Not the first time we've been there (we've been many times and always love it). We went for breakfast this morning. I had the Popeye omelette (spinach, bacon, tomatoes, American cheese) with wheat toast and their breakfast potatoes (which are little cubes that could be the cousins of French fries. I mean that in a GOOD way because while I usually just pick at home fries, I ate every single one of these that were in a smaller/rational sized portion (unlike the crazy huge plate filler portions we usually get). Hubby had some sort of Benedict (that I didn't even get to ask him about because he INHALED it- it was THAT good). We had our usual accompanying beverages (me: coffee and ice water... him: coffee and a mimosa). I've never had a bad meal here but the last time I've been was pre-COVID. This morning we went around 9am and were seated right away. They had a booster seat or high chair available for my daughter but it looked like they might only have one of each. They have crayons for the kiddos but I don't see a kid's menu which was fine. We probably would have ordered off the adult menu anyway. Food came out fast, as always. I got the strawberry Nutella French toast which was delicious. Though, I could have done without the strawberries but it worked out because my daughter loved eating them. I normally would order a side of bacon with this but I knew my daughter wouldn't eat all of hers so I was able to skip that. My daughter got the one egg (scrambled), choice of meat (bacon- 4 pieces) , toast (white & buttered), and home fries. My husband got the eggs with corned beef hash. Everything was good & hot. It's simple food done well (consistently). The restaurant is small and seating is first come, first serve but there is a counter where you can grab seats, if you don't need a table. Everything takes longer with a toddler but normally we'd be in & out pretty quick. There's a good amount of regulars which adds to a warm atmosphere of everyone knowing everyone else. First time trying out this place. Cute, country atmosphere. Friendly staff. We had a short wait, but they were moving food out and cleaning tables as quickly as they could. The menu had a good variety of breakfast favorites and a few seasonal specials. Big portions. Fair prices. I ordered the Popeye omelette (spinach, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, and cheese). YUM! Honestly, one of the best omelettes that I have ever had. I ordered a few things to "sample" the menu. The corned beef hash had nice chunks of corned beef, but it was a bit too salty for me. The pancakes were HUGE and fluffy with just enough sweetness that syrup was not necessary. My husband got the blueberry and it was loaded. I got the strawberries and cream, and it was perfect, with tons of strawberries. I will definitely go back. While visiting family we enjoyed Fathers Day breakfast here on their 3rd day open since the Covid-19 closure. These folks pored their hearts and souls into providing comfortable, distanced dining. The services was slightly slow, but once we had our iced coffee we were content to chat and enjoy the company. Our food was delicious. I had the Popeye omelet with pumpernickel toast and sliced tomato which I subbed for the potatoes. The others In my party were also satisfied with their breakfasts. My family is at the picket fence nearly every weekend. It's one of those places where the staff sees you walking in and immediately gets your drink order together without you having to ask. The food is basic but good, the staff is attentive, and we love supporting a small, woman-owned business. The last two years have been really hard for our little picket fence, but Diana and the team stuck it out, and did their best to keep everyone safe and well fed, and we are so grateful. More often than not I get the bacon, egg, and cheese on an English muffin, but I also love the hash, eggs Benedict, and French toast. Specials change weekly but are great too! read more

Please get her a Bus / Utility Bin to clear the tables. The girl was working as hard as she could to clean-up tables, wipe them down, and then balance a pile of dirty dishes on her way back to the kitchen. Buy her a tote and let her put all of the dishes in the tote, wipe the table down (all in one trip) and turn the table over quicker; more flow-through / Less People Standing in the doorway, etc. Everyone needs the right tools to be successful - get her a Bus Tote. The $23 (for a 4-pack) will pay for itself via turning-over tables in a more timely manner. read more

Our visit here last week lived up to our expectations. Their reputation was well known to us from earlier reviews and from family and friends. Our server was friendly and did check on us a few times, but seemed to disappear for long stretches. Mrs B had bacon and eggs while I enjoyed the Hunga Mian Special. There was plenty of food on the plates, needed a second plate for the pancakes. My only complaint would be the eggs. What was supposed to be scrambled eggs were way too loose. They were more like sunny side up. Good tasting but not what I wanted. Since I didn't see my server, I ate what was given to me so I could enjoy the entire meal while it was still hot. We picked a random place to go for breakfast and we landed on this place. For a small spot it was packed however they have speedy and quality cooks in the back. I believe our waitress was the owner. She was very upbeat, funny, and seemed to be a peer to the other waitresses. The place had a very vintage feel with a up beat atmosphere. Zero stars if I could. I ordered a Belgium waffle with powdered sugar. When I got home and opened the container no surprise they DIDN'T put the powered sugar on it and it looked burned and was very small and thin. It even says on the menu it comes with powdered sugar. Didn't matter anyway as the whole thing was inedible. I wasn't even able to cut through it with a fork and I can't imagine trying to chew it. I don't know what the heck was wrong with it. I didn't want to risk eating it and getting sick. When you can't even put a fork through a waffle because it is hard as a rock and not able to cut completely through something wasn't right. I live in Douglas and definitely won't be going back to this place. Save your money. My order came to over $15.00 for 2 mini size burnt waffles. Also, I am not one to write a bad review ever but I was at a loss and completely angry that I wasted over $15.00 on a waffle I couldn't even cut through and eat. I was also overcharged which just added to the frustration. The waffles were $6.95 each and I was charged $15.52. Even with tax added I was still overcharged. read more

Although I still have the same feelings about this restaurant as expressed in my last post, the owner had contacted me to clarify that the fee was not for an "extra plate", but it was for two adults who opted to share their meal (i.e. the Hungry Man Special). As I had expressed to her, I do not understand why restaurants charge a fee for plate-sharing when one is paying for the food in the first place! Does it mean one will have to pay a fee to take their food home because they might end up sharing it with someone else? Obviously, each restaurant can implement whatever rules they want, but as a consumer,I know of many restaurants where I can get as much food as their Hungry Man Special without having to pay an additional fee for sharing. As part of this post, I will apologize publicly for the misunderstanding regarding that "extra plate" fee, but as far as my opinion goes, I still feel the same at present and unless things change in the distant future, whether or not I go back is still up in the air. read more

The Douglas area has many breakfast options and I can confidently say that after trying most of the, The Picket Fence Restaurant is easily the best. Many places have a large flaw: poor service, long wait times, bad atmosphere--but the Picket Fence does everything right. Due to the delicious food, amazing service, and personable staff, the Picket Fence has been my choice every week for the past three years. What immediately sets the Picket Fence above other local restaurants is the atmosphere. The building itself is small, cozy, bright and airy. While it is usually bustling, something about the space makes the activity feel more lively than chaotic. Every member of the wait staff is always at their best and even when there is a line out the door, everything is running smoothly and efficiently. What has been a factor of dissuasion from returning to other restaurants in the area is how sluggish the pace of the kitchen and wait staff are--many local restaurants are slow to clean tables, slow to take an order, and slow to process those orders, but not the Picket Fence. I do not think I've ever had to wait more than 5 minutes for a my food to come out--sometimes, when it is less busy, the food comes out instantly. Adding to the atmosphere is the staff. I have never seen a staff so consistently positive, energetic and cheerful. Their enthusiasm is infectious and really is a great way to brighten the morning. It may seem like many of the customers are frequent locals--but it's more a testament to the fact that the staff are committed to knowing who you are and being as welcoming as possible. It only took two visits before everyone knew my name. The menu has all of the breakfast favorites and while it doesn't stray too far from the traditional line up, the quality is good and consistent. Having dined as often as I have, I have never had a time where the food was below my expectations. I recommend attending on Saturday or Sunday where there is the specials menu--this is where you see more creative dishes that differ from the norm. Lastly, if any of my reasons for attending aren't persuasive enough, then meeting Diane hopefully will change that. Diane runs the show and is the most prominent individual at the front of the house. It is rare that you will meet someone who is so genuinely passionate and enthusiastic about her job, meeting new people, and running her restaurant at the highest quality possible. Beyond being a fantastic owner, Diane is extremely generous and helpful and will gladly lend her hand to anything within her ability. If there is any reason you try the Picket Fence for breakfast--it should be for the opportunity to meet Diane. There was a previous statement about a charge for extra plates and, as someone who knows the restaurant well, would like to clarify that such a claim is false. There is one item on the menu--The Hungry Man Special--that has a $1.50 charge if you and another person order it together and share. The item itself is cheaply priced and the extra $1.50 is worth it. In terms of sharing any other meal--go for it, there is no charge to use extra plates. If you want an extra plate to hold you toast--go for it. If you want an extra plate to hold your car keys, you got it. Claims like this make the establishment seem avaricious, which couldn't be farther from the truth. I strongly encourage anyone to visit the Picket Fence two or three times. The more you go, the more you'll feel part of the family and the more you'll be compelled to return. read more

The Picket Fence has a charming and cozy feel to it. I ordered a breakfast special, which consisted of a one classic eggs benedict and another that was filled with corned beef hash and melted cheese. The hollandaise sauce needs a little improvement and the cheese sauce reminded me of the nacho cheese you order at a movie theater. I can't complain, however, because they were both equally delicious! The side of homefries was also tasty. I also managed to steal a bite of a chocolate chip pancake from my fiancé's plate. And it was GOOD. Their portions are on the bigger side, which is an awesome deal for what the plates are worth. I would definitely come back here if I am ever in town. read more
