It's an okay store with terrible accountability when it comes to their live animals. Purchased a bunny for the family and all the products that are needed for the bunny to thrive. A week later it passed away and say there's nothing they can do. I understand that life happens but in a week and they say well guess you're out of luck. I hope people take this as a warning to ask about the return policy (they won't tell you what it is) or just take your business elsewhere. We purchased our Havanese from The Pet Store about 10 months ago. Our pup was healthy and we found their process of showing all the records and complete transparency to be refreshing. We paid a little more for a pup than I wanted to but I found the staff and process to be fantastic. When we frequent this store the managers and staff are always exceptionally kind and helpful. Went to play with the puppy's I saw one that caught my eye. A beautiful little lab puppy, I was so exited to play with her because they don't normally have bigger dogs. They told me that she liked to play aggressively and nipped (normal puppy activities). They failed to mention that she bit hard and latches on. It was going good until she decided to latch onto my hand and pull me down and then get ahold of my elbow. I was there trying to get her off of me without hurting her while the employees just stood there and watched. They only intervened when I started yelling I'm done get her the F off of me. We stopped in The Pet Store a couple weeks ago to check out the puppies and ended up leaving with a new forever furry friend! He is a healthy and happy boy and we are so grateful to have found him. This is a great pet store! My daughter and I fell in love with a Yorkie Mix (a Shmorkie to be specific). We visited with her for a little while and then my daughter, who can have slight allergies to animals, wasn't sure if how she was feeling was from the puppy or from all the animals in the store. We were really considering getting this puppy but wanted to make sure she wouldn't cause allergies. We explained this to the woman who was working with us, and she said she could reserve the puppy for an hour for us to leave and come back. Within 5-10 minutes of leaving, my daughter was fine and felt it was more from the pet store in general than the puppy. If the woman would not have been willing to put the puppy on hold, we could have missed out on bringing her home which we did. I am especially concerned by this with the recent spike in Covid cases. I am an ICU RN and trust me, this virus isn't something you want to get. I came with three disabled adults. One loves to bring his mother brochures from the places we go. He was collecting some from the front of the store. I was in the back where a man who never talks was saying "baby" as he looked at the mice babies. When a worker (manager I think) said to me "We don't mind if you bring "Them" here, but he is taking our brochures and you need to keep him with you. "Them" being people with problems, "Them" are people who understand. She could have nicely asked him to "Not" take the brochures he would have said Okay and stopped. My family and I went there on Labor Day of this year and we absolutely fell in love with their 10 wk. old Cavachon. There was a donation for the socializing time - which I never felt any pressure from the staff to pay - but we definitely wanted to see how my girls would respond to a little puppy. The facility was super clean and the staff were very friendly. They were pretty knowledgeable of the breeds - luckily i had already come in having done my homework with certain breeds and what they said lined up with my research. It was helpful to see what dogs were available on their website. i find that having a website that is up to date speaks volumes of a company and how well they will care for their customers. From January - March 2017 I had a dialog back and forth with Keila Barrett (now Keila Trace), General Manager, about where the store's puppies were sourced. It started with me trying to make an appt. to come see the facility and view the puppies' records. The appt was rescheduled several times and I ultimately visited the store on my own. When I asked to see the records of a puppy, the staff person said they had to call the manager first. They returned and told me that they could not release that information until and unless I purchased a puppy...only after the transaction occurred. I was then contacted by a customer of The Pet Store who said they were given the name of LeRoy Yoder (no other information) when they asked where there puppy came from. I researched Mr. Yoder's commercial breeding history and it was deplorable. The USDA published inspection photos that were simply devastating. I sent this information to Keila and then our correspondence stopped. The Pet Store keeps citing its perfect inspection records, but will not respond to the accusations that they source their puppies from non-reputable large-scale commercial breeding operations and puppy mills. Not only is it unethical to support those brokers, but it is deceptive to the consumer who is not able to make an informed decision on whether to accept the risk of buying a puppy mill puppy, whose pedigree is virtually non-existent and whose genetic makeup is often fraught with inbreeding that results congenital health defects. Original review: There is strong evidence to support that The Pet Store DOES buy its puppies from mass breeding operations and puppy mills. I was intrigued by this response to a Yelp review from the owner (copied below), because it is absolutely categorically false. I have been in the store and asked to see the origins of the puppies, including the USDA license numbers where the parents were kept. I was told that they do not release that information until or unless you buy the puppy, which directly inhibits a consumer from making an informed decision as to whether the puppy they are considering is from an acceptable breeding operation. I tried to work hand-in-hand with the owner, even privately messaging back and forth with her to express my concerns and discuss options for being more transparent to consumers. This was to avail and I have since been blocked from commenting on The Pet Store's Facebook page or any of its posts. I am saddened that in 2020 places like this can continue to operate. I am not a rescue fanatic that thinks all pet stores should be put out of business. I don't think rescue dogs are for everyone. But this place acquires puppies from large scale breeding operations and puppy mills. They tout themselves as having perfect inspection records, but what about the inspection records of the breeding operations that The Pet Store keeps in business by providing a constant demand for their puppies? If I am wrong, then I hereby ask the owner to publicize the breeding origins of every puppy that it advertises for sale on Facebook. Nothing more than the breeders license number. That's it. If I could give this place -5 stars, I would do it in a heartbeat. Not only has this business has multiple outbreaks of Parvo in their puppies, all of their puppies come from mills. They also treat ALL of their animals badly and don't respect them even in death. My close friend who was formerly employed at this establishment told me of some of the things that they did to animals. They store dead animals in the same freezer where food is kept. Do you also want to know what they do with animals who are on the brink of death??? They THROW THEM AWAY. Not put them down. Not get them the help they need... they throw them in the trash. One of the many pros of purchasing a puppy from The Pet Store was that a staff member does a puppy walk with you through the store to help you select the best items for your brand new puppy. Okay, so I will start by saying that one of the great loves of my life, actually, comes from The Pet Store in Chambersburg, PA. With that said, I cannot, in good conscience recommend the purchase of an animal from this business because there are so many questionable activities that go on there, and I would not feel comfortable sending a friend, or family member, to The Pet Store to purchase an pet. On December 23, 2017, I walked into this establishment because a friend said that they allowed you to play with the animals, and my eleven year old Daughter enjoys spending time with furbabies of all shapes and sizes. We looked at a couple of pooches and settled on a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel mix who we were told came with a clean bill of health...other than a luxating patella. To be honest, I thought the fact that they openly offered this information was a good sign. After a bit, we noticed the tiniest, little chihuahua who was in a cage with four other puppies who were quite a but larger than her, and they were all piled on top of her. Although it was concerning to see that girl under the pile of pooches, she seemed to enjoy it because she appeared to be cold which is not unusual for a chi, either. We asked to see her, and the employee shared the puppy's information with us, but failed to mention the fact that, although her parents were both chihuahuas, she was not able to be registered with the AKC or any other organization. For me, this is not a make or break thing, but it would have been GREAT to know, since they were asking a whopping $1900.00. If you could meet the little lady who is, now, my Rosita, you would understand why we fell so hard and so fast, but we chose to take the time to pick up our Son at school and hour away, so we could really think about whether or not we should make her our very own. A few short hours later, we were back and ready...to take out a loan for the smallest dog I have ever seen, and she was worth every penny...after we got her up to snuff, so to speak. We didn't notice it, but she was missing hair along her spine, in front of her gloriously huge ears, and over other portions of her tiny body. I saw it, but didn't realize there was a reason for it that was as easy as providing the appropriate nutrition to her. My vet took one look and told us how glad she was that we saved her from wherever we purchased her. At that point, we, also, realized that the free bag of food they gave us at the time of purchase was, actually, dog food instead of the puppy food she should have been given during her time at The Pet Shop. Once we switched our baby to the right kind of food and smothered her in the love she deserves, her hair grew in, and she became the spunky diva she is today. The whole thing really upset me, but I figured that we saved our special little one from an uncertain fate and, therefore, no amount of money was too much to give her the life she deserves. I felt this way until my children and I stopped in to see what The Pet Shop had to offer on Saturday, September 23, 2017. While I did notice that they cut down on the enormous number of male and female hamsters they had living, and breeding, in one large cage, I noticed other things things that we equally, if not more, disturbing than when we bought our Rosa. When I say, they had male and females together, I mean these poor things were walking all over each other, and females were giving birth in the middle of the chaos, and the workers were unable to even decipher which ones were giving birth, but for anyone who knows anything about hamsters, the young are supposed to be separated from the daddies because...they would, otherwise, be eaten most of the time. So, this was better for the hamsters, but then my Daughter noticed two of the tiniest ferret babies that I have ever seen, and we were told that they were only 8 weeks old. As we stood there oohing and aahing over the little cuties, one decided to go to the bathroom in the corner across from the litter box. At that point, and to my utter shock, the Pet Store employee grabbed the poor, little thing, flopped it into the litter box, and gave it about 15 seconds to finish its bathroom break. Then, as we stood there with our mouths hanging open, she picked the baby up again, shoved it into the now soiled corner, shoved its nose in the poop, and...smacked the ferrets butt!!! I was, completely, dumbfounded, but my Daughter, who is 12 years old and lacking a filter when it comes to animals, blurted out, "Uuuuhhh, why did you just hit that ferret?" The employees response was that it "is the only way to teach them to go to the bathroom in the litter box." While I was still stunned, I did notice the fact that, apparently, the two babies were more fond of using the bathroom in the corner opposite the litter box, so a more humane way of teaching it where to go would, obviously, have been to move the litter box to the preferred corner rather than abusing it. read more

About 14 years ago, I bought a Saint Bernard puppy here. It is true that the animals are in "cages" ( more like boxes with grates on the bottom and plexiglass fronts ) that do make you feel sorry for the poor little things. My Saint Bernard, however, lived beyond his average life span to be 12.5 years old. He had an amazing temperament and never had health problems. After his passing, we bought a labradoodle from the store. He was also in perfect health and, though hyper as all of this breed are, he also has a kind and loving temperament. I know that buying from a pet store rather than a breeder is a controversial decision, but it is only fair to share my positive experiences with their animals. read more

I've been to this shop when I was in college and I can see that it's still awful. I cannot in good faith recommend these people for your new animal companion or your pet's needs. Instead, call the SPCA to report these people. Their knowledge on rabbits alone is nothing short of cringeworthy, and when you call them up on it or try to educate or leave a review on social media they block you and delete all negative comments. Is that someone you want to trust or do business with? They sell rabbits around Easter, something no responsible shop or rescue would ever due considering they're the most disposed of pets around that time due to irresponsible sales, and recommend poor knowledge on how to take care of that animal and take advantage of you being a new pet owner by listing products on their "free fact sheets" so they get the most out of the sale without taking the health of the animal into consideration. They keep their animals such as dogs, cats, and rabbits in extremely small enclosures, and purchase these animals from irresponsible breeders and mills. (just research them they're easy to find). Though a family business, their knowledge on animals and how to keep them is simply wrong, they aren't willing to educate themselves to make it right for the best of their animals, their morals are wrong as they try to sell you junk food to your new pet, and they try to hide any bit of evidence of wrongdoing on their part. I encourage all future buyers to shop elsewhere and get their animals and information on how to take care of them from the local animal shelters and rescues instead. read more

Their dogs are kept in tiny cages with multiple breeds together. Herps were in questionable housing. I understand they need to be kept for resale so the ideal habitat is not feasable in a store setting but some of the lizards didnt even have hides and most if not all of the snakes were under the grass carpets. The fish were okay as far as I could tell but I would not buy my fish here given the state and questionable nature of the puppies and kittens as well as the herp housing. 1 week ago i got my bird from there the next day i called and talked to kalya the gm? About my bird and missing feathers something wasnt right.. well finally after begging my vet to see my bird.. here he has a infection from the other birds plucking his feathers.. 100$ for meds and vet visit. So im guessing these animals only see a vet once and thats it. I got a call from kalya today and i told her what happen all she could say was good and if it could have spread to the other birds.. like really.. i just spent over 500$ for a bird and then a 100$ vet visit that wasnt my fault.. and all i get was could it have spread to the other birds.. i was nice to her on the phone and just said thanks have a great day. No point in arguing. Atleast this poor guy will be in great hands.. just fill bad for the other animals.. i wouldnt dare do back to that place. And the crazy part is this lady is ignoring me! I went here and bought 4 fish. One died within 12 hours two other within 24 hour and the other within 4 days! They never gave a warranty. Needless to say I will NEVER buy another thing from here!
