correct problems), you chose to call me a liar. Your comment to my review is further proof of the way we were treated. I should probably give this place 2 stars but will stick to 3 because Karen, on the other hand, was very nice to us. We have continued to take our dogs to Petsmart and have been charged a CONSISTENT $45 every time and have been treated with respect and have never had anyone say anything bad about our dogs. read more

Karen has been grooming my dog for 7 years. He is now almost 16 and I was just told that Debbie won't let her groom him anymore in case something happens on their clock. All the while claiming "they would be heartbroken" if something happened. So make him go to a stranger after all of these years? That's a good solution for an old blind dog who has built trust with Karen? Shocking and cruel. I always wondered why they weren't busy. Please stay away. Debbie clearly you have forgotten to link your "caring" to the actual person who helps pay your bills. Not only did you make your employee deliver your dirty work, you never bothered to pick up the phone to explain your decision and god forbid THANK me for supporting you for 7 years. OLD REVIEW BELOW THIS CURRENT REVIEW. I came to the Paw Spa again after a few years of not living on the Peninsula. I made and appointment and was excited to get both my dogs in the next day. When we arrived at the location, the girl who was going to groom the dogs was a bit rough with them... I kind of excused this and thought, "They will just have to get used to it." And, "once they calm down, they will be OK." I have taken my dogs to several other groomers while living in other areas - I have watched them be groomed - the dogs have always been calm - ALWAYS. When I got back to the "spa," I was told that my dogs were so difficult that they couldn't be groomed properly. I am guessing that instead of being gentle and kind, the groomer must have handled my dog harshly. As I said, I personally have watched my dogs be groomed and they have NEVER been problematic - I will NOT be taking my pets here again. 5 stars for an EXCELLENT visit! Spa owner Debbie has a mother's heart - the right combination of loving warmth and firmness. My pup and I couldn't have had a better first spa day! Migo is a mix of dachshund, shi-tzu, and poodle, with long, fluffy hair. Debbie worked masterfully and tenderly with this scaredy-dog. She was working alone, so my mom, my pup, and I were the only guests, so I was able to go back and "help," but mostly get a lot of good advice. Debbie shared great tips while she was taking the ends off Migo's hair, and I couldn't believe how fast she clipped all his nails. After we left, I almost instantly got a "thank you" email from Debbie. I replied and asked a few more questions, to which she once again wrote back with haste. Debbie is a no-nonsense business woman with a big heart and skill to match. If you are thinking about PetSmart or any other run-of-the-mill shop, I would ditch those plans and make an appointment here instead. It was a few bucks more than the price of PetSmart, but I know it was worth EVERY penny. Also, because of Debbie's personal attention, she was able to find a tick (GASP!!!) that hopped on my little pal, safely remove it, and kill that sucker. Attention Bichon owners and other difficult upkeep breeds, this is your spot! We have tried many groomers over our dog's 13 years and this is the best. Excellent cuts, great sanitary cleaning, good job on the nails and pads and really cares about our pooch. Our dog is a tough breed to cut and usually by the time we take him in he has a few mats to work out. They always do a great job. But if you would consider taking your dog to pet smart for a cheapie cut (shame on you) but the prices here will be higher. But they should be, it's premium service for your loved one. Very very nice gals here! I called the morning of and they were able to take both of my yorkies. When I arrived, Debbie spent some time talking to me about my dogs and getting to know them. I will continue to bring my dogs here...so happy to have found a reputable groomer on my first try since moving to the area :) The only reason I took a star off is because I just looked at their site and the package I bought included a bow and bandana for the dogs...and mine didn't have that...not a big deal but it does look super cute when you go to pick them up. read more

I was referred to the wonderful ladies at the Paw Spa about a year ago. Lola is a Yellow Labrador who "blows coat" everyday....it is impossible to stay on top of all of her shedding, every time we brush her you make a new dog with the fur. Love this groomer and (more importantly) so does my picky Australian shepherd. Here are the things I like: -Whenever I pick her up, she is in the grooming room and not in a cage - Typically it takes 2 hours to bathe her whereas it used to take at least 4 hours when I went to petco and other groomers. -She sheds a lot less after going to the Pet Spa -We are not the most diligent brushers and she used to mat within a few days of going to the other groomers. Now she rarely mats. -Jamie is super friendly and I know my dog is in good hands when I drop her off -Aussies are notoriously picky about who they like and mine likes the Paw Spa the best out of the 4-5 groomers we've tried in the area. -I mostly deal with Jamie but the staff has always been super friendly, helpful, caring and knowledgable. As a side note- I regularly get compliments on my Aussie's coat and how clean she looks. Even 3 weeks after she has been groomed people will approach me, compliment her coat and ask me if she's just been groomed. Their mouths drop (and I am a little embarrassed) when I tell them the the truth. We also get her shaved in the summer and she's never had "clipper burn" or any other irritations. read more

Just had to write as we are so happy with this place! We took our dog here for the first time last weekend, and he had never been to a groomer before in his life and he is 4 years old. Debbie, the owner, greeted us, and took the time to assure us that she was "up for the challenge" of grooming our dog to what he should look like! We were expecting a phone call during the day saying to come pick him up as they could not help him, but instead, 8 hours later, we showed up to pick him up, and he was like a totally different dog. We can not thank Debbie enough for her honesty, time and compassion for her work. We were so pleased with how he looked and will be back. I had been in search of a place that did really great grooming when I randomly meet someone at a restaurant with his dog that looked fab and he said they have been going to the Paw Spa. That was abput a year and a half ago. I think they do an incredible job! They are fast and really care about pleasing everyone. There are some places that are cheaper, but you get what you pay for. I have been to the paw spa several times over the last two years to get my 30 lb mutt bathed and nails trimmed. Even though it is extremely convenient for me, I have learned not to go here. I have had very mixed experiences. Karen is knowledgeable, easy and kind but Debbie is always difficult and rude every time I have dealt with her. Debbie has told me that they will no longer trim my dogs nails because he is too difficult to deal with. But I have never had a complaint at any other location. Overall I was getting the feeling that they are doing me a HUGE favor for bringing my mutt in for a bath. Today was the last straw. I picked up my dog from the Paw Spa, paid $42.00 for a bath (No Trimming), and when I got home I noticed that my dog was bleeding from his eye lid. It looked like a fresh scissor cut which was hard to understand given they only gave him a bath. I called the paw spa and Karen answered the phone and sounded concerned. However, she handed the phone to Debbie who quickly denied that they had anything to do with it because all they did was bathe him and crate him. When I took him in so that Debbie could have a look for herself she still acted un-concerned and denied that they had anything to do with the cut on his eye lid. I have learned my lesson and will not go back to this place. As nice and helpful as Karen is, I just can't continue to deal with Debbie's attitude, rudeness, lack of any customer service, and in-ability to take responsibility. read more
