My husband and I went here for our anniversary dinner and took our kids with us (because growing boys love a good steak). My youngest son asked for A1sauce, and the oldest told him his steak didn't need it and not to ruin a good thing. The oldest kid's plate was completely clean and the youngest said it was by far the best steak he had ever tasted, that we needed to go more often. My husband cleaned his salmon, and the cooks did their thing for sure! Service was wonderful, and miss Mary Katelyn took the very best care of us and was just the sweetest! We got a good laugh at the name of this town. South of th Border, South Carolina. It's a riot of Mexican restaurantts and entertainment. We drove by all that specidically to eat at Pedders Steak House! Even though is was mid-week, the restaurant ws very busy. The salad bar is magnificent and the steaks are absolutely superb! Stopped for an overnight stay at the RV Campground. Walked across the street for what we thought would be a casual dinner. We were pleasantly surprised when we walked in and noticed what a nice and kind of fancy restaurant this was! The hostess was so gracious and sat us in Gaby's station. From the moment we sat down she was attentive and very pleasant. The Ribeyes, baked potato and the salad & bread were all delicious!! Was a little hesitant to stop in after seeing 3 stars, but seeing the option across the street, went for it. It's a round building behind a large sombrero..but don't let that keep you away. Walked inside and had about a 30 minute wait. No bar option so just take a seat, wait to be called. Inside is lacking any style of decoration, seems dated. Once seated we were well taken care of from start to finish. The salad bar was very good, and kept fresh and maintained during our stay. Our steaks and prime rib were spot on, no complaints. Don't let the kitschy "South of the Border" tourist attraction on the offramp scare you, and drive right by looking for a huge, oversized sombrero and you've found one of the best steakhouse's around! While we were little hesitant given the surroundings and the sombrero, we're glad we persevered and ultimately enjoyed a great meal. We were seated after a 15-minute wait and were immediately greeted by our server who turned out to be attentive and informative. The salad bar was neat and organized, well stocked, and everything looked fresh and inviting. We ordered the Large Cut Filet Mignon with an additional salad that came with an additional side. The Filet was one of the best, most tender melt-in-your-mouth Filet's we had in a VERY long time! You can see from the pics I couldn't wait to dig it! I ordered steamed vegetables that were well cooked, vibrant in color and not mushy that is often the case! My wife ordered a baked potato, and it was equally as impressive. We'd each ordered a glass of wine that was good for the price point (we just couldn't bring ourselves to split a bottle of some good stuff). We finished off with some Creme Brulee' and that the only thing that left a little to be desired. It was like the 'Creme' was left out of the Creme Brulee'. It was good overall and creamy with the caramelized sugar, but it just was as rich as you'd expect for Creme Brulee'. Don't let the fact that the outside looks like a unkept sombrero fool you. The inside is much nicer (not fancy but nicer than the outside). Service was friendly. We were seated right away. We all had the large filet (guessing 8oz or 10oz) and it was seasoned well and cooked perfect. The salad bar was well kept. Was about $140 for our family of 3 before tip. 2 had waters and one soda. Stopped for the night at South Of The Border and decided to try The Peddler for dinner. We are so glad we didn't go by the reviews on this place. Yes the building is dated inside and out. But let me tell you this, our meal was superb. The salad bar is well kept and fresh! I had the sirloin and my husband had the prime rib. Both were cooked exactly to order and both were seasoned well. Yes the meals might be a little pricey, but we don't mind to pay a little more as long as our meals are good. Gabryal our waitress was very attentive and very sweet! I have to mention this because it's rare that you see this but we noticed that all of the waitresses/servers helped each other out. I just love teamwork like this! Speechless. I can not believe I am writing this review for a restaurant at the tackiest tourist trap on the east coast. Sure, we've hit South of the Border before. You go there for the kitsch, not to eat. Thank goodness for Yelp or we would have NEVER tried this place. Ever. After all, the building is shaped like a sombrero. Really. But once you walk through the door, it's a whole different world than the tacky neon that surrounds the place. First, it's clean and dare I say tastefully decorated (which is so NOT South of the Border style). The service is fantastic - everyone there is SO nice! All of the servers work together, running food, refilling drinks, even the hostess was refilling the salad bar. Second, let's talk food. Oh my! The menu is fairly straight forward steakhouse fare. The entrees come with the salad bar, which is amazing in that there are so many fresh choices and it is constantly refilled. I went with the blue cheese dressing, my usual, and it was creamy and loaded with chunks of blue cheese. Nice. I had the prime rib which was cooked perfectly (mid-rare) and melt in your mouth delicious. Hubby had the NY strip cooked to the perfect rare. It was a beautiful piece of meat with almost no fat. We were blown away with the flavor of both dishes. Of course we had to finish the meal with creme brûlée because if it's on the menu, we have to have it! It was very flavorful, but instead of using a torch to carmelize the sugar, it seems to have been put under a broiler briefly which heated the ramekin causing the edges to start to melt. Other reviews have complained about the price, but honestly it's comparable to steakhouses at home (and we're not from a big city either). The only reason it loses a star is because the steaks are cut a little on the small side - for instance the small prime rib is about 6-7 ounces, while the large portion is 10 ounces. Don't expect filet mignon. This place is the perfect example of the MISLEADING advertising that MANY steakhouse restaurants are doing to their customers. The menu shows "Petite Filet Mignon". You would expect to be served a small center cut of the beef tenderloin. WRONG. If you google search petite filet mignon, you will learn that it is NOT from the tenderloin. It is from the chuck cut. "The petite filet is part of the chuck beef area from the front of the cow in the shoulder...the filet mignon is in the beef tenderloin in the back of the cow." (sipbitego.com) You pay more and get tricked into believing you are getting the tenderloin; you are NOT getting tenderloin. My wife ordered this so-called petite filet mignon, and it was full of FAT and silver skin. She couldn't eat it. I told the waitress I wanted a CENTER CUT, and I was given a center cut from the butt section of the tenderloin. Again, another misleading effort to take my money and give me a crappy piece of meat. The butt of the tenderloin is NOT as tender as the center of the tenderloin. This sombrero-shaped steakhouse is located within the maze of South of the Border shops and attractions. I wasn't quite sure what to expect from a restaurant with a large neon "steakhouse" sign with a blinking sombrero on top, two bull statues welcoming visitors out front, and nestled in the midst of souvenir shops, arcade games, and a fireworks store. The restaurant was nearly empty since it was Sunday night and off-season. The entire South of the Border experience was definitely not what I remember from childhood. It seemed like a ghost-town with plenty of empty parking lots and no lines for the carousel or Ferris wheel. I didn't have high expectations for this restaurant but was pleasantly surprised. The salad bar options included mixed greens and spinach in addition to iceberg lettuce. Other items on the bar were beets, peas, garbanzo beans, baby corn, ham, bacon bits, cottage cheese, black and green olives, cranberries, pickled okra, chow mein, and croutons to name a few. Everything looked and tasted fresh. The grilled wild salmon entree was perfectly cooked and tasty. It came with a trip to the salad bar and choice of starch on the side. The sweet potato was delicious. I also tried my husband's rib eye steak which was delicious. His steak was cooked exactly as he ordered it. It was perfectly (lightly) seasoned which enhanced the already flavorful well-chosen cut of rib-eye steak. The restaurant is conveniently located off the expressway but the eyeful of tall, bright, neon signs and advertisements vying for your business might overshadow this little gem. I would give it 2.5 out of 5 stars for location since it feels like it's in the middle of a carnival. I would rate this 5 out of 5 stars for value since the entrees all included a trip to the plentiful salad bar and a choice of starch including baked or sweet potato, rice, or honey grain bread. Well.... It's taken me a few days to soak in what happened at The Peddler Steakhouse in the South of the Border area of South Carolina. Before I go any further I want to say that this was THE BEST Prime Rib experience I have ever had in my life. I was driving down I-95 searching for my usual brand steakhouse but couldn't find one. Suddenly I saw a billboard that said best steaks in town, Peddlers Steakhouse! Well obviously I searched the internet and noticed good reviews and thought, what the heck I'll try it out. I called ahead and was lucky enough to get the Manager "Mitch" which I soon told that I was ravenously hungry and looking for a GREAT Prime Rib. He assured me that I wouldn't be disappointed. When I get there I immediately noticed the fresh and very clean salad bar, which I think would be worth visiting by itself. After making my usual grand entrance and introducing myself as the mystery caller, Mitch told me to have a seat and buckle up. Sure enough this would turn out to be the culinary ride of my life. It started out with that epic salad bar and a lobster bisque to die for. Then came the SLAB OF BEEF which happened to be cooked to PERFECTION. Now I know I can go on and on about this and either entertain you or bore the shit out of you so I will just end this review with pictures of the masterpiece and tell you that it took me three sittings to eat the whole thing. Hidden in an unassuming part of South of the Border, this fancy steak house ticks off all of the marks. Modern interior décor, a variety of foods on the menu, great service, and well prepared meals. I had the chopped steak and a side salad, which was cooked to perfection, and the salad came exactly as I requested. The bread was kept rolling our way (We are the BREAD family after all), and drinks kept topped off. I was expecting a ponderosa or Logan's level, but the Peddler is leaps and bounds above them. So really pleasantly surprised with this first visit. And I say 1st visit because we will be back. The recent reviews on Yelp definitely had me skeptical but hey, got to try for myself. First off the salad buffet was fresh, clean and items on the bar I haven't seen in awhile. If you've been to Pizza Inn and thought their salad bar was good well you're about to get a step up. Granted it was a Thursday night, we were the 2nd table to get seated for the night, but it was fresh! Not leftovers from the night before. We did arrive around 5:11, because we tried to get in the previous Saturday but the wait was 40 minutes at 7pm. Alternative is Willy McDuffs in Lauringburg. You get bread with dinner- think Outback bread. That's what it is. Both our steaks were ordered to temperature- 150°F to 155°F. I just watched a Netflix documentary on Food Safety. I had the petite filet and my husband had the ribeye. Both came out cooked to order, tender and full of flavor. Had a smoky flavor as it's cooked on wood charcoal. We both had side of fries. If your a wine connoisseur they have some great choices as very reasonably prices. We each had a cocktail for dinner which was great too. Dessert was a pecan caramel Bundt cake! Yum! The only downfall to this place is there is no bar seating. So yes, you may be seated next to the family with noisy kids or the lady on her cell phone who talks to loud. Definitely will be back. My 10 ounce ribeye steak was approximately 7 to 8 ounces of fat & gristle. It was very oily & soggy texture. The complementary bread was stale & hard. Lobster bisque lacked lobster & tasted like salty cheese. While we were eating we noticed the cook grabbing raw meat, without gloves on & then grabbing hamburger buns, cheese & kitchen utensils without washing his hands or putting gloves on. When we voiced our dislike of the bisque the waitress was gracious enough to comp us for our kids teas. I do feel the price of our meal was extremely outrageous for what we received! The hostess was new and said she'd been there two days but she did a wonderful job, very friendly. Our waitress was Gabby. She did an awesome job very attentive. with lots going on in the restaurant. A true day of days for me. Earlier that morning in Washington DC a moving truck had picked up my worldly possessions and now I was en route to my new life in Florida. By the time I wearily rolled up on South of the Border (SOB) both my sports car and I were hungry. My car deserved premium unleaded and I deserved a steak. To the Peddler! Go ahead Pedro, fix your slop, I'll eat it. I walk in and the first thing I can confirm from previous reviews is that it's like stepping into the 1970's and I mean that in a good way. Run down and dirty 1970's is the bad way. Low lighting (which could hide some ugly bits), glitter in the burgundy paint on the ceiling and tables covered in brown paper. I have no problem with brown paper covering the tables. It was pretty full at 8pm on a Saturday night so I had to wait for a table but I didn't mind because by that time anywhere other than driving on I-95 was where I wanted to be. Did I mention that I loved the Carolina accent on the hostess? After 10 minutes or so I'm seated and given a menu. Menu was smallish but with enough variety to please everyone except my vegan crazy ex-girlfriend. Anyways, I wasn't concerned with anything on the menu but dead cow meat. I ordered the Ribeye (med rare) which came with the heavily reviewed on yelp salad bar and a side. I was feeling 'steak au poivre' so I ordered the french fries as my side. The much hyped salad bar was classic good. Iceberg lettuce, beets, sauteed mushrooms, chopped ham, chopped bacon (not bacon bits), those miniature corn things, and cauliflower just to name a few things that I noticed. I wouldn't call it a 1970's salad bar though since it did not have cottage cheese or green jello. The salad I created with a bit of ranch dressing was yummy. While I was eating my salad the server brought over bread and butter. Steak came out perfectly (med rare) with a nice bit of marbling and fries were just out of the fryer hot. I eagerly tucked in and was very happy. Simple. Perfect. Delish. What more could I want? Oh, I know... an obnoxious dessert. I asked the cute server about desserts and she rambled off the usual... cheesecake, creme burlee, fried cheesecake.... wuh? Fried cheesecake? Ok, I'm in. Obnoxious dessert is what I wanted and obnoxious dessert is what was brought to my table. It was like a deep fried cheesecake egg roll cut in half with a full scoop of vanilla ice cream on either side, some whipped cream, and drizzled with carmel. I could only eat about 1/3 of it. I left the Peddler very satisfied. I wistfully said goodbye to the giant neon lit Pedro, jumped in my car, and headed south on I-95 and into the dark unforgiving night. In the end foodies may scoff because it's not an adventurous place but screw them. All I can say is that the food was good, the service was good, and sometimes, probably most of the time, that's enough. read more
