First of all this is a very authentic experience at this very typical English Pub and Inn. I lived in one for three summers back in the day. It's easy enough to find and the parking lot is a decent size, if you're a guest for the Inn park in the spot referenced by your room number. I went in the door and was greeted by the desk host, check in was as easy as they come. She walked me up to our room pointing out the necessary. Our single key worked on our room door but not on the outside door to enter the Inn as we were told it would. Yes we found WiFi once we got down to the pub the one modern convenience we needed but only two electrical sockets in the room, one in the bathroom. No flat screen, no AC, I found a space heater and a fan in the closet...Okay. we'll manage. The bed was quite high and there is a step stool to help climb into bed. Lots of yummy sheets and a quilt. The mattress was good, not great, two sides of the bed are against the wall. (Somebody's crawling over) The bathroom was small of course, only one in the shower, soap and stuff dispensers on the wall. Our window opened to the front yard, a nice ocean breeze kept us cool. Quaint and yet a bit noisy next door until everyone settles down for bed. Dinner downstairs (a separate review) After dinner we walked a half mile to Muir beach and enjoyed the sun set, perfect. No Pub partying for us these days, we woke up early for our Muir Woods adventure today. Included is a freshly cooked English breakfast (other options too) outside was cool, damp, and foggy this morning. Welcome to summer on the california coast. What a delightful surprise! The Pelican Inn is one of those places that feels like you've been transported straight to the English countryside. We stopped in for drinks and absolutely loved the atmosphere. They have a great selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, making it a wonderful place to relax after exploring nearby Muir Beach. The inn itself is full of charm and character. There are several cozy rooms and seating areas, each with its own unique feel. I especially loved the dark, old-world ambiance and the fact that they use real candles throughout the building, creating a warm and authentic atmosphere that is hard to find these days. Although we didn't stay overnight, we learned that the property also operates as a small hotel with a handful of guest rooms, which makes it even more special. I can easily imagine spending a weekend here. One thing dog owners should know: dogs are welcome on the outdoor patio if you're ordering food. If you're just stopping by for drinks, there are also a few benches on the lawn where you can sit with your dog and enjoy a beverage while admiring the beautiful cottage-style building and surrounding grounds. We visited The Pelican Inn for lunch after a morning of hiking. Immediately, I loved the charming exterior and lush green lawn. It was the Monday of MDW and we got seated indoors after only a 5 minute wait. The interior was equally charming with its dim lighting, taper candles, timbered ceilings, and impressive array of antique decor. It really felt like we were transported to an old English pub. Our cozy table was right next to the fireplace, which was delightful on a foggy day. For drinks, my partner and I both opted for the Guinness 0.0 (non-alc), which was very nice. For food, I ordered the Beef Wellington, which is something I'd always wanted to try. My partner went with the English Dip Sandwich, which our server had recommended. The Beef Wellington exceeded my expectations! It was perfectly medium rare and I loved the flakey pastry dough with mushroom filling. Although it was pricey, I think it was worth it. However, my partner was less excited about the English Dip. The sandwich was pretty mediocre and the horseradish flavor was entirely lost. This place is adorable and I would recommend coming here! We got the Shepard's pie and fish and chips. Both were delicious! We also got the sticky toffee pudding for dessert and it was the best part of our meal. The Guinness was the perfect addition. The whole place is charming and the experience is lovely. The restaurant is very low key, the interior is very dark and rustic, but the patio with a fireplace is very nice touch. The location and the open front lot facing the mountain is very relaxing. We stumbled upon this quaint Inn on the road to Muir Beach. It was so fascinating to find an old English style restaurant and pub in the middle of the secluded roads and exclusive homes on Mount Tam. Walking into the restaurant was like walking back in time - quaint wooden interiors and creaking wooden floors amidst period decor. We got married here and that in itself was an amazing experience. That being said... We came back for our one year anniversary and stayed in the same room we stayed when we got married. There are a few things that get under my skin quickly: no front desk staff, and no one answered the phone when we called multiple times. I also know, because one of the other patrons complained to the staff about the same things, "I've called 20 times and one one picks up the phone!". This is an ongoing issue as we experienced this last year too. There's no concierge or bell service. If there is, I certainly don't know about it. We ate here at the restaurant and we did enjoy the food... the issue? No service. We had to seat ourselves, find the menus and get our own silverware (but of course as previously stated there was no host/hostess at the front desk). Sooo, we sat ourselves.. and no one came. No one came to ask if we needed anything, water, etc. So I go up to the bar. No one's there. Eventually someone showed up and I found out that they were "understaffed" and of course they talking to me aggressively as they were in a hurry. First of all, yeah, anyone with eye balls can tell you're understaffed. Second, I'm the patron; I don't need to know your operating issues or to be talked to any other way but hospitably because y'all are understaffed. Case and point the place needs to be managed better. Do better. It's not a good look when you can't get a call through, empty front desk, empty bar, no server... Its disappointing, it's lazy, and we probably won't be back because of it. read more

I'm super bummed. The space is gorgeous and it's been on my bucket list for years; unfortunately, I live in SF and it's a bit of a trek. The service is comically awful. At one point we asked if we could turn a heat lamp on and the front of house flatly said "it's on" and walked away. That's one example of how friendly everyone was. Bad day? I'll preface with this: there was private event going on outside, and we understood that it might affect service. The sign at the entry said to order at the bar and seat yourself, so we did that. This meant waiting for several minutes while the bartender didn't even acknowledge us. We waited patiently and understood they were prioritizing the event but it was a little strange to not even be told "we'll be right with you" while waiting. While we ordered, we asked what hot teas they had (the menu only states that they have a selection), and the bartender just didn't answer although they were actively waiting for the rest of our order. The dining room was pretty full, so our only seating option was at the end of a long table that was already occupied. The table next to us was loud and they kept leaving to smoke weed out front. I understand that this isn't necessarily something the restaurant can change, but it affected our experience. Although the table may be vintage, it's not comfortable. It was also sticky. We ordered bangers and mash, the ploughmans lunch, bread and butter, and a hot chocolate. The sausage was good and the frozen peas were tasty. The ploughmans lunch turned out to be a salad, which was not made clear at all in the menu. If we had known it would be a salad, we would have ordered something else. The hot chocolate was warm at best, and very obviously made with water and just enough swiss miss make it look brown, instead of the rich double chocolate that was advertised. Also, for all the high prices, we were surprised about some of the low quality details. The bread itself was acceptable sourdough but for $8, the butter was just a handful of foil wrapped butter pats and the condiments were in paper cups. This completely removed the illusion of the old English inn and made what was supposed to be a nice dinner feel cheap and thoughtless. At least give me some nice butter spread for $8 bread. Everything combined left us really disappointed. If any of it could be attributed to the private event, then it might be in the dining room's best interest to close down or limit its service, instead of being spread thin or cutting corners that aren't reflective of the reputation or the prices. read more

Walked in on a Saturday for lunch. Waited behind two parties for nearly 15 minutes before the lead party alerted the bartender to the vacant host stand. "Greeted" by a woman who seemed she would rather be elsewhere and were seated in the outdoor area. Waited about ten minutes with no service, no check in. The party of two in front of us, seated in the same area, got up to leave. We quickly followed. Nice space, but unpleasant and absent service. This place was recommended to by a friend as we were having a day trip. They don't open until 12 and there was a line outside. The staff was not that friendly when we entered. It was confusing if we sat ourselves or ordered at the bar - the entire process wasn't well executed. We just walked in and were handed menus. Finally, we were informed that we seat ourselves and a server comes to us. You do have to grab your own water. The lighting and decor is cool. The best thing we enjoyed was the Shepards Pie (not pictured) it was very cheesy and had good flavors. The oysters were decent sized for the price. The fish and chips was your typical. The Shepherd's Pie was extremely small for an unreasonable price. The bread and butter cost $8 which was pretty surprising. Overall, it was an overpriced, cranky atmosphere. $10 chips in a fake British pub with no class and bad service. Won't be back, well maybe for their wifi. I emailed Pelican Inn months ago about whether I could park at the pub prior to doing a sponsored hike for a British cancer charity to end at the pub for food... No reply. My other half contacted them on their social media... No reply. We parked there anyway, had a lovely hike down the mountain, and thought we should at least get a drink there afterwards. They do nothing vegan. The female owner/bar manager screamed abuse at the kitchen staff in Spanish while we were ordering, but barely made eye contact with us. This is my fault for not truly trusting how badly reviewed their food is, but wow they somehow managed not to fry chips properly and had the gall to charge $10 for half a plate (see photo). Also no fresh condiments. Glad I didn't try anything else. Honestly, it doesn't even look British and I'm from there. It's like some mock Tudor shell hung over a Victorian house. Its garden with views of Dias Ridge is admittedly pretty gorgeous though, and probably its main selling point. Love coming here after a hike or run along the beach with my dog. Always excellent service. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. The food is great "pub grub" and having a bite to eat and a beer on the lawn is an absolute delight. There are dog water bowls, benches, lots of space, and great vibes. A gorgeous sunny day, hiked one of the many paths near Muir Beach. Hungry & thirsty, we came to the Pelican Inn for a drink and bite to eat. Lovely Tudor building w/ inside and outside patio dining. We sat in the back atrium patio section, which gave us some shade while enjoying the outdoor views. Also saw people sitting on the front lawn, picnic style, ordering food from menu. Nice option. Weekends get pretty crowded. The earlier you get there, the better! (Opens at 11:00am) The front sign reads "order first at the bar, then be seated". Line was VERY long at the bar. After ordering, we sat down, noticed people ordering from menu at their table with server. Seemed this could have been done as well. Menu reflects typical British Pub fare. SAVORY TART - creamy endive, beech mushroom and watercress. Basically a fancy mushroom soup in a small flaky tart shell. Not what I expected, but admit my first spoonful was flavorful. Felt it was a little too small for the price. FISH & CHIPS - happy with this dish! Cod dipped in batter, deep fried to a light crisp. Served with thick cut fries. SIDE SALAD - pretty straight forward spring lettuce with diced apples, grapes, and vinaigrette dressing. The food wsn't off the charts, but solidly good. The Pelican Inn is one of those staples of the North, North Bay. that you have to visit at least once. After a fresh swim session at Muir Beach, or meandering hike along the coastal trails, a stop at The Pelican Inn is the period and exclamation point at the end or either. The usual pub fare is on the menu, Fish & Chips, burgers, and salads but the English staples kick up the menu with Shepherds Pie, Bangers & Mash, and Beef Wellington to name a few. Plenty of beers, ales and stout on tap to quench your thirst or warm your belly. A pour of Guinness is always a favorite when the fog roles in. Depending on the season, there is ample space outside to sit on the grass or one of the benches available. If you are looking for table seating head inside. The space is cozy with all the charm of a bygone era in England. While i do prefer sitting outside, the Inn itself is very beautiful, so check out the inside. The details in design decor are awesome. While I have not myself, you can also stay overnight. A unique option for those exploring the California coastline. There is a very, very small parking lot. More parking is available on the street. A decent spot for some grub if you're looking for somewhere to eat near Muir Beach. My friend and I stopped here for lunch after hiking up to Pirate's Cove and we had a decent experience. We actually ended up taking our food to the beach since the inside was closed due to COVID and the lawn area was super packed. During COVID, you wait in a socially distant line and order your food from outside at the window. The line was a bit long when we got there, but we expected this since there's no other convenient choice for food near the beach. Service at the ordering counter was great! Even with the line, the staff was very helpful. They've got a pretty nice tap list here as well. We both ordered the fish and chips since people seemed to be raving about it. This place is on the pricey side, but what beachside restaurant isn't nowadays? The restrooms definitely need some work. Not sure how the inside looks since I didn't go in the dining room, but that bathroom could probably use an upgrade or two. The lawn is actually pretty spacious and dogs are allowed, but it was just too many people for us to be around during COVID. We walked back to the beach and had our food there. Now about those fish and chips; definitely pretty average. I was surprised at how small the pieces of fish were for the price. The batter was decent, the flavor was okay, and the fish seemed somewhat flakey. It just wasn't anything worth raving about. Of course, they piled on the steak fries like no other, but they were pretty dry. By the time we made it to the beach, the ketchup had spilled in our containers. I was so upset because these fries NEEDED some damn ketchup. I was hangry so they got eaten anyways. I'd be willing to try something different off of their menu. Since there isn't any other choice of restaurant near Muir Beach, I probably would come back here at some point. But, I'd most likely just bring my own picnic instead. read more
