I hate writing bad reviews, especially for a small business, but feel like this one is warranted. Though I appreciate that this grooming salon is easy to communicate with via text and scheduled an appointment with only a few days notice for my dog - I will not be bringing my dog back because of how rude they are and the awful haircut he got. The man working when I brought him in was super curt with me and rude, as if he didn't have the time of day to talk to me, both when I dropped off my dog and picked him up. We agreed on how short they would trim my dog's coat, but it seems like they do not know how to groom certain breeds, including a papillon, which is what I have. While he was not harmed at all and the grooming was done very quickly, I was shocked that when I picked him up, it was the worst haircut he's ever gotten - very choppy and no care at all taken to how the breed is supposed to be cut (leaving feathering around the face and legs, etc). There were no options given for the grooming, nothing was explained to me, and overall customer service here was terrible. My dog has gotten better cuts and has been better taken care of at Petsmart's grooming salon in the past - and even they are a hell of a lot nicer. For the price ($100 including tip for a 13 lb dog) I'll go elsewhere. read more

Today I went to Doggie Styles with my cockapoo. The employees were very abrupt and rude, not taking the time to talk us through the haircut. That didn't particularly seem like animal people either. I had read the pricing online and failed to verify at drop off - so this is partly my bad. But I read it was $65-$95 and at pick up they charged $115. When I brought up this variance the employee said that is for very small dogs and held his hands about 6 inches apart. They also said you are charged by the hour. None of this is specified at drop off or on the website. Now that I have brought my dog home it is very odd because my dog has been incredibly drowsy the rest of the day. I have an incredibly hyper cockapoo puppy and the only time I have seen him this drowsy is after vet / neutering. I am not sure if they gave him something, but if they did need to, they really need to clear it with the owners first. The two stars are because my dog looks very cute with his haircut. read more

We've been bringing our extremely fluffy 50-pound aussiedoodle to Doggie Styles for over a year and are always satisfied with the way he looks after an appointment. Mike is very responsive, direct, and great at his job. It can often be stressful leaving your dog somewhere for extended periods of time, but we're always confident that our dog will be well taken care of at Doggie Styles. Just be prepared to leave your dog for 3-4 hours if he's as big and fluffy as our dog. They're not the cheapest grooming appointments, but given the level of service, the pricing makes sense. The men that work here have a bad attitude and never listen to you. They are condescending and will give your dog whatever haircut they please regardless of your preferences. They will then give you the run around and make really inadequate, often offensive excuses. Major gaslighting and one of the worst grooming spots I've ever taken my pet to. My dog has also been hurt and has scratched bloodied skin, presumably by the shaving device, behind the ear. Just spare yourself and go elsewhere. I debated posting a negative review because in all fairness my dog's haircut came out fine, even though it was a little shorter than what I asked for. But I was absolutely appalled at their lack of customer service/basic kindness. My phone was about to die so I stopped back by the shop to let them know/check in on my dog's progress and they told me he had been done for a little. So I guess he was just sitting in the back and no one called me? Then the owner informed me that my dog was a "total spaz" multiple times and basically berated me for my dog being scared of him and having an accident when he tried to brush his legs. I had just bathed him 2 days ago and he didn't give me any trouble, so clearly he was either frightened or being manhandled. I still wasn't going to post a review but today I saw my dog's eye is injured! I had noticed a little redness when we left the groomer but it's gotten so much worse. Obviously it may not be their fault or is an allergic reaction to the shampoo but with all the bad reviews about the way this place treats their clients pets I can't be sure and that makes me very uncomfortable. Overall the price was fine/a little expensive and my dog's hair looks alright but I won't be returning because of the rude staff. read more

My dog, Lali, was a smelly, dirty, matted, mess when I got her. Her Maltese/yorkie hair was so matted all I could do was wash her to get some of the smell off. The poor thing could barely see with all the hair covering her eyes! I immediately took her to Mike at Doggie Styles. I am SO glad I did! My dog is neurotic. She shakes like a leaf at the slightest provocation, real or imagined. Once we get to Doggie Styles, she runs right in. Before I came here I sort of rotated through groomers. Most of them cut my dog by accident or shaved her completely without asking my permission. I brought her here a couple months ago and I probably won't go anywhere else. Some people said that Mike has an attitude but he's nothing but nice to me and it's awesome that he can do same day appointments. He's the first person who actually grooms her properly rather than being lazy and just shaving all her hair off. Plus she came back super happy and friendly and not shaken up which says a lot about how they treat dogs. It's never loud and it doesn't smell horrible too which is a plus. I also like that he let's the dogs walk around. Maybe it was a slow day but when I picked up my dog he just called her over and she walked in from the other room. Awesome place. I have been bringing my ridgeback-husky mix, Luna, to Doggie Styles for over a year and I cannot say enough good things about this place. She always comes back shining, happy, smelling good, and with MUCH less shedding. On top of the amazing grooming job, Michael is really the best. Today I called him in a panic, 20 minutes before our appointment, because I could not find Luna's latest vaccination records. He reassured me that it was no big deal if we needed to reschedule and then continued to look into our account to see who vaccinated her in the past. Once he saw it was VIP Pet Care, he instructed me on how to download all of her files. He turned my stress into action and within minutes I had her records downloaded and I was out the door. I am new to the neighborhood and decided to give this place a try. Sadly, I cannot speak to the grooming because no one was there when I showed up for my appointment! I made an appointment on Thursday 3/25 for today, Tuesday 3/30 at 3:30pm. I told them I was leaving town the following day and they agreed to fit me in for today and would confirm with me Monday or Tuesday AM. I went ahead and emailed them all my dogs vaccination paperwork and all seemed fine. Today rolls around and I called multiple times with no response, I texted them to confirm as well with no response. I figured they would have reached out if they realized they couldn't fit me in and I didn't want to risk not being able to get my dog in for a grooming so I walked my dog the 30 minutes there. Once there, I rang the doorbell as instructed, still no one came to the door, I knocked, called and texted some more before i realized the lights weren't even on! The hours on the door clearly stay 10AM - 5PM, it was only 3:30! I waited 10-15 minutes before I realized no one was going to come out. Annoyed doesn't even begin to explain how I feel. I can't even imagine letting them touch my dog after this fiasco. Imagine if they went radio silence while they had my dog inside!! Did they just decide to close on a random Tuesday afternoon and not bother to call their customer and let them know? I am sure they do excellent grooming at this place, but the customer service and reliability is NOT there. I would not recommend, please go somewhere else if you respect your time at all. read more

The good: 1. I called and got an appointment that afternoon. 2. The person at the register was nice. 3. Cost was the same as other groomers. The bad: 1. I was concerned about the dogs running around, since my rescue dog is aggressive towards other dogs of they touch her. I guess it worked out find though, because they didn't mention any incidents. 2. She has 2 scissor cuts on her forehead that I wasn't told about, and it looks like that we're not treated. I'm not obsessive with tiny cuts, but these are pretty big. 3. The cut wasn't what I asked for. Actually, it was exactly what I asked not to have. I don't like long haired dogs cut short with ears and tails left long. It's really common here, but I don't find it cute at all. I specifically asked for all her hat to be uniform in length, including ears/legs/tail. I got her back and the cut was well done, but the ears/legs/tail were left long (the ears just trimmed straight across the bottom) while the body was scissored short. They were closing when her appointment ended, so I didn't ask them to redo it, but I would've liked it if they'd followed my instructions. All and all, not bad and she does look good, just not my style of cut. read more

I will not return to Doggie Styles Pet Grooming! The second I walked in to this place I had anxiety about leaving my dog. It is extremely small. The people were not friendly. I was barely acknowledged for the first 10 min of standing there. I dropped my puppy off and was told he would be done in no more then 2 hours. When I returned in 2 hours I was asked who I was there for and told..Oh yeah I just have to finish the paws. When they took my dog out he was not even cut at all. I don't even think they were payign attention to him for the entire 2 hours he was there. I stayed for the duration of the cut. My puppy is only 7 months old and is can be a little jumpy but the second he moved a little on the table the groomer hit his snout fairly hard-two times. Another women and I were both watching and horrified by the way he treated the dog. We both said we would never be coming back after witnessing this. Lastly, when the cut was over he just opened the door and let the puppy run out without a leash on. If someone opened the front door he could have run right out. I would not recommend for anyone to come here-bad service & bad attitudes! read more

Doggie Styles is the best of the very best in canine grooming. Our lovable 2-yr-old Norwich terrier - Wolfgang Amadeus Clark (Wolfie for short) - is an expert dog groomer's nightmare in the respect that his breed needs to be hand-stripped rather than sheared with scissors or shavers. The Norwich, the Norfolk & some other breeds have 2 coats: a velvety soft undercoat (think mink) & a long, rough outer coat. The former keeps the dog warm, while the latter protects it from thorns & brambles as it dashes through the underbrush in pursuit of its prey: foxes, rodents & other critters including deer (but it takes at least 2 or 3 of them to bring down a deer). The typical Norwich stands about 10" high & weighs 12-13 lbs. Wolfie is way big for breed, standing about 12" tall & weighing 20-21 lbs of solid muscle. A gentle little giant, he's nevertheless fearless & proudly stands his ground when threatened by German shepherds, pit bulls, etc... & they nearly always wind up being friends & playmates. To get back on topic, getting Wolfie properly groomed had been an ordeal, as I had to drive him out to the middle of NJ, where a lady who breeds & shows Norwich terriers took about half a day to do the job. Her work was OK & she's a very nice person, but she charged more than does Mike at Doggie Styles for less inspired results... to say nothing of wasting a day of my life & the additional costs of gasoline & tolls to get there & back. As our nearest Petco doesn't offer hand-stripping, we used their services only for bathing, nail-clipping & anal gland cleaning. Our vet suggested that we take Wolfie for grooming at a place called Puppy Paradise on Flatbush Ave. I took him there for the same treatment he'd been getting at Petco, & instructing the management to leave his coat as it was: no cutting, or shearing, as he had to be stripped. While, the folks at Puppy Paradise are very nice & clearly gaga over dog of all shapes & sizes, they totally disregarded my instructions: they cut poor Wolfie's hair, snipped his tail hairs into a square-end, perfumed him like a $2 hooker & tied a cheap kerchief around his neck that make him look as though he belonged to a homeless beggar. One the other hand, Mike made Wolfie look like a movie star, hand-plucking his back to expose his velvety red undercoat, & minimally stripping the rest of his coat to leave a bit of the typical Norwich "skirt" & the leonine look of his face & neck. All this & more for less money than we paid in NJ & no added sacrifices of time & money. Mike happens to be a very personable & friendly fellow, as well as a very experienced pro in his field, having run a similar business with his sister in Vermont for many years before deciding to check out life in the Big Apple. Finally, Mike has a modest assortment of handsome but reasonably priced doggie duds, including a very innovative raincoat I bought for Wolfie, that keeps his back, sides & belly dry & free of the mud & other crap that used to collect in his long coat whenever we walked in the rain. I was half-dismayed, half-cute-overloaded to find Wookie, at the end of his first last-minute, 90-minute session with Mike resembling a wormy, hairless cat. God knows I'm all for "it'll grow out" - but my explicit instructions were to take just enough off his shaggy mop to look presentable. It's winter after all, and my lanky lapdog gets chilly after sundown without his parka. His poor, bare, pink butt shivered the six blocks home (and daily and nightly, on walks). But you know? I'm annoyed, but not indignant. Doggie Styles costs half as much ($40) as a superior service (e.g., Unleashed: $70) - and it's not a bad one at all. We'll be back - but probably not for another four-to-five months. read more

My dog loves to bite when she is being cleaned. Even if you are just wiping her mouth clean. So i was apprehensive about bringing her to a groomer. But her hair was getting dangerously long. On our first visit, I explained to him her behavior and he assured me it wouldn't be an issue. And it wasn't! Took about 2 hours and when I saw her, I didn't even recognize her! She looked so grateful. He said she bit a few times but nothing major. We've been back there every 3 months or so for the past year and she loves it! I have to say Mike is great! Yes, he is a sarcastic guy and has a dry sense of humor but he's great with the dogs. Simon hates getting his hair done but I really only trust Mike with him as Simon is NOT EASY at all. I've tried to cut the hair around his face as it gets unruly and the fact that Mike can get it so close and without a hitch, I'm impressed. It does take a while but that's because Simon is not easy. Sometimes it takes a half hour to do his face alone. I feel extremely comfortable leaving my dog here and recommend Doggie Styles to everyone I know. Everyone else I've known who has gone here are impressed as well. I don't see what a small place has to do with the quality... but again, people are inherently impressed by size here. Overall, great experience and HIGHLY recommended. Oh and if he called my dog a pain in the ass while he was grooming him I wouldn't be offended as he really is. Love, love love doggie styles. The owner is always so nice, despite that I am one of those people that just walk in and ask if he can do a certain service. I came for a bath in August for my newly rescued dog, who had dirt which was stuck ALL over her stomach, and came back 30 minutes later and she was like a new dog! I also came in this week for an ear cleaning (which my dog can't stand, if my dog even sees me come at her with a cotton ball she will run and hide for hours.) It took less than five minutes and when she came out, her tail was wagging and she was quite happy. Not to mention it is so reasonably priced I feel like I am in upstate ny. To the person who gave a negative review for him calling your dog a pain in his ass while he thought you weren't there, are you serious? Your dog was most likely not making it easy for him, and as long as he wasn't yelling at or mishandling your dog, who cares? He didn't know you were there. Your dog can't understand him. There was no one there for him to offend. Everyone has bad days. If you think that when you leave that anyone will be calling your struggling dog an angel, you're wrong.
