Terry and the Pawlour saved our dog, Lumi, from our horrible mistake! My dog had terribly matted hair after we gave her a bath ourself (please please learn from us and never give a dog with matted hair a bath before combing all the matted hair through - it further mats the hair into untangle-able conditions). We tried to detangle the hair but our efforts were fruitless, Lumi was so uncomfortable and had such low energy after the bath. I frantically called a bunch of dog salons for appointments and advice - no salon had availability or cared to give us advice but Terry promptly called us back and fitted us in that day just because she couldn't stand the thought of our dog being uncomfortable. We were first-time clients at a salon and she taught us that matted hair pinches the dogs skin and showed us how to better groom Lumi. Even though we only asked her to detangle the matted hair, she also took initiative and gave Lumi a bath and beautiful cut. This place is no-frills but really knows how to take care of double-coated and long-hair pets without shaving them down (something every other groomer told us would be necessary). We also saw so many other types of dogs there that were happy as can be. We will be forever clients from now! Thank you so much Terry!! Feeling conflicted over this. Until our pup's most recent visit here, we were extremely happy with the Pawlour! Our dog Ozzie was rescued from flooding and is extremely afraid of baths/water in general. He was a very shy and nervous dog at first and we were tentative to take him anywhere, but the folks here were very understanding and great with him! He has always come home looking lovely, smelling clean, and happy. However, his latest visit has resulted in a serious injury. If you do decide to take your pet here, do NOT let them trim their nails. On our way home I noticed that one of Ozzie's nails looked kind of weird--I could tell they started/tried to clip the nail way too short but stopped and moved further down the nail. They did not mention this to me at all. I tried calling several times but there was no answer. He was walking fine and I figured if there was a real concern they would have let me know. Three days later, his nail broke off and it bled for about half an hour. We ended up taking him to an emergency vet, where we had to have the entire nail clipped back. He lost a lot of blood and is in a great deal of pain. Ozzie will be on antibiotics and pain medication for about a week and won't be able to take normal walks or go to the park for a week or longer. I am so disappointed not only that this happened but that I wasn't notified when there was an obvious mistake made. I understand that clipping nails with animals is difficult, but they are familiar with Ozzie, and as professionals this is a mistake that is unacceptable. This mistake resulted in an expensive medical procedure and caused real, lasting harm and pain to my pet. While I have loved taking Ozzie here, I am sad to say we won't be returning and please, please make sure you don't get your pets nails clipped here!!! read more

Your pet is like your child. There are no if's and's or but's about it. I have been going to The Pawlour for well over a year and had a nice relationship with Terry. However, on 7/25 I had the worst experience ever that has trumped all of my previous feelings about this "business". My dog went in for a grooming and came back to me with CONJUNCTIVITIS and ULCERS in BOTH eyes across the ENTIRE EYE (as confirmed by the Vet ER). Upon putting him in the car after his appt, I immediately noticed that his eyes were red and he kept blinking, but I assumed maybe a little hair got in and he'll be fine. NO, once home and for hourssss he would not open his eyes. I freaked out. I looked in his eyes and noticed it looked bruised and freaked out! I called Terry to ask if something went wrong during his visit because he won't open his eyes. She claims everything was fine, but I know something had to have happened. I immediately rushed to the ER out of concern and he was diagnosed with 2 issues. I called her while at the ER explaining what happened and she didn't take responsibility for any issue or accident and BLAMED ME saying anything could've happened once he left the groomer. Then she says the only thing she noticed was foam in his mouth after the wash. WHY would foam be in his mouth? Something obviously went wrong for him to have foam in his mouth! THE BIGGEST ISSUES is not only that my baby has to deal with this, but that TERRY HAS BEEN IGNORING ALL OF MY PHONE CALLS and not calling me back when I left messages. WHAT kind of business does that?! My mom called and finally reached her and Terry came up with a bunch of nothing excuses that had nothing to do with taking responsibility for the negligence! How can you do business with someone for so long and when they call with concerns about their child you ignore them and blame them. I am truly disgusted. Go at your own risk because if something happens you wont hear from them and it will be your fault. read more

This place is great! We brought our sheltie, Remington, here after seeing that they have experience with other double coat/ long hair dogs. We've had lots of bad experiences in the city - most groomers don't take the time to do a thorough de-shed and just cut off length, which leaves Remy with a fuzzy, dull coat and mats. Not the case here! They did a fantastic job removing the undercoat and gave him a very modest, breed-appropriate trim. The Pawlour even showed us some tips on how to keep Ramy's coat fresh in between visits. Price was reasonable (disclaimer: sheltie grooming is never cheap), and it was not difficult to get an appointment. The best part was how comfortable Remy was with them and the place - he was a bit nervous when we dropped him off, but by the time we picked him up, he was cruising around like he owned the place. He really took to the owners, so it's clear they are gentle and really love dogs. We will definitely be back with Remy and our other dog soon! read more

My 47lb labradoodle had his first and last grooming with Terry on 3/15. At drop off she told me to come back in two hours and when I came back she told me there was an accident and I would need to give her another two hours or so. I asked her what happened and she said he was a good boy but he stuck his tongue out when she was working on his face and his tongue was cut but the bleeding has stopped and it was nothing to worry about. My labradoodle whimpered when he saw me and Terry told me to look away and ignore it because he was just looking for attention and that the grooming is close to being finished. I had no choice but to leave also thinking the cut was just a surface abrasion of some sort. Two hours later I'm back and he's done and seemed fine. Terry proceeded to give me tips on how to manage my dog since he was young and me being a first time dog owner. It wasn't until I got my labradoodle in the car and at the red light I turned to look at him and he was panting with a split tongue! She cut right through the tip of his tongue and it was swollen. Called my vet immediately and was told to let it heal and if he was eating and acting normal to just observe. Thankfully the on and off bleeding stopped after a day and it looked better after a few days. Suffice to say I won't be going back and feel stupid for paying. read more

Since I recently got my puppy I have to find a place that I could trust! Relying on other yelpers, I discovered the Pawlour! I had high expectation of the Pawlour after seeing all the reviews on Yelp. I have a shih-tzu/maltese mix and this was her first time at a groomer! I love the final results of the tail and face which was able to meet my expectations. The fur on the body was a lot shorter then I would of liked yet I would still highly recommend them! The groomers are nice and explained everything they did and from the tail and face are skilled! The salon itself is very clean and has a gate to keep the animals in a enclosed area. My puppy smelled really good at the end of her grooming! This place is worth $50! The only con resulting in four stars is when I got home, I noticed some red spots (Razor Burns) on my puppy neck and some wounds on her ears. I am hoping since this was her first time at a groomer making her nervous and scared resulting in the injuries. I am coming back for my winter grooming and update this review (hoping to give it five stars)! See you in a couple of months. read more

I was going to call the actual business and demand answers but I think there's more of a wave if I just write a review. We took our two 3year old tabbies to get groomed. They told us it was not in their best, short-haired, interest to get a lion cut. We absolutely understood and just decided to get them "groomed." They looked fantastic! Clean and shiny..But, alarmingly hostile. When I brought them back home I saw their paws were a little red. THEIR NAILS WERE BLEEDING. They were cut to the shortest I've ever seen the nails be cut. There's a huge danger in hitting blood because that's a nerve that's extremely delicate- so much so that Vets advise you to not cut your own cats' nails. Well, for me and my cats, we're definitely not coming back here. It's a small, cute place for sure. But I don't think I can forgive my cats going through any sort of pain for something that wasn't properly administered. read more

Trekked from Astoria last Sat only to find that the appointment I confirmed with Carolina was null & void. Why you ask??? Well Carolina no longer works there. Terri said it had been a few months since she left & the new groomer said it had been a couple of weeks. Who's lying? Beats me! Then I was told the price was raises from $45 to $60. After trying to talk me into using the new groomer Terri basically said "well Carolina is gone and the price is $60" in a very dismissive way, to which I gave her the "you're so rude and unprofessional" death stare. Guess she sensed my anger and softened her tone and agreed to have me pay only $50 for my inconvenience. The cut teddy got was OK, wasn't impressed or as satisfied as when Carolina groomed him. They did call me in advance when I was to pick him up. But will I return??? Never! I told the woman I wanted the puppy teddy bear cut on my poodle, she gave me an angular cut that was not the same. I've brought my dog Matlock here twice, after seeing all the glowing Yelp reviews (and after getting an awful haircut for him uptown that I had to fix myself). The first time, my groomer was Daniel. I told them that I'd like his body trimmed at level 5 on the clippers, keep his tail long / on the fluffier side and most importantly, please KEEP HIS FACE ROUND. I don't know why I am so fixated on this, but I am. I think it's from all the childhood years of wanting a dog and getting teddy bears that I imagined were dogs. Now that I have a real dog I want him to look like a stuffed animal. Vicious cycle. Well - Daniel DELIVERED!! When I returned to pick up my Matlock, he looked absolutely adorable. Everything was exactly as I described! On top of that, Pawlour expresses the anal glands at no extra cost, and he came with a great bandanna that he still wears to this day when he's trying to make a good impression. Daniel also told me, to my surprise, that contrary to what the rescue org said he believed my dog to be a Lhasa Apso and not a Shih Tzu, because of his bone structure and size. So Daniel gave me a stellar haircut and took me to school, children. Tens, tens across the board! The second time, my groomer was Carolina. My mother brought Matlock for me but I included all of my details in writing along with a picture of Matlock's last cut - basically the exact same requests I made to Daniel. I emphasized again to keep Matlock's face round like the picture. Well, Matlock came out looking rather different from what I described, and it did take a little getting used to. I could immediately tell that Carolina had done a stellar job, to be sure. but Matlock's face and ears were cut SO short, that it looked like a very different dog to me. Those of you who are dog owners know that a drastic haircut can make you feel like you're re-meeting your dog again for the first time, which is just a weird feeling that I try to avoid. I'm assuming there was just a simple misunderstanding in the request. Nevertheless, I'm grateful for the experience I've had both times at Pawlour. I've seen / heard my share of horror stories about dogs getting cut at the groomers, getting infections, you name it. These people put a lot of time and care into what they do, and both groomers were very gentle with him and his sensitive back legs. Matlock came out of there as happy as can be! And there was an upside to Caroline's shorter cut -- it's now been 3 months and he's only just now in need of a trim. Here's to hoping I can find a groomer as good as Pawlour uptown for 50 bucks. read more

I came here this past Saturday to have my two Yorkies groomed. I was extremely nervous, for I've had horrible grooming experiences in the past, however the positive reviews made me feel a bit at ease. The atmosphere is very "homey" to say the least. When you enter, it's like walking into someone's living room. Kimberly, my younger pup, is only a year old, and has more energy than a little bit ! Needless to say, she's a handful to deal with, and I can only imagine that she gave Carolina a hard time, and still, when I went to pick her up, she looked perfect ! I'll admit, I was VERY anal with Carolina as to how I wanted her groomed. I instructed her on what I wanted her to do with almost every last hair on Kimberly's body LOL and she honored every single one of my requests. I must admit, I'm truly impressed. It was definitely worth the commute from East New York, and I recommend this place to anyone reading this review ! I give this place four stars out of five, only because the groomer who cut Louis' hair ( I didn't catch her name ) seemingly didn't understand one of my requests. I asked her to shave his hair short, but to layer the hair around his face, and somehow, he went home with a bob. It still looks good, however it wasn't what I had asked for. We'll definitely be returning, though, without a doubt ! I'll just make sure to bring a picture next time, just to ensure she's understanding of what I mean when I say "layer". Oh ! And before I forget ! Pricing wasn't too bad either. I was charged $50 for each dog, which included the bath, the actual grooming, and both of my pups came home with these cool bandanas also! This place is always inconsistent with their customer service but today was unacceptable and bordering bi-polar. I called ahead to let Terri, the owner, know that my wife was running late. She said it was OK and thanked me for letting her know. When my wife arrived, however, it was a whole other story. Terry was extremely rude and unprofessional. She was angry with my wife because our dog was wet (it was raining out, WTF?!) and because she was late. When my wife remarked that Terri was being unprofessional she became defensive and even more rude and said that the grooming was going to cost $80 this time! It was $60 last time we brought him in. She also acted angry that she had to personally groom our dog. Hello? Come again? Isn't that what we're paying you for? My wife then said she felt uncomfortable and was going to leave and Terri said that she should and physically pushed her and my dog out of the salon. She made our little 13 lb dog so nervous that he pooped on the floor. Then she changed her mind and said "well, he's already wet and pooped on the floor" so now I have to groom him." Wow. We have never had a business treat us so rudely and act so unprofessionally and then have the audacity to charge us extra for the privilege. After bringing our dog here for over two years I'm sad to say that this will be the last time we bring our dog there. read more

Today, my pup (Tillie) is sparkly. On a typical day she is a dull mound of hair, mournful looks, runny eyes, garbage breath, and unkempt fingernails. In fact, it's been remarked that she must sleep so much (approx 19-20 hours/day) because she is regenerating entire bales of hair to spread through the apartment on her infrequent bursts of energy. She was sort of a hot mess, but hey...she ain't trying to impress anyone. Well, ok...maybe NOW she is. So, off she goes to the groomer. But, today...friends. She sparkles! The credit goes to Pawlour. I'm proclaiming Terri the "Super Groomer of Brooklyn." Maybe even New York City. She's that good. Not just with the grooming, but with the dog psyche. She's like the Dog Grooming Whisperer. First off...my dog's grooming needs are not excessive (a basic car wash, if you will) but her attitude can be. She is not dog-friendly. In fact, it gives me anxiety just THINKING about her unsupervised with someone else's canine. I am very careful to find groomers that will understand this, keep her separate, and return her back to me...without her going to dog assault jail. Terri assured me that there would be no other dogs coming or going during T's appointment...but that her dog Miley (Husky) would be there during that time, but could be put outside. I was a bit nervous about even this, but hey...we'll give it a whirl. I set up an appointment via email, and we arrived this morning at 10am for Tillie's spa day. And lo and behold, I actually witnessed my dog, the ferocious beast, make a friend today. Miley the husky (Terri's dog). Sniffing each other like real, regular like dogs. Now, you must understand I've had Tillie for 6 years and I can count the number of dogs she's been nice to on one hand. I can count the dogs she's been nasty to on about 5,678 hands. Miley is a pro. Terri is a pro. She even gave me the cards of several dog walkers/boarders in the area. Everyone is happy, Tillie is groomed. Her owner (me) is happy. And it cost me...wait for it...$28. (+ tip) Yes, $28 to have her brushed (no small feat), ears/eyes/nails cleaned up and an introduction to socializing with the real world of dogs. I find this to be a very reasonable price, and she does accept credit cards. Tips appreciated in cash, I'm sure. I will now be a loyal devotee. How could I not go back to a place that houses my dogs one and only friend!? Tillie is 56 in dog years, and this has just happened. There truly is hope for the world, really. EXCELLENCE! Now I do not have tumbleweeds of dog hair everywhere in my apartment, either. Pawlour, FTW. read more

After over a year of being happy with their service, I must leave a negative review. A new guy that I have never seen before worked on my dog. He notified me when I dropped her off that the price had gone up from $50 to $60. I picked up my dog and spoke with the owner and told her that I would have appreciated it if she would've told me about the price increase when I made the appointment. Her response, "Well actually it should have been $70 because she had some matting." Unprofessional response from an unprofessional business. Lesson learned: You should be wary of a business without posted prices or what their services actually include. They also went from accepting credit cards to going cash only. To make things even worse the cut was horrible. It looked like my dog's face wasn't even touched. I'm very disappointed and I'm upset to have to leave such a bad review. ok i am gonna keep this short and simple. This is the worst establishment i have ever set my feet into. I came in and told the lady to keep my papillon's fur long, just trim and definitely, DEFINITELY NO BUZZ CUT. I said KEEP HIS FUR LONG. I showed her what I want removed and that would be sufficient. When I came to pick up my dog i see a buzz cut haircut. And to add insult to injury all the areas i told them to cut they left and what i told to leave they cut UNEVENLY!!! He looks like my 3 year old niece got into the medicine cabinet, stole the electric shaver and shaved the dog. My husband and family cannot believe their eyes either. oh and when i asked for a teeth brushing she said we dont do that and the reason was "well if we do it once and people dont continue then there really is no point". I have never heard of anything more ridiculous. So you're gonna charge me a ton of money to uglyfy my dog and you cant even brush his damn teeth?!! What kind of people cannot understand simple directions. He doesnt look like his breed anymore and I couldnt be more livid if i tried. Stay away from this business. They are very shady, cash only and no receipt. Plus this older blonde woman is a hack and extremely unskilled in her profession. They need to be reported to the Better Business Bureau or worse. Stay away unless you want your dog unevenly buzz cut, which is all i saw coming out of there. This place is great and Terry is awesome. She goes above and beyond my expectations and she is great with my cat. Before finding this place I would always get my cat groomed at a vet. Ive attempted to bring her to other groomers but the groomers will find her unmanageable. They couldn't even take her out of the carrier. Poor kitty. Now that I found Terry, my cat has a place to get all groomed and pretty. My cat has already been here twice. She is a long haired cat and is prone to mats so best to get her groomed before she gets uncomfortable. The first time we went, we had the place all to ourselves. It was great because it was less stressful for my cat and I. And it was great chatting with Terry as she worked. The second time it was crazy busy (dogs in the back getting groomed and dogs coming for their appt), but Terry stayed calm which reassured me and my cat that all was fine. I have been taking my 4 yr Shih Tzu to several different groomers throughout Brooklyn and most places charge to much or just make you feel like it's a "car wash". This is my "baby" and I want him treated better than me!! Awe....and then there is the Pawlour!! Terry is amazing. She is so sweet mannered and dogs just have a natural draw to her. Her prices are reasonable and she is very conscientious about making sure you are pleased with the service. For example, I had another one of her groomers groom the little man - who was also very nice and professional - and Terry called me the next day to ask if I was pleased with the service. We've gone to Pawlour for about a year now and we wouldn't trust our pup with another groomer. In fact, while visiting family in Massachusetts a couple of months after getting our dog, we brought our rescued 2 year old maltipoo to a groomer there with DISASTROUS results. An uneven cut. Our dog became upset by the groomer's rough handling and snapped at her, which led to him being muzzled during the cut. Pawlour has been the exact opposite. Every time we arrive we are greeted by the groomer who makes sure she understands what we're looking for in our dog's cut. Our dog gets pretty nervous while we're there but the staff is patient and understanding. (They tell us he's much calmer when we leave). My only complaint is that they only take cash. The Pawlour is great. Eric was so kind/caring/compassionate. He sensed Larkin's(70lb pittie/staffie mix) nervousness and ours and put us all at ease within minutes. He gives us great info/service/advice when we go in and Larkin always pulls towards the spot on walks now. Highly recommend! read more

Second time here, and Best groomer in NYC. The owner is so patient and nice, my baby is so matted, she managed to remove all of those and give him a cute lion cut. Then she teach me how to maintain my cat. I will definitely comeback as long as I am in NYC. read more

TERRY IS A PET WHISPERER. My cat was really unhappy to be put in his cat carrier and taken out of the house, but as soon as he arrived at The Pawlour, he was calm and collected. Terry gave my cat an amazing grooming: wiped him down with some waterless cat bath wipes, cut his nails (and showed us how to do it so as to not traumatize the poor baby), and brushed him with a brush that also cuts his fur a little bit.
