We have been taking our Havanese to Sonia for years and her grooming is unrivaled. I first took my chihuahua to Sonia to have her nails trimmed and ground down, and though she doesn't reserve an appointment time for that (if that's the only service) Sonia gave me the option of arriving 15 minutes before she opened her salon, which we did. I tend to bathe my chi on my own, since she was adopted at 8 years old from a shelter after a really bad breeding situation and baths are maybe a little scary for her. But she was due for her next nail clipping, and bathing her myself is often miserable for both of us, so I decided to book a full service. I was pleasantly surprised when my sister dropped Candy (my chi) off to be groomed and was told it would take more than an hour for Sonia to perform the services needed. Candy doesn't bark or bite but she's terribly nervous so it made me feel reassured that the person grooming her was giving her so much attention and being very patient. Candy came to me looking fresher than I have ever seen her and smelling faintly of some sort of flower or fruit, and also wearing the cutest little bandana! I brought my dog here for the first time over the weekend. About 15 minutes before the appointment the owner/groomer called to say her assistant never showed up. My first thought was why is that my concern? It was very odd. We asked if she still wanted us to bring our dog in and she said yes. I was disappointed as soon as I walked in. Her website claims she's not a typical groomer and only grooms 1 dog at a time, but when we got there she was still working on another dog. We asked how long it would take for our dog to be groomed and she said 3 hours and that she would call 1 hour before she was done. 3 hours after we left we still hadn't heard from her, so we called. She said she couldn't trim my dogs nails without her assistant there but her assistant was supposed to be there in 30 minutes -- keep in mind my senior dog who is terrified at the groomer had already been there 3 hours. It seemed absolutely ridiculous that we were having to wait and our dog had to stay there because she doesn't know how to run a business and her assistant didn't show up. She told us it would be another 1.5 hours before our dog was done -- That's a total of nearly 5 hours to groom a small dog. When we arrived to pick up our dog the owner/groomer kept making excuses as to why it took so long -- none of which had anything to do with my dog. She said she was running behind because she runs her business by herself, her assisant didn't show up, etc. When she FINALLY got my dog from the back I picked my dog up, and the owner/groomer forcefully grabbed my dogs leg to show me how she groomed my dog's leg/stomach. That was the last straw for me. This groomer has a horrible temperament and definitely isn't professional. I guess I would expect this sort of horrible experience if I were paying very little to have my dog groomed; however, her prices are absolutely outrageous (you don't know that in advance because she doesn't tell you the price). I will absolutely never take my dog back to this place, and unless you like waiting around 5-6 hours to have your dog groomed by a person who doesn't even know how to hire a good assistant, I wouldn't recommend taking your dog here either. Also, this groomer didn't tell me when I picked my dog up that my dog had been cut on her lower stomach during the grooming process. The laceration was so bad that it required a trip to the vet and 2 weeks of prescription topical ointment to heal. read more

I've been taking my 3 year old Sheltie here for almost a year now and I can't be happier. Sonia is wonderful. My dog is very sound sensitive and was quite afraid of groomers after a number of bad experiences at another place in our neighborhood. At our first appointment with Sonia, she took the time to really talk to me and try to learn about my dog and any fears he had, what I was looking to accomplish with his coat, etc. She has been so wonderful and gentle with him - he doesn't quake in fear whenever we approach her store (which used to happen with the place we previously used), and we get SO many compliments on how handsome he looks every single time we leave her store. He clearly knows he's handsome and must feel great because he seems to prance around happily for days after a visit with Sonia. Really - can't say enough good things about her! As an update, my dog is getting much better with not being afraid of my hair dryer at home (which was a major issue after some bad experiences with the drying process at previous grooming salons). RUN the other way!!! This summer I took my Maltipoo puppy to this woman Sonia. I should've known better from the moment I met her, she likes to hear herself talk and wanted my puppy to be pretty much brushed and cleaned before she groomed him. I told her he needed ONLY a trim (he has curly hair that I brush twice a week but she was claiming he had knots and she had other dogs to work on that day). Her response was to shave him instead . I said NO, he's my moms puppy and I was not authorized to anything else but a trim. Her response was shocking, "Your mom won't even notice". I said my mom would and to please just a trim. I couldn't believe her audacity with that statement. How dare she. I agree with other people I spoke with that she takes too long in order to justify her expensive service which is ridiculous. Four hours later when I picked him up I was I in shock to see he had been shave. I was very upset, and when I asked she went on and on about the knots and that I didn't brush him, justifying the result. She said she was behind schedule with the other dogs because of mine and she wanted me to sign some kind of paper that I declined unless I read it. She was rushing and exhibiting odd behavior. My ride was there and we left. I noticed my puppy was anxious to leave that place and when we got home he went to a corner and looked so sad, very unusual for him. So I checked him from head to toe And to my horror I saw he had a cut on each ear, and this odd woman never mentioned it. What kind of professional is she? I guess learning online shouldn't be enough to trust her with our pets. She doesn't have patience and that's a number one requirement if she wants to be in this business. My puppy was so traumatized because he didn't play for three days, nor had an appetite. I was furious. Unfortunately I didn't do my homework before taking him to this woman. After the fact I was asking people in my neighborhood and i found out that all of them had similar experiences with their dogs and a poor opinion about this woman. Avoid Sonia's for your pets needs. Spent 5 hours on my 20 lb, 5 year old dog blaming the dog for being difficult to work with. My dog has been groomed by many other people over the years including at Bark Slope. I have even frequently used clippers and cut her hair myself. No one has had such a "difficult" time with the dog until Sonia. She keeps the front door locked during grooming which is fine but I heard Sonia yelling at my dog from outside of the store. Sonia just seems VERY, VERY easily flustered and frazzled. We recently adopted a pup from a local shelter and our vet recommended taking him to Sonia's to get cleaned up. This was our first experience with a groomer so we can't compare it to other experiences but we were incredibly impressed. We thought he'd be in and out in an hour but Sonia spent three hours perfecting him. Everyone in the neighborhood has been commenting on how awesome he looks for a dog that just came from a shelter and we can thank Sonia for that. I felt the need to update this due to recent developments. After years of bringing my dog here until she passed away, I decided to bring my new pup to Sonia as well. However, at one point she called while I was on a business call and attempted to have a long, slow conversation with me about appointment particulars. She kept asking the same questions repeatedly and talking over me to reexplain whenever I tried to answer and end the call. Once I realized we were going on circles and she wasn't listening to the fact that I couldn't stay on the call, I tried to move it along, asking what specifically she needed, but it was not well received, and she told my partner that she was uncomfortable. She's a very nice lady but not everyone can sit on the phone at length to have circular conversations. She had been abrupt with me in the past while busy and I have not taken it personally because I respect that she runs a business. So if she cannot understand that clients are sometimes also busy and cannot give her unlimited time without taking it personally then I think she's right about her not being a good fit, so we will be taking our pup elsewhere. I will also add that as the person who booked her in the first place for many years, the least she could have done was sent an email to me directly versus using someone she met only once as an emissary. The whole debacle just feels unprofessional, which is unfortunate because she's quite gifted. So choose whether to book with her based on more than just this one review. read more

Was recommended to her by someone in my area with a small dog (looks wise, about the same size as mine). I called her and she says she doesn't do toy breeds because they're "a waste of her time". I have a toy poodle and toy/mini Aussiedoodle (not sure how big she will get since she is currently 8 months). Both are around 10 pounds, they're not unusually tiny dogs or anything super delicate. I saw small dogs on the pictures on her website and small dogs on her reviews. I'm not sure why she wouldn't take mine, or why they would be a waste of her time. If anything they would take less time than a big dog I would assume? I told her they're very easy going and have never had any issues with getting groomed. She wouldnt even give me a price, and I would have paid the "small or medium" dog price if that was the reason. I understand times are tough right now, which is even more why I wanted to support a small local business. The best most tasteful grooming in nine years! My little sweet Cotton Cannoli has been going to various groomers for eight years...all over the country as we've moved around...he's had some good grooms and some bad ones but never an extraordinary grooming...until we found Sonia! First of all, Cannoli usually shakes and runs from the groomer, and when we go to Sonia is just runs right into the shop! So, I KNOW she's kind and gentle with him. She is SO personal with the animals and obvsiously loves them. And, when I pick him up he doesn't look like every other fluffy white doggie, he looks like Cannoli - she groom to suit his sweet face and personality! I mean it. I'm so sorry that this review has taken so long to write. I first began using Sonia shortly after she opened her doors a few years back. My Bichon-poodle "Leo" had been known to have some issues in tolerating grooming, which unfortunately meant he went Un-groomed more often than Id have liked him to. So, when we walked by on a random stroll and spotted Sonia tending to another dog as if it was her own, we went in and made our first appointment. Never before had I met a groomer that truly loves what she does, and spends as much time as she feels necessary to get the job done right. Her specific questions and cutting menu were impressive. What was more convincing was her loving handling of Leo. During that initial groom Sonia had called to let me know of a little raw spot on Leo's tail (which is his obsessive little gnawing spot), and that she would be careful not to irritate it. Several hours later when it was time to pick up my little guy, I was pleasantly surprised in how well he turned out! Even more than that, he wasn't scratching at the door to high tail it out of there! Leo and I have been loyal customers since that first day, despite our recent moving into Manhattan. Sure, there are groomers closer...but I have come to truly trust Sonia, and so has Leo. She does a wonderful job in making your pet as close to perfect as she can. Sonia is attentive to your requests, any health or mental issues the dog may have, and she is a genuine dog lover. I'd recommend her without a single reservation. We took our dog here today for the first time after not being able to get an appointment at Bark Slope, which is where we usually take him. Because he was abused before being rescued, he is weary of strangers (and clippers) and never quite learned to keep still around them. He is admittedly not the easiest little guy (a whopping 18lbs) to groom, but Bark Slope has never had a problem and neither have we. Sonia kept him for less than a half an hour (!!) before calling us and saying she couldn't groom him for reasons that boiled down to the fact that he wasn't behaving and because she had already dismissed her assistant/handler for the day. If she had asked us about his temperament beforehand, we would have happily told her he can be difficult depending on the circumstances. But what kind of dog is perfect all the time? Anyway, all she wanted to know before his appointment were things related to the cost of his grooming. Is it our fault she didn't have a second pair of hands? He isn't so badly behaved that he merits a warning, so not sure what was going on. When we came to pick our dog up, Sonia tried to blame her failure on the fact that people were doing their holiday shopping and just leaving their dogs with her. EXCUSE ME? I thought this was a fancy groomer that took one dog at a time? If that wasn't the case, we should have been made aware of the change in protocol. After leaving Sonia's our dog was obviously rattled and shaking and smelled strangely like he'd been sprayed with a very strong, floral perfume. I'm not sure what went on in thirty minutes we were gone, but I hope it isn't anything that we should be worried about, that is, beyond the complete inability of a dog groomer to do her job. read more

My eleven year old wheaten terrier, lucky, and I recently moved from San Francisco to Brooklyn. Lucky had lived in san francisco since she was a pup, and had gone to the same groomer for 10 years, so I was very concerned that all the change would stress out my easily-stressed out - ok, lets call a spade a spade - DRAMA QUEEN pooch. As any overly attentive (ok, NEUROTIC) dog owner, I researched park slope groomers long before I even moved. :-) I'd narrowed it down to a couple, including Sonia's. As fate would have it, as I was wandering around my new neighborhood a few days after my arrival, I passed Sonia's shop and decided to say hello. From the moment I met Sonia, i got the warmest feeling. I hesitantly explained lucky's issues (not limited to the drama queen one), but also skin allergies, and a serious neck condition that makes it harder for a groomer since a neck noose cannot be used. I also asked if she wouldn't mind talking to my San Francisco vet and groomer about how to best handle lucky. I was afraid all of this would scare Sonia away. But it was quite the opposite. She addressed all my concerns, and happily agreed to call the vet and groomer! Sonia did not shy away from the challenges I presented, rather, she welcomed the opportunity to work with lucky, even inviting me to bring lucky for introductory (and complimentary!) visits, complete with treats, to get her used to the shop. I was so impressed that she'd go to those lengths to make my dog comfortable. Lucky's been to Sonia's about 8-9 times. besides the fact that she gives lucky a gorgeous cut, and hers is the cleanest grooming shop I've ever seen, I am totally blown away with the care and compassion Sonia shows lucky. After eleven years, I know my dog well enough to know when she's been treated well, and its clear that Sonia goes the extra mile to calm my little drama queen. This is evidenced by the fact that, when I go to pick lucky up at Sonia's, lucky's gotten so comfortable there that, after she's done greeting me, she lays down and lounges in the reception area, so relaxed, as if she's in her own living room. I've only seen lucky do this in a few places in her life, and they were all places that felt like home to her. With all the uncertainty that comes with the moving process, it's SUCH a relief to have found a caring groomer who gives my dog such a beautiful cut! I HIGHLY recommend Sonia. read more

I really hate writing bad reviews but this was a really bad experience. I hope it was an isolated case cuz the place looks good and Sonia seemed like a nice person at first. Maybe she was having a bad day, maybe she felt super uncomfortable around a big dog. She might be good for small breed dogs but she was horrible to my Pit Bull. I had to go pick him up half way thru cuz she called me saying she couldn't handle him (and I might even say she was kind of rude about it) She did not ever finish shedding him. Just moved to the area and took my dog here for the first time and have to say it was the worst experience I've had with a groomer. While we were 10 minutes away, driving to our 12pm appointment she calls and tells us her assistant didn't show up and wanted to confirm our appointment. She told us to bring her in still. When we arrived, we were told it would take 3 hours to cut our 22lb dog and she'd call 1 hour before she was done. Well, 3 hours go by so we call led her and she complained that her assistant didn't come to work and she had difficulty with her nails and had only "pre-groomed" her at that point. When I questioned how much longer it would take and that it was already 3 hours, she preceded to have an attitude with me over the phone, raising her voice, about how "this is how I run my business" she works alone and doesn't have a team of people. Well, the way she is running her business is ineffective and not conducive to the overall experience for the dog and dog owners-- making them wait 5 hours to groom one 22lb dog. We have lived all over the US and it never took this long and had this bad experience with a groomer. Other points of our bad experience were: 1) On her website and in her store, she promotes the fact she does "one-on-one" grooming and no other dogs are present. False. There was a dog when we arrived and a different one when we left. Later to find out, she didn't start grooming our dog until 1 hour later at 1pm 2) Instead of apologizing for the issues at hand and taking ownership over her business, she kept saying things like, "well my assistant didn't show up and I told you that." How is that OUR problem? 3) She tried charging us the full $95 after it took 5 hours (2 hours longer) and we were satisfied with the grooming. When I told her I wanted a discount for our troubles and most importantly the troubles of our dog had, she told me to leave. One of the reasons we chose this business to groom or dog is because our dog is 13 years old and terrified of the groomer and we thought this was going to be a one-on-one pleasant grooming experience for her. However, it was the exact opposite. Our dog is exhausted, dehydrated, and still covered in fur from the cut. read more

This place is far too expensive. I couldn't believe that I was charged $110 to groom my small yorkie. I usually pay about 50$ but the woman I go to retired and so I had to find someone new. i have a big dog with a coat that it is important to have professionally groomed. after hearing some great word of mouth, i took him to sonia. she spent two separate visits brushing him out, i paid for both visits. i was impressed with her attention to detail and her desire to make sure he was groomed completely and correctly. i was less impressed by her attitude. i knew he would be a big job, he goes to the park one to three times a day and when i brought him in it was after the holidays and i had not kept up on my brushing. she was condescending but i didn't mind as long as she was going to clean him up. i have spoken to other dog owners in the neighborhood and they have had the same experience. we all agree that we can take it (as well as the higher price) because she is good at what she does. she told me to bring him in every couple of months and that would be sufficient to keep him in shape. so two months later, i called to get an appointment to get him washed and shaved down for spring. to my surprise, she told me she had decided not to "take on certain dogs" because she works alone. she said it had nothing to do with me or my dog, but that he was just too big of a job. i was surprised to hear this because she and others have told me about the big, difficult dogs she grooms.... she told me about a newfy that she has the owner bring in every three weeks. my dog is smaller than a newfy, his coat is different but similar. (again, she told me to bring my dog in every 2 months, as long as i continued brushing him. she said he wasn't as bad as the newfy when he first came in.) and when i have taken my dog to BARK SLOPE they do nothing but tell me how well maintained his coat is and how wonderful my dog is while being groomed. ...i also hear from people in the neighborhood all of the time that my dog's coat always looks well groomed and that he is a sweetheart. i am not an owner who neglects brushing my dog out. -- to reiterate, i thought she did a great job grooming my dog. and i was fine with the attitude and higher price. but beware that if you bring your dog to her, you may only get to go once. read more

Last month, Sonia alerted me about a small lump on my dog's leg which proved to be a benign tumor when removed. I doubt I would ever have noticed it leaving it to continue growing. We have been using Sonia for 2 years since we adopted our cockapoo Ru. When we first brought Ru to Sonia, it was right from the shelter, and Ru was in bad shape! Such long matted and dirty hair, she practically had dread locks in some areas. Sonia took such good care of her, she found Ru had a dew claw wrapped all the way around her wrist and tangled in her hair. It was definitely no easy job, it took almost a whole day, but when we picked up Ru the transformation was amazing! We had no idea that this dog would be SO cute (and so small)! Below is a previous review from when Sonia first opened in June (from another website)- I just wanted to post a RAVE review for Sonia. I just brought my maltese/pomeranian mix to see her a few hours ago. He was quite a mess and was matted (much to my embarrassment) but not only was she very sweet and not nasty about the matting, she took her time and spent HOURS dematting him so she wouldn't have to shave him. I could also really tell that she has a strong background with dogs, her first interaction with him was very pleasant and he immediately took a liking to her. I picked him up and he was actually pulling to go back in, and was giving her kisses on the face when we left. AND he looks awesome- she left him longer than any other groomer has ever been able to! She is a bit pricer than some other places in the hood (about $10 more than I was paying to have him shaved to the skin before) but he looks SO relaxed and the whole experience was beyond my expectations. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! AND an update from recently- I've brought Bruno to Sonia 3 or 4 times now and she always does an AMAZING job. This time, I was a big neglectful and his mats needed to be shaved down- she called me and informed me in advance that he would need to be taken shorter than usual (which I figured going in, no biggie) and asked me to bring him a sweater when I picked him up. Even though she shaved him, he looks ADORABLE. She spent HOURS making sure he could save as much hair as possible. Additionally, my dog LOVES Sonia. Every time we walk by the shop he frantically pulls to go inside, and when I drop him off he looks so excited to see her. I don't know what she does, but she has definitely made a place in the heart of my dog and myself. I've taken Bruno to 2 other groomers in the neighborhood and Sonia's is absolutely the best. read more

I cant say anything bad about Sonia! My 4 year old Havanese is very timid. Sonia is kind and gently and takes excellent care of my sweet Rosie. I am as a well a total neurotic dog owner and she caters to every single request I make, no matter how silly they are. Rosie comes back happy and as cute as can be. I love Sonia . She really takes care of my dog . She seems to take care of each dog individually because we all know each dog have different personalities. My wife and I recently moved to Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn and were looking for a dog groomer nearby. Happily we found Sonias! She really listened to the preferences of how we like Paco to be groomed, and he has never looked better. Really....he looks amazing. It does make a difference when the groomer is also the owner and sole person who runs the business. The personal touch can be very important. We will 100% take Paco back to Sonias next time he needs a grooming. read more

Sonia always does a great job on my standard poodle, who has lots to groom. She is very thorough, caring and professional. Prior dog groomers have rushed through, leaving my dog's ears crusty, with occasional nicks in random places, and often very irritated. Sonia's not slow, but definitely takes care to do it right, and gives me updates on things to watch for with his coat. read more
